Hulu’s acclaimed “Only Murders in the Building,” currently vying for 11 Emmys, has gone all razzle dazzle in its third season. Make that rattle dazzle! Beleaguered Broadway director Oliver (Martin Short) was hoping for a comeback on the Great White Way with the mystery thriller “Death Rattle.” But when his leading man (Paul Rudd) is murdered, he decides to turn the straight play into a musical, “Death Rattle Dazzle!” And in the third episode, Meryl Streep’s nervous journeyman actress and Ashley Park’s leading lady performed the show-stopping ballad “Look for the Light” co-written by Sara Bareilles. One almost forgot the prime suspects in “Death Rattle Dazzle!” are the infant Pickwick triplets.
The 1959 multiple Tony winner “Redhead” also has a rather strange plot for a musical: a serial killer is stalking women in London in the 1880s during the time Jack the Ripper was terrorizing the city. Sounds like a real toe-tapper.

NBC is inviting the Grinch to share its holiday season: The network will air a two-hour production of Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical! on December 9. Staged at the Troubadour Theatre in London, the musical production will star Glee‘s Matthew Morrison as the small-hearted Grinch and Denis O’Hare as his hapless mutt Max played on Broadway during the holiday seasons of 2006 and 2007.
In the NBC version, the Cindy-Lou Who character will be played by young newcomer Amelia Minto. Producers have also assembled an ensemble of musical theater actors from London’s West End to complete the cast.
“Dr. Seuss is an indelible part of all of our lives and we’re thrilled to bring a stage production of The Grinch Musical! to our audience,” said Doug Vaughan, Executive Vice President, Special Programs, NBC Entertainment. “This is a perfect addition to our annual holiday program traditions and a telecast the entire family will enjoy.”
The staging is by director Max Webster, and Julia Knowles directs for television. Additional script material is by Simon Nye, with sets by designer Peter Bingemann.
Previous musicals staged in recent years by NBC The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, The Wiz, Hairspray and Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.
Though Morrison became a household name on Glee, he has an extensive stage background, including roles in Broadway’s Footloose, Hairspray, and The Light in the Piazza. More recently, Morrison starred as J.M. Barrie in the Broadway musical Finding Neverland. Additional TV credits include The Good Wife, Grey’s Anatomy and American Horror Story: 1984. Morrison is represented by Podwall Entertainment, ICM Partners and Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical is presented in association with Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Running Subway, produced by Penny Lane Entertainment Television and Simon Friend Entertainment. Of the holiday pop-up-store musicals on offer, one could do worse than Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, a remount of the slender mini-musical that appeared on Broadway six years ago, directed by Jack O’Brien and starring Patrick Page as he-who-will-not-be-wassailed. The show — which lovingly apes the 1966 Chuck Jones animated TV special wherever it can, and showcases the Albert Hague classic “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” — has been repotted in the appalling Theater at Madison Square Garden, a soul-smothering, actor-muting Chunnel of despair hewn from concrete and sadness by a clinically depressed designer of third-world mausoleums. (It's like being in a 1992 Chrysler LeBaron glove compartment on a Brobdingnagian scale.) Marvel then at Jeff McCarthy, who slips into four quarts of latex and eight bales of matted fur to play the title grump, that chartreuse Scrooge and scourge of Whoville — and still manages, from...

Broadway musical theatre writer who wrote the libretto for Fiddler on the Roof and the screenplay for the 1971 film
Joseph Stein, who has died aged 98, was the last of the great Broadway musical theatre writers coming out of New York revue and television comedy after the second world war. Most famously, he wrote the book, or libretto, for Fiddler on the Roof (1964) and Zorba (1968). "There are no limitations to the subject for a musical," Stein once said, "just as there are no limitations to the subject for a play or a novel. The only limitation that I can see is that it has to have an honesty about the relationship of people to each other."
He cast his net wide, shaping not only the Ukrainian shtetl stories of Sholom Aleichem into the tale of Tevye the milkman and his five daughters in Fiddler on the Roof, but also drawing, perhaps surprisingly,...

Janet Jackson has far from fond memories about her time on hit TV show "Fame" in the mid 1980s because she was dealing with drug issues away from the set. The "Nasty" singer played Cleo Hewitt in 25 episodes of the hit musical show but admits she "wasn't happy".
She tells Entertainment Weekly magazine, "My boyfriend at the time was having issues with substance abuse, so I was having to deal with that and then having to come to work. I was late most of the time."
Janet Jackson joined "Fame" in its fourth season from 1984 to 1985. She starred opposite Debbie Allen, Albert Hague, Carol Mayo Jenkins and Ann Nelson. "Fame" tells the story about the life of the students and faculty at the New York City High School for the Performing Arts.

The Blu-ray conversion process continued throughout the year and there’s something for everyone. As the hours dwindle towards Santa’s arrival, here’s a trio of family-friendly Blu-ray offerings that are perfect – as long as you don’t have these on standard DVD. Warner Home Video wisely released A Charlie Brown Christmas and Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas some weeks back, completing the hat trick with the Blu-ray debut of Horton Hears a Who!
These are basically the standard DVDs upgraded to Blu-ray so everything looks and sounds marvelous. All the standard DVD extras are still here so there’s little to compel you to upgrade, especially since the prices treat these like the full-length feature films when the reality is, these were thirty minute television specials.
None of the above robs the trio from their power to entertain. The Charlie Brown special, which has been collected in multiple DVD sets,...
