Welcome to the island of St Jory, population: one less than there used to be.
A year ago, St Jory teenager Cai Prideaux went missing and the police did very little about it. Now there’s a new sheriff in town in Sgt Grace Narayan (Anjli Mohindra), an outsider with an unbending belief in the letter of the law that’s ruffling feathers among the locals. The islanders, you see, are used to running things their own way. The True Way.
That’s the Hot Fuzz-meets-The Wicker Man premise for The Red King, an original six-part series written by Being Human creator Toby Whithouse and directed by Daniel O’Hara and Lisa Clarke. It’s a crime drama/folk horror mash-up that uses murder mystery trappings to tell a story about religion, insularity and national identity.
St Jory is your typical folk horror island in that there’s nothing typical about it.

Sometimes we at the Pilot TV podcast are the very embodiment of calm, dignified professionalism. This is not one of those times. An early recording prompts unfettered anarchy this week as the team go full Joanna Page, cover a postbag slot we’ve done before and only half review one of the shows (we had our reasons).
But all of that’s okay, because Star Trek: Discovery’s Sonequa Martin-Green joins us on the show to talk about her final voyage, plus we watch Kate Winslet become a dictator, Jill Halfpenny turn into the lodger from hell and (almost) see a show about a stalker. Absolute chaos.
Listen to the episode on your podcast app of choice or the player above. And if you want to subscribe to Pilot TV+, find all the details here.

Don’t despair about the end of another non-existent British summer – UK TV always gets good when the weather turns, as the nights draw in and we all retreat indoors, finally getting sick of rainy barbecues and being chased by wasps in pub gardens.
This year is no different, so you can expect your 2023 autumn TV watchlist to include some compelling original dramas, from true crime shows covering some of the UK’s most shocking cases to enthralling depictions of real-life events, from the arrival of the Windrush generation to the Covid-19 pandemic.

No Spaced. No The League of Gentlemen. No Smack the Pony or Goodness Gracious Me or The Royle Family or Brass Eye, or Red Dwarf or Father Ted or anything that belongs to the last century (side note: the late 90s were an incredible time for UK comedy). These are the 40 finest British comedy TV shows that have arrived since the year 2000, as nominated by our writers. Add in your favourites below, and it’s a party.
What’s cheering about this lot, apart from the fact that as comedies, they should all technically cheer us up, is how different they are. There’s the surreal chaos of Year of the Rabbit, and the sweet warmth of Lovesick, the Pythonesque bonkersness of Yonderland, the satirical might of The Thick of It and much more. Something for everyone, you might say.
And to make sure there was enough space to include a wide enough selection,...

“Byker Grove,” the iconic British teen drama that launched dozens of entertainment careers – as well as unleashed a strangely catchy theme tune on the world – is back.
Seventeen years after the last episode aired on the BBC, “Byker Grove” is returning with two of its former stars – Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, collectively known as Ant and Dec – at the helm. “The Kardashians” producers Fulwell 73 will co-produce alongside McPartlin and Donnelly’s production company Mitre Studios (“Saturday Night Takeaway”).
Originally launching in 1989, “Byker Grove” was set in a Newcastle youthclub and did not shy away from hard-hitting storylines. Among the well-known faces who came up through its ranks were “The Gentleman’s” Charlie Hunnam, former MTV host Donna Air, Jill Halfpenny (“Coronation Street”) and McPartlin and Declan, who played Pj and Duncan. The duo launched a short-lived career in pop music under their characters’ names, Pj and Duncan, before a successful pivot to TV presenting.

Getting caught up in a deadly kidnapping, being torn away from your loved ones and forced into witness protection, tracking down a serial killer of vulnerable young girls… none of the above exactly scream ‘Lol’, and yet they’ve all become the subject of British crime comedy-dramas in recent years. The “you’ve got to laugh” mentality is clearly in our national DNA, no matter how bleak the circumstances.
Attracting huge names in comedy, from Matt Berry, Stephen Merchant, James Corden and Joanna Scanlan, to the brilliant Gbemisola Ikumelo, Emer Kenny, Kerry Howard, and created by the writers behind People Just Do Nothing, Peep Show, Succession and more, here are some of the best darkly funny crime comedy series of recent years.

For years, Strictly Come Dancing has been providing TV audiences with Saturday night entertainment and some truly unforgettable performances.
First airing in 2004 with Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly as hosts, Strictly seemed like a celebrity reality TV show like any other.
But, the show soon became a huge national and international hit, with everyone from politicians to YouTubers taking on the challenge of learning to ballroom dance.
Along the way, there have been some performances you just can’t forget regardless of whether they’re worthy of a perfect 40 or burnt onto your brain for all the wrong reasons.
From the very best to the very, very worst, here are 12 of Strictly’s most memorable moments.
Ed Balls does “Gangnam Style”
When Ed Balls of “tweeting his own name” fame was announced as a contestant, it was assumed that he would be a joke act eliminated in one of the first weeks.

The success of “Fleabag” loosed a glut of shows about young women tottering – heels broken, mascara smeared – in the vague direction of adult responsibility. Few have been as purely enjoyable as “Everything I Know About Love,” Dolly Alderton’s adaptation of her own memoir, which debuts on Peacock this week after winning plaudits on the BBC in midsummer.
With its photogenic cast, pyjama-party vibe and commitment to steering its characters towards better things, this Working Title-produced, London-set miniseries should provide superior comfort TV for anyone constitutionally unable to face Nathan Fielder’s postmodern provocations or the carnage of a “Game of Thrones” prequel. It’ll be only more comforting the more years you have on the show’s fresh-faced principals.
Alderton’s onscreen surrogate is Maggie Marshall (Emma Appleton), encountered just before the 2012 Olympics as a flighty 24-year-old blogger with a thrusting new beau in porkpie hat-sporting, multiple red flag-raising...

Warning: contains spoilers for 4-episode series The Holiday.
Despite spending the rest of their time driving SUVs, sending their kids to private school and buying-to-let, there’s a tranche of the population who, for two weeks a year, give socialism a whirl. For a fortnight in a rented Mediterranean villa, they and their pals share the means of production, distribution and exchange – chiefly in the area of making lamb tagines – and attempt to live communally. It rarely goes smoothly. There’s tension over the wine-to-food ratio in the shared shopping budget. One of the mums keeps letting her sarong fall off in front of the youngest dad. By the time they’re all sunburned and somebody commits the war crime of letting somebody else’s child have a Robinsons Fruit Shoot, everyone’s pining for home.
Four-part UK thriller The Holiday takes that premise and adds murder. Disappointingly, what it...

What do you do when the plug is pulled permanently on your TV show, with just a handful of episodes to go? How do you wrap up over a decade of storylines and characters in twenty-five minutes? How do you mark the end of an era? That was the dilemma facing the makers of Byker Grove, the occasionally-gritty teen drama about a Tyneside youth club when it was finally axed in 2006. Stars: Andy Nyman, Martin Freeman, Paul Whitehouse, Alex Lawther, Leonard Byrne, Nicholas Burns, Jill Halfpenny | Written and Directed by Andy Nyman, Jeremy Dyson
Adapted from their own supernatural stage play, Ghost Stories is a lovingly crafted horror anthology from writing / directing duo Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson. Inspired by British portmanteau horror films like Dead of Night (1945) and Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965), Nyman and Dyson have conjured up a creepy collection of terrifying tales that’s worthy of instant classic status.
Nyman plays Professor Philip Goodman, a TV investigator specialising in debunking the supernatural and exposing hoaxes. An early indication of both Goodman’s character and the nature of his work occurs early on, when he triumphantly confronts a fraudulent psychic just as he’s bringing comfort to a grieving mother who lost her son to leukemia – the confused and anguished expression on her face immediately gives the audience pause.

If catching him as Everett Ross in Marvel’s Black Panther wasn’t enough for fans of the Sherlock and Hobbit actor, Martin Freeman is now set to scare us out of our wits as well in the upcoming British horror anthology movie, Ghost Stories.
Co-written, co-directed by and co-starring Andy Nyman, the film will combine three tales of terror via a wraparound narrative, featuring Nyman as a skeptic psychologist investigating ghost sightings. From there, we imagine his character will have his disbelief tested when he comes face to face with the supernatural.
Martin Freeman nabs top billing, of course, and is set to play a man named Mike Priddle, while the rest of the cast is filled out with comedian Paul Whitehouse, Alex Lawther (The Imitation Game) and Jill Halfpenny. Unfortunately, the fan favorite actor doesn’t show up in this new clip (up above), but rest assured, he...

An evident labour of love for first-time writer-director Dan Cadan, this cheerful British comedy attempts to fuse a nostalgic love of Saturday teatime TV wrestling with a band-of-plucky-underdogs plot that’s straight out of The Full Monty. The result leaves a lot to be desired, but there’s no denying that the film’s heart is in the right place.
The film begins with a wistful flashback to the 1980s, when the nation was glued to British wrestling on ITV’s World of Sport, every Saturday tea-time and young Mark Bolton (Stephen Graham) grew up idolising his wrestler father, Trevor “Bulldog” Bolton (I, Daniel Blake’s Dave Johns) and his wrestling troupe, The Panthers. Cut to the present day, where Mark still harbours...

"The Panthers... I'm a huge fan of horror anthology films and this new one from the UK called Ghost Stories looks great! The creepy film in based on the long-running British horror stage show created by English magician Andy Nyman. The film centers around a psychologist and arch-skeptic named Professor Phillip Goodman. His rationality is tested when he "stumbles across a long-lost file containing details of three terrifying hauntings. He then embarks on a mission to find rational explanations for the ghostly happenings."
The movie stars Andy Nyman as Goodman, and he's joined by a solid supporting that includes Martin Freeman, Alex Lawther, Jill Halfpenny, Paul Whitehouse, Nicholas Burns, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Hill, Derren Brown, and Ryan Oliva.
This movie looks like it'll be a fun and scary flick and I'm looking forward to checking it out! Ghost Stories will be released something this year, but no specific date is given. Watch...

"You don't have to have your life ruled by superstitious fear." A brand new, full-lenth UK trailer has arrived for the new anthology supernatural horror film titled Ghost Stories. We initially posted three teasers for this last year after the film premiered at the London Film Festival in the fall. Based on the long-running British horror stage show created by English magician Andy Nyman, this is about a psychologist and arch-skeptic named Professor Phillip Goodman who investigates three terrifying hauntings. Andy Nyman plays Goodman, and the rest of the ensemble cast includes Martin Freeman, Alex Lawther, Jill Halfpenny, Paul Whitehouse, Nicholas Burns, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Hill, Derren Brown, and Ryan Oliva. This looks thrilling, something different in the ghost subgenre and I'm curious to check it out. Here's the full-length official UK trailer for Jeremy Dyson & Andy Nyman's Ghost Stories, from YouTube: You can still watch the first three...

Three teaser trailers have been released for a new horror movie called Ghost Stories. The movie is based on the long-running British stage show created by Andy Nyman, an English magician, and this is the synopsis:
Ghost Stories stars Andy Nyman as Professor Phillip Goodman, a psychologist and arch-skeptic, who has his rationality tested when he stumbles across a long-lost file containing details of three terrifying hauntings. He then embarks on a mission to find rational explanations for the ghostly happenings.
Nyman is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Martin Freeman, Alex Lawther, Jill Halfpenny, Paul Whitehouse, Nicholas Burns, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Hill, Derren Brown, and Ryan Oliva.
The teasers make it feel like it might be an anthology film, but it also appears that there may be a connection between the three stories.
You can watch the first three teaser trailers for the film below. The movie already...

"You don't believe, do ya?" IFC has unveiled three teaser trailers for a new ghost horror movie titled Ghost Stories, which already premiered at the London Film Festival earlier this month.
