As a young child during WWII, Marek Halter and his family narrowly escaped from the Warsaw ghetto. Since then, the Paris–based activist has plied his trade as a storyteller, novelist, journalist, commentator, and promoter of interfaith dialogue and conflict resolution, establishing the International Committee for Peace in the Middle East and Sos Racisme. Halter’s latest book, The Jewish Odyssey: An Illustrated History (Flammarion; August 31), charts the influence of Judaism on the Diaspora over four millennia, from its origins in Mesopotamia to its role in the world today. Below, Halter remembers his fourth birthday in Nazi–occupied Warsaw and the gift that saved his life. Listen to the podcast after the jump.
