- He was responsible for issuing the initial batch of membership cards to the Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph & Theatre Union (BECTU) and held the very first membership card. He became known amongst union members as 'Member No. 1'.
- During his active service in the Middle East, as part of the Army Film Unit, he survived two almost fatal accidents - first after driving over a landmine near Tobruk, and second, when his ship, HMS Sikh, was sunk. After the last incident he was transported to northern Italy as a prisoner of war. After escape and recaptures he ended up at Offlag 79 camp, near Brunswick before finally being freed in 1945 by American troops.
