“We are thrilled to close out the 2017 SXSW Film Festival with such a special film as Life,” said Janet Pierson, SXSW Director of Film. “Our audiences will love this taut space thriller’s twists and turns as well as its amazing cast.”

This has easily been the hardest time I’ve ever had whittling down my favorite genre offerings for the year. I was fortunate to watch so many great movies throughout the course of the last 12 months (over 150—new and old!), and considering the quality of projects from both the studio and independent sides of the business was exceedingly high, I probably could have featured 20 films on this list, and still would have at least a dozen more I could recommend to fellow fans. 2016 was definitely one of the best recent years in horror and that’s pretty rad.
Beyond the realm of movies, horror also had a strong showing on TV, as it seems almost every single network these days has something of interest if you’re looking to immerse yourself in horror on the small screen. I was also fortunate enough to attend several amazing genre events in 2016, making...

We're back with our annual list of favorites here on Daily Dead. For those that are new to Daily Dead, we handle our year-end lists differently here. Rather than just covering films, our lists can extend to TV, games, collectibles, events, and anything else genre-related. In short, we’re sharing with you a list of our favorite horror experiences from 2016.
Check back every day this week to find out what made the cut for the rest of the Daily Dead team.
Train to Busan: I predict that we’ll look back at 2016 as the year when zombie-mania started its decline from the insane levels we saw when The Walking Dead regularly smashed its own ratings records and World War Z was a surprise box office success. With that said, don’t let zombie fatigue keep you from boarding the Train to Busan.

The last 24 hours have seen the release of three trailers for upcoming movies, including a brand new (and unexpected) thriller from Jordan Peele, and two powerful looking dramas. Come inside to check them out!
Sometimes, movie news likes to land all at once, with multiple things hitting at the same time. Such was the case with these three trailers, so instead of spreading them out over a few articles, I thought it'd be easier to lump them all together...Especially considering these are the first trailers for all three films. Let's start out with something unexpected:
Get Out comes as a big surprise being written and direted by Jordan Peele (Key & Peele). No one knew he was making this movie, let alone a thriller that seems at odds with his normal wheelhouse. Either way, it looks kinda neat, even if the trailer gives away most of it.

Over the weekend, Fede Alvarez’s “Don’t Breathe” topped the box office, grossing an estimated $26.1 million and becoming the latest in a string of financial success stories for horror fare this summer. It’s now on track to dominate Labor Day weekend as well. More importantly, it’s a damn scary film—and just the most recent one in a year that has seen a remarkable run of quality in the genre. Summer is just ending, and 2016 has already shaped up as the strongest year for cinematic fear in quite some time, in a number of ways.
Sequels and remakes largely took a powder.
Since the 2000’s began, it has often seemed like producers and studios weren’t interested in horror properties unless they had a number in the title or a big-screen antecedent, whether it was foreign or domestic. Even as both the “Conjuring” and “Purge” franchises were profitably extended earlier this season,...

Synopsis: A woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) discovers the horrifying truth about the outside world while living in an underground shelter with two men (John Goodman, John Gallagher Jr.)
What a great start to the year with Jj Abrams dropping a trailer for a long awaited “sequel” to Cloverfield on Twitter January 15, 2016. People’s minds ran wild with what could be in store. Abrams has slowly built a resume that might make him comparable to Steven Spielberg of this generation. If any director in the 21st century has earned the right to walk the masses into a movie theater blindfolded, it is Jj Abrams. But, if you are not a fan of most of his catalogue, he probably lured you into coming with two words: John Goodman. Let’s begin!
This is a wonderful scene
The opening credits scene yanks the viewer until a thrilling atmosphere. Sound is the scariest part of the film.

Most people thank (or blame) Ridley Scott's 1984 Macintosh ad for inventing the spectacle of the Super Bowl commercial, but the Independence Day spot that 20th Century Fox unleashed during the big game in 1996 was an equally significant milestone. Ever since 100 million Americans gawked at their televisions in awe as a massive alien spaceship blew up the White House, the football championship has become the ultimate launching pad for the next wave of spring and summer blockbusters. These days, it almost feels like there’s an entire Comic-Con worth of...

It's billed as a sequel to Cloverfield, but is 10 Cloverfield Lane all it seems? We take a look at the subject of unrelated sequels...
In an era where it's just about impossible to make a high-profile movie without at least something leaking onto the web, producer Jj Abrams seems to have pulled off the ultimate coup in recent months: he and his company Bad Robot have secretly created a follow-up, of sorts, to the 2008 hit monster movie, Cloverfield.
On the 15th January, a trailer landed for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a claustrophobic horror thriller that Abrams described in a statement to Collider as a "blood relative" of that earlier film directed by Matt Reeves.
The premise is this: Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character, Michelle, is injured in a car accident and wakes up in a bunker with 40-something survivalist, Howard (John Goodman).
Howard tells Michelle that some kind of...

Watch the first trailer for the upcoming animated movie, Ratchet & Clank.
The CG-animated movie is based on the iconic PlayStation video game. The voice cast includes Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, Bella Thorne, Rosario Dawson, Jim Ward, James Arnold Taylor, David Kaye, Armin Shimerman, and Sylvester Stallone.
(Apple iTunes)
Two unlikely heroes struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind, a foolhardy “lombax” who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn.
When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way, they will learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity.

The present-day Bruce Willis trying his hand at blending comedy with other genres hasn’t really been working out as well as we might hope, but he’s keeping at it. And with an already impressive cast aboard, his new, untitled project has added Adam Goldberg, Ken Davitian, Victor Ortiz, Tyga and David Arquette. Mark and Robb Cullen, whose last attempt to blend Willis and wackiness was Cop Out (red flag? We’re going to call it more sort of maroon) are also directing this one, which had been filming under the title Going Under, but is now, according to Variety, without a name. Willis is playing an La gumshoe whose prized pet pooch Buddy is pet-napped by a notorious gang. He’ll have to do the gang’s bidding while they have the animal hostage, his life complicated further by two vengeful Samoan brothers and a loan shark’s henchmen.

Johnny Goodman, the U.K. producer behind a string of classic 1960s spy shows and a former BAFTA chairman, has died. He was 87. Former James Bond actor Roger Moore, whom Goodman formed a close friendship with after working with him on the TV spy series The Saint, confirmed his passing on January 30, saying in a tweet that his "dear friend and colleague Johnny Goodman left us for the great cutting room in the sky." Goodman began his career in the entertainment industry as a teenager, working in the mail room of London's Lime Grove Studios, which would

Of the five Oscar-nominated original songs for the 87th Academy Awards, Selma’s “Glory” and Beyond the Light’s “Grateful” are the only songs that solely play over the end credits of their respective film. The other three songs — “Everything is Awesome” from The Lego Movie, “Lost Stars” from Begin Again and “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” from Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me — are all performed at some point during the film.
Now, that’s not to say that the end-credits songs aren’t relevant to the plot. Both “Grateful” and “Glory” stick with the themes of their respective films and summarize relevant events, even if they aren’t integral to each plot’s progression.

Another week, another wave of TV and movie news to dissect and discuss! This week we actually have more going on in the world of the small screen than in the silver screen as Tinsletown’s biggest networks are busy announcing their May upfronts; that is what new shows they’ll be picking up, renewing, and cancelling for the 2014-2015 season. ABC, NBC, Fox, The CW, and CBS have all chimed in, and we have a few exciting choices to talk about here.
We also have word about that Halo series that Steven Spielberg is producing, and updates on the future of Star Trek 3 now that Jj Abrams has taken a trip to the galaxy far, far away; and news about a Spring Breakers sequel that’s as surprising as the first film itself. Additionaly, we got word that Universal is having trouble bringing the Mummy franchise back...

Ah, our favorite magazine tradition. Vanity Fair's 20th Annual Hollywood Issue is upon us and the dozen stars selected they've selected are very carefully placed (they've read their own reviews). Instead of an all white lineup with a person of color shoved onto the back fold, this is an extremely careful, as if everything has been weighed on a scale: 12 actors, exactly equally split between both men and women, and skin color.
Of course both of those 50/50 visual situations are grossly unreflective of the actual business of Hollywood movies but we're not here to complain but to praise, it's fun to see the cover shaken up ever so slightly. If we were here to complain we'd probably say something about the lack of Asian actors (they never get their due here in America) but no one has ever asked The Film Experience to guest art-direct a cover.

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week:
"Monster's University"
What's It About? This prequel to the Disney-Pixar favorite "Monster's Inc." takes us back in time to when Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sully (John Goodman) weren't the best of friends. Before the two became big Scarers, they were freshman at Monster's University and quickly became competitive rivals.
Why We're In: Crystal's Mike and Goodman's Sully are undoubtedly one of the funniest and most beloved onscreen animated duos. Unlike most prequels, "Monster's University" is packed with fresh humor, fun and charming moments, and will keep the whole family entertained. The prequel was also ranked one of Moviefone's Best Movies of 2013 (So Far).
