Jeremy Piven has said that he is already "really proud" of the second series of Mr Selfridge.
Piven - who stars as the titular department store founder Harry Gordon Selfridge in the period drama - was speaking to Digital Spy and other journalists at the Novak Djokovic Foundation gala dinner in central London on Monday night (July 8).
"I'm not supposed to tell you, but I'll tell you anyway that [series two] starts five years ahead, so the backdrop is the Great War," Piven began.
"I know it's such a cliche, but this season, everything in the show is deepened. I'm really proud of the way it's going and I feel like we have a duty to do better than last season, and I think we're off to a really great start."

The latest PBS offering on "Masterpiece Classic" is "Mr. Selfridge," a period drama set in turn-of-the-century England. Sound familiar?
"Mr. Selfridge" tells the story of real-life department store mogul Harry Gordon Selfridge (Jeremy Piven), who revolutionized the world of shopping when he opened Selfridge & Co. in London in 1909. Will "Downton Abbey" fans get their period drama fix with this new program? Yes and no.
On the one hand, "Mr. Selfridge" has many of the trappings viewers love about "Downton" -- period costumes and sets, an upstairs/downstairs feel between the wealthy Selfridge, his friends and customers, and the working-class people who are employed at his store.
Related: "Downton Abbey" cast in regular clothes
However, whereas "Downton" has always focused on propriety and upholding the old ways in an ever-changing world, "Mr. Selfridge" is about looking forward, an entrepreneur working his way up the social ladder with his salesmanship and vision.

Mr Selfridge has been given a second series by ITV following its ratings success.
Featuring Entourage star Jeremy Piven, Zoe Tapper and Katherine Kelly, the show tells the story of Harry Gordon Selfridge, the founder of Selfridges department store.
The second series, which will once again be written by Andrew Davies and his team, will move the story forward to 1914 and the lead-up to World War 1.
Series one of Mr Selfridge is currently midway through its run and has been edging out BBC One's rival period drama Ripper Street in the ratings. However, it hasn't quite matched the figures of BBC One's Call The Midwife.
It is ITV's most-watched new drama since Scott and Bailey launched in 2011.

Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage. Today’s TCA panel on PBS’ new Masterpiece Classic series Mr. Selfridge — a period drama starring Jeremy Piven as real-life department store entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge — was haunted by the ghost of Downton Abbey. On March 31, the new drama will join the megahit Downton on Sunday nights, so it is not surprising that Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton announced at the top of the session that the premiere of Mr. Selfridge on Britain’s ITV a couple of weeks ago rated higher that the premiere of “that other show.” Related: ‘Mr Selfridge’ Debuts To Strong Ratings On UK’s ITV Creator Andrew Davies said on the panel that no decision has been made on a second season but “I’ve already written the first [episodes] of Season 2. We should hear very soon. We’ve done such good numbers in the UK; I’m very confident.

It's a long way from "Entourage" to the mannered world of English shopping in the early 20th century. But if anyone can do it, Jeremy Piven is probably the man. The actor stars in the upcoming ITV production, "Mr. Selfridge," the next potential "Masterpiece" hit for PBS in the United States. With a trailer released by ITV, you can begin to judge the period piece for yourself.

After the enormous hullabaloo over Downton Abbey and the ridiculous ratings it nabbed, UK network ITV is eagerly taking another stab at the costume drama game with a semi-historical series called Mr. Selfridge, chronicling the sexy, sexy life of American department store founder Harry Gordon Selfridge. The series, created by Bridget Jones’ Diary screenwriter Andrew Davies, is based on the book Shopping, Seduction, And Mr. Selfridge, and it all sounds a bit like Mad Men meets True Life: I’m Working Retail In The 1900s. Jeremy Piven is in talks to star in ITV's ten-part biographical miniseries Mr. Selfridge, Deadline reports. The show is based on the book Shopping, Seduction and Mr. Selfridge and follows the exploits Harry Gordon Selfridge, the department store magnate who helped build the Marshall Field empire in the U.S. and founded Selfridge's in the U.K in the early 1900s. He was also a total scamp and thought of shopping as a "sensual" experience, according to the book. Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Bridget Jones) is writing the adaptation, and between that, the period setting, and ITV, there's definitely a Downton Abbey vibe afoot. Except for the part where Jeremy Piven would star.

Exclusive: Jeremy Piven is in negotiations to star in the 10-episode ITV drama series Mr. Selfridge. Announced just last week by the British commercial broadcaster, Mr. Selfridge will trace the life of the flamboyant and visionary American entrepreneur, Harry Gordon Selfridge (Piven), and chronicle the launch of his famous London department store Selfridge’s. Based on the book Shopping, Seduction And Mr Selfridge by Lindy Woodhead, the series, created by Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’ Diary), is looking to capitalize on the success of another ITV period drama, Downton Abbey. Mr. Selfridge is set in London in 1909 at a time when wealthy women were enjoying a new sense of freedom, and “Mile a Minute Harry” wanted to indulge, empower and celebrate these women, making shopping as thrilling as sex. ITV had been looking for a high-profile American actor to play the lead in the series, which starts production in April in London for a 2013 premiere.

The UK’s ITV has announced a new 10-part drama series in a move that looks to build on the mega-success of its Downton Abbey. Mr. Selfridge will trace the life of the flamboyant and visionary American entrepreneur, Harry Gordon Selfridge, who created the famed London department store Selfridge’s. Contrary to Downton, which is made by NBCUniversal’s Carnival Films, Mr. Selfridge will be an in-house ITV Studios production. Created by writer Andrew Davies (Brideshead Revisted, Bridget Jones’ Diary), Mr. Selfridge is set in London in 1909 at a time when wealthy women were enjoying a new sense of freedom. ‘Mile a Minute Harry’ wanted to indulge, empower and celebrate these women; making shopping as thrilling as sex, according to ITV. Based on the book Shopping, Seduction And Mr Selfridge by Lindy Woodhead, the series will shine a light on hidden moments of the history of women through fashion, cosmetics,...

Andrew Davies, who wrote the script for The Three Musketeers and a slew of BBC period dramas, is adapting Lindy Woodhead’s nonfiction bestseller Shopping, Seduction & Mr Selfridge for ITV Studios. I’m told that ITV hopes the story of how brash American retailer Harry Gordon Selfridge --"The Showman of Shopping" -- opened the world’s first purpose-built department store in London in 1909 will repeat the success of Downton Abbey. That NBC Universal production has been a huge hit over here for ITV. Certainly there’s a plum role for the American actor playing Selfridge, who blew his fortune on mistresses and gambling before dying destitute. Selfridge’s girlfriends included famed dancer Isadora Duncan and Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. His massive overspending ultimately cost him control of Selfridges. The second series of Downton Abbey, meanwhile, started shooting on location at Highclere stately home in Berkshire in March. Filming continues until July.
