It isn’t often that a movie remotely related to Jeff Nichols‘ Midnight Special will actually offer you insight from a set of pictures, but this quirky, sci-fi effort gives you a lot to think about with this set of images.
If you aren’t familiar with Nichols, the writer/director of the underappreciated Mud and Take Shelter is quickly proving himself one of the best storytellers in the game.
If you aren’t familiar with Midnight Special, the film stars Michael Shannon as a father who is on the run with his son Alton (Jaeden Lieberher). Alton has mysterious powers, and his father just wants to keep him away from people, but that turns into an escalating chase as more an more people get involved in the hunt.
That opens a lot of doors, and at the same time doesn’t tell you much, but the images offer a bit more.

Sundance missed out on the opportunity to present Shotgun Stories (2007) to the world (Berlin landed the film instead) but made up for it for it with Jeff Nichols films number two Take Shelter (2011) and three Mud (2012). The filmmaker originally from Little Rock, Arkansas lined up a major studio gig for Midnight Special, re-teamed with Michael Shannon and added Joel Edgerton, Adam Driver, Kirsten Dunst, young protag Jaeden Lieberher and Sam Shepard on the January shoot. Worth noting, that’s January of 2014. Unlike Take Shelter, a film that needed its own good dose of special effects, Warner Bros. has tried to figure out the best course of action to unveil this original piece. Tied with a March 18th, this is likely headed to SXSW (Dunst let slip out of the bag) but we’re thinking a special screening (Sundance’s way to incorporate a major studio film from auteurs working for...

Check out the first trailer for the highly anticipated Midnight Special.
In the sci-fi thriller Midnight Special, writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon) goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy’s special powers. What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever in this genre – defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.
Midnight Special stars Oscar nominee Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Jaeden Lieberher and Oscar nominee Sam Shepard. Rounding out the main cast are Bill Camp, Scott Haze and Paul Sparks.

Movie studios, take note. Here’s how you announce a film is being made available to an audience. With today’s announcement that Tribeca Films have picked up Bob Byington’s comedy Somebody Up There Likes Me for a March 2013 video-on-demand and theatrical run, some of the stars of the film (and other acquaintances) got together to celebrate, or something to that effect.
In the below video one can find star Nick Offerman (Parks & Recs‘ Ron Swanson) with wife Megan Mullally and Community‘s Alison Brie (the latter is not involved in the film) partaking in some celebratory festivities and trying to remember details of said film. It’s hilarious and best of all, a bit different from most stale announcements. We quite liked the film, also starring Keith Poulson and Jess Weixler, at SXSW saying, “Byington is fully in control and has crafted the most detached comedy of the year thus far.
