A new episode of the Awfully Good Horror Movies video series has just been released, and in this one we’re taking a look at a movie that has the reputation of being one of the worst movies ever made. Actually, it’s widely considered to be the best worst movie ever made. It’s 1990’s Troll 2 (watch it Here), and you can hear all about it by watching the video embedded above!
Written and directed by Claudio Fragasso (going by the name Drake Floyd), Troll 2 has the following synopsis: When young Joshua learns that he will be going on vacation with his family to a small town called Nilbog, he protests adamantly. He is warned by the spirit of his deceased grandfather that goblins populate the town. His parents, Michael and Diana, dismiss his apprehensions, but soon learn to appreciate their son’s warnings. There just aren't enough movies these days about man-sized sentient pus monsters, and that's a shame. Set in the early '60s, Tyler Russell's Cyst is a throwback creature feature that embraces the goofiness of the era's drive-in fare with a knowing wink and a great deal of love. Dermatologist Dr. Guy, played to the hilt by Troll 2's George Hardy, is a proto Dr. Pimple Popper, who seems to spend his entire day surgically draining various enormous cysts, which seems to always result in huge geysers of pus flying around his office. Unfortunately for his nurse, Patricia (Eva Haberman), it seems that the vast majority of this bodily waste appears to end up showering her in disgusting goo. But Dr. Guy has big dreams, an...

"Let's blast this thing!!" Our friends at Bloody Disgusting have revealed a gory teaser trailer for an extreme gross-out horror comedy called Cyst, which premiered at both FrightFest and Fantastic Fest this year. This is one of these super disgusting, gory-as-f&!k, body horror creations that may make you puke. In the 1960s, a nurse's last day is ruined when a crazy doctor inadvertently creates a cyst monster that terrorizes the office. Everybody scream! The cyst is loose! The cult horror stars Greg Sestero, Eva Habermann, Jason Douglas, Gene Jones, George Hardy, Darren Ewing, Francesca Santoro, Keturah Branch, and Kyle Roberts as the Cyst Monster. Hell yes - man in suit! My goodness this looks so revolting. But it might be ridiculous fun? Or not? Only one way to find out ha! Dive right in. But please make sure you wear a mask. Here's the first teaser trailer (+ poster) for Tyler Russell's Cyst,...

Fans of wonderfully wooden trash, look no further. Tyler Russell’s vintage monster movie throwback is a total blast of blood, puss, and ominously oozy bodily fluids. A loud, brash, B-movie love letter, it’s the sort of geniusly crap genre fare that caters to a very specific audience, and does so in the least pretentious, most affectionate way imaginable. Expect stupid, get stupider, and love it all the same.
Mimicking the 50s/60s drive-in charm, Cyst goes all-in on its title right from the off. Maniacal skin specialist Dr. Guy (Troll 2’s George Hardy) loses control of his dastardly pimple-erasing machine, accidentally creating a giant cyst monster that lays waste to his entire surgery, and everyone in it. On her last day on the job, no-nonsense nurse Patricia (Sky Sharks’ Eva Habermann) leads the charge, but with the doctor losing his mind and the monster mutating more and more by the second,...

It’s the early 1960s and a small-town doctor invents a machine that uses laser technology to remove skin abnormalities. He pulls out all the stops to make sure his final chance to get the patent on his ‘Get Gone’ appliance goes smoothly. But his nurse thinks the contraption is dangerous and not ready. The struggle between the two causes the apparatus to malfunction creating a giant cyst monster that goes on a bloody rampage.
Very much in the vein of the William Castle and Rgoer Corman flicks of the 50s and 60s, Cyst is – like the remake of The Brain That Wouldn’t Die which also screened as part of Frightfest – very much an homage to the films of that period, with set and costume design,...

A plastic surgery clinic full of nervous customers. A frustrated nurse on her last day. A crazed doctor determined to revolutionise treatment with his new laser-powered machine. When an accident occurs, a cyst removed from a body gains independent life, grows to gigantic size and goes on the rampage. Some people will never comprehend the appeal of this kind of film. For those who do, it seems to promise thrills galore. Unfortunately, whilst there is some fun to be had, it never quite delivers as it should.
The best thing about the film is Eva Habermann as the nurse. It's tough to deliver a multi-layered performance that still works with this type of material, but necessary to sustaining such a film over time, and she makes a very effective lead. Less successful is George Hardy as the doctor. He's got his manic laugh down well and delivers on evil gurning but.

"You must urgently find me the old book of magic!" Devilworks has released an official trailer for Trolls World, a German fantasy horror, still looking for distribution at the Efm coming up later this month. This trailer may not help much. Not to be confused with the Trolls World Tour animated sequel out this year, this movie is a throwback to the "best worst movie" horror Trolls 2. "Packed with special effects and multi-dimensions, Trolls World follows an evil troll who is accidentally brought back to life and is out for revenge for his 700 years of suffering. He possesses the body of a young woman and sets his sights on unleashing an army of trolls to take over the world." Starring Eva Habermann, George Hardy, Katy Karrenbauer, Ralf Bauer, Cecilia Pillado, Désirée Nick, and Jirí Lábus. This really does look like a terrible D-movie lost in time, but at least they made a practical puppet.

Based on the real-life story, The Front Runner follows charismatic politician Gary Hart, who was considered the overwhelming front runner for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination when his campaign was sidelined by the story of an extramarital relationship with Donna Rice. The pic, which recently screened at Telluride and then at the Toronto International Film Festival will close out the fest on Nov. 1 with director Jason Reitman in attendance.

In the wake of the success of Joe Dante’s classic Gremlins in the mid-’80s, movie theaters were flooded with low-budget horror movies about pint-sized creatures wreaking havoc on unsuspecting humans. No one took better advantage of this phenomenon than Charles Band, who would build a dynasty of films about little monsters first with his Empire Pictures and later with Full Moon Features—everything from Ghoulies to Puppet Master, Demonic Toys to Dolls. One of Empire’s first fantasy horror films about little monsters, 1986’s Troll makes its HD debut on Scream Factory’s Blu-ray alongside its notorious sequel, Troll 2, often considered one of the worst movies ever made.
The original Troll, directed by makeup effects legend John Carl Buechler in his feature debut, tells the story of the Potter family, recent transplants to a San Francisco apartment complex who begin to notice strange goings-on in their building,...

This week annoyed by a loudmouth blogger of some repute, who declared anime for paedophiles and insulted more or less the whole of Japanese culture, I decided to watch Netflix original anime Knights of Sidonia. His comments have widely been circulated and condemned by many people and he’s just made himself look a fool, and all this just because Gus Van Sant might be directing a Death Note movie. I recognise that anime is not for everyone but still, by dismissing all of it you are missing out on an awful lot of classic work and influential stuff.
Knights of Sidonia has been billed as a Netflix original but it’s quite hard to imagine that they would have been involved in the production of something like this, it’s pretty far out there even for anime and its more likely that Netflix have done what they did with...

The most terrifying thing about the 1990 horror film “Troll 2” isn’t just that it was made, but that it was made with such an unapologetic lack of filmmaking talent that it’s become a punchline for jokes about bad movies ever since, rivaled only by recent additions to the “so bad it’s good” pantheon as Tommy Wiseau’s midnight staple “The Room” or even something like “Birdemic.” Thankfully, actor Michael Paul Stephenson didn’t try to hide from his work in the film for too long (he was 12 at the time), and would go on to direct “Best Worst Movie,” a documentary that won over many with its study of the cult surrounding “Troll 2,” the film’s egocentric director who believed he made a masterpiece, and the film’s lead George Hardy – an Alabama dentist bursting with personality, who long kept his sole acting credit in “Troll 2...

In his recent book Monsters In The Movies, John Landis talks about how movies are one of the few art forms in which even the bad examples can be enjoyed. The director of ‘American Werewolf In London’ and ‘The Blues Brothers’ further argued this notion with a recent interview with Tor.com.
“Movies have this unique power over books, music, or paintings. We’ll watch a bad movie. If we see a bad painting, we’ll not linger on it for hours at a time, we’ll walk way. But we don’t do that with movies. We’ll sit through them”
Landis is absolutely right, and it’s now increasingly common for awful movies to cultivate their own cult fanbases, as well as recognition for being some of the worst of all time.
In celebration of good-bad movies everywhere, here’s my personal pick of 10 of the most enjoyable bad movies ever made.

If you’re the kind of person who builds air cannons and small motors for bowls of spaghetti around Halloween, Michael Stephenson might want to have a word with you. The director of Best Worst Movie is setting his sights on the boldest homemade haunted house fanatics to create a new documentary for NBCUniversal. The project is casting right now, and you can submit yourself or friends or family. Or enemies if you’re so inclined. If you’re not that kind of person, the good news is that you can still kick back and enjoy what sounds like a fun documentary by a proven team. Magic Stone will be producing, and they’ve brought on the Alamo Drafthouse’s Zack Carlson as a writer/producer. In short, this sounds awesome. People who try to make strangers pee themselves in terror should be celebrated, and it’s high time a filmmaker did so. The...

It’s really hard not to love child-actor-turned-director Michael Paul Stephenson. You probably kinda sorta remember him as the doomed Joshua Waits in that awful movie, Troll 2. Years later, he would make a documentary about that film and the experiences the cast and crew had before, during, and after, called Best Worst Movie. Stephenson, along with Bwm’s central focus, the also lovable George Hardy, toured their asses off so show the world this film. Gatw fell in love with it, and half of America did as well (including Roger Ebert!).

Documentaries became a box office factor with the rise of such films as "Hoop Dreams" and "Roger & Me." Before then, there were hit music documentaries like "Woodstock" but most other nonfiction films could expect short runs in few theaters before dutiful audiences. What a small but growing minority of Friday night moviegoers is beginning to discover is that there's a good chance the movie they might enjoy most at the multiplex is a doc.
In alphabetical order, these were the best documentaries I saw in 2010:
"45365" is the zip code of Sidney, Ohio. The brothers Bill and Turner Ross were born there perhaps 30 years ago. They knew everybody in town, and when they spent seven months of 2007 filming its daily life, their presence must have become commonplace. Their film evokes what Winesburg, Ohio might have looked like as a documentary.
The film is privileged. No one is filmed with a hidden camera.

New Video Group
Release Date: November 16, 2010
Imagine, somewhere out there in the United States of America, there is a video store that actually has a section called “Holy Fucking Shit.” It must take a very special movie to end up in that particular section, and it must take a very special audience to embrace that movie. The new documentary Best Worst Movie is about such a film.
Meet George Hardy. He’s a dentist living and working in the small town of Alexander City, Alabama. George is a really nice guy. Everyone loves the man and it’s not hard to see why. Title: Best Worst Movie Directed by: Michael Stephenson Starring: George Hardy, Michael Stephenson and Darren Ewing Horrific acting, an awful script, confusing plot twists and bad cinematography are just some of the reasons why movies flop at the box office and receive negative reviews from critics. But when all of these things are combined in one film, as is the case with the 1990 horror release ‘Troll 2,’ the project rightfully becomes known as the worst movie ever made. To celebrate the failed film’s 20th anniversary and detail how it continues to affect all of its actors today, ‘Troll 2’s child star, Michael Stephenson, directed the new documentary ‘Best Worst Movie.’ Stephenson also aimed [...]...

The Flick:
I finally sat down and watched Troll 2 one year ago after viewing a trailer online for a documentary named Best Worst Movie, which chronicles the making of the film and the unexpected cult phenomena that has grown to enormous preportions. Michael Stephenson played the leading kid Joshua Waits in the sequel, and serves as Director here. He tracked down the majority of the cast and crew for a flick that is considered one of the worst movies all-time according to rating system websites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb.
As a child, Michael Stephenson recieved an unlucky Christmas present in the form of a VHS copy of Troll 2 and he has been running from that bad memory ever since. For years, he just wanted to forget about this Utah shot production made by prolific Italian director Claudio Fragasso. I will admit that Troll 2 is not going...

Rest your wallets, folks, there are hardly any new major horror releases this week. Instead we're getting mostly re-released Blu-ray and 3D Blu-rays. Really the only thing that's piquing our curiosity is RoboGeisha!

Troll 2 Directed by: Claudio Fragasso Written by: Rossella Drudi and Claudio Fragasso Starring: George Hardy, Michael Paul Stephenson, Robert Ormsby, Margo Prey, Connie Young I took my first trip to Nilbog just a few years ago, when my friends Katie, Nuno and Erin hosted a Halloween party that included Troll 2 as the main event. At the time, I thought they might be somewhat unique in their undying love for this movie, and I wasn't completely aware of its reputation or rabid fanbase. I knew only that it was a strange, mostly forgotten b-movie that fell under the category of "so bad it's good". Needless to say, after one watch it became very clear why people are so obsessed with this film, and now, thanks to actor Michael Paul Stephenson's wonderful documentary Best Worst Movie, Troll 2 and the story behind its production have since become the stuff of legend.

The appeal of bad movies has always been a little hard to explain, but it could probably best be compared to the innate hilarity of something like America’s Funniest Home Videos (basically now transformed into Youtube, freeing us from the groove-killing of the hosts). No matter how high our brain function as homo sapiens ever gets, we will always be reduced to our most primal, adolescent form at the sight of some one falling off a ladder, being hit in the face by a baseball bat, or getting attacked by a dog (preferably if the person is dignified or has no idea that it’s coming); similarly, it’s hilarious to see a director or writer completely humiliated upon the release of a truly awful film, as they have failed on a scale that is far larger and more expensive as well as more personal. But no matter how...

I grew up renting out VHS’s from his local video store’s horror section around the age of 10. Most of the time I would rent 6 VHS tapes each Saturday night specifically out of the horror section. So, I have seen a lot of horror. While the beginning of this video renting period, the first movies I rented were the classics. Then, I moved on to the eye catching covers. Then, it was the awesomely named titles and films that had ultra cool tag lines.
I’ve always been a slasher/supernatural guy myself. Monsters are always tons of fun, but to me, if it ain’t a Krite – monsters from the film Critters – it didn’t scare me. Something about those teeth always got to me. I remember passing by Troll as a kid with some trepidation. It wasn’t because I was scared to rent it, it was...

What makes a movie bad? Is it the cheesy dialog or the atrocious acting? How about the writing, editing, production budget, etc.? One has to wonder. After all what one person considers terrible another may find enjoyable and vise versa. This void between good film and bad film is where the 1990 horror flick, Troll 2, calls home. Still, maybe the biggest question is how does such a horrible movie in the eyes of so many become a cult classic?...

With the barrage of remake after remake and 3D announcement after 3D announcement why hasn’t the legendary “Best Worst Movie” ever made, Troll 2, made it into the rehash department? Let’s face it, we see blockbuster written all over this idea…
So no studio has stood up to this challenge and with HorrorBid celebrating the “Best Worst Movie” we thought it would be fun to do a little “What If” game here. We have taken it upon ourselves to cast the remake and give you a little sample of what our “Troll 2: The Remake” might contain.
We start things off with a modest 400 million dollar budget. Why such a drastic leap from what the original cost to make in 1989 to the 400 mill? Well it’s simple. Casting isn’t cheap. It was tough to get Sean Connery out of retirement to play the role of Grandpa Seth.

A movie came out on VHS in 1990 to little fanfare. It was called Troll 2, even though it had nothing to do with the previous Troll. It had a threadbare plot about a town named Nilbog, populated by hungry vegetarian goblins (not trolls) that turned humans into plants to eat them. It is known as the worst movie of all time. And the child actor who starred in it all those years ago has made a documentary about the many small-time actors who starred in that film. It’s called Best Worst Movie, and it is fantastic.
Troll 2, up until a few years ago, was simply regarded as a bad horror movie, with no budget and awful acting. But gradually, people started to realize something; Troll 2 wasn’t just a terrible movie, it was terribly good. Soon, the movie was being screened at sold-out shows all over the country,...

The most unlikely act of cultural excavation and redemption, Michael Paul Stephenson’s Best Worst Movie is a hilarious and poignant celebration of not only the communal experience of making and watching movies but the sheer randomness of life itself. The doc is Stephenson’s attempt to find out why a seemingly execrable B-movie he made as a child actor, Troll 2, has garnered a cult following of viewers who not only get off on its badness but also find an odd kind of joy in its screwy storytelling. While Stephenson is present in the film, he smartly chooses as the doc’s focus one of his co-stars, a small-town Alabama dentist named George Hardy, who onscreen resembles a cross between Jim Nabors and Joe Biden. Hardy is the...
