As the beginning of his IMDb bio states, “Every horror film buff will recognize the name Jacques Haitkin.” Haitkin was the cinematographer on one of the most popular horror movies ever made, the 1984 Wes Craven classic A Nightmare on Elm Street (watch it Here). And while Craven didn’t return to the helm for A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Haitkin did return to be the cinematographer on that sequel. Sadly, we have to share the news today that Jacques Haitkin is no longer with us. This news was broken on the Facebook account of filmmaker Tony Randel, who is best known for directing Hellbound: Hellraiser II and worked with Haitkin on Galaxy of Terror, Ticks, Fist of the North Star, Rattled, One Good Turn, and Assignment Berlin.
Randel posted, “I knew Jacques Haitkin practically my entire career. We met on a Roger Corman horror/sci-fi epic – Galaxy of Terror.

Special makeup supremo Robert Kurtzman directs this 1997 homage to 1980s horror, and while its gross-out effects are impressive, the plot, characters and script leave much to be desired.
Wishmaster opens in 12th century Persia, and a royal party in chaos: people are mutating, skinning themselves, turning inside out, that sort of thing. It seems the king has made a deal with a Djinn, a mythical demon who will grant three wishes. On the third wish, a portal will open and the Djinn (plural) will be unleashed and take over the world of men. Or something. Thankfully, this Djinn is banished thanks to an opal made of blood.

After a demanding evening spent bumping and grinding at The Harem Room, a weary young dancer packs up her gear and exits the club to a chorus of catcalls. She responds by whipping out a state-of-the-art shotgun and laying waste to not only to the would-be lotharios but a good section of Hollywood Boulevard. Well, March is definitely “going out like a lamb” (as the old saying goes) when it comes to horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases, as there are only several different titles coming home this Tuesday.
Universal Studios is releasing J.A. Bayona’s heartbreaking modern fable, A Monster Calls, to both Blu-ray and DVD this week, and if you're a cult film fan, then you have a few fun movies to look forward to adding to your home collections: Witchtrap, Venom, and the four-film collection for Wishmaster, a new addition to the Vestron Video Collector’s Series.
Other notable releases for March 28th include Mortuary Massacre, The Abduction of Jennifer Grayson, Park Chan-Wook's The Handmaiden (which finally gets the Blu-ray treatment), and for the little monster fans, Monster High: Electrified.

The films are an example of diminishing returns, but the collection is more than the franchise’s fans could have wished for.
There are rumors that Lionsgate’s fantastic Vestron Video line of remastered, supplement-filled Blu-rays celebrating horror films from the ’80s and ’90s may be closing up shop. It’s unconfirmed, and LG themselves have been mum on the subject, but it would be an unfortunate turn of events for genre fans if true. They’re only nine releases in, but already they’ve done tremendous work with fantastic new editions of fun classics like Chopping Mall, Waxwork, and The Gate.
Their most recent release, and possibly their last if the rumor proves true, is the four-film Wishmaster Collection. As someone who had never seen the first film and was utterly unaware that three sequels even existed this set offered a first-time watch across the board. So of course I binge-watched all four across a single...

It’s the most uncomfortable type of horror scene, but if done correctly, can pack a gut punch. The violation scene is the moment when the character’s vulnerability is betrayed and our empathy immerses us deeper into their dreadful ordeal. The young child possessed by an evil spirit. The unlucky bystander assaulted in a tunnel. The crazed woman submitting to a creature of non human origin. The violation scene can be emotional or it can be exploitative, but it’s almost always guaranteed to get us talking.

Even though it was one of the originators of German Expressionist film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is often regarded as the pinnacle for the movement. Two of the movement’s basic tenets were distorted lines and shapes and overly theatrical movements from the actors, and both are well on display in this creepy scene.

A Nightmare on Elm Street has a special place in my heart. It was not only the first horror film I had ever watched, but it was the first film in which I took notice of a film’s director and its stars. Prior to A Nightmare On Elm Street, perhaps the only director I was familiar with was George Lucas. A Nightmare On Elm street was my gateway into the world of cinema, and I owe Wes Craven for that. For those who dare dismiss it as trash, I give you 2060 words as to why you are so very, very wrong.

Wes Craven intended Nightmare to be an exploration of surreal horror as opposed to just another stalk-and-slash horror movie, and not only did Nightmare offer a wildly imaginative, inspired concept, but it was a solid commercial genre entry for the dating crowd. Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

Admittedly, there’s little new in this set for those of you who sprung for the previous Blu-ray editions of the first three films that were released over the last few years. Post-production has officially wrapped on the new psychological thriller, Visible Scars, starring Tom Sizemore, Jillian Murray (Never Back Down 2, The Graves) and Hannah Hall (Rob Zombie's Halloween).
Written and directed by Richard Turke, with cinematography by Jacques Haitkin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 1 & 2, Wishmaster), the film tells the story of Stacy Walker (Jillian Murray), a young woman who flees to her late uncle’s cabin to escape her abusive boyfriend, only to begin having gruesome visions and hearing voices from the surrounding forest.
Tom Sizemore plays Mike Gillis, a deranged husband who kidnapped baby twin sisters to appease his wife’s desire for kids 17 years earlier, raising them in his basement and killing anyone he deemed a threat. It is in the same forest where Stacy has come for safety that Gillis’ house burned to the ground with him and the children inside. When bodies begin turning up in the present day,...

Throughout November, Sos staffers will be discussing the movies that made them into film fanatics.
A Nightmare on Elm Street has a special place in my heart. It was not only the first horror film I had ever watched but it was the first film in which I took notice of a film’s director and its stars. Prior to A Nightmare On Elm Street, perhaps the only director I was familiar with was George Lucas – after all Return Of The Jedi was the first film I had seen on the big screen. The difference between the two, and the reason why I decided to write about Nightmare, is because unlike Star Wars, a film that was pushed upon me by my older brother, Nightmare was something that I took interest in on my own. Perhaps it was the brim hat Freddy wore, and his sharp claws, or perhaps it...

Chicago – I haven’t seen it yet but just watching the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in gorgeous HD has me pumped up for the Platinum Dunes remake about to be released. The world could use a little more Freddy Krueger (played by the excellent Jackie Earle Haley in the remake), one of the most memorable creations in the history of horror.
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
Until the new “A Nightmare on Elm Street” hits theaters on April 30th, pick up the wildly influential 1984 Wes Craven film, available in HD for the first time. The month of April is the month of Freddy Krueger. At the end of the month the remake launches and mid week A Nightmare on Elm Street finally moves to Blu-ray (April 13th). The film in the digital format will have a slew of extras including a director's commentary, a crew commentary (with a dozen participants), three alternative endings, and three featurettes. The transfer has been described as excellent (Monsters) and those wanting to amp themselves up for the big screen release might want to sit down with the original in the best quality available. The original trailer for the film with a complete list of extras are below.
The synopsis for the original 1984 The Nightmare on Elm Street:
"On Elm Street, Nancy Thompson and a group of her friends including Tina Gray, Rod Lane and Glen Lantz are being tormented by a clawed killer in their dreams named Freddy Krueger.

The official Stateside Blu-ray release of A Nightmare on Elm Street is just a couple of short weeks away, and to celebrate this classic film's high definition debut, Warner Brothers has shared a couple of clips to get you guys in the spirit of things!
Synopsis:
“1, 2, Freddy’s coming for you.” And here he is, phantom fiend Freddy Krueger in all his razor-fingered infamy. Wes Craven (Scream movies) directs this trendsetting first in the slash-hit series. The premise is simple: Freddy (Robert Englund) homicidally haunts the sleep of Elm Street teens. The results are terrifying and mind-blowingly innovative. There’s another film debut too: Johnny Depp. He plays the ready steady of the hottie mcsmarty (Heather Langenkamp) who figures a clever way to flambé the fiend. But ever-say-die Freddy will be 3, 4 back for more ... even returning to the screen in a killer 2010 remake of this diabolical original. Sweet dreams!
