A formidable actress, Laura Dern has been working in Hollywood since age 5. At 13 years old, the daughter of icons Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern became the youngest Miss Golden Globe and soon thereafter earned critical acclaim with her breakout role in Blue Velvet. The 1986 film also marked the first time Dern and director David Lynch would work together throughout her career, a pairing that continues with Twin Peaks’ celebrated return on Showtime.

Women's History Month continues with Adam Armstrong on Laura Dern in "Recount"
Katherine Harris and Laura Dern as Katherine Harris
Born: Katherine Harris clawed her way into this world on April 5th, 1957 and, presumably, crawled to her mother’s boudoir to try her first crack at putting on lipstick and dabbling in the different shades of foundation. Rose to prominence as Florida’s Secretary of State during the 2000 election.
Death (in politics): Still kicking, albeit no longer Florida’s Secretary of State. After a failed 2006 senate election run, she still combats jokes regarding her unfairly ridiculed makeup techniques during the 2000 election recount fiasco.
In the 2008 HBO film Recount, we are introduced to Harris when she is awoken, startled, at 3:52 a.m. by a phone call on the night of the election. She groggily answers the phone while the voice on the other end heatedly asks who the winner...

Chicago – When the HBO film, “Game Change,” was first announced, it sounded rather unnecessary. Why would Alaska governor-turned-vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s overinflated celebrity deserve such a prestigious biopic? Wasn’t her TLC program, not to mention Tina Fey’s brilliant SNL parody, more than enough small-screen exposure for the oft-embarrassing politician?
Yet this film, superbly directed by Jay Roach, is less about Palin then it is about the superficial posturing that has taken over America’s political landscape. Mark Halperin and John Heilemann’s bestselling book of the same name explored how celebrity triumphed over substance during the 2008 election season, as Republicans scrambled to equal the game-changing candidacy of Barack Obama. Screenwriter Danny Strong centers his film on Steve Schmidt, the campaign strategist who backed Palin and lived to regret it.
Blu-ray Rating: 4.5/5.0

There's not much Laura Dern can't do in terms of acting. She's played everything from a paleobotanist in "Jurassic Park" to Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris in "Recount." But the biggest challenge for this two-time Golden Globe winner may be making something of her new HBO series "Enlightened."
The show centers around Amy Jellicoe (Dern), an executive at an Herbalife-type organization. After an affair with her married boss (Charles Esten) goes sour, she's set to be forced into a lesser division at the company. For a woman whose identity is so wrapped up in her career, combined with her own personal struggles, this news sets off a mental breakdown.
Her road to recovery begins at a holistic treatment center in Hawaii. It is here that Amy sees God, or in her words, something "better than God." As the title of the show suggests, Amy is now "Enlightened."
When she returns to Los Angeles,...

School is back in session and the summer movie season has wrapped, which means the pop-culture focus temporarily shifts to television until the annual slate of Oscar contenders and holiday blockbusters hit theaters.
This fall, though, you'll notice the new television season has a host of big movie stars transitioning to primetime, either for the first time, like Luke Wilson, or in a splashy return, like Ashton Kutcher.
While the majority of film actors are headlining high-profile series, a couple of them are lining up for key supporting roles in ensemble casts. Take a look at these 15 familiar faces and find out where you can catch them on the small screen this year.
Zooey Deschanel, 'New Girl'
There's no other actress who can combine beautiful and quirky with adorable and dorky (adorkable) like Deschanel can. The "500 Days of Summer" actress joins her sister Emily (of "Bones" fame) on...

/Film reports that Austin Powers and Meet the Parents director Jay Roach will be helming the HBO original film Game Change, which looks at the 2008 Presidential election between John McCain and Barack Obama. The project is based on John Heilemann and Mark Halperin‘s 2010 book of the same name and will be adapted by screenwriter (and former Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast member) Danny Strong.
Roach and Strong previously worked together on the 2008 HBO film Recount, the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning look at the controversial 2000 Florida recount. That film is a terrific, tense and funny political drama, with top-notch performances from Kevin Spacey, Denis Leary and especially Laura Dern as the optimistically-clueless Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris.
I doubt anyone would have guessed, after seeing the Austin Powers trilogy, that Roach would emerge as a skillful director of political drama, charging the often absurd situations with a buoyant humor absent in,...

• Laura Dern has inked a deal with HBO for her first regular TV gig. She and Mike White -- who directed her in "Year of the Dog" in 2007 -- have created "Enlightened" a half-hour single-camera comedy about "a self-destructive woman who has a revelatory experience at a treatment center and becomes determined to live an enlightened life, creating unexpected havoc at home and work." Dern's mother, Diane Ladd, as well as Luke Wilson and Sarah Burns are to co-star in this showcase for Dern, which will begin its 10-episode run this year. Last year, Dern won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of former Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris in the HBO...

HBO has picked up the Mike White-Laura Dern comedy pilot "Enlightened" to series with a 9-episode order, bringing the total order to 10 half-hours, including the pilot.
The single-camera comedy stars Dern as a self-destructive woman who has a revelatory experience at a treatment center and becomes determined to live an enlightened life, creating unexpected havoc at home and work.
"I'm stoked to finally party with HBO," White said. "I feel lucky to have been given this opportunity to make something original, heartfelt and weird."
White wrote the pilot script based on a story by him and Dern. The two are executive producing, with David Bernad and Jason Weinberg serving as producers.
"Creating a series with the ever-brave HBO and Mike White has been an incredibly exciting journey for me," Dern said. "I'm madly in love with my character Amy."
Co-starring in the pilot opposite Dern were Luke Wilson,...

We can add Laura Dern to the long list of big-time movie actresses who've moved into TV roles. Her comedy project with Mike White is moving forward with a pilot order from HBO.
Tentatively titled Enlightened, the single-camera comedy stars Dern as a self-destructive woman who has a spiritual awakening and decides to live an enlightened life. Of course, this creates all sorts of turmoil at home and work.
Dern's knock-out performance as Katherine Harris in 2008's Recount got the attention of HBO. White, her director on the 2007 feature film Year of the Dog, says he's "stoked," noting, "The only thing I can think of cooler than making a show at HBO is doing it with Laura Dern."
HBO continues to be a favorite of mine, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this show fares. I've been a fan of Dern's dating back to her roles in Rambling Rose and Wild at Heart,...

Mike White and Laura Dern's comedy project at HBO is moving forward with a pilot order from the network.
The single-camera comedy, tentatively titled "Enlightened," stars Dern as a self-destructive woman who has a spiritual awakening and becomes determined to live an enlightened life, creating havoc at home and work.
The project stems from Dern's standout performance as Katherine Harris in the 2008 HBO film "Recount," which got the attention of HBO brass, and the actress' close relationship with White, her director on the 2007 film "Year of the Dog."
"The only thing I can think of cooler than making a show at HBO is doing it with Laura Dern," White said. "I am totally stoked."
Production on the pilot is scheduled to begin in December.
"Enlightened" has enjoyed a quick turnaround, comparable to the fast-tracked development of another HBO comedy, the breakout summer hit "Hung."
