He suffered with skin cancer for decades, and James Rebhorn had plenty of time to contemplate the meaning of his life before his tragic death on Friday (March 21).
In fact, the “Homeland” star followed in the footsteps of an Alzheimer’s-stricken character in his final play “Too Much, Too Much, Too Many,” and wrote his own obituary as a final gift to his family.
Rebhorn concluded the essay, “Jim was fortunate enough to earn his living doing what he loved. He was a professional actor...Without his exceptional teachers and the representation of the best agents in the business, he wouldn’t have had much of a career. He was a lucky man in every way.”
The full obituary states, “James Robert Rebhorn was born on Sept. 1, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pa. His mother, Ardell Frances Rebhorn, nee Hoch, loved him very much and supported all his dreams. She taught him the...

James Rebhorn, the character actor who died at the weekend, wrote an obituary to himself before his death from skin cancer.
The star, who appeared in the movies Scent of a Woman opposite Al Pacino and Independence Day as well as the TV series Homeland, passed away at his home on Friday afternoon (March 21). He was 65.
Rebhorn fought a 20-year battle with melanoma and took time out to write the obituary, titled 'His Life, According to Jim', which was published by Jersey City's St. Paul Lutheran Church on Monday (March 24).
He paid tribute to his mother and father, who "loved him very much and supported all his dreams", as well as praised his wife Rebecca and his two daughters.
The star also praised the actors' unions who represented him, his teachers and his agents, adding: "He was a lucky man in every way."

Character actor James Rebhorn, who died at the young age of 65 from Melanoma, wrote his own obituary during his final days. In a touching tribute to his family, the actor- who had quietly battled illness since being diagnosed twenty years ago- wrote this, knowing the end was near:
“James Robert Rebhorn was born on Sept. 1, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pa. His mother, Ardell Frances Rebhorn, nee Hoch, loved him very much and supported all his dreams. She taught him the value of good manners and courtesy, and that hospitality is no small thing. His father, James Harry Rebhorn, was no less devoted to him. From him, Jim learned that there is no excuse for poor craftsmanship. A job well done rarely takes more or less time than a job poorly done. They gave him his faith and wisely encouraged him to stay in touch with God.

Veteran character actor James Rebhorn died Friday from melanoma at the age of 65. His career spanned decades with roles too numerous to count. Despite not being nominated for Best Director, Louise Archambault’s Gabrielle managed to pull off what we thought was the impossible (our Leora Heilbronn has pegged the drama as the film that should win, but favored Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy as the best bet) winning Best Motion Picture at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards (a.k.a Canadian Oscars). If the out of synch supposed “live” telecast wasn’t bad enough (all awards including the winning film were announced almost one hour prior to on twittersphere), the show’s producers gave Gabrielle winning producers Luc Déry and Kim McCraw the equivalent of end of toilette paper roll in terms of time.
The voters also choose Gabrielle‘s Gabrielle Marion-Rivard as Best Actress in a Leading Role, while the heavily favored Enemy grabbed five awards, Best Direction for Villeneuve, Best Original Score for the excellent Danny Bensi/Saunder Jurriaans pairing , Best Editing,...

Meryl Streep thanked "everybody in England" for allowing her to come and "trample all over their history" as she picked up her Golden Globe award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher.
The Oscar-winning actress spoke of the "thrill" of winning the prize for best actress (drama) after playing Baroness Thatcher in the film The Iron Lady.
"This is such a thrill but really, really embarrassing in a year that saw so many extraordinary performances by women in leading roles - by my friends, by people I do not know, by people that I am so inspired by," she said in her acceptance speech.
The 62-year-old, who received her award from British actor Colin Firth, remembered during her speech that she did not have her glasses with her and would have to give her speech from memory.
"Oh, I am going to have to remember my speech!" she said. She added:...

E.W. Golden Globe winner Madonna Madonna displays her Golden Globe backstage in the press room at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, CA on Sunday, January 15, 2012. Madonna won her Golden Globe in the category of Best Original Song – Motion Picture for "Masterpiece" for W.E., which she also directed. "Masterpiece" has music and lyrics by Madonna, Julie Frost and Jimmy Harry. Elton John's (not at all happy) reaction when he heard that Madonna had won for Best Original Song was priceless. Less humorous was Ricky Gervais' joke referring to the openly gay Elton John as a pop music "queen." The double entendre was that the pop music queen who won was Madonna, not John. Madonna took her own revenge on Gervais later on when she referred to him as a "girl," one who could rid her (Madonna) of her virginity — in...

The 69th Annual Golden Globes may have begun as a story about unleashing the risqué Ricky Gervais on the industry for his third and final time as host, but the narrative ended with more of the same this dull awards season. The Globes’ split categories predictably anointed presumed “best pictures” The Descendants and The Artist, the only two horses to bet on for Oscar glory in six weeks. As the returning host said truthfully, “It’s just like the Oscars, without the esteem.”

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association presented the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards last night and there were a few surprises, not least how tame controversial comedian Ricky Gervais was in hosting. More on that later but for now the results are important (although are they, really? – Isn’t this the 6th cousin to the Oscars who the Oscars barely recognise and like a disgruntled relation has to contend with once a year?) and the two big winners were Alexander Payne’s The Descendants and Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist with two major awards each.

The 2012 Golden Globe Awards went as expected for the film nominees -- and defied all expectations when it came to TV winners.
For the big screen contenders, favorites "The Descendants" and "The Artist" took home the Best Picture awards, for Drama and Musical/Comedy, respectively. George Clooney and Jean Dujardin won the corresponding Best Actor awards. In the main actress categories, Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams both won for playing historical icons; Streep, for her turn as Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady," and Williams for her role as Marilyn Monroe in "My Week With Marilyn."
On the TV side, "Homeland" won Best Drama Series, giving the freshman series a win over "Boardwalk Empire" and "Modern Family" repeated as Best Comedy. Not too unexpected, sure, but how about Best Actors: for Drama, Kelsey Grammer won for "Boss" and in Comedy, Matt LeBlanc won for "Episodes."
Meanwhile, Ricky Gervais was rather timid,...

Here they are... the first major movie and TV award nominations of 2011. The Golden Globes has always been a solid representation of what we might see for the Oscar nominations. The winners end up being a little different though. There are a few surprises on the list that I didn't expect to like Hugo, The Ides of March and War Horse being nominated for best picture. I just didn't think these films would get that big of a nomination. It is good to see that Rooney Mara got a nomination of best actress from her role in The Girl With the Drgon Tattoo, and Ryan Gosling for Best actor in the Ides of March. I'm not sure if they will win or not, but it's good to see them get a nomination. There were really a lot of fantastically great movies this year and it looks like it's going to be a fun reward season.

Want to know who’s up for a gong at this year’s Golden Globe Awards? Here’s the full list of 2011’s nominations…
A nod of recognition. A slap on the back for a job well done. We all like to get them from time to time, and the Golden Globes are but one of the American film industry’s annual celebrations of filmmaking greatness.
And while it’s not always the very best films that get the praise they deserve, it’s refreshing to see some of the nominations for this year’s Golden Globes straying somewhat outside the obvious.
