One of the most versatile and brilliant writers in history, Edgar Allan Poe was an American author who helped to influence scores of other literary greats.
Active during the 1840s and 1850s, Poe dabbled in mystery and detective writing, he helped to continue the emergence of the science-fiction genre of literature, and was part of the American Romantic Movement – even becoming the first well-known Us-born author to attempt to earn a living through his literary works alone.
Best known for his poems “The Raven”, “The Bells” and “Eldorado”, Poe also wrote several short stories, including “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, “The Gold-Bug” and “The Black Cat”.
Interestingly though, Poe also tried his hand at other forms of literature – writing one play (“Politian”) and one completed novel (“The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket”) during his lifetime.
But aside from his brilliant works, Poe’s life itself also makes for fascinating reading.

Imposing stage and screen actor whose work ranged from Shakespeare to The Bill
The character actor Bernard Horsfall, who has died aged 82, appeared in television, films and on the stage for more than half a century. Tall, imposing and authoritative, he appeared in many of the major television series from Z Cars and Dr Finlay's Casebook to Casualty and The Bill, and in Doctor Who took no fewer than four roles.
In 1968 he played Lemuel Gulliver in The Mind Robber, where he was encountered by Patrick Troughton, the second Doctor, in the Land of Fiction. The following year he returned as a Time Lord in The War Games. In 1973, with Jon Pertwee now donning the time-traveller's cape, he played the Thai chieftain, Taron, in the six-part Planet of the Daleks. And finally, he was another Time Lord, Chancellor Goth, in the 1976 story The Deadly Assassin, famously battling with Tom Baker...

Fans of Empire's poster analysis features will be well aware of the 'floating head' trope, but the latest two posters for Ang Lee's Life Of Pi go one better with not a human floating head... but a tiger's.As anyone who's read Yann Martel's much-loved fantasy adventure will tell you, the name of said tiger is Richard Parker (so-called after a character in Edgar Allan Poe's 1838 nautical novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket) and he can talk. Rather eloquently, in fact.Following on from the trailer released back at the end of July, the posters feel like a still shot from Lee's imagination let loose, all perfect sunsets and piercing eyes. What's more, as well as a floating head, you also get a floating boat - which makes more sense, considering the film sees the lead, Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel (newcomer Suraj Sharma), forced to...

Notebook is unfurling a series of tributes to Raúl Ruiz entitled "Blind Man's Bluff": the bulk a compilation of new, shorter pieces from a few generous critics and Ruizians on favorite moments from a vast, subterranean filmography. Beside these original tributes, the filmmaker and critic Luc Moullet has graciously offered his piece, written for a 2003 retrospective, on Ruiz’s 1987 short, Brise-Glace; the piece is included below for the first time in English translation, as well as in the original French below. For more from "Raúl Ruiz: Blind Man's Bluff," please check the Table of Contents.
It’s a sort of half-hour long sketch, inserted into an unusual omnibus co-produced by the French ministry of Foreign Affairs and Sweden, and centered on a Scandinavian ship called the “brise-glace,” “The Icebreaker.” The other two parts, both commonplace, are closer to documentary.

From the biting opening line of Pym, Incognegro writer Mat Johnson promises and delivers a novel both hilarious and academic, a satire in the best possible sense. The novel opens with the main character, English professor Chris Jaynes having just been denied tenure at a “historically white” liberal-arts college in New York. He believes it’s because he, the campus’ token black professor, refused to serve on the diversity committee and preferred to give classes on Edgar Allen Poe rather than African-American literature. The focus of Jaynes’ research is The Narrative Of Arthur Gordon Pym Of Nantucket, Poe’s only ...

It has recently been revealed by producer Don Murphy that Tom Cruise has been tapped for the lead in Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness, set to start filming this June. The film has been long awaited by horror fans and fans of the writer, is being co-produced by James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar), and is going to be released in 3D. As a rabid fan of Lovecraft’s work, I have to wonder if this is the right choice.
It’s not that I hate Cruise, but I’ve never been a big fan of the man. In fact, there’s little before 1994’s Interview with the Vampire that I actually consider worth watching (I will admit, one of these days, I do plan on giving Legend a second chance). There have been few performances of his that have just “wowed” me...

Oksana Grigorieva's doctor feared the singer had suffered a concussion after her alleged bust-up with ex-boyfriend Mel Gibson - and urged her to go for a brain scan. The former couple is currently fighting it out in the courts for custody of their daughter Lucia after splitting earlier this year.
The Russian beauty has since accused the actor of attacking her during an argument in January, alleging she suffered severe bruising and had two of her teeth knocked out during the fight. And in a declaration submitted to the courts, her physician, Dr. Arthur Gordon, claims he was concerned about abnormalities in Grigorieva's right eye after she came to him claiming she felt nauseous and dizzy following the alleged altercation.
In the papers, Dr. Gordon states, "She was hit in the head the day before and that since that time she had been suffering from nausea, headaches and dizziness, as well as 'aches all over'.

According to TMZ.com, the declaration says Dr. Gordon recommended she went to hospital to have a scan to ensure she didn't have internal bleeding. However, she decided against going to the emergency room.
Grigorieva is set to reveal all about her alleged abuse at the hands of Gibson in a special interview with U.S. newsman Larry King set to air in America on Wednesday.
