When asked about the long journey to Star Trek: Discovery‘s fifth and final season, producer Alex Kurtzman is honest but optimistic. “It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman tells Den of Geek when we chat with him at SXSW 2024. “And yeah, it was an incredibly bumpy first year.”
Kurtzman’s referring to the behind-the-scenes difficulties that plagued the show’s first two seasons. Initially developed by Bryan Fuller, who wrote for Deep Space Nine and Voyager before going on to make fan-favorite shows such as Hannibal and American Gods, Discovery ultimately premiered with Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts as showrunners. By the end of season two, both had left the show, with Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise stepping in as showrunners to right the ship.

[Spoiler warning for those who haven’t seen Valentine.]
“The journey of love is an arduous trek,” a Valentine’s Day card reads in Jamie Blanks’ 2001 film, Valentine (based on the novel of the same name by Tom Savage), and while Blanks’ follow-up to 1998’s Urban Legend is a slasher movie, it’s a slasher movie only secondarily. Primarily, it’s a love story, and at its core are two kindred characters on that arduous trek: Jeremy Melton (later known as Adam Carr) and Dorothy Wheeler. Both so dearly want love. But both are so full of self-doubt. Both are stuffed with feelings of deep inferiority. And consequently, both rage against the society that refuses to love them back. So alike are these two forget-me’s that they are essentially the same person—so much so that it’s equally plausible that Dorothy is or could be the killer just as much as Adam. The two are mirror images of each other,...

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has put in development The Wives, a series adaptation of Tarryn Fisher’s bestselling novel, from writer-producer Kayla Alpert (Netflix’s Wednesday) and producer Patrick Moran.
Written and executive produced by Alpert, The Wives is described as a gripping, saucy, female-driven thriller featuring “Thursday,” a woman who is passionately in love with her husband Seth — even though he has two other wives. Seth reserves Thursdays for her and splits the rest of the week between the other two women and work. She’s never met the other wives. She doesn’t know anything about them. But when curiosity gets the best of her, and she strikes up a relationship with Seth’s youngest wife, she’ll be forced to ask herself: Who exactly is her husband, and how far will she go to find out the truth?
Moran executive produces via his overall deal with Amazon Studios.

Star Trek: Discovery memorably pulled off a shocking twist in its first season, with the U.S.S Discovery’s captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) turning out to be an evil doppelganger from the Mirror Universe. Things got complicated in the latter episodes of the run, but ultimately Lorca ended up dead and the Mirror Georgiou remained in the Prime Universe – ahead of her own spinoff show.
As fans of the series will know, though, season 1 changed a lot over the course of production due to co-creator Bryan Fuller leaving the project. It turns out the re-introducution of the Mirror Universe was one of his concepts, but he originally intended to use it to explore a bold, nuanced theme.
Here’s what Fuller told Robert Meyer in a recent episode of his Robservations YouTube show.
“The thing that really fascinated me in sitting down and crafting the story for Discovery was the human condition.

The showrunner of Fox’s intense vampire drama has a philosophy when it comes to staffing her shows: “I love hiring moms.”
Liz Heldens, who took on the reigns of adapting the popular bloodsucker novel “The Passage” as a series, is a mother herself, and what she believes is that “nobody gets it done like who needs to get home for bedtime. I’m serious. I really feel like women with kids are the most efficient workers.”
It’s a philosophy that other showrunners might not share, but Heldens goes out of her way to subvert that concept. “We have a writer on [‘The Passage’] who has four kids who didn’t want to tell me, and I didn’t know in the meeting. And then she told me on the first day, and I was like, ‘I woulda hired you so much faster,'” she told IndieWire. “You can...

Like a shot through the heart, Scream Factory’s new Collector’s Edition release of Valentine has arrived and is filled with nothing but love for Jamie Blanks’ underappreciated 2001 cinematic love letter to slashers and giallo films. And as someone who has been a fan of the movie since its theatrical release, I am totally a smitten kitten over all the awesomeness contained on this new Valentine Blu, making for an excellent celebration of one of the most overlooked modern horror whodunits, and I hope it helps folks who may have dismissed it in the past realize just how much fun Valentine truly is.

Star Trek: Discovery season 1 drew a lot of controversy due to how disconnected it was in tone and continuity from previous Trek shows, with everything from the use of the F-word in one scene to the redesigned Klingons offending some fans. In contrast, season 2 is going very much in the opposite direction and attempting to bridge the gap between Discovery and The Original Series, which is set 10 years later in Trek history.
This “syncing up with canon” is something that showrunner Alex Kurtzman’s very keen to do from now on. Kurtzman took over on Discovery this season, replacing previous EPs Gretchen J. There are many mysteries in the “Star Trek” universe. One of them was explained on Thursday night at the season two premiere party for “Star Trek: Discovery” in New York when showrunner Alex Kurtzman revealed the backstory of how Tig Notaro found her way onto a spaceship in the role of brilliant engineer Jet Reno.
Turns out, Kurtzman and Notaro have worked together before — more than 20 years ago when both were employed as assistants for filmmakers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert at the duo’s Renaissance Pictures banner in Los Angeles.
“She answered phones and I answered phones,” Kurtzman told Variety during the after-party at the Conrad Hotel.
The two stayed friends over the years and he had her in mind when the Reno character was crafted for season two.

Where that mission will take this ambitious yet flawed series, however, is as yet a mystery.
Picking up moments after Season 1 ended, Captain Pike (Anson Mount) of the U.S.S. Enterprise (you may have heard of it) comes on board Discovery with news from Starfleet — the Enterprise has been disabled by massive systems failure, so he’s taking command of the good ship Discovery to investigate some odd signals that “have the Federation’s hackles up.” That quest leads the Discovery to a rescue mission on a crumbling asteroid, but no real answers as yet to what those signals might be,...

When Star Trek: Discovery returns for its second season Thursday, the eponymous ship will have been in the same spot where it ended season one: face-to-face with the USS Enterprise. But in reality, Discovery is occupying a very different type of space, as the CBS All Access drama has undergone several changes in the months since it last aired. In June, executive producer Alex Kurtzman took over as showrunner on Discovery, replacing the ousted Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts. Kurtzman — who co-created the series with former showrunner Bryan Fuller and oversees all things Star Trek for CBS All Access, including Short Treks, the animated ...

Welcome to “TV Take,” Variety‘s television podcast. On this week’s episode Daniel Holloway, Variety’s executive editor of television, sits down with “Star Trek: Discovery” showrunner Alex Kurtzman to discuss the show’s upcoming second season on CBS All Access.
Later, Variety‘s TV critics Caroline Framke and Daniel D’Addario discuss HBO’s “True Detective” Season 3 and Netflix’s “Sex Education.” Then, Holloway and Variety TV reporter Joe Otterson discuss the latest developments with the “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot.
Kurtzman took over as showrunner on “Discovery” following the sudden exit of co-showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg back in June. According to Kurtzman, his love for the show drove him to take over himself rather than hire an outsider.

Star Trek: Discovery didn’t have the most overwhelmingly positive of receptions when its first season debuted in 2017. Old school Trekkies didn’t enjoy the CBS All Access series’ attempts to make the franchise darker and edgier and also complained about how it tampered with long-established Trek history. Thankfully, the anticipation for season 2 is much more encouraging, as there’s a feeling that many of season 1’s mistakes have been fixed.
Part of the change in direction comes from the change of showrunners. Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts left the production after season 1, meaning Alex Kurtzman – writer and producer on the first two Kelvin timeline movies – took over as showrunner. And while speaking with Digital Spy, he voiced his hopes that the new, improved Discovery can last for many years yet.

Alex Kurtzman is boldly staying where he’s been before: CBS Television Studios.
The co-creator and new showrunner of CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Discovery” has signed a new overall deal to extend his agreement with CBS Television Studios through 2023. Under the five-year pact, Kurtzman will supervise the expansion of CBS’ “Star Trek” franchise, developing new series, mini-series and other content opportunities, including animation.
“There is a very short list of writer-producer-directors that every film and television studio wants to be associated with, and Alex and his Secret Hideout team are always at the top,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “His talent, taste and ability to shepherd a successful project is unparalleled. Alex has done remarkable work for our Studio, dating back seven years to the launch of ‘Hawaii Five-0,’ and we are thrilled that he, Heather and their team will be partnering with us for a long time to come.

When Rainn Wilson’s Harry Mudd makes his entrance into CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Discovery,” he does so in dramatic fashion, stepping onto a cargo bay deck through the mouth of a gormagander. The fictional creature is referred to in the episode and by the show’s creative team as a “space whale” and looks the way it sounds: Picture a whale redesigned to swim through space instead of water. “Discovery” writers dreamed up the creature as a way for Mudd to sneak on board in an episode where he attempts to take over the show’s starship. The gormagander is the central element of what quickly becomes an action scene when Mudd begins firing at crew members. Initially attempted as a practical effect, it was ultimately executed by the show’s digital-effects team.

Overall and first-look deals still drive the television business.
Although some mega-producers have moved to the streaming world, including Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes at Netflix, the overwhelming majority of pacts are still at the studio and linear network level. These deals help lock in show services, as well as keep the development pipeline flowing.
Here is a snapshot at most of the deals currently in place across Hollywood, as of mid-May.

It’s official: Season 2 of “Star Trek: Discovery” will feature the captain of the Enterprise — no, not Kirk, but the one before him. Anson Mount (“Hell on Wheels,” “Marvel’s Inhumans”) is joining the cast of the CBS All Access series as Captain Christopher Pike. It’s more than just casting news — it’s news that has us dying to find out what’s going on with that half-Vulcan who’s also on board the Enterprise at this time.
[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 1 follow.]
Pike’s casting is news we’ve been expecting since the Season 1 finale of “Discovery,” which featured the good ship Discovery encountering the Starfleet flagship and teased Pike’s presence. Executive producers Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts have been clear since the end of the season about having to handle “Discovery’s” temporal placement, as the show exists within a period of “Star Trek” history that now overlaps with established continuity.
