Nicolas Cage just might be the most terrifying serial killer onscreen…if he really is the murderer.
Cage stars in and produces “Longlegs,” the latest horror film from writer/director Oz Perkins who previously helmed “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” (2015), “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House” (2016), and “Greta and Hansel” (2020).
Perkins, the son of “Psycho” star Anthony Perkins, is officially credited as Osgood Perkins for “Longlegs.” The film is produced by Cage’s Saturn Pictures, Range, Traffic, Oddfellows, and C2 Motion Picture Group. Actress
The feature centers on a series of occult murders that are connected to an FBI detective’s (Maika Monroe) past. A cold case is reawakened; Cage, Blair Underwood, and Alicia Witt co-star in the film.

Ever get that feeling that something's creeping up right behind you? Eh, don't worry about it, I'm sure it's nothing. Nothing, that is, except the news that one of the freakiest horror movies ever made is about to get a long-awaited sequel.
Back in 2015, writer/director David Robert Mitchell unleashed the tense and quietly terrifying "It Follows" upon unsuspecting viewers. Critics hailed it as an instant classic while audiences ate it up and asked for seconds, helping the very responsibly-budgeted horror flick make more than 20 times its cost during its theatrical run. It was, by all reasonable metrics, an unmitigated success and the unofficial beginning of star Maika Monroe's ascension to genuine scream queen territory. Now, almost a decade later, indie-friendly studio Neon is throwing their distribution and production muscle behind a sequel, titled "They Follow."

David Robert Mitchell is finally making his long-awaited followup to horror hit It Follows. Mitchell is reteaming with star Maika Monroe on They Follow, with Tom Quinn’s Neon introducing the package to buyers at AFM this week.
They Follow will once again star Monroe as Jay Height, whom audiences met in the 2014 film as a young woman who, after having sex with her boyfriend for the first time, learns she will now be hunted by a mysterious entity. The only way to temporarily stave off death is to pass on the curse to someone else, who will become next on the list followed by the entity.
The film grossed $21.9 million globally on a budget of around $1 million. Over the years, talent behind It Follows has discussed a sequel, with Neon’s Quinn suggesting in 2015 it could involve people turning the tables on the entity and following it to its source.

Even amid the concurrent strikes of the past year, there’s been a lot of bonus hand-wringing over the state of the independent producer. Producers, after all, have no SAG or WGA equivalent. Where then does the workaday, blue-collar movie producer find community support? Or work with peers to advance their collective interests?
Well… linking up with a good Artist Development cohort is a great place to star. Which is why we’re thrilled to announce seven new Fellows representing six new projects to kick off the 2023 edition (and 23rd overall!) of the Film Independent Producing Lab.

In case Cady Heron hasn’t told you yet, October 3 is Mean Girls Day. To celebrate that unofficial holiday, Paramount turned to TikTok. For one day only, the distributor of Mean Girls uploaded the 2004 film across a series of 23 videos.
The videos went live on an official Mean Girls TikTok account. Though the full movie is no longer available there, Paramount is still using the account to engage with fans of the cult hit.

One-off ’Mean Girls Day’ event comes three months ahead of release of new theatrical film.
In a bid to drive engagement with younger audiences, Paramount chopped up its 2004 high school comedy Mean Girls into 23 segments and dropped the film on TikTok for free on Tuesday.
The move, believed to be the first time a major Hollywood studio has put an entire film on the social platform, was a promotional tactic to raise awareness among Gen Z and younger Millennial viewers ahead of the January 2024 theatrical release of a new iteration of the cult film.

Writers Blast Paramount for Putting ‘Mean Girls’ on TikTok: ‘Another Way Not to Pay Us for Our Work’
Paramount angered writers, producer and fans of “Mean Girls” on Tuesday by sharing the entire 2004 comedy on TikTok in 23 parts.
“As the WGA strike comes to a close, studios find another way not to pay us for our work,” wrote “It Follows” producer Rebecca Green on Tuesday.
“Every filmmaker dreams about cutting up their film into 23 parts. Congrats!” said “The Tale” producer Mynette Louie.
Like Spotify, TikTok does pay royalties to musical artists, labels and distributors with licensing contracts. However, the amount of money being shared directly with artists has been criticized by musicians including Snoop Dogg.
The rapper voiced his support for the WGA strike in May, saying, “Some of these artists are streaming millions and millions and millions and millions of f—king streams and they don’t got no millions of dollars in the pot.”
“Another thing that occurred to me about the whole Mean Girls Tiktok thing.

He’s set to star alongside previously announced cast members including Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Finn Wittrock, Jack Dylan Grazer, August Blanco Rosenstein and Lily Rabe.
The feature directorial debut of Rabe and Hamish Linklater is based on Chuck Klosterman’s New York Times bestselling novel of the same name. Linklater penned the screenplay based on Klosterman’s New York Times best-selling novel, which takes place in the fictional town of Owl, North Dakota, which is semi-isolated from the 1980s pop culture that surrounds it. The story follows three residents — an old man who spends his afternoons reminiscing in the local coffee shop, a depressed high school backup quarterback and a new English teacher at the local high school — whose lives, along with those of the town’s other residents, are upended by a whiteout blizzard.

Congratulations to all my L.A. peers on victory of the Rams at last week’s Super Bowl, but I have to admit that the highlight of the show for this sports-illiterate viewer had nothing to do with musclemen or their ball, nor that invigorating half-time show (though Kendrick Lamar’s cardboard boxes bit was legendary). I perked up Jordan Peele’s “Nope” trailer, a pileup of shocked cutaways to a very menacing something in the sky: It said just enough about why we should anticipate this late-July release without saying much at all.
Above all, it said Peele is still at it, directing singular horror-comedies with a calculated intent to entertain and enlighten. Six years after his debut “Get Out” became a global behemoth, here’s a modern U.S. filmmaker with a rare ability to take his time making original movies with the full backing of a studio’s dollars.

Persistently low compensation and the financial chaos brought on by the pandemic have led hundreds of film producers to try to organize as a union — nearly 50 years after a court ruling shot down attempts by the Producers Guild of America to do the same. On Thursday, a group of 108 mostly independent producers — with letters from hundreds more prospective members — announced the leadership of the new Producers Union with “It Follows” producer Rebecca Green as president. Green says that while she and her colleagues in the new union had been organizing before the pandemic, industry shutdowns starting last summer eliminated work opportunities for producers and denied them the same financial relief actors, writers and directors had from their own unions. “Even back in my days of working at the Sundance Institute a decade ago, I was having talks with producers who were telling me how they would make these financially successful...

A group of 108 producers have banded together to form the Producers Union, a supervisory union and collective bargaining organization for feature film producers in the United States.
Spearheading the organization are Rebecca Green (“It Follows”) and Chris Moore (“Manchester by the Sea”). The group has elected an executive committee with Green as its president and Effie T. Brown (“Dear White People”) as vice president.
Currently, the union currently excludes documentary and TV producers, although “our goal is to eventually include documentary and television producers,” the site states. “We chose to be very specific in our work with the assumption that we could get off the ground faster if we focused on one type of producer first. Once we have industry support, we can decide whether to expand our reach.”

There’s a new union in town: the Producers Union, which is the first all-new Hollywood labor union to be formed in decades.
More than 100 indie feature filmmakers have unanimously ratified its constitution, and more than 300 have signed letters of intent to join. “After decades of working without basic protections, low and/or inconsistent wages, no employer healthcare contributions and an industry insistence that they should work for free to demonstrate their commitment, film producers are taking a stand,” organizers said in a statement.
The Producers Union website launches today.
Rebecca Green is the new union’s first president. Green, whose producing credits include It Follows and I’ll See You in My Dreams, is the founder and editor-in-chief of Dear Producer, a website designed “to challenge archaic business models that stifle diverse and original voices and to advocate for innovation, transparency, and fiscal responsibility from our industry.”

A group of 108 film producers announced Thursday that they are seeking to form a union, as they aim to address low pay and skimpy health care benefits.
Calling itself the Producers Union, the group wants to negotiate a minimum basic agreement that will provide health benefits and set a floor for producer fees.
“We’re one of the very few people on a set that don’t have a union,” said Rebecca Green, producer of “It Follows” and the lead organizer of the group. “We’re seen as the ones making all the money. But the majority of producers are really struggling to pay their bills.”
Producers are considered supervisors or employers under the law, which creates enormous hurdles to any effort to organize. The Producers Guild of America — which represents 8,000 members — fought over a span of decades to represent producers in labor negotiations with the studios. But those efforts...

A group of 108 Hollywood feature film producers announced Thursday that they intend to form a new Producers’ Union to organize for better wages and working conditions from studios, networks and streaming giants.
Rebecca Green, whose producing credits include the 2013 horror film “It Follows,” was announced as the first president, with other officers including Vice Presidents Effie T. Brown (“Dear White People”) and Monique Walton (“Bull”), Secretary Avril Z. Speaks (“Hosea”) and Treasurer Chris Moore (“Manchester by the Sea”).
The union would be the first to represent film producers, whom Green noted have often struggled to make a decent living from their work despite the rise in production with the onslaught of content-starved streaming services.
“In a recent Dear Producer survey, we found that more than 44% of producers in the U.S. — almost half — weren’t able to make a living from producing in 2020,” Green said. “That is beyond unacceptable and...

Despite their flashy reputation of wielding the money behind the movies, film producers often can’t sustain a career in the profession, a new study concludes. According to a survey by Dear Producer, a digital platform that connects and amplifies the voices of producers, 41% of producers said they earned $25,000 or less exclusively from producing in 2019 — the year before the pandemic decimated their incomes. Last year, 56% percent of the 474 respondents said they earned $25,000 or less — and more than a quarter earned less than $2,500 from producing in 2020. Respondents who participated in the survey had a producer or “produced by” credit on at least one commercially released feature length film in the last 10 years; more than half of the participants were women. Almost two-thirds of participating producers said they earned their primary income through producing in 2019, while that share dropped to 56% last year. (L-r) Rebecca Green, Sarah Epstein and Kristian Moliere.
The producers of The Babadook and US horror movie It Follows are teaming up for a feature adaptation of Small Spaces, a young adult novel by Australian author Sarah Epstein.
Triptych Pictures’ Kristian Moliere and US producer Rebecca Green have hired Shelly Lauman to write and direct the psychological thriller.
Epstein’s debut novel follows Tash Carmody, who has been traumatised since childhood when she witnessed her gruesome imaginary friend Sparrow lure young Mallory Fisher away from a carnival.
At the time nobody believed Tash and she has since come to accept that Sparrow wasn’t real. Now aged 17, as disturbing memories resurface, Tash starts to see Sparrow again.
She realises Mallory is the key to unlocking the truth about a dark secret connecting them, raising the questions: Does Sparrow exist after all? Or is Tash more dangerous to others than she thinks?...

Effie Brown delivered the keynote speech at the Sundance Film Festival’s Producers Brunch on Sunday, sharing some of the insights she’s accrued during her decades-long career as a film and television producer. Brown, whose credits include “Dear White People,” “Real Women Have Curves,” and “But I’m a Cheerleader,” spoke about why producing is not a job, but a “calling,” as she puts it. She also spoke about her efforts to elevate marginalized voices in front of and behind the camera.
Read her full speech, which was shared exclusively with IndieWire, below:

One thing I learned on this 20-plus producing career is that you can’t go it alone. I needed a community — a support system. These women represent some of mine…...

Streaming services Netflix and Amazon have been crashing the awards and festival circuit for a few years now, but is there success an outright revolution, or just a robust new business model? Either way, the producing community gives it a thumb’s-up — with reservations.
To Anne Carey, who produced “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” which earned an Oscar nom for star Melissa McCarthy, “the obvious upside is opportunity: more movies getting made, more audiences reached, and less reliance on the somewhat broken foreign-sales-driven models, in terms of determining cast viability and budget for independently minded films.”
“[While] simultaneously finding an even larger audience,” says Xyz Films’ Nate Bolotin.
Each deal is different, but a streamer will typically offer “cost plus,” covering budget, producing fee and sometimes a “premium” subbing for backend participation on a wholly owned project.
