Stephen Espinoza, most recently a partner at entertainment law firm Ziffren Brittenham, has been tapped as Evp and General Manager of Showtime Sports and Event Programming, the network announced today. He will be responsible for the day-to-day activities of the group and its pay-per-view unit; managing relationships with distributors, talent and suppliers; and the acquisition and licensing of programming. The move is the final one in a game of musical chairs that began when longtime HBO Sports chief Ross Greenburg left after 33 years at the premium channel. He was replaced last month by Showtime’s sports head, Ken Hershman, leaving the vacancy at Showtime that Espinoza has now filled. (Greenburg landed last week at a producer at NBC Sports Group.) While at Ziffren Brittenham, Espinoza repped numerous A-list film and TV clients, He also handled boxers Mike Tyson and Oscar De La Hoya and was lead counsel for De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions,...

Ross Greenburg, who in July departed as president of HBO Sports, has been tapped to produce documentaries for the newly formed NBC Sports Group, which includes the NBC Sports Network, Golf Channel and NBC. He also will produce Costas Tonight, the new monthly interview show that will debut in spring 2012 on the NBC Sports Network — the new name of Comcast’s rebranded Versus channel that launches January 2. That’s also the airdate of Greenburg’s first documentary, Cold War On Ice: Summit Series ’72, which looks at a hockey series between Canadian All-Stars and the Soviet Union during the Cold War in 1972. Greenburg founded Ross Greenburg Productions after ending his 33-year career at HBO, the last of 11 of which were spent as president of the sports division. He previously worked with Costas on the premium network on the sports broadcaster’s On the Record and CostasNOW. “Ross is a master...

HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg may have lost pay-per-view boxing stud Manny Pacquaio to rival Showtime for a May fight against Shane Mosley, but that has nothing to do with why he's leaving the premium network after 33 years, he told the New York Times. "I lived through [Julio Cesar] Chavez and [Mike] Tyson," he said, shouting down a chorus suggesting he was fired. Greenburg did admit to being burned out by the difficulty in dealing with boxing promoters, however. HBO has yet to name a replacement, but co-president Richard Plepler and programming...

Ross Greenburg, the president of HBO Sports for the last 11 years, is not renewing his contract according to Espn. "We believe that Ross' track record speaks for itself," HBO co-presidents Richard Plepler and Michael Lombardo said in a joint statement given to Espn.com, confirming his departure, which has been in the works for months. "He has helped redefine the sports programming genre and set an extraordinary standard of excellence in the industry. We will miss his leadership, vision, creativity and passion for sports television." Espn speculates that HBO losing Manny Pacquiao to Showtime was a factor in the departure. Under Greenberg, HBO's "Hard Knocks" series, which details life inside an NFL training camp, garnered three Sports Emmy...

Ross Greenburg is leaving HBO after 33 years at the pay cable network, the last 11 as president of HBO Sports. “We believe that Ross’ track record speaks for itself,” HBO Co-President Richard Plepler and Michael Lombardo, President, HBO Programming said in a joint statement. “He has helped redefine the sports programming genre and set an extraordinary standard of excellence in the industry. We will miss his leadership, vision, creativity and passion for sports television.” Earlier this year, Greenburg was criticized by the promoter of pay-per-view boxing star Manny Pacquiao who left HBO for Showtime, but in an interview with the New York Times today Greenburg dismissed the notion that his departure is related to the loss of Pacquiao. "That's a silly rationale," he said. "That added to my angst, but one fight doesn't determine whether I stayed or I didn't stay... I've accomplished everything I hoped for."...

HBO will replay the entire "Hard Knocks: New York Jets" training camp series on Saturday, a day before the Jets and Steelers face off in the Afc Championship game in Pittsburgh. And in a mild surprising twist, HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg has decided to air the uncensored version of the show, uncut with all of Rex Ryan's expletives -- despite the fact that it will begin at 3:00 p.m. on HBO2, when younger Jets fans could, in theory, be watching. HBO came under fire from parents that were apparently offended by...

HBO has pulled the plug on 'Joe Buck Live' after just three episodes, Broadcasting & Cable confirmed today.
The sports talk show, which replaced 'Costas Now' last June, was perhaps best known for its rocky premiere episode, during which 'Howard Stern''s Artie Lange infamously referred to Jessica Simpson as a "fat chick."
Subsequent episodes suffered in the ratings, with its most recent episode pulling in just a 1.2 rating, according to the report.
"Joe Buck is one of the premier broadcasters in our industry. We have made the decision not to continue his talk show and wish him all the best and continued success with his wide array of responsibilities at Fox Sports ... Outrageous comedian Artie Lange has been banned from live sports programming at U.S. cable network HBO following an offensive, expletive-laden rant on a new show.
The Howard Stern Show radio regular upset HBO bosses with an appearance on sportscaster Joe Buck's new show Joe Buck Live on Monday night by making homophobic remarks and swearing through a rant about his dislike of American football team the Dallas Cowboys.
At one point, he took aim at Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who is dating pop star Jessica Simpson, stating, "It's like a white-trash gift from God that the f**king Cowboys have a quarterback whose last name rhymes with homo."
In banning Lange, HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg told the New York Post, "We don't have any interest in his world."
In typical fashion, the controversial comic told Greenburg to "Go f**k yourself, I don't care how important you are in the business."...

New York -- HBO Sports is drawing on Emmy-winning Fox Sports announcer Joe Buck to replace Bob Costas at the network.
Buck will host a quarterly talk show for HBO Sports beginning in May. It will replace "Costas Now," which the NBC sportscaster did at HBO for much of the past seven years. Costas left HBO Sports this week to take a new gig at the Mlb Network.
Buck is play-by-play announcer for Fox Sports' NFL and Major League Baseball telecasts. That won't change, but he'll add the talk show, which HBO said might include a live town-hall-style format.
HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg said he and Buck had been talking for about a year, though they've known each other much longer. The talks grew serious when HBO realized that Costas would leave for Mlb Network, and Greenburg said he moved quickly to sign him.

New York -- Emmy-winning sportscaster Bob Costas is leaving HBO and will join the Mlb Network as a host and play-by-play announcer.
The move doesn't affect his work at NBC Sports, where he has been for nearly three decades. But the Mlb Network said Costas has signed a cable-exclusive deal with them. That would spell the end of Costas' other side jobs in cable, which included "On the Record With Bob Costas" and hosting "Inside the NFL" when it was on HBO. He also has filled in for Larry King on CNN's "Larry King Live."
Terms of the multiyear deal weren't announced.
Costas, a huge baseball enthusiast who has written best-selling books about the game, is a big get for the network. It's easily the biggest talent announcement for the channel since it went on the air Jan. 1.
At Mlb Network, Costas will host original programming as well as serve...

Two of the driving forces behind a who's who of HBO hit programs have been promoted by the premium channel. Executive vps original programming Carolyn Strauss and Sheila Nevins have been upped to president of HBO Entertainment and president of HBO Documentary and Family, respectively. "Carolyn and Sheila have made extraordinary contributions to our programming over many years," HBO chairman and CEO Chris Albrecht said. "Their creative instincts have been instrumental to our success, and I wanted to acknowledge that with these promotions." The promotions, which do not reflect any changes in their responsibilities, will bring four separate programming divisions with top executives of equal stature under Albrecht's oversight. The two other division heads are HBO Films president Colin Callender and HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg.
NEW YORK -- HBO has shifted the Lennox Lewis-Kirk Johnson championship fight from pay-per-view to its premium network after Mike Tyson declined to sign on for the undercard. The June 21 bout, scheduled to take place at Staples Center in Los Angeles, would have featured Lewis and Tyson in separate matchups. But without Tyson as a draw, HBO opted to remove it from pay-per-view rather than risk lackluster buy rates. "We asked the promoters if we could televise the fight live on HBO," HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg said in a statement. "We felt this would be an outstanding event to bring to our subscribers live on the network." The absence of Tyson from the PPV platform deals an uppercut to the cable industry, which relies on the boxer to reap riches for both sides of the revenue split. Last year, the June 8 Tyson-Lewis fight generated nearly one-third of the $363 million the PPV event business generated that year.
NEW YORK -- HBO plans to revisit some of its greatest boxing telecasts in a new primetime documentary series scheduled to debut in March. HBO has greenlighted production on 12 half-hour episodes of the still-untitled series that will take a retrospective look at 12 of the greatest boxing matches or series of matches that it has telecast during the past 30 years on its "World Championship Boxing" franchise. Footage of past fights will be combined with interviews of the fighters, managers and trainers who lived through them, in addition to never-before-seen material from inside and outside the ring. "We have this Treasure Chest of footage sitting in our archives," HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg said. "There are just hours and hours of great stuff we left on the cutting-room floor."...
