With all the buzz surrounding the new Star Wars trilogy and J.J. Abrams helming Episode VII, it’s not hard to imagine Lucasfilm as a bustling beehive of activity. Three new films is big deal and a lot of work – it has to make up for the prequel trilogy, after all – but it comes at a great cost. While Lucasfilm Animation has had great success with Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the company is headed in a new direction that would lead it to a time period never before seen in any film or television series to date. What does this mean for the future of The Clone Wars? Nothing good.
Effectively, The Clone Wars has been canceled. Lucasfilm is no longer producing episodes for the Cartoon Network, but there is a silver lining. Lucasfilm released a statement on starwars.com saying they still have several story arcs they would...

This will take many fans by surprise, but it appears that as a result of Disney taking control of Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise, The Clone Wars animated TV series is set to be cancelled. The massively successful and critically acclaimed series is to be wound down after five series. This is being dubbed the “Star Wars TV massacre” by media outlets and the online reaction has prompted the following statement from Lucasfilm;
“As we enter into an exciting new era focused on the next Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming.”
However, Lucasfilm is planning on putting new small-screen series animated series into production at a later date, which will explore “a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming.” This could really refer to anything at this point.

Cartoon Network lost another established winner Monday after Lucasfilm pulled the plug on Star Wars: Clone Wars.
StarWars.com released this statement announcing that they’re not producing any new episodes for Cartoon Network. Lucasfilm has also postponed the animated comedy series, Star Wars: Detours that was being developed by the Robot Chicken crew of Seth Green, Matthew Senreich, and Todd Grimes. Now that Episodes VII-ix is in full swing, it looks like everything else is taking the back seat.
Clone Wars Supervising Director Dave Filoni had this to say to Clone Wars fans:
Editor’S Pick: Young Justice Postmortem Regrets
“It’s not over yet, in fact the best is yet to come, we have some of the most exciting, most important story arcs still coming your way. Now, what could there be left to tell? Diehard fans of the series know there are still some gaps in there,...

It continued: "After five highly successful and critically acclaimed seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, we feel the time has come to wind down the series.

First, the good news for "Star Wars" fans: Lucasfilm is exploring a new "Star Wars" animated series that will be "set in a time period previously untouched in 'Star Wars' films or programming." Now, that bad news: It's pulling the plug on the Cartoon Network series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars." And the perhaps-not-so-bad news: Lucasfilm is also ditching plans for "Star Wars Detours," a comedic animated series from Seth Green, Matthew Senreich and Todd Grimes, at least for the time being. With three new Star Wars movies in the pipeline, Lucasfilm and Disney today turned its attention to the power of the Force on TV. “Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programing,” the company announced online. Lucasfilm said that it’s “exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or TV programming.” What that new direction will actually be beyond “stay tuned” and will it see Star Wars on Disney Xd is yet to be known — though that is where the boss is leaning. “We really like Star Wars‘ potential on TV, and Disney Xd would be a great home for that,” Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger said when the $4.06 billion deal to buy Lucasfilm was announced on October 30. As expected Lucasfilm has officially announced that Star Wars: The Clone Wars is going to be ending. As a fan of the series I'm a little disappointed, but they also announced that they are developing a new animated series. Not much is known about the series, but they say it will also include Clone Wars story arcs, and that it will include the "most thrilling adventures ever seen." They also revealed that Seth Green's proposed Star Wars Detours will be pushed back until after the release of Star Wars: Episode VII, which is kind of ridiculous. I'm not sure why, they really don't give a good reason, but that's just how it all played out. Read over the press release below, and let us know what you think about this bit of news.

While speculation regarding the future of Star Wars: The Clone Wars ran rampant after the announcement of the Lucasfilm sale to Disney, the most common thought was that the series, whose fifth season recently concluded, would be leaving its home at Cartoon Network and begin airing on Disney Xd. While that is partially correct – it is leaving Cartoon Network – that isn’t the whole story.

After George Lucas sold his Star Wars universe to Disney, many projects outside the movie franchise were left open-ended, awaiting the fate of the new masters at the House of Mouse.
One high profile animated series was Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which was produced for The Cartoon Network. The series was in production of its fifth season when the sale went through, and many fans have speculated what would happen to it after it ended its run this March.
Now we’ve got confirmation that the Clone Wars series will not return for a sixth season. Also, another animated series announced before the sale, a comedy created by Robot Chicken actor Seth Green called Star Wars: Detours, will never get off the ground.
Despite the end of the always creative Star Wars: Clone Wars series, some story arcs, however, are being developed and will be available elsewhere as bonus material.

The first footage of Seth Green’s Lucasfilm Ltd endorsed Star Wars ‘toon” has surfaced online. Star Wars fans can relax a little easier as it’s not quite as “cute” as first expected.
The trailer for Star Wars: Detours was aired at Celebration VI in Orlando, and is a collaboration of Robot Chicken creators Seth Green, Matt Senreich and director Todd Grimes.
Check out the trailer below;
The first thing that is striking is the similarities to the Robot Chicken Star Wars episodes, with the exact same voices applied to characters like the Emperor and Boba Fett. Whilst Star Wars: Detours certainly looks child friendly enough (what, with its bright colours and exaggerated character designs),the humour doesn’t appear to be quite as early-years-friendly as perhaps expected way back when details of this show was first announced.

The team behind Robot Chicken, Seth Green and Matt Senreich, have joined forces with Todd Grimes to develop a new CG animated Star Wars sitcom called Star Wars: Detours. The series takes place in-between Episode III and IV, and gives us a completely comedic take on the Star Wars universe. The first trailer has been released along with three clips from the series, and it's Star Wars on acid.
This is seriously unlike any thing you've seen from Star Wars before. Make sure you have an open mind when you watch this because it's a completely new twist on the universe and the characters. In fact just forget everything you know about Star Wars before you watch this stuff. It might turn you off, but keep in mind, this is mostly meant for kids. The characters are very overly animated... I'm honestly not sure if you're going to like it.

Seems like this Star Wars fad is sticking around. Today at Star Wars Celebration VI, Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matt Senreich, along with their collaborator Todd Grimes, unveiled footage from their new animated series Star Wars: Detours. The series takes place between between Episode III and IV, and of course, Green, Senreich and Grimes have taken comedic liberty with the entire Star Wars universe, with George Lucas' blessing of course. At C2E2 in Chicago, an announcement was made from Lucasfilm’s Director of Fan Relations, Steve Sansweet that is bound to excite every “Star Wars” fan. Sansweet indicated that the new animated series will follow the original cast of “Star Wars” post “Return of the Jedi”.

The Star Wars saga is about to go off in a very different direction, it seems…
Admit it, when you first heard of this story, it wasn't just us that was scrabbling around to check whether it was still April 1st. However, apparently what we're about to tell you is entirely true.
For it seems that LucasFilm, according to Variety, is set to make an animated television comedy series, based around the Star Wars franchise. The firm has hired Jennifer Hill to produce (she's worked on The Backyardigans), with Todd Grimes down to direct.
The writing team boasts The Daily Show's Brendan Hay, while Seth Green and Matthew Senreich have, according to Variety, "creative involvement". The pair created and executive produce Robot Chicken.

Featuring creative involvement from Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, creators/executive producers of Emmy Award-winning "Robot Chicken", as well as writing from Brendan Hay ("The Daily Show"), the new series will look at the "Star Wars" characters with "...a playful and irreverent tone...", produced by Daytime Emmy and Gemini Award-winner Jennifer Hill ("The Backyardigans") and directed by Emmy-nominated Todd Grimes ("Back at the Barnyard").
“There are so many stories taking place in the 'Star Wars' universe, and they don’t all have to focus on the fate of the galaxy,” said Grimes.
"We’re looking at 'Star Wars' from a new perspective; this will be a glimpse at how the rest of the galaxy is affected by the events of the 'Saga'."

Here's an interesting disturbance in the Force: Lucasfilm has announced that it is creating a new animated Star Wars TV series. And it's a comedy, but not in the Jake-Lloyd-unintentional-laughter sort of way.
As strange as it might sound initially, Lucas is putting the project in the right hands. Seth Green and Matthew Senreich from Robot Chicken will develop the series and write episodes with Daily Show writer Brendan Hay. Todd Grimes of the animated Back at the Barnyard will direct.
Said Grimes of the concept, "We're looking at Star Wars from a new perspective; this will be a glimpse at how the rest of the galaxy is affected by the events of the Saga. There's a lot of humor to be mined from that."...

Lucasfilm Animation is working with an impressive team to develop an animated “Star Wars” television comedy series. The line-up of this team includes daytime Emmy and Gemini Award winner Jennifer Hill (“The Backyardians”) producing, Todd Grimes (“Back at the Barnyard”) directing, Brendan Hay (“The Daily Show”) writing, and Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, creators and executive producers of “Robot Chicken” involved creatively.
“Robot Chicken” has done their own stop-motion animation satire of “Star Wars” (that has met to George Lucas’ approval) so we have somewhat of an idea of where this show may be capable of. In Green’s official statement to this project , he lays out the premise for this new animated comedy:
“The ‘Star Wars’ universe is so dense and rich; it’s crazy to think that there aren’t normal, mundane everyday problems in a world so well-defined. And it’s even crazier to think of what those problems might be,...

Star Wars director George Lucas is expanding the sci-fi adventure franchise to give cult fans a laugh - he's planning an animated sitcom for U.S. TV.
The filmmaker is taking a backseat to Back at the Barnyard's Todd Grimes, who will direct the comedy series for Lucasfilm.
According to a statement from the production company, the show will "look at the saga's characters with a playful and irreverent tone".
Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich will work as creative consultants on the project, while Brendan Hay of U.S. TV comedy the Daily Show has signed on as head writer.
Producer Jennifer Hill tells Daily Variety, "They'll be shaping the type of comedy we're looking for and the look of the show."
Lucas' Star Wars franchise has spawned merchandise, video games and spin-off series that have earned more than $22 billion over the last three decades, according to a 2007 report in U.S. magazine Forbes.
An air date has yet to be set for the new animated series.

Lucasfilm announced Monday that they’re developing an animated Star Wars sitcom.
Seth Green (creator of 2 hilarious Robot Chicken Star Wars specials so far) is the creative consultant on the project and seems optimistic:
“Let us assure you this isn’t going to suck as much as you think it is. We can’t guarantee its excellence, but we’re swinging by the fences.”
So far we know it will not be a sketch comedy show like Robot Chicken, and it’s not a spoof. Robot Chicken creator/exec producer Matt Senreich said it will be a story comedy and “character driven.” It may include crossover appearances from the movie characters but as of now no crossovers with the hit Star Wars: The Clone Wars series are planned.
Producer Jennifer Hill (The Backyardigans) said the length of the episodes has not been decided, but they will be no longer than half-hours.

News today from a galaxy not so far away - The Milky Way, to be exact - should set the hearts of Star Wars fans racing with excitement or dread. Variety reports that LucasFilm Animation is hard at work on a new Star Wars animated series. The potentially troubling part? It's a comedy.
The new (and presently untitled) series will be produced by Gemini Award and Daytime Emmy winner Jennifer Hill, and Todd Grimes will sit in the director's chair. The most intriguing detail about the production team is that Seth Green and Matthew Senreich - the guys behind Robot Chicken - will have "creative involvement." Green and Senreich have demonstrated that they can make Star Wars funny with the Robot Chicken: Star Wars specials, so there may be hope for this yet...

Lucasfilm Animation is developing an all-new animated "Star Wars" series with a "playful and irreverent tone" that plans to look at the more "comedic aspects" of the "Star Wars" universe according to a press release from Lucasfilm.
"Robot Chicken" creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich along with "The Daily Show" writer Brendan Hay will be creatively involved in the project which Jennifer Hill ("The Backyardigans") will produce and Todd Grimes ("Back at the Barnyard") will direct.
Cartoon Network currently airs the kiddie-aimed CG-animated action series spin-off "Star Wars: The Clone Wars". No word on which network would air this newest incarnation.

Yesterday, Lucasfilm issued a press release revealing plans for an unusual new "Star Wars" TV series. Building on the success of high-profile parodies from the "Family Guy" and "Robot Chicken" crews, the Lucas camp is planning a sitcom series based on the famous galaxy far, far away. "Chicken" creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich will be "creatively involved"; the show will also feature the writing talents of Brendan Hay ("Frank TV") and direction from Todd Grimes ("Back at the Barnyard").
Lucasfilm promises a "playful and irreverent" tone, something that will likely find parallels with the "Star Wars" treatments seen in the two themed "Chicken" specials. Green summed it up very well in a statement, with a description that could apply equally to both the plans for this coming series and the tone of his previous parodies: "The Star Wars universe is so dense and rich; it’s crazy to think that there aren’t normal,...

It looks like Lucasfilm has grown jealous of the success Robot Chicken and Family Guy have had doing animated parodies of Star Wars. Grabbing the reins, the studio has announced that they are working on a comedic animated Star Wars series.
Star Wars Comedy Series
Lucasfilm has hired Jennifer Hill to produce and Todd Grimes to direct. Brendan Hay has been given the responsibility of putting together a script, and is expected to have help from Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, the creators of Robot Chicken.

Diversification is the key to maintaining a franchise's longevity. Marvel Comics, Disney and DC Comics are all examples of companies that have figured this strategy out for their franchises. And as more companies begin to enter their second and third generation of fans you will see this path start to get walked by more corporations with creative IPs.
Case in point for today's story: Lucasfilm and its Star Wars franchise. What began as a movie series and branched out into animated series and live-action shows continues to modify its styling. Now Star Wars is entering the comedy genre.
The company that Lucas built is employing proven talent to realize this new chapter in its vision of a galaxy far, far away. For the story component of this as-yet untitled comedic Star Wars animated series there will be involvement from Seth Green and Matthew Senrich, the co-creators of Robot Chicken. That...

San Francisco, Calif. April 5, 2010) – Lucasfilm Animation is currently developing an all-new animated Star Wars series, focusing its efforts on the comedic aspects of the “galaxy far, far away.” Featuring creative involvement from Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, creators and executive producers of the Emmy and Annie Award-winning Robot Chicken, as well as writing from The Daily Show’s Brendan Hay, the series will look at the Saga’s characters with a playful and irreverent tone. The series will be produced by Daytime Emmy and Gemini Award-winner Jennifer Hill (The Backyardigans), and directed by Emmy-nominated Todd Grimes (Back at the Barnyard).
So, it’s a comedic Star Wars (although, some would say the franchise was already comedic enough – especially the 3 prequels) made for TV. Doesn’t matter to me; I’ll pass. I wish Lucas would just kill Star Wars, once and for all. Put that shit to bed!

The "Star Wars" universe will soon be played for laughs -- intentional ones.
Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, who have done two "Star Wars" parodies for their Adult Swim series "Robot Chicken," are teaming up with Lucasfilm Animation to produce an animated comedy series set in the world of Wookiees, Jedis and droids. Brendan Hay ("The Daily Show," "The Mighty B!") is writing the script, and Jennifer Hill is producing with Green and Senreich. Todd Grimes ("Back at the Barnyard") is set to direct.
The show will take a decidedly more low-stakes approach to the "Star Wars" world. Action will most likely take place away from the stories fans already know backward and forward.
"It's crazy to think that there aren't normal, mundane everyday problems in a world so well-defined," Green says. "What do these characters do when they're not overthrowing empires?"
The show doesn't have a network home yet,...

Lucasfilm is developing a new, untitled animated Star Wars series intended as a comedic take on the characters from the massively successful sci-fi franchise.
Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, who have satirized Star Wars on their Adult Swim series “Robot Chicken” will have “creative involvement” in the animated show, along with “Daily Show” writer Brendan Hay. The animated comedy isn’t officially set up anywhere yet, but it’s expected to go to the Cartoon Network where Lucasfilm’s other animated series, “The Clone Wars,” is starting its third season this October.
Jennifer Hill (”The Backyardigans”) will produce and Todd Grimes (”Back at the Barnyard”) is signed to direct.
In quotes to the Hollywood Reporter, Green and Senreich said they hoped to “pull back the curtain on some of those behind-the-scenes shenanigans” and take a look at the “mundane, everyday problems” of the iconic characters. To the NY Times, Green...

Regardless of your feelings about Star Wars, and the recent Clone Wars animated series, the appetite for all things Force-related remains healthy…just the way George Lucas likes it (unless, of course, we're talking about 1978's Star Wars Holiday Special; most of us tossed our giblets after watching that shocker).
