The 2022 Tony Award nominations have been unveiled and, per usual, we have opinions! Susan Haskins joined us in a lively discussion to dissect this crop of nominees. We reveal what we think were the cruelest snubs, most pleasant surprises, and analyze how this set of nominees may change the Tony race as we head towards the June 12th ceremony. Watch the full video above.
While our panel was happy overall with how much the Tony nominators were able to spread the wealth this year, not every production made the cut. Sam noted that “all the plays were standouts this year,” but five stellar new works were totally skunked: “Birthday Candles,” “Chicken & Biscuits,” “Is This a Room,” “Pass Over,” and “Thoughts of a Colored Man.” There’s not enough slots for everyone, but when we saw so many categories expand due to ties in voting (“how many ties can you have?...

Congratulations to Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Gordon Cox (Variety) for topping all Experts with an outstanding score of 88.46% when predicting the 2019 Tony Awards winners on Sunday. Not only did they beat all other Experts but they tied as the best of over 1,000 people predicting the Broadway event worldwide. See Experts’ scores.
Our top scorers each just missed three of the 26 categories. Travers’ misses were for Best Play Revival (choosing “All My Sons” over “The Boys in the Band”), Best Lighting Design of a Play (choosing “Network” over “Ink”) and Best Sound Design of a Play (choosing “The Ferryman” over “Choir Boy”). Cox’s misses were for Best Orchestrations (choosing “Oklahoma!” over “Hadestown”), Best Lighting Design of a Play (choosing “The Ferrman” over “Ink”) and Best Sound Design of a Play (choosing “The Ferryman” over “Choir Boy”). Both men got Best Musical (“Hadestown”), Best Musical Revival (“Oklahoma!”), Best Play (“The Ferryman”) and all acting categories.

Broadway fans bemoaned the lack of leading men in musicals this year with only five eligible for consideration at the Tony Awards. While Paul Alexander Nolan (“Escape to Margaritaville”) was snubbed by the nominating committee, any of the four who reaped bids could win. Below, we break down the most competitive race in advance of Sunday’s ceremony
The frontrunner is Joshua Henry (“Carousel”). He leads with 7/4 odds to take home his first Tony Award. Henry has the backing of five experts as of this writing: Susan Haskins (Theater Talk), Gordon Cox (Variety), David Gordon (Theatermania), Jack Smart (Backstage), and Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby). After his Tony nominated turns in “The Scottsboro Boys” and “Violet,” voters may feel it’s finally time to reward the Broadway star who delivers a flawless interpretation of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein number ‘Soliloquy.’ Henry is the first actor to land a Tony nomination for the part.

“Nothing’s going to compete against ‘The Band’s Visit,’” Michael Musto roars when we size up the Tony Awards race for Best Musical during our webcam chat with Susan Haskins (Theater Talk). Watch above or listen to the audio podcast below.
Michael is right, according to the predictions of all 12 Experts, who give “The Band’s Visit” 1/20 odds to prevail over “Mean Girls” (40/1), “SpongeBob SquarePants” (40/1) and “Frozen” (80/1). See latest odds in all categories.
However, there is fierce disagreement among the Experts in the race for Best Actor in a Musical. Three strong contenders battle for the lead. Susan and I pick Joshua Henry for his big, powerhouse turn in “Carousel,” but Michael opts for Tony Shaloub (“The Band’s Visit”) while warning that many other pundits are picking Ethan Slater (“SpongeBob SquarePants”).
“I think the smart money is on Ethan Slater, but I’m going with Shaloub,” Michael says.
