Saturday night in Hollywood, “Survivor” staged a massive Emmys For Your Consideration event featuring perennial host Jeff Probst, past contestants, authentic challenges, and island-themed drinks and bites. With the recent death of Sonja Christopher still on the minds of fans, Gold Derby chatted exclusively with Probst about his thoughts on the first-ever contestant to be voted off of CBS’s reality TV show.
“Every time I saw Sonja,” Probst remembered, “whether it was on the first season when she was tripping in the first challenge and that kind of doomed her, or when I would see her at ‘Survivor’ events, she was always joy, always happy, always wanting to know how you were doing. And I thought it was pretty interesting that first season, that the first person voted out was Sonja, who had recovered from cancer and came with her ukulele just to have some fun — and then the...

“Sonya was one of the kindest people to ever play Survivor,” host Jeff Probst wrote in a statement posted to Instagram on Saturday, confirming Christopher’s death. “Every interaction I had with her over the years was lovely. In the latest “Survivor 46” deleted scene (watch above), Q Burdette gives his personal assessment about each of the players still in the game. It’s the morning of Day 14 at the Nuinui tribe, before host Jeff Probst temporarily splits the 12 remaining castaways into two separate groups. Q claims that he’s “always had this gift to connect with people,” and he uses it to gain “trust” and “get information” from those around him. “In this game, I’ve got a little bit of information from everybody,” the 29-year-old real estate agent from Tennessee tells the camera. “And now I can put the pieces of the puzzle together.”
Q then lists off certain quality traits he has noticed about everyone around him, including most notably Venus Vafa. He really doesn’t hold back when it comes to the 24-year-old data analyst from Toronto, likening her to a scaly reptile with fangs.

The second season of House Of Villains is finally going to happen. The names of the reality television stars have just been released. The list of villains is quite impressive. Reaching deep into the history of Survivor, there is a previous winner (and villain) fans will love to see return to reality television.
Previous Survivor Winners’ Returns To Reality Television
There have been several Survivor winners who have returned to reality television. Some of these previous winners have done quite well in their attempts to win the prize in new shows. Even though their Survivor days may not be over, they made the choice to branch out and try new things.

Battlestar Galactica has a compelling premise. Twelve human space colonies in a distant part of the universe are at war with a race of artificially intelligent robots called the Cylons. A human called Baltar betrays humanity and the Cylons wipe out the Twelve Colonies and most of their space-faring ships, the Colonial Fleet, in a nuclear attack that leaves their planets uninhabitable. The only surviving vessel from the Fleet is the Battlestar Galactica, along with a ragtag collection of other space vessels. So the human survivors travel across the universe led by Commander Adama of the Galactica, looking for the legendary 13th colony, Earth, to make it their new home.
With such a fascinating setup, it’s no surprise that Battlestar Galactica (1978) has had several sequels, spinoffs, and remakes: the short-lived sequel series Galactica 1980, which was hampered by a lack of most of the original stars; the very successful 2003-...

First announced as being in development at NBCUniversal’s streamer Peacock in 2019, the Battlestar Galactica reimagening previously had Michael Lesslie attached to write and executive produce.
A new take on the classic IP, the latest incarnation is executive produced by Simonds as well as Esmail Corp’s Sam Esmail and Chad Hamilton. UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

Survivor’s Inaugural Winner Richard Hatch The name Richard Hatch will forever be etched in Survivor history as its first-ever winner. But what has happened since he outwitted, outplayed, and outlasted his peers on Survivor: Borneo? Well, life’s been quite the rollercoaster for Hatch. His bold personality, including his choice to wander around camp in the buff, certainly left an impression. However, post-Survivor life brought him legal woes; in 2005, he faced tax evasion charges for not paying taxes on his $1 million prize. This led to a stint in jail from 2006 to 2009, and after failing to pay again,...

The premise of Glen A. Larson's 1978 sci-fi series "Battlestar Galactica" was high-concept and complex. It took place far from Earth, at the end of humanity's millennium-long war with a species of robots called the Cylons. The Cylons themselves were built by a long-extinct race of humanoid reptiles, and they seem poised to offer the same fate to humankind. Feeling that the writing was on the wall, a human named Count Baltar (John Colicos) betrayed humanity and sided with the Cylons, putting the robots hot on the trail of the Battlestar Galactica, a massive starship carrying most of the galaxy's last-known humans. Their goal is to find a long-lost "thirteenth tribe," a human colony that was said to have settled on a distant planet called Earth.

The collective gasp heard on August 23, 2000 was 51 million people learning that Survivor’s first jury just awarded the game’s first villain $1 million. One of the people who’d cast the deciding vote in Richard Hatch’s favor, Sue Hawk, had just called him “an arrogant, pompous, human being,” and in another of the Survivor finale’s iconic moments, referred to him to as a snake “who knowingly went after prey.”
Richard Hatch’s journey to that million dollars — and to becoming competition reality TV’s first villain, a snake willing to eat whatever was in its path — began the first day of Survivor: Borneo. After the tribe reached their beach, exhausted from actually paddling in, he perched himself on a tree branch, sitting physically and metaphorically above everyone else, and watching the other seven players’ cross-talk about building a shelter.

This article contains spoilers for Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica.
When future television historians are asked to build the Mount Rushmore of fictional adventures through the galaxy, there is certainly room for debate. Rest assured though, there is a place for Star Trek and even a franchise many didn’t think would make it, Battlestar Galactica.
When Battlestar was released on ABC in 1978, it was almost a decade since Gene Roddenberry’s perennial trek had aired, failed, and was resurrected because of fan support. Since its inception, Star Trek was a survivor, and one of its strengths was always reinvention. This led to feature films, a renaissance of the property in the late ‘80s, and a recent reinvention and “refuel” treatment in the past few years.
Galactica, meanwhile, went from cult classic to mainstream critical success with its reboot in the early 2000s. Yet, that wasn’t the only reinvention in that franchise of note.

Some Survivor contestants will stop at nothing in their attempt to win the game. Things can get pretty ugly as castaways fight to be the last one standing in the popular CBS reality series. So, perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a few cast members have bent – or broken – the rules back in the real world. After returning home, these six Survivor players have found themselves on the wrong side of the law.

The cultural juggernaut that is Survivor undeniably changed American television. The CBS competitive reality show had precursors, but nothing compared to the addictive and often controversial formula presented in Survivor: Borneo in 2000. And no one person was a bigger part of causing that paradigm shift in TV history than Season 1 winner Richard Hatch.
He went above and beyond the producers’ wildest dreams of what the show could be. He shocked viewers with his manipulative and often downright odd behavior. It went so far, the producers wondered if the man who would solidify Survivor into a megahit franchise was actually on the path to ruining their show.

The “reality” portion of reality television has been debated over the years. Some shows are painstakingly obviously fake, while others feel like they are as objective as any Hollywood production can be. And Survivor is a show that leans more toward the latter. Most elements of the CBS reality competition series feel real (even though some fans argue otherwise), but there is one rehearsed aspect of Survivor.

With over 43 seasons of Survivor, it’s difficult to choose which ones stand out the most. There have been numerous entertaining seasons full of impressive gameplay, dynamic casts, and shocking Tribal Councils that have left us with our jaws on the floor. Including Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X on our list of the top five Survivor seasons might be a controversial pick, but we wholeheartedly stand by it.
Adam Klein is one of the most underrated winners (aside from Vecepia Towery). Including Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X on our list of the top five Survivor seasons might be a controversial pick, but we wholeheartedly stand by it.

Created in 1978 by Glen A. Larson, the original Battlestar Galactica featured a great cast. Though the show only ran for a single season, the original series of Battlestar Galactica earned two Primetime Emmys and a People’s Choice Award in 1979 after its short run.
It also laid the groundwork for the 2004 reboot starring Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell, which was similarly critically acclaimed and remains one of the most beloved sci-fi series in TV history.

If you’re a longtime “Survivor” fan who frequently finds yourself reminiscing about the older seasons, you’re not alone. Now even host Jeff Probst is getting nostalgic. During the November 30 episode of “Survivor 43,” the Top 7 castaways competed in a classic immunity challenge in which they each had to hold their breath under a steel grate in the ocean as the high tide rolled in. Midway through the competition, Probst lamented, “That water is rising. Immunity on the line. This is old school ‘Survivor,’ back when we inflicted a little more pain. Nice to revisit some of our old haunts.”
On cue, a portion of Russ Landau‘s classic theme song from “Survivor” Season 1 was heard in the background, a perfect callback for diehard viewers of CBS’s reality TV show. Re-watch the original opening titles sequence below.

A different actor would've played Lee Adama on the reimagined "Battlestar Galactica" had Jamie Bamber listened to his gut. Lee is one of the series' main characters, the son of Commander William Adama (Edward James Olmos) and a reimagined version of the original series hero Apollo (Richard Hatch) — "Apollo" is simply Lee's pilot callsign rather his given name.
Bamber hasn't had the most illustrious career since "Galactica" ended; the fantasy series "17th Precinct," which reunited him with co-stars James Callis and Tricia Helfer and co-creator Ron Moore, never went past the pilot. But that's not a reflection on his acting...

To some subset of the audience of the 2000 reality show “The Real World: New Orleans,” Danny Roberts was the biggest celebrity on TV.
Roberts was the gay cast member on a TV franchise that placed a premium on frankness, openness, and unpracticed charm. The first episode of Roberts’ season saw him gradually and haltingly coming out to the six housemates producers had arranged for him to live with for months, at one point announcing he was gay in French so as to avoid doing so in English. Later on, his romance with a U.S. servicemember whose face had to be blurred in accordance with the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy, was both tender and intriguing. Not immune to leaning into the inherent drama of being 22 and gorgeous and in love, Danny was a star. And he shone all the more brightly for the lack of others like him on TV.

Twenty-one years after “Survivor” Season 1 became a ratings juggernaut for CBS, runner-up Kelly Wiglesworth is speaking out about fan-fave castaway Rudy Boesch. Rudy passed away in 2019 at age 91 following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. When EW recently asked Kelly about her biggest “Survivor” regret, she responded simply by saying, “Not giving the win to Rudy.”
Let’s recap. In Borneo’s final immunity challenge (watch above), Kelly, Rudy and Richard Hatch were tasked with holding their hands on the immunity idol for as long as they could. Richard voluntarily gave up after two and a half hours, and then Rudy accidentally let go after the four-hour mark, resulting in a victory for the then-22-year-old river guide. Kelly then solely got to choose whom to eliminate (Rudy) and whom to bring to the final two (Richard). At the final tribal council, the jury voted Richard as the winner of...

Can you believe it’s been 20 years since CBS censors had to pixelate Richard Hatch‘s naked body on “Survivor: Borneo”? The popular castaway walked around in his “birthday suit” to celebrate his 39th bday on the ninth episode of that iconic first season, which aired July 26, 2000. Watch the “Survivor” flashback video above. It’s since become one of the most well-known and controversial moments throughout the reality TV show’s 40 seasons, particularly in the wake of the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment.
There were only eight castaways left in the merged Rattana tribe when Richard celebrated his birthday sans clothing: original Tagi members Richard, Kelly Wiglesworth, Rudy Boesch, Susan Hawk and Sean Kenniff and original Pagong members Jenna Lewis, Gervase Peterson and Colleen Haskell. Richard of course would eventually go on to win the show’s first-ever $1 million check (see the winners list).

Gervase Peterson urges ‘Survivor’ to be ‘more equally diverse,’ both on-screen and behind the scenes
This summer marks the 20th anniversary of “Survivor” premiering on CBS, and Gervase Peterson is now speaking out about his experience. “I honestly don’t have any regrets” about either of the two times he played, he tells EW.com. This fan-fave original castaway came in seventh place in “Borneo” (2000) and third place in “Blood vs. Water” (2013). “It changed my life, and I have loved every minute of playing it.” Gervase also opens up about what he’d change about the long-running reality TV show, proclaiming, “I would make ‘Survivor’ more equally diverse.”
He continues, “For years, it was a standard of one Black man and one Black woman. That’s just terrible. Also, more diversity in casting and production. This would help in a more diverse cast and the telling of the diverse cast stories and not labeling them with negative stereotypes. It’s been long overdue.” Over the first 40 seasons of “Survivor,...

Original “Survivor” castaway Jenna Lewis didn’t hold back when asked by EW.com if she would ever want to play again. “F— Yes!” she exclaimed. Jenna appeared on “Borneo” (Season 1) and “All Stars” (Season 8), but hasn’t been seen since, despite repeatedly being on producers’ shortlists over the past 16 years. “I have been contacted so many times, it’s like CBS is my own personal d— tease,” she joked. “This last time I had signed over 100 pages of documents and gone for shots, and started the whole mental prep. Just do it already, Mark [Burnett] and [Jeff] Probst. Third time’s a charm.”
The concept of watching “Survivor” on TV now is starting to leave a bad taste in her mouth. Jenna readily admitted, “I am still butt-hurt at how many times Survivor Casting has called and had me on stand-by for a season, or had me in the ‘finals’ of casting,...

May 31, 2020 marked the 20-year anniversary of when a little show called “Survivor” first premiered on television. To mark the occasion, Sonja Christopher, now age 83, is breaking her silence on what it meant to be the first person ever voted off of CBS’s reality TV show. “Oh my God, what an experience!” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I’m so fortunate to have had it. And I’ve learned lessons about how to treat it, regard it, live with it, and go with the flow.” Watch a video retrospective of Sonja’s “Survivor” journey below.
As it turns out, Sonja is still a fan of the show after two decades and has some choice words for the winner of Season 40, Tony Vlachos. “He was such a loose cannon, it seemed,” she declared. “And his hiding in the tree almost seemed laughable. But it turns out apparently it worked for him!” She...

Outwit. Outplay. Outlast. After 40 seasons and 20 years, Survivor has managed to do all three of those when it comes to dominating reality TV, becoming one of the genre's most iconic and successful series of all-time. The CBS reality hit premiered on May 31, 2000, with a simple concept: what if Castaway and Lord of the Flies had a baby that became a reality competition series? The first season, set in Borneo, became one of TV's biggest pop culture phenomenons, thanks in large part to the large personalities, the politicking and one of the most polarizing winners and reality TV stars in Richard Hatch. Since 2000, Survivor has managed to stay at the top of its game, with Jeff Probst going from...

The new Battlestar Galactica comes from Mr Robot and Homecoming exec producer Sam Esmail, who struck a big overall deal with NBCU’s Universal Content Productions last year. It is produced by Esmail Corp and Ucp, with Esmail and Chad Hamilton also exec producing.

Jeff Probst: Nude contestants aren’t allowed on ‘Survivor’ anymore because the ‘culture’ has changed
In past seasons of CBS’s long-running reality TV show “Survivor,” contestants were often seen walking around nude, including most notably Richard Hatch, the winner of Season 1 (“Borneo”) and a controversial figure in Season 8 (“All-Stars”). However, Jeff Probst noted at a recent event that since the “culture” has changed, “Today it wouldn’t get past our producers for half of a second.”
As the four-time Emmy-winning host explained, “It speaks to the fact that ‘Survivor’ is always of the moment because it’s fresh. Not withstanding returning players, you typically have new people playing and whatever is happening in the culture is what’s happening.” In other words, “Survivor” has evolved, so if you want to see pixelated bodies go watch “Naked and Afraid.”

Two of your favorite reality TV shows were hit with controversies recently, but the way the networks handled them were vastly different. On “Survivor” Season 39, a castaway named Dan Spilo was removed from CBS’s long-running competition series due to repeated instances of inappropriate touching. On “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 12, a queen known as Sherry Pie was disqualified from winning when VH1 discovered after the fact that she was a catfish who engaged in sexual misconduct.
In the case of “Survivor,” Dan’s story was still told from beginning to end when it aired last fall, up until the moment he was kicked to the curb off-camera. But on “Drag Race,” which is currently airing on Friday nights, Sherry Pie has been essentially edited out of every challenge, work room discussion and private one-on-one confessional. Why the different approaches?

Right now, the returning castaway who has risen to every challenge facing her so far on “Survivor: Winners at War” is Natalie Anderson (see above), the first player to be banished to the Edge of Extinction. When the member of the blue Sele tribe first arrived on the then-deserted isle, she found a hidden immunity idol that was good for three tribal councils at the very tippy-top of a steep mountain path — a testament to her strength, smarts and agility. She sent it to Sandra Diaz-Twine of the blue Dakal tribe, who purchased it with a fire token (a kind of currency this season).
Natalie also showed off her smarts after she figured out that an advantage was hidden in the island’s water well long after Amber Mariano, the second player to decide to wait out her fate on the Edge of Extinction, walked away from it. Natalie sent...

“Survivor” may have its highs and lows, but those highs keep fans coming back for more. Who could have known in the summer of 2000 that a reality show about strangers stranded on an island would become one of the most enduring franchises in television history? Fans were first bewitched by that first season, later titled “Survivor: Borneo,” with its cast of colorful characters like Richard Hatch, Rudy Boesch and Sue Hawk. The series became a smash hit and go on to produce 40 seasons, two per year. Above, tour our photos of the 12 best “Survivor” seasons ranked from worst to best. (We’ll update it again after “Survivor: Winners at War” concludes in May 2020.)

“Survivor: Winners at War” may purport to decide the best winner of all time, but 18 former champions could plausibly dispute that. While Season 40 does have “Survivor” legends like Rob Mariano, Parvati Shallow and Sandra Diaz-Twine, it does not include every past winner. For instance, the first two winners, Richard Hatch and Tina Wesson, are missing from the “Winners at War” cast despite being from two of the most-watched seasons in the show’s history. It was established in the very first season of “Survivor” in 2000 that playing the game as a winking devil was a viable way to win. Richard Hatch made an alliance and voted out everyone not in that alliance, which was considered taboo at a time when viewers and Richard’s fellow castaways were still trying to figure out the true nature of the show. He also employed a cocky attitude, which naturally led to other villainous winners playing the game with swagger. That was certainly true of Brian Heidik in “Survivor: Thailand” and Todd Herzog in “Survivor: China,” who played their respective castmates like a fiddle. Tour our “Survivor” gallery above featuring nine of the most diabolical winners in the show’s history.

Survivor‘s Winners at War season is off and running — and though the all-champs spectacular couldn’t possibly have been more anticipated, there’s one element that seems to have harshed fans’ mellow: the return of the highly contended Edge of Extinction twist.
