William Wyler’s Dead End made its screen debut on Aug. 27, 1937. The film adaptation of Sidney Kingsley’s Broadway play starred Sylvia Sidney and Joel McCrea, and featured Humphrey Bogart in third billing. But the movie was stolen from them all by a gang of upstart juvenile delinquents, who nicked audience attention like a fancy watch mugged off a clueless rich brat.
Billy Halop, Huntz Hall, Gabe Dell, Bobby Jordan, Bernard Punsly, and Leo Gorcey were the original teen menaces who terrorized theatergoers when the play opened on Oct. 28, 1935. Directed by the playwright, Dead End ran for 684 performances, and is still the longest-running play in the Belasco Theater’s history. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt saw it three times.
Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, Dead End isn’t the greatest gangster movie of all time. It followed the classic era of the genre; it was produced by Samuel Goldwyn for MGM studios,...

Lewis Milestone directed this poetic, optimistic ode to the American infantryman, a ‘lone patrol’ saga that emphasizes its soldiers’ hopes and fears. The lineup of fresh, eager acting talent is remarkable: Dana Andrews, Richard Conte, George Tyne, John Ireland, Lloyd Bridges, Sterling Holloway, Norman Lloyd, Herbert Rudley, Richard Benedict, Huntz Hall, James Cardwell, Steve Brodie. Voiceovers and ‘ballads’ give a six-mile beachhead incursion the tone of a spiritual rumination. A beautiful full film restoration brings the image back to prime quality. The controversial filmmakers and the unusual production circumstances are covered in Alan K. Rode’s commentary.

When Leo Gorcey and Huntz Hall grew too paunchy for their Dead End Kid personas they simply switched gears and became the Bowery Boys—older and far dumber versions of their former street-smart selves. Low-brow and low-budget, the Boys took a Stooges-like slapstick approach to their adventures and 1949’s Master Minds is one of their most polished efforts. It’s a horror comedy featuring a mad scientist bent on swapping Hall’s barely functional brain with a hulking monster played by Glenn Strange (who does a great Huntz Hall imitation).

Fifty-five years ago this summer, on August 4th, 1963, housewife Connie Smith won a talent contest in Columbus, Ohio, earning a performance spot on a local Grand Ole Opry concert where songwriter Bill Anderson took note of her and encouraged her to make a trip to Nashville when the two met again at a New Year’s Day concert in Canton, Ohio.
As 1964 unfolded for the young wife and mother, she garnered yet another invitation – this time a spot on the popular Ernest Tubb Midnite Jamboree, which followed the Grand Ole Opry on Wsm radio.

(See previous post: “Gay Pride Movie Series Comes to a Close: From Heterosexual Angst to Indonesian Coup.”) Ken Russell's Valentino (1977) is notable for starring ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev as silent era icon Rudolph Valentino, whose sexual orientation, despite countless gay rumors, seems to have been, according to the available evidence, heterosexual. (Valentino's supposed affair with fellow “Latin Lover” Ramon Novarro has no basis in reality.) The female cast is also impressive: Veteran Leslie Caron (Lili, Gigi) as stage and screen star Alla Nazimova, ex-The Mamas & the Papas singer Michelle Phillips as Valentino wife and Nazimova protégée Natacha Rambova, Felicity Kendal as screenwriter/producer June Mathis (The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse), and Carol Kane – lately of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame. Bob Fosse's Cabaret (1972) is notable as one of the greatest musicals ever made. As a 1930s Cabaret presenter – and the Spirit of Germany – Joel Grey was the year's Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner. Liza Minnelli...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was already a comedy legend before Veep – but it turns out she was just hitting her prime. The actress has spent five years on HBO's D.C. satire as foul-mouthed President Selina Meyer, who claws her way to the Oval Office just to lose it again. The 56-year-old started out on Saturday Night Live before reaching stardom as Elaine on Seinfeld, the most spongeworthy of sitcom heroines. In the new Veep season, she's as fearsome as ever, snarling political observations like, "This election is going down like Eleanor Roosevelt at Dinah Shore Weekend.

The Veep and Seinfeld star was accompanied by equally proud husband Brad Hall. In addition to the 6'5" sophomore forward, who inherited his height from his father, the couple also has a 23-year-old son Henry Hall, a singer-songwriter. Veterans Day movies on TCM: From 'The Sullivans' to 'Patton' (photo: George C. Scott in 'Patton') This evening, Turner Classic Movies is presenting five war or war-related films in celebration of Veterans Day. For those outside the United States, Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day, which takes place in late May. (Scroll down to check out TCM's Veterans Day movie schedule.) It's good to be aware that in the last century alone, the U.S. has been involved in more than a dozen armed conflicts, from World War I to the invasion of Iraq, not including direct or indirect military interventions in countries as disparate as Iran, Guatemala, and Chile. As to be expected in a society that reveres people in uniform, American war movies have almost invariably glorified American soldiers even in those rare instances when they have dared to criticize the military establishment.

People are killed every year by seemingly harmless and innocuous things. Alongside this, those things that are supposed to be massively dangerous, such as sharks, turn out to be less of a problem than we imagine. Sharks cause five deaths a year. Soda Machines cause 13 deaths a year. This means getting a can of coke is more dangerous than nature’s most feared killing machine.
According to the International Shark Attack File (Isaf), just 1,909 confirmed shark attacks have occurred around the world between 1580 and 2003! Of these, 737 happened in the United States, and 38 people died as a result. That said, what are your real odds of being attacked by a shark? One in 11.5 million, says the Isaf. Being killed by a shark? Zero in 264.1 million.
Some innocuous things that can kill you are really just a matter of luck. Probably no one reading this is going to die in...

A financial and critical flop, this notoriously inaccurate version of the rise and fall of silent screen star Rudolf Valentino is the one picture Ken Russell said he regretted making (“What idiot made this?”). He called the decision to make it his worst mistake and its costly failure impacted his career for years. Seems in retrospect that a 5 million dollar picture co-starring dancer Rudolf Nureyev (as Valentino) with former Bowery Boy Huntz Hall (as movie pioneer Jesse Lasky) would be headed for trouble, but sometimes that’s the way the tinseltown cookie crumbles.

While it's true DVD-r technology makes it possible for collectors to own a physical copy of movies that wouldn't otherwise warrant a full-scale release, it also allows the studios to sell any film hiding in the corner of a film vault. Singer, comic actor and stalwart of Coronation Street
Betty Driver, who has died aged 91, was a gutsy and durable comic actor who meant one thing to young audiences and quite another to those who could remember the second world war and the years immediately after it. To the youthful, she will be remembered as Betty Turpin (later Betty Williams), the barmaid, shoulder to cry on and wife of the policeman Cyril Turpin in Granada television's Coronation Street, whose cast she joined in 1969.
To a much older audience, she will also be remembered for her appearances in repertory theatres and in stage revues; as the child star who took over from the popular singer Gracie Fields on a stage tour, doing some of her best-known numbers; and as the principal singer for a year with the leading dance orchestra leader of the time, Henry Hall, on his BBC radio programme,...
