After a two-month hiatus, Taylor Swift is back on the road with the European leg of the Eras Tour. This time, there are songs from the new album, The Tortured Poets Department, and some splashy new outfits (see below.) There will be 18 cities on the list of tour stops, and already reports are circulating of a heavy U.S. fan presence at the shows.
Swift took the stage at La Défense Arena in Paris tonight about 8 p.m. (2 p.m. Et), heralded with a countdown clock and the Lesley Gore song You Don’t Own Me. She began her Lover set with Miss Americana.
New songs for the tour included So High School, I Can Do It With a Broken Heart, But Daddy I Love Him, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me, Down Bad, and Fortnight.

John Lennon was a musical genius, but he said plenty of ridiculous things, such as that he wrote the first feminist song. No, he didn’t. More than that, it’s highly dubious that the song in question even counts as a feminist song because of its offensive lyrics.
John Lennon wrote the most offensive feminist song ever
The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features an interview from 1980. In it, John explained the title of his most controversial solo song: “Woman Is the N***** of the World.” “That’s something Yoko said in 1968 in an interview,” he said. “It was just such a powerful statement, a few years later I turned it into a song. So it’s her title and my song.
“Actually, I think ‘Woman Is the N*****of the World’ is the first women’s liberation song that came out,...

Saturday was the last full day of music at SXSW 2024, and the exodus had begun by early afternoon, with many catching flights out of town just as large numbers of emerald-bedecked St. Patrick’s Day celebrants reclaimed the streets of Austin. But wait! Don’t go yet! There were still tons of brilliant, strange, surprising sounds coming from the venues that make Austin what it is. Here are the best things we saw on March 16.

On her first two albums, 2019’s Essentials and 2021’s Sensational, Danish R&b singer Erika de Casier displayed a preternatural sense of creative and personal self-assurance. Her lyrical modus operandi fell somewhere between sly defiance and cool detachment as she flexed her career ambitions while shrugging off bad dates. Perhaps it’s fitting, then, that de Casier was launched into international recognition in 2023 by co-writing K-pop group NewJeans’s “Super Shy,” a song about overcoming insecurity.
With Still, her first album as a newly minted hitmaker, she unravels her typically unbothered persona, expressing a newfound degree of doubt and romantic turmoil. The album roughly tracks the course of a tumultuous relationship from nascent flirtation to post-breakup reconciliation, placing de Casier in unfamiliar emotional territory.
This arc begins in typical de Casier fashion with “Home Alone,” a showcase of her signature retro-futuristic production grounded in the sounds of Y2K-era R&b.

More than 60 years after it was recorded, Lesley Gore‘s “Misty” is the hottest song on TikTok. Gore’s 1963 take on the Erroll Garner standard achieved a first-place finish in the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart thanks to its use in a widespread trend.
Gore’s shuffling rendition of “Misty” has appeared in more than 1.8 million TikToks. In recent months, the song has provided the soundtrack for a viral meme, in which participants show how their appearance changes with or without a particular attribute. As memes are wont to do, the “Misty” bit has evolved to become self-referential.

What better way to enter 2024 than with Christina Aguilera leading a Las Vegas crowd in some self-affirmations to the beat of her song “Vanity?” “Damn, I look sexy. Damn, I look good,” the singer said. “There’s no shame in giving yourself a little extra love.”
Aguilera marked her return to Las Vegas after 2019’s 10-month The Xperience with a sexier, Burlesqueier, and more intimate show at the Venetian’s Voltaire Belle de Nuit, a newly opened venue, christened in November by Kylie Minogue.

It’s a good time to be a fan of filmmaker Mike Mendez. Not only did he contribute to the horror anthology Satanic Hispanics, which received a theatrical release a few months ago and is coming soon to Blu-ray, but now Synapse Films has given his awesome 2000 horror comedy The Convent (watch it Here) a limited edition 4K release! Copies of this release can be purchased directly from Synapse Films, or through Diabolik DVD.
Directed by Mendez from a screenplay by Chaton Anderson, The Convent has the following synopsis: In 1960, a young woman named Christine enters St. Francis Boarding School for Girls and lays waste to the resident nuns. Four decades later, a group of college students head to the long-abandoned building late one night to tag it with their fraternity letters, little knowing that rumors of the place being haunted are terrifyingly true. Synapse Films have announced a Limited Edition Uhd & Blu-ray Slipcover combo for Mike Mendez’s much-cherished The Convent (a personal fave of mine Fyi).
From its opening massacre, set to the strains of (appropriately enough) Lesley Gore, The Convent is an in-your-face fright film with a full-blooded sense of humor. Director Mike Mendez both embraces and skewers the traditions of supernatural/possession cinema, with wicked twists that upend expectations and deliver jolts and laughs in equal measure. Not for the devout or the easily offended, the film gives Barbeau one of her best roles as the motorcycle-riding, shotgun-wielding Christine, with bonus appearances by fellow genre icon Bill Moseley (The Devils Rejects) and rapper/actor Coolio. The Convent rocked audiences at festivals including Sundance and Fantasia, but has long been unavailable on disc. Now you can possess its uncensored U.S. debut remastered in Dolby Vision 4K from the original uncut...

The first of many great moments in Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour movie: Right as the lights went down, the girl in Row H spoke up. “Oh my God, I should have asked permission before now, but we’re all gonna sing, right?” she pleaded in the dark. “Because I wanna sing!” A woman seated a few rows in front replied, “Sing loud and proud, sister.” And that’s all the discussion anyone needed about that. Because this was opening night of the Eras concert film, and nothing could have...

How do we measure the impact of a musician in 2023? Streams can be bought. Awards can be finessed. Is it when demand for show tickets leads to a congressional hearing about Ticketmaster’s policies? Or when flight attendants shout out a fanbase making a pilgrimage to see a tour opener? Or when TikToks of merch inspirations and setlist predictions rack up millions of views? Nearly a decade ago, a headline ran declaring ‘Taylor Swift Is The Music Industry’ and those with even the slightest pulse on pop culture can tell...

The Bangles frontwoman Susanna Hoffs has announced a new album, a collection of covers called The Deep End. The project is out April 7th via Baroque Folk, while the first taste of the LP — a cover of The Rolling Stones’ 1966 track “Under My Thumb” — is available to stream now.
Produced by Peter Asher, The Deep End sees Hoffs tackle classics from the Stones, Squeeze, and Leslie Gore, as well as modern songs by artists like Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, and Brandy Clark. It arrives at the same time as The Bird Has Flown, the artist’s debut novel. Pre-orders for both the album and the book are ongoing.
While she admits to loving the Stones and “Under My Thumb” — “I’ve listened to that song on repeat since it came out in the mid-’60s,” she recalled in a statement — covering the track presented Hoffs with the opportunity to practice a little gender trouble.

During Week 5 of “America’s Got Talent: All-Stars,” the superfan voters made their choice for who they want to see in the finale, and it was good news for child ventriloquist Ana-Maria Margean. The talented tyke initially rose to fame when she won “Romania’s Got Talent” 2021, but now she’s taken her puppet skills to the U.S.A. where she’s hoping to prevail again. The only other act from this week that advanced to the finale was Tom Ball, a singer from “Britain’s Got Talent” 2022 who earned the group Golden Buzzer.
Over the years, ventriloquists have found wild success on the American version of Simon Cowell‘s worldwide talent search. Blow the dust off your wired microphone, there’s a new “House Party” movie in theaters.
The remake of the 1990 movie hails from LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Entertainment, as well as the O.G. film’s distributor New Line Cinema. (Warner Bros. put this one out theatrically; it was originally meant to be an HBO Max movie released last summer.) Considering the early reviews — IndieWire’s Jude Dry called it an “uneven” film, one “that skates by on celebrity cameos,” like those from James and his NBA pals — 2023’s “House Party” probably should have stayed on streaming.
Stephen Glover wrote this “House Party” with his “Atlanta” colleague Jamal Olori. The 2023 reboot, which is technically the sixth movie in the franchise, is directed by Charles “Calmatic” Kidd II, who is mostly known for doing music videos and TV commercials to this point.

This The Handmaid’s Tale review contains spoilers.
It’s no wonder this whole season has been lit like a séance; thematically it started dark, and it stayed that way. Anybody expecting a healing arc for post-escape June will have been left wanting, because season four was all about revenge. That’s where it started – with Esther Keyes stabbing her abuser to death and then crawling into June’s maternal embrace – and that’s where it’s ended – with baby Nichole smeared in the blood of her mother’s now-dead rapist. June’s not the only one who takes the big swings. This show’s no slouch on that front either.
In ‘The Wilderness’, June was made to choose between acceptance and justice, to decide between the “count our blessings” and “out of sight, out of mind” homilies of Luke and Rita, and her visceral need for retribution. Even though it...

If you ask us, there's a new dark horse candidate for Record of the Year at the 2022 Grammys. In other words, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift should start preparing their acceptance speeches now. Indeed, American Idol viewers were in for the tease of a lifetime during the Hollywood Week duets episode on Monday, March 22. This came after contestants Camille Lamb and Althea Grace put their differences aside to nail their performance of the Lesley Gore standard "You Don't Own Me." Earlier in the episode, Camille and Althea were clearly at odds with one another and struggled to get along, with Althea telling the camera, "Both of us feel this weird tension." Finally, Katy had to...

Helen Reddy, the Australian pop singer who died Tuesday at age 78, was an unlikely pop superhero. She sang in a smooth timbre that never lost its becalmed manner — call her the anti-Joplin — and most of the Seventies hits for which she’s known (“Delta Dawn,” “No Way to Treat a Lady,” “Angie Baby”) were the essence of the smooth pop that appealed to baby boomers then approaching their settling-down thirties. Reddy was more of a regular presence on talk and variety shows and in Vegas than at rock clubs.

As a movie, “Promising Young Woman,” the debut feature from “Killing Eve” writer/director Emerald Fennell out April 17 via Focus Features, defies easy categorization. Anchored by a star turn from Carey Mulligan, the film blends equal parts thriller and pitch-black comedy with occasional dashes of traditional rom-com and ‘90s noir drama structures. It’s all told through the unique, stylized lens of Fennell, who navigates the viewer through a unique take on post-#MeToo society.
The film’s eclectic mix of genres with a strong female perspective will also be at the forefront of its official soundtrack, due April 3 via Capitol Records. The album will feature eight all-new songs created for the film, including four covers and four original songs. Two of the album’s originals are written and performed by Cyn, whose first single and video from the project, “Drinks,” was released Friday (March 6.) The “Drinks” video, directed by Taylor Fauntleroy,...

Longtime Grammy telecast producer Ken Ehrlich has delivered his Grammy swan song (figuratively and literally), and it couldn’t have happened without … Walt Whitman. To usher out his 40-year era as the guiding light behind some of TV’s greatest musical moments, Ehrlich chose the song “I Sing the Body Electric” from the 1980 movie musical “Fame” and assembled quite the formidable choir to perform it at the January 26 ceremony: Camila Cabello, Cyndi Lauper, Ben Platt, Common and War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter will tackle vocals, with musical accompaniment provided by Jack Antonoff (guitar), Gary Clark Jr. (electric guitar), Lang Lang (piano) and The Ricky Minor Band. Reimagining the choreography was a “Fame” original: Debbie Allen.

Kristin Chenoweth and Ariana Grande are nobody's playthings, and their cover of "You Don't Own Me" makes sure everyone knows. The sensual tune - originally sang by Lesley Gore in 1963 - makes a powerful statement about a woman refusing to be objectified. It's the perfect song for the former Hairspray Live! costars to collaborate on, considering their championing of female empowerment. The duet also appears on Chenoweth's new album For the Girls, which features Jennifer Hudson, Dolly Parton, and Reba McEntire (consider us hooked). Above, listen to Kristin Chenoweth and Ariana Grande's gorgeous rendition of "You Don't Own Me," and sing it at the top of your lungs!

When Rashida Jones paid tribute to her father Quincy Jones recently at a Netflix Fysee event in Hollywood, she assured him there would never be another person like him.
“I hope not,” the elder Jones cracked.
“No, there won’t be,” Rashida replied. “Don’t worry.”
The occasion for the tribute was a screening of the Netflix documentary Quincy, which Rashida directed with Alan Hicks. Over a span of 124 minutes it illustrates why there will never be, and could never be, another Quincy Jones. His accomplishments are too rare, too varied and unprecedented to be repeated.
“The feedback’s been great,” Rashida says of the film, which earlier this year won a Grammy Award for Best Music Film. “The whole purpose to make the film was really to give people the feeling of hanging out with my dad, like the kind of intimate hang that I personally want you to have.

It’s a shame that “You Don’t Nomi,” a new documentary about the failure and reevaluation of Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 pulp film “Showgirls,” doesn’t live up to its truly inspired title. A play on the movie’s enigmatic, beguiling, and totally unhinged protagonist Nomi Malone, played by Elizabeth Berkeley in a career-defining (and -ending) role, the title calls to mind Lesley Gore’s 1963 classic “You Don’t Own Me” — a connection that amuses at first glance, but becomes quite tenuous once you think about it. The same could be said for “You Don’t Nomi.”
For the uninitiated, “Showgirls” follows a young Nomi Malone as she arrives in Las Vegas with dreams of becoming a dancer. Fresh off the success of “Basic Instinct,” Verhoeven attracted top-tier talent of the era like Kyle MacLachlan and Gina Gershon, both of whom thought they were signing onto a grittier, more daring “Basic Instinct.

Hannah Brown is getting another shot at finding her fierce love, and this time, she's not letting any labels get in her way.
ABC dropped the first promo for Brown's upcoming season of The Bachelorette on Friday morning, and it's obvious that the former beauty queen is taking her new role in stride. The fairy tale-themed trailer has Brown dressed like a modern-day Cinderella in a light blue jumpsuit with a dazzling attached skirt, a sash, and a tiara (a nod to Brown's past as Miss Alabama 2018) to top it off. But as she struts through a forest of trees and red roses bloom in her wake, Brown sheds the skirt, tiara, and sash, with Grace's cover of Lesley Gore's 1963 hit song "You Don't Own Me" playing in the background.
"Think you know her? Think again," the video reads.

Whatever she planned to sing that evening was scrapped when the news rolled in on people’s phones. Ann Wilson performed a scorching version of Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday.
Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me,” produced by the legendary Quincy Jones, became a Number Two hit in 1964. Her version pairs self-assertive lyrics — “Don’t tell me what to do/ Don’t tell me what to say” — with a syrupy arrangement: sweeping strings, layered backing vocals.
Wilson replaced all that sweetness with something nasty and ominous. Her electric guitarist opened the song with a gnarled solo, and the keyboardist played haunted-house riffs.

Pick any critical cultural moment of the last six decades, and you’re likely to find Quincy Jones’ fingerprints somewhere on the tape. In those 60 years, he has toured with Ray Charles as a teenager, written chart-toppers for Lesley Gore, arranged music for Frank Sinatra, produced Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” and launched the careers of Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith, and Whoopi Goldberg, to name a few. His name is synonymous with black culture, American music, and humanitarianism. But few have had the privilege to sit by Qunicy’s side holding his hand as he narrates one of countless stories stored away in his ever-sharp and creative mind. His daughter, the actress (now filmmaker) Rashida Jones, is one of them — and in the new documentary “Quincy,” she graciously shares the rarefied experience with the rest of the world.
