Adult Swim has always felt like a safe haven for the weirdos of the world, a network willing to let absurdist geniuses like Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim run wild and subvert classic cartoons for a new generation no matter how bizarre things would turn out. Plenty of shows have come and gone since the channel's launch in 2001, but for the last 20 years, there has remained a constant presence that captures the heart of what makes Adult Swim such a vital network for creativity — "The Venture Bros." So rarely do modern audiences get to experience a “cult classic” film or television show anymore. The internet has seen to that. Even independent films that 20-30 years ago would have to rely on word of mouth or for the local Blockbuster to run out of copies to create any kind of buzz now get thousands of people sharing their thoughts about it within online forums.
It is with no sense of irony that The Venture Bros. is perhaps one of the last cult classics. The animated series is one of the veterans of Cartoon Network’s original Adult Swim line of shows, and throughout the last two decades has clawed its way to survive seven seasons and stave off cancellation. That’s largely in part to its cult-like following. The show has been a refuge...

This Venture Bros. movie review contains no spoilers.
“It’s like a job trying to follow this nonsense.”
How does one say goodbye after 20 years? That’s the lofty task that The Venture Bros. faces with this concluding movie-length finale, Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart, and it does so with nerdy, passionate grace. The Venture Bros. has produced seven seasons, but it made its Adult Swim premiere back in 2003 when the then-fledgling network only had five original programs to its name and superhero parodies were niche, not the new normal. Now, it celebrates its swan song during a time when most people will view this series finale feature film on Max, sandwiched between endless superhero content. The animation industry and television as a whole have greatly transformed since The Venture Bros.’s debut, yet Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart proves that The Venture Bros.

We have an exclusive look at one of the special features on The Venture Bros. season 7 DVD and Blu-ray!
The Venture Bros. properly understands its audience and tries to reward them as much as possible. Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick’s animated series has been a staple on Adult Swim for over a decade, but a lengthy production cycle turns each new season into an event to get excited over. With the upcoming release of The Venture Bros. Season 7 on Blu-Ray and DVD, we talk the show's past and future with its creators.
The Venture Bros. may dress itself up as a silly cartoon about costumed heroes, villains, super scientists, and all sorts of ridiculous magic, but over the course of its seven seasons it’s grown into one of the most mature animated programs on television.
The series’ sense of storytelling and its cast of characters has grown larger and more ambitious with each new season, but The Venture Bros.’ latest season is arguably its best yet. It finds a way to pay respect to many of the show’s longest running mysteries, while also re-inventing the show and its dynamics in new and exciting ways. The episodes of “The Venture Bros.” that always seem the most ridiculous are the ones that could probably be called the most meaningful.
Take “The Bellicose Proxy,” in which the show once again dives deep into the idea of a highly regulated bureaucracy of secret agents, supervillains, mitigated collateral damage and a whole lot of rules — and actually manages to offer up a vision of a world working in a way you can’t help but wish the real world did.
The episode finds Augustus St. Cloud (Christopher McCulloch) about to begin officially “arching” his nemeses, Billy Quizboy (Doc Hammer) and the Pink Pilgrim Aka Pete White (McCulloch) — they’ve fought before, but now it’s sanctioned by the organizations that oversee superhero and supervillain conflicts. The last two episodes of “The Venture Bros.” have set a new tone for the show’s seventh season. As always, the series is all about fathers, but this season is specifically about moving out of their shadows… and maybe killing them.
Two weeks ago, Adult Swim’s “The Venture Bros.” completed a three-episode arc that it described (after it started) as “The Morpho Trilogy.” The episodes wrapped up the events of Season 6, in which the Monarch (Christopher McCulloch) took on the role of the anti-hero Blue Morpho and started killing rival supervillains. The trilogy also dealt with a bunch of history and lore Season 6 introduced and teased — like the identity of the original Blue Morpho (Paul F. Tompkins), who turned out to be the Monarch’s father, and what ultimately happened to Jonas Venture Sr. (Paul Boocock), the father of series protagonist Rusty Venture (James Urbaniak), who supposedly died years earlier.

(Note: This post contains spoilers for the Aug. 12 episode of “The Venture Bros.”)
The first season of “The Venture Bros.” contained a lot of what felt like throwaway jokes, like the legendary story of “Movie Night,” a frightening tale of murder on the space station Gargantua-1, and the “Phantom Spaceman” responsible. But six seasons later — as happens often on “The Venture Bros.” — series creators Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer have brought back that seemingly throwaway joke and turned it into a deeper piece of lore.
Back in Season 1, the tale of Movie Night seemed like a dumb ghost story to get the show’s titular Venture brothers, Hank (Jackson Public) and Dean (Michael Sinterniklaas), to solve a made-up mystery in the vein of the characters they were parodying. Built by the brothers’ grandfather, Dr. Jonas Venture Sr. when Hank and Dean’s father, Rusty (James Urbaniak) was a kid, Gargantua-...

Season 6 of “The Venture Bros.” saw a major shakeup, as the Venture clan moved to New York City and the Monarch was busted down to the bottom levels of villainy. Probably the biggest change, though, was the Monarch taking on the mantle of a supposed good guy — the Blue Morpho.
In Season 6, the Monarch (voiced by “The Venture Bros.” co-creator Jackson Publick) once again found himself unable to “arch” — that is, professionally perform supervillainy against — his hated nemesis, Dr. Rusty Venture (James Urbaniak). Thanks to some unfortunate events back in Season 5 and politics in the professional supervillain governing body known as the Guild of Calamitous Intent, new villains started arching Venture, and the Monarch was stuck clawing his way back up the Guild ranks.

(Note: This post contains massive spoilers for the Aug. 5 episode of “The Venture Bros.”)
The start of Season 7 of “The Venture Bros.” builds out yet another wing of the show’s ever-growing mythos. The big twist at the start of the season was a resurrection of a character who has cast a shadow over the entire 14-year run of the show.
Almost two years after the start of Season 6 of Adult Swim’s animated series satirizing, deconstructing and analyzing pop culture ranging from superheroes to Saturday morning cartoons, “The Venture Bros.” is back — and it’s (seemingly) finally, actually making a story move it has teased fans with over and over again. Like the comics and cartoons it goofs on that are full of once-dead characters returning from the grave, “The Venture Bros.” is finally bringing back Dr. Jonas Venture Sr., at least in some form.

Sure there’s plenty to do at San Diego Comic-Con this week, but what happens if you decide you need a break from panels and looking for back issues? Plenty more, as it happens.
From TV show-branded activations to live comedy shows, even art shows, and best of all, a lot of it is open even to people who weren’t lucky enough to win the lottery and secure a badge for Sdcc 2018.
Comedy lovers will be able to join Conan O’Brien at the TeamCocoHouse pop-up comedy club beginning on Wednesday with events through Saturday. Meanwhile, Purge fans can cleanse their souls at the “Purge Emporium.” And you’ll be able to watch two episodes of the upcoming season of “The Venture Bros.”
Plus, Fans of “The Good Place” can visit heaven on earth — or is it hell? — at a re-creation of NBC comedy’s first season setting in the Gaslamp district.

The Venture Bros. is an amazing show. One of the things that makes it a great show is that the show is pretty much made solely by two dudes, Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer (Christopher McCulloch and Eric A. Hammer, respectively). This is great, because it keeps things consistent and keeps a distinct personality running throughout the show. The issue is that episodes take Forever to produce. For instance, the last episode... The Tick, out now on Amazon Prime Video, is huge fun. Here's how the show achieves what its creator envisioned 21 years ago...
In 1994, I was about to be a freshman in high school. Despite being “too old” for cartoons, there wasn’t really anything else on television on Saturday mornings while I was waiting for wrestling to show up on my television screen. I remember most of the cartoons I saw only in the vaguest terms: the creepy face of Louie Anderson’s gargoyle animated child or a screaming purple cat. I know the name of both shows because I looked them up prior to writing this article, but I couldn’t tell you anything about them. However, one show I watched regularly in the mid to late 90s stuck with me well into adulthood, and that’s the 1994-96 animated version of The Tick.

New York Comic Con has once again rushed by in a giant, fun, crazy blur, and although I didn’t get to nearly all the things I was hoping to, I did have a rockin’ time and see some really cool things I can share.
The first of these were a few great panels I landed seats for, including, as is my tradition, the Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles panel. If you don’t know I love the current Tmnt, then what are you, new here? But seriously, I love it. And each panel I have gone to brings something new and different.
This panel (with Andrea Romano (voice director), Eric Bauza (Tiger Claw), Kevin Michael Richardson (The Shredder), Greg Cipes (Mikey), Rob Paulsen (Donnie), and Ciro Nieli (Executive Producer)) was particularly fun, because one of the things they did was a live read of episode #420, “The Super Shredder,” which...

It was a two and a half-year gap between the fifth and sixth seasons of The Venture Bros. on Adult Swim but was the wait worth it? People are saying how there’s definitely a new sense of urgency this season. The show has acquired stiff new competition in the form of shows like Bojack Horseman and Rick and Morty. This new season needs to prove that Team Venture still has what it takes to stand out. Luckily, it’s clear from the Season 6 premiere that Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer haven’t lost their edge. Are you watching The Venture Bros? You really should be. While it may be easy to take a quick glance at the now six year old series and dismiss it as some kind of decades-too-late Johnny Quest parody, it’s so much more than that. Sure, it may have started off that way, but in the intervening years The Venture Bros has blossomed into a genre-spanning epic of superheroes, villains, adventure, science, coming-of-age comedy and David Bowie (Rip). It’s also, and I’m being totally serious here, one of the best examples of organic world building I can name. It’s clear that writer/directors/creators Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick have the Venture Bros universe fleshed out to an insane degree, and every twist and turn over the past several seasons has felt thought-out, planned and brilliantly executed. I’m a fan of this show, can you tell?...

The Venture Bros. return for an absolutely fearless one-hour special that pays rich rewards to long-time fans...
This review contains spoilers.
All This And Gargantua-2
The Venture Bros. has never been afraid of change. The show has been on the air for twelve years at this point and its fanbase is just as strong as ever. I'd argue that the writing has become better with each season (a feat that most shows only master in reverse). I believe Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick have achieved this by being absolutely fearless when it comes to trusting that the viewers will follow them down whatever path they choose. It's a faith in themselves, too, to know that they are skilled enough to make us want to follow them. With the release of All This And Gargantua-2, I've never been more convinced that it is well warranted.

There was a certain point in history, somewhere between The Simpsons and Daria, when TV animation ceased to be the sole provenance of kids drooling over their morning bowls of Lucky Charms. These days, cartoons for grown-ups are not only ubiquitous, but hilariously twisted and high-quality to boot — and that's due in large part to a phenomenon called Adult Swim. What began as a freaky little block of late-night programming has evolved into a vast, even-freakier universe of animated and live-action series with a sardonic, absurdist sense of humor that's...

Southland, “Chaos”
Written by Zack Whedon
Directed by Christopher Chulack
Aired April 10th, 2013 on TNT
Forget Hannibal. Forget American Horror Story. Forget “The Rains of Castamere.” You want harrowing? You want soul-crushing blackness with a side of trauma? You want pure, unforgiving narrative nihilism? Try on the penultimate episode of sadly-departed cop drama Southland. Whereas the typical episode hones in on a few plotlines between seven or eight characters, “Chaos” revolves mostly around a single, nightmare-inducing act: the kidnapping of two of our principal characters by a pair of deranged meth-heads. On paper, it sounds like your average “Very Special Episode” of… really, any cop show ever. The “team member(s) get nabbed and have to be rescued by the rest of the team” setup is well-worn territory. “Chaos”, however, is a different beast entirely. Based loosely on a real incident, “Chaos” earns its title honestly, unfolding seemingly without rhyme or reason,...

I've got some good news and some bad news about Venture Bros. season 6! The good news is that it will be back in January of 2015, the bad news is that we have to wait until 2015 to see it.
Series creators Doc Hammer and Jackson Public showed up and did a hell of a funny question and answer session. They also revealed that maybe there will be an hour long special episode in the fall of 2014 to tide us all over.
Unfortunately, they didn't share any footage from the upcoming season or talk about it in any way. They just want to keep it all a surprise. They did vaguely hint at a couple of things though, saying that it would feature plenty of Monarch and that they had been thinking about the character Augustus St. Cloud. “We have the worst ideas for him. I hope we get to write them.

The Venture Bros. has been on Adult Swim for over 10 years now. Despite that considerable amount of airtime, there’s only been five seasons with a total of 63 episodes. The amount of detail put into the show by its creators, Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick, is partially why fans had to wait so long for a fifth season. Hammer and Publick aren’t ones to write an episode and have it completed in a week’s time, a la South Park, so a full season of The Venture Bros. takes 13-14 months to complete. Season five went through a transition with new behind-the-scenes workings and with the duo at a new studio, but the show and its miserable characters remained the same. The Venture brothers & Co. have been through some transitions over the years as well, and speaking with Hammer and Publick, they wanted to make sure it was an emotional one, embracing...

If asked to name three beloved shows on Cartoon Network, the most beloved actually, you might be inclined to state Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Venture Brothers.
Two of those shows have games based upon, but one of them doesn't. So, what's the deal with Venture Brothers? That's what one guy asked during the Venture Bros panel at the recently passed San Diego Comic Con.
Simply fast forward to the 15:00 mark in the following video that Destructoid recently highlighted. Though long story short: no one has bothered to ask:
As co-creator Jackson Publick states:
"One game company would have to come to us and go 'Hey we want to [make a game].' Like nobodies ever brought that up ever."
And Doc Hammer adds:
"You act like a lot of people are coming up [to us, to ask if we'd like to do a movie. And then we're all like] 'we don't have time for a movie'… It's that, nobody asks us! We make our own t-shirts!

Three minions take a breather
On Friday, the convention kicked into full gear, with more people in attendance than the previous two days and the start of the big ticket programming in Hall H (The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones). Many of those following the TV programming at the Con opted for Ballroom 20, with Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. among the highlights. Once again, I opted for smaller rooms, starting with the Indigo Ballroom. Unfortunately, given the popularity of the programming that morning, including Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time (always a big hit at the Con) and the Adult Swim lineup, it took quite a while to get in to the room. On the plus side though, the line was a lot of fun, with a ridiculous number of creative, fun costumes (see the bottom of the post for more).

San Diego Comic-Con is a massive journey of discovery. Over the course of four days and five nights, people from all over the world converge on one spot to overload the tram system, punish the sewage system, hemorrhage hard earned cash for colorful plastic and printed pages, and take pictures of each other. In the midst of all that, we also find time to attend panels, catch up with creators, meet new people, reconnect with old friends, find the hottest upcoming trends, and get the early scoop on breaking news. This year the Film School Rejects were represented by two intrepid slack-jawed comic fans: interview specialist Jack Giroux and anger guru Robert Fure. We walked miles, spent hours in lines, followed CosPlay girls around the floor, and harassed the talent into giving us top secret information. After four days, two blackouts, a fist fight, and a cuddle session, here are our 12 favorite discoveries at San Diego Comic...

As my Televerse cohost Simon Howell and I discussed in our Top 10 TV Series of 2013 (So Far), this has been a spectacular year for television, with many shows delivering remarkably consistent seasons (or half-seasons) of memorable, moving television. A number of series were in contention for our Top 10 but didn’t quite make the cut, often because they lacked the week-in, week-out consistency of our final picks. Here is our list of the Best of the Rest, the standout episodes of 2013 from shows that didn’t make our Top 10. With so many choices, and because we’ve seen and are drawing from different series, Simon and I are offering more personalized picks here. As with our Top 10, the list is alphabetical. –Kate Kulzick

Review Kaci Ferrell 18 Jun 2013 - 07:15
Gary takes centre stage in this week's episode of The Venture Bros. Here's Kaci's review of Sphinx Rising...
This review contains spoilers.
5.3 Sphinx Rising
I honestly don't know what kind of spiritual connection Doc Hammer has with Gary, but I could've told you long before the end credits that he'd penned this week's episode. Don't get me wrong — both of the writers of this show are amazing — but there's just something about the way Doc writes Gary that's truly special.
Gary sets out to reform S.P.H.I.N.X. this week after accidentally messing up an O.S.I. mission by blowing Brock and Shore Leave's cover. (For the record, I love that they're still partners even after switching organizations. They make a great team.) He decides to put out a classified ad looking for more team members, only to find his...

The Venture Bros. brings back a long-lost character in this week's geek-bait episode. Here's Kaci's review...
This review contains spoilers.
5.2 Venture Libre
Wow. Just... wow. We all know Doc and Jackson have some of the best continuity out there and that they love to bring back old characters in new and exciting ways, but honestly, raise your hand if you ever thought you'd see Venturestein again. That sound you are hearing right now? It's crickets, because no one could've predicted this. And yet somehow, Doc and Jackson make it work and make it seem almost inevitable that we'd one day run into Venturestein again.
The last time we saw Venturestein was in a season two episode penned by Ben Edlund — it first aired on October 1, 2006. In case you're counting, that's nearly seven years ago, and yet Doc and Jackson trust their viewers enough to...

This Sunday, the fifth season of The Venture Bros. premieres on Adult Swim. The Venture Bros. was created by two men: Jackson Publick (aka Christopher McCulloch) and Doc Hammer. Like so many of the Adult Swim animations, Publick and Hammer write and produce nearly every episode, as well as provide the voices for many of their characters. Though the series is currently shy of sixty episodes, it’s been a little over a decade since the pilot aired. In August of 2004, the series started proper. A year and a half passed between the first and second seasons. Nearly two years stood between seasons two and three.
It’s impressive that The Venture Bros. continues. With our quicksilver attention spans, how can Publick and Hammer expect us to still be interested? Simple. The Venture Bros. is spectacular.
Animation-wise, it beats most of its adult-cartoon peers. There are countless pop culture nods and references.
