Fox Searchlight has optioned Carter Blanchard's spec Near Death, with Aaron Kaplan and Sean Perrone attached to produce.
The story is described as a psychological sci-fi thriller set in the world of near-death experiences.
Claudia Lewis and Jeremy Steckler are overseeing the project for Searchlight.
Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment, which produced You, Me and Dupree, has several projects in development, including the supernatural thriller Knowing at Columbia Pictures and New Line Cinema's horror film Dead Asleep, which Blanchard penned.
Blanchard's writing credits also include Smoke for the Mayhem Project and the Immortals at Universal Pictures.
He is repped by UTA and attorney Peter Grossman.

Revolution Studios has jumped to Mr. Id, picking up the script from writing team Chris Pappas and Mike Bernier for mid-six figures. Id centers on a bachelor who meets the woman of his dreams only to see his male libido come to life and fight to keep him single. Zen Gesner and Rob Moran will produce, with Kris Meyer executive producing. Revolution Studios' Todd Garner brought the project in and will oversee along with Scott Bernstein. Pappas and Bernier, friends since their childhood days growing up outside of Boston, are repped by New York-based Nick Yellen, manager Darryl Taja at Catch 23 Entertainment and attorneys Peter Grossman at Lichter, Nichols, Grossman, Adler and Goodman and Cindy Gesner.
Bill Mechanic's Pandemonium Films has picked up the comedy spec Zillion from first-time scribe Dwayne Alexander Smith. Zillion revolves around a dashing billionaire supersleuth named Matthew Zillion who teams up with a no-nonsense female detective in New York to crush an international drug ring. Mechanic will produce with Pandemonium's Ashley Kramer and production/management company Circle of Confusion's Lawrence Mattis. "Dwayne has a very funny and original voice, and we love the character he created in Matthew Zillion," Kramer said. "We are very excited by the potential of this movie on its own and as a possible franchise." A native of New York, Smith worked as a production assistant and locations assistant before getting into screenwriting. He is repped by Circle of Confusion and Peter Grossman of Lichter Grossman Nichols Adler. This is the latest project for Pandemonium, which is scheduled to start production on several projects next year, including the John Woo-directed epic The Divide (aka Men of Destiny) and comedy The Wrong Nine Year Old. Circle of Confusion has set up Fate of the Blade at the Walt Disney Co. and Bounty at Universal Pictures.
