If you grew up in the nineties, you undoubtedly grew up a massive fan of The Sandlot. A coming-of-age story centering around a group of baseball-loving kids who hang out every day in a Sandlot, the movie didn’t make much of a peep in theatres back in 1993. However, the box office didn’t tell the whole story, with the movie becoming a cult film on VHS, cable and later DVD, with writer-director David Mickey Evans eventually returning to make a Dtv spin-off, The Sandlot 2, while a prequel is still in development.
But what happened to all of the kids in The Sandlot? Unlike a movie like Stand by Me, there were no megastars like River Phoenix to emerge, but the cast still fared well in the years to come. Many have gone on to everyday lives, while others continue to work (successfully) in showbiz almost 30 years later. In this...

Sandra Bullock plays a newly released Washington State ex-con trying to pick up where she left off 20 years earlier in “The Unforgivable” — no easy task, particularly since her character remains branded a cop-killer pariah. Working in English, German director Nora Fingscheidt’s second narrative feature (following Berlin prize-winner “System Crasher”) is adapted from a 2009 miniseries by esteemed U.K. TV scribe Sally Wainwright. The story translates well enough in cultural terms, though its density of plot elements ends up feeling more contrived in this compressed feature format.
Nevertheless, the producer-star’s first vehicle since “Bird Box” in 2018 is a sturdy drama-cum-thriller that should prove another Netflix hit, albeit one unlikely to reproduce that film’s flukish cultural-cachet buzz. It opens in limited U.S. theaters the day before Thanksgiving, then launches worldwide on the streamer Dec. 10.

The real Ham Porter has another adorable Smalls in his life. Patrick Renna, who portrayed the wisecracking backyard baseball player in the 1993 movie The Sandlot, took to Instagram on June 2 to share a video of himself and his young son, Flynn, who he nicknamed "Smalls" just like Tom Guiry's character in the film. "So Smalls, a.k.a my 4-year-old son Flynn, got his first black eye playing baseball, and I knew exactly what to do," he explained to the camera, before slapping a raw steak on his laughing son's eye. "If you know, you know." As fans of The Sandlot will recall, steak is the ice pack of choice for Smalls' parents after he...

Disney+ is priming The Sandlot for its streaming service, with the 1993 movie’s original director and co-writer David Mickey Evans attached to write and executive produce.
Deadline hears the series is in early development. The Sandlot is the second 20th Century Fox-related IP announced today to be developed for Disney’s streaming service. Earlier today, a Love, Simon TV series based on Greg Berlanti’s movie from last year was announced for Disney+ with This Is Us executive producers/co-showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who wrote the movie, writing/executive producing via their overall deal at 20th Century Fox TV.
The Sandlot series will be set in 1984, when the original cast are adults and they all have children of their own. The streaming series will be separate from the The Sandlot prequel film which Evans is writing with Austin Reynolds, which is to take place in the 1950s.

Disney+ is developing a TV series based on “The Sandlot,” Variety has learned.
David Mickey Evans, the co-writer and director of the 1993 film, is attached to write and executive produce the series. It is said to take in 1984 and would focus on the children of the original characters.
The first “Sandlot” film took place in the summer of 1962 and followed a group of friends who spent their days playing baseball while also dealing with a menacing dog that lived next to the titular sandlot that they referred to as The Beast. The film starred Tom Guiry, Mike Vitar, Karen Allen, Denis Leary, James Earl Jones, Patrick Renna, Chauncey Leopardi, Marty York, Brandon Quintin Adams, Grant Gelt, Shane Obedzinski, and Victor Dimattia. It grossed just over $33 million at the box office and has gone on to become a cult classic. Two direct-to-video sequels were produced in 2005 and 2007.

Are you ready to go back to The Sandlot? After 25 years, the original cast is returning at the direction of David Mickey Evans for a TV series. Evans wrote and directed the first two Sandlot movies, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, he's ready to bring the boys together for at least two seasons on an unnamed streaming service.
"I already got all the original cast members back," Evans said on The Rain Delay podcast, although he did not name the exact actors participating. "It takes place in 1984, when they're all like 33 years old and they all have children of their own, and that's all I can tell you."
This will be a jump forward from the original film, which was set in San Fernando Valley in 1962. If it's true that all the original cast members are returning, we can look forward to appearances from Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry), Hamilton...

Batter up folks, we're heading back to the sandlot! 20th Century Fox is currently at work on a prequel to the classic 1993 film The Sandlot. The original writer and director, David Mickey Evans, is coming back to cowrite the script with newcomer Austin Reynolds. Deadline first broke the news and reported that though the plot details are still unknown, the story is said to involve the legend of "The Beast," the giant English mastiff that terrifies all the kids in the neighborhood.
The cult classic recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special cast reunion and a two-day return to theaters. The heartwarming comedy is set in 1962 and tells the story of Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) who moves to a new neighborhood and is taken under the wing of local baseball superstar Benny Rodriguez (Mike Vitar). Since the people at Fox are bored waiting on the deal with Disney to finish, they have decided to look at giving us a Prequel to one of the most beloved basball films of all time.
It never fails. Just when you think Hollywood has already spit out the dumbbest possible ideas, they go ahead and come up with something even worse. This time, since they have nothing better to do, Fox has decided what the world needs is a prequel to The Sandlot. How is that even possible?!
The Sandlot is a classic film about 9 kids that came together one summer to defeat the beast, to save a baseball signed by The Sultan of Swat himself. The movie itself is a prequel, to children's summers all over America! What is there we need to know about these kids before that fateful summer. Until this point in their lives all there was,...

This is truly killing me, Smalls. When The Sandlot actors Patrick Renna and Tom Guiry had an encounter with a supposed fan on the streets, things took a questionable yet hilarious turn and an iconic photo was born. Here's what went down: Patrick and Tom (aka Hamilton "Ham" Porter and Scotty Smalls from The Sandlot) were walking down the street in the East Village neighborhood of New York City when they spotted a young man wearing a t-shirt that honored their breakout coming-of-age flick. The shirt featured Ham sporting his signature orange-and-white striped shirt and holding a baseball bat while pointing to the outfield, and included his most quoted line, "You're killing me, Smalls!"
When Patrick complimented the guy's shirt, likely assuming he was aware of its origin and the fact that it was his face plastered across his chest, the light bulb simply didn't go off in the man's head.

A dozen new specialty titles packed theaters this weekend. Sony Classics’ The Seagull and Roadside Attractions/30West’s Beast edged out the competition, grossing $80,607 in six locations and $52,078 in four theaters respectively.
The big screen version of Russian dramatist Anton Checkhov’s The Seagull opened in six New York and Los Angeles locations Friday, scoring the best per theater average of the specialty newcomers. Directed by Michael Mayer and starring Annette Bening, Saoirse Ronan, Corey Stoll and Elisabeth Moss, the feature grossed $80,607, averaging $13,434. Spc picked up the title in 2017, but held off releasing while it opened Bening starrer Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool. The producers showed an early version of The Seagull to Spc co-president Michael Barker, who gave notes.
“We addressed those notes in the final edit,” said producer Leslie Urdang in a conversation earlier this week about the film. “We give real kudos to him for helping us.

"We're going to start practicing waking up like normal people." Oscilloscope Labs has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled Sollers Point, the latest film from indie director Matthew Porterfield. The film stars McCaul Lombardi as a 24-year-old kid fresh from prison, now living with his father under house arrest in Baltimore, Maryland. He's struggling to find his place again and trying to stay away from old habits that will get him into new trouble. The cast includes Zazie Beetz, Tom Guiry, Everleigh Brenner, and Jim Belushi as his father Carol. This looks like a damn fine film, with a great lead performance from this newcomer - those eyes, McCaul! And the way this trailer opens is fantastic - it's such a powerful, convincing scene to start with right away. This is very much worth a watch. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Matthew Porterfield's Sollers Point,...

At the end of “The Sandlot,” the narrator explains how each of the kids ended up as each one fades from the screen. Some moved away, Benny the Jet made it to the big leagues, and Squints married Wendy Peffercorn. Earlier, TheWrap explored why some movies will be remembered but “The Sandlot” will never die. But 25 years later, we’ll explore where the film’s actors actually ended up.
Tom Guiry – Scotty Smalls
After making his film debut with “The Sandlot,” Tom Guiry continued to pursue acting and landed roles in “Mystic River,” “The Revenant” and “Black Hawk Down.” He most recently starred in “Wonder Wheel” and “Sollers Point.”
Mike Vitar – Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez
Mike Vitar continued his reputation as a sporty, teen heartthrob by appearing in both “Mighty Ducks” sequels “D2” and “D3.” His last acting role was in 1997 for a show called “Chicago Hope,” at which point he retired and became a firefighter. But in 2015, Vitar was charged with assault and reached a plea deal to avoid time behind bars in 2017.
Chauncey Leopardi – Squints
Leopardi spoke with TheWrap and says he’s keeping busy with a family and some businesses, as well as appearing at events for “The Sandlot” whenever he can. As an actor he’s also starred in “Freaks and Geeks,” “Gilmore Girls” and most recently “Coldwater” in 2013.
Patrick Renna – Ham
Originally from Boston, Patrick Renna still acts. Outside of “The Sandlot,” he had a memorable leading role in “The Big Green” while still young. More recently, he starred in episodes of “Boston Legal,” “Judging Amy” and 2016’s “Fear, Inc.”
Marty York – Yeah-Yeah
In addition to seriously bulking up, Marty York appeared in episodes of “Boy Meets World” and “The Eric Andre Show.”
Brandon Quintin Adams – Kenny DeNunez
Brandon Quintin Adams, also just Brandon Adams, had small roles in other ’90s hits “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Sister-Sister” and “Moesha.” He also did a voice for “Kingdom Hearts 2” and has recorded music as a rapper under the name B. Lee.
Grant Gelt – Bertram Grover Weeks
Grant Gelt had a few acting roles after “The Sandlot,” including “Boy Meets World” and “Hey Arnold!,” but he now works as a music manager.
Victor Dimattia – Timmy Timmons
Victor Dimattia went on two direct two short films and appeared in the 2018 indie “Get Married Or Die.”
Shane Obedzinski – Tommy “Repeat” Timmons
Unlike his onscreen counterpart, Shane Obedzinski didn’t directly follow in the footsteps of his onscreen brother. After leaving acting, he opened a pizza shop in Florida, but was glad to join in for the 20th anniversary festivities.
Marley Shelton – Wendy Peffercorn
Marley Shelton, who played the lifeguard all the boys are gaga over in “The Sandlot” Wendy Peffercorn, has starred in “Sin City,” “Planet Terror,” “Never Been Kissed,” “Death Proof,” “Scream 4” and more. She currently stars on the series “Rise” and will next be seen in Dwayne Johnson’s “Rampage.”
Denis Leary – Bill, Scott’s Stepdad
Taking a role as a fairly straight-laced, if imposing stepdad was a departure for the firebrand comedian back in 1993, but he would eventually move into far more dramatic roles on “Rescue Me” and more. And thankfully, he’s still a fan of “The Sandlot.”
Karen Allen – Scott’s Mom
Following “The Sandlot,” Karen Allen would reprise her more famous role as Marion in “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.” She most recently starred in “Year by the Sea” in 2016.
James Earl Jones – Mr. Mertle
It’s like he never really left!

Count the Milwaukee Brewers among those who are fans of The Sandlot.
Several of the Major League Baseball team's players re-created a memorable scene from the baseball-themed movie to celebrate its 25th anniversary (the movie first hit theaters on April 1, 1993).
The team's official Twitter account tweeted out the video with this message: "There's heroes and there's legends. Heroes get remembered but legends never die." That, of course, is a quote from the film, delivered by Babe Ruth (Art Lafleur) to young Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) in a dream.
Watch the Brewers' version, and the original, below.

Stars: Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, Don Johnson, Marc Blucas, Tom Guiry, Udo Kier, Rob Morgan, Geno Segers, Fred Melamed | Written and Directed by S. Craig Zahler
The second feature from Bone Tomahawk writer/director S. Craig Zahler, stylishly executed, ultra-violent prison flick Brawl in Cell Block 99 features a revelatory performance from Vince Vaughn that will make you see the actor in a whole new light.
Vaughn plays Bradley Thomas, a scary-looking recovering alcoholic with a shaved head and a big old crucifix tattooed onto the back of it. When Bradley winds up in prison after a spot of drug-running goes south, he’s visited by a sleazy henchman (Udo Kier) and given an ultimatum: he has to get himself transferred to a nearby maximum security prison and murder an inmate there or horrible things will happen to his kidnapped wife (Jennifer Carpenter) and unborn child.

When we meet Bradley Thomas (Vince Vaughn) in Brawl in Cell Block 99, things could not be worse for our protagonist. A former boxer who has struggled to turn his life around by making an honest living has just lost his job due to the economy, and as he makes his way home early to lick his wounds, he discovers that his wife, Lauren (Jennifer Carpenter), has been having an affair. Not content with the direction his life is headed, Bradley decides to go back to being a drug runner for his dealer pal, Gil (Marc Blucas), but things go south after a pick-up goes badly, and Mr. Thomas finds himself being incarcerated for his crimes after he refuses to snitch on his boss.
All this seems like a rather run-of-the-mill set-up for a grungy revenge-fueled actioner, but what follows in Cb 99 is anything but predictable, as writer/director S. Craig Zahler...

"I do things direct, and I have a system." Rlj Entertainment has unveiled a teaser trailer for the highly anticipated brutal crime drama Brawl in Cell Block 99, from filmmaker S. Craig Zahler, director of Bone Tomahawk. This is premiering at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals starting this week, and we expect to hear plenty of good buzz when the first reviews hit. Vince Vaughn takes on the gritty, very serious role as a former boxer-turned-drug runner who lands in a prison battleground after a deal gets deadly. The full cast includes Jennifer Carpenter, Don Johnson, Tom Guiry, Marc Blucas, Udo Kier, Rob Morgan, Geno Segers, and Fred Melamed. This teaser doesn't reveal too much of what happens in prison, but it does introduce us to Vaughn's character. I'm totally down for this - I'll be watching in Venice soon. Bring it. For people of a certain age or generation, The Sandlot is one of the finest baseball movies ever made (yes, we’ve seen The Natural). The film unfolds over one glorious summer in the suburbs, where a bookish kid (Tom Guiry) befriends a bunch of noisy, baseball-loving boys. There are some cool adults involved, including James Earl Jones, Karen Allen, and Denis Leary, but the movie is mostly about the boys’ friendship, which is solidified when they plot to retrieve a Babe Ruth-signed baseball from their scary neighbor’s yard. It’s super rewatchable and quotable—just stop and think about how often you utter “You’re killin’ me, Smalls” when you’re exasperated—but writer-director David M. Evans is stepping up to the plate with a new feature.

Last week, EW published The 55 Essential Movies Kids Must Experience (Before Turning 13). Predictably, given that we published a post on the Internet whose headline contained a concrete number and the word “essential,” we got some impassioned feedback from readers—many of whom were eager to suggest additional great movies kids should see that we’d left out.
As we noted last week, “This isn’t a list of the 55 ‘best’ kids movies, nor a compendium of hidden gems. Rather, it’s a survival-guide syllabus of films that we all need to know to be able to speak the same pop-cultural language.

Sandlot actor Tom Guiry, who played Scotty Smalls in the 1993 classic, is making headlines this week -- and not because of the movie's recent 20th anniversary reunion. Guiry, 31, was arrested at an airport in Houston, Tex., over the weekend after he allegedly head-butted a police officer, TMZ reports. Law-enforcement sources told the site that Guiry was at Bush Intercontinental Airport when a United Airlines employee deemed him too drunk to board his plane. A cop was called to the scene to help deal with the [...]...

For fans of The Sandlot, it was a bit of a bummer to hear that one of the stars from the popular 1993 baseball movie, Tom Guiry, had been arrested for head-butting a cop. But that's just what went down last weekend when the Houston Police Department was contacted by United Airlines at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport about a passenger that appeared to be too drunk to fly. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the 31-year-old actor had indeed had one too many. Guiry began to threaten the officers and was placed under arrest, during which time he head-butted a cop in the face and was subsequently charged with felony assault of a public servant. Ah, but for every Tom Guiry, there's a...

Say it with us now: "You're killing me, Smalls!"
Thomas Guiry, who played Scotty Smalls in the iconic baseball movie "The Sandlot," was arrested on Saturday (Aug. 3) after head-butting a police officer at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, TMZ reports.
Apparently, a United Airlines employee deduced that Guiry was too intoxicated to fly and contacted an airport cop, who approached the actor and provided him with two options: A public intoxication arrest or the drunk tank.
According to the website's law enforcement sources, Guiry then become belligerent and verbally abusive, making threats against the officer. After allegedly trying to kick the cop in the face, he landed the headbutt.
Guiry was subdued and handcuffed. He now faces a charge of felony assault on a police officer. The actor posted the $5,000 bail and was released.

Sandlot star Tom Guiry has been arrested for drunkenly head-butting a cop, E! News has confirmed. Houston Police Department spokesperson John Cannon tells E! that the Houston P.D. was contacted by United Airlines at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport about a passenger that appeared to be too drunk to continue to their destination. Officers arrived on scene to find Guiry was indeed drunk. The officer informed him that he could take a ride to Houston's newly established sobering center and not be charged with anything. Guiry became agitated and started making threats at the suggestion. A sergeant arrived on the scene and informed Guiry that if he continued to make threats, he would have more severe charges...

It’s the early 1960s and fifth-grader Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) has just moved into town with his folks (Karen Allen and Denis Leary). Kids call him a dork—he can’t even throw a baseball! But that changes when the leader of the neighborhood gang recruits him to play on the nearby sandlot field.

“You’re killin’ me, Smalls.” That phrase echoes in memories of many people who grew up in the 1990s. It is a quote from one of cinema history’s greatest sports comedies. That comedy of course is 1993’s The Sandlot now celebrating its 20th anniversary on dazzling Blu-ray. All the fun, laughter and excitement can be experienced again and again this time in crystal-clear high definition.
For those who aren’t familiar with the film, it takes place in a California suburb during the summer of 1962 and revolves around Scott “Scotty” Smalls. I clearly remember how the junkyard dog, dubbed by neighborhood pals in “The Sandlot” as “the Beast,” seemed as terrifying as any T-Rex.
Since I was seven years old in 1993, my parents wouldn’t allow me to be traumatized by Spielberg’s monster movie (I later saw it on VHS during a snow day, and was absolutely spellbound). But I did see “The Sandlot,” and prided myself on being able to handle the gleefully scary scenes where a group of boys attempts to snatch a prized baseball from the jaws of the Beast. Viewed 20 years later, I now see why it was so effortless...
