- During WW2, Robert "Bob" Gottschall enlisted in the army and became part of the US Signal Corp. After the war, he and his family traveled to Japan, Okinawa, and Taiwan. He retired a Lieutenant Colonel and received a 21 gun salute at his memorial service in 2005.
- While Bob Gottschall was stationed in Taiwan with the US Army in the 1950s, he built a little league baseball field near what today is the Taipei American School.
