Cass Warner, filmmaker, author and granddaughter of Harry Warner, co-founder of Warner Bros., has died. She was 76.
Her death was announced by her son and Yellowstone actor Cole Hauser on his Instagram page. “Her kindness, love, humor and amazing spirit will be missed by not only my family but the world. You have touched so many,” he wrote.
Cass’ grandfather, Harry Warner, was the eldest Warner brother, a Polish immigrant who co-founded the studio in 1923 after jumping into the early days of movie mania in 1905 with brothers Sam, Albert and Jack. The foursome created a cinematic powerhouse, a dream factory that was the social conscience of Hollywood, one that churned out timely and topical films about the Great Depression, the rise of fascism, the Red Scare and more.
Harry’s daughter, Betty Warner Sheinbaum, wrote of her father as “a very serious man. He was the company’s conscience and driving force.

Last week, Melody Thomas Scott celebrated 45 years since she began portraying the role of Nikki Newman on “The Young and the Restless.” In tribute to her staying power, the show recently had several cast members, specifically of the Newman variety, donning t-shirts featuring all the iconic looks Scott has had from the more than four decades she’s played the character.
In a video message posted to the show’s Instagram account last week, Joshua Morrow, who plays Scott’s on-screen son Nicholas Newman, said, “To my mama, Melody Thomas Scott, celebrating a huge, huge, huge anniversary. An absolute icon on this show. What better way to celebrate you than with these incredible T-shirts, looking at all your best looks. We love you, the whole world loves you, and you deserve everything. Love you, Mama.”

Yellowstone leading man Cole Hauser hasn’t been sitting idle during the actors’ strike. On the contrary, on August 9, he revealed that he had, ahem, let rip a new side hustle, the Free Rein Coffee Company. “I’ve grown up around cowboys my whole life,” the Santa Barbara, Calif., native said on Instagram. “And I can tell you, there’s nobody on earth who works harder.”

If you’re a film fanatic, one book that’s absolutely worth checking out is Quentin Tarantino’s Cinema Speculation (buy it here). On the brilliant Video Archives podcast (which you really should be listening to), Tarantino downplays the autobiographical nature of the book, which is mostly about his reactions to the films that were seminal to him as a child of the seventies. But, along with the film analysis, there’s a lot of interesting, autobiographical material that adds up to a nostalgic depiction of a young film fan coming of age. For a lot of us, it’s tough not to relate.
With that in mind, Tarantino’s formative films are likely different than the ones from those of us who grew up a generation or so later, but every single movie that he mentions is well worth seeking out. Here are five to get started with:

“Panama,” the latest offering from The Mel Gibson Movie of the Month Club, is the sort of instantly disposable action-thriller that wears its cynicism on its sleeve while laboring to grab attention with quick-cut visuals. Those combine with more gratuitous nudity than you can shake a stick at — without, it should be noted, any sticks — to goose a narrative that is tediously predictable when not borderline incoherent. It is notable primarily for the presence of Cole Hauser, star of TV’s phenomenally popular “Yellowstone,” who earns his top billing by doing most of the heavy lifting for his sporadically glimpsed but frequently heard co-star.
In terms of facilitating a transition from television to features, “Panama” may do more for Hauser than, say, “Macho Callahan” ever did for David Janssen. Hauser fully commits to his role as Becker, an ex-Marine who free-lances for the CIA, using his macho charm, intimidating snarl,...

During his 1980s and ’90s heyday as a frightfully prolific star of blood-and-thunder direct-to-video fare, Wings Hauser once aptly described his target audience as “the microwave-burrito guys at 2 a.m. with a beer in their hands” — and, presumably, a Vcr remote switch nearby. Nowadays, that audience can digitally stream their B-movies of choice. But while the favored cuisine of these undiscriminating customers might have changed, the cinematic product they consume remains pretty much the same, albeit enhanced by better production values and, with all due respect to Mr. Hauser, superior star power.
All of which brings us to “WarHunt,” a modestly diverting mashup of WWII actioner and horror thriller that would not have been out of place on a New Release shelf at Blockbuster not so terribly long ago. Wait, scratch that: It would have been a standout on the shelf, if only when compared to the many lesser titles stocked around it.

Ok, a quick show of hands: How many of you actually knew there was a movie titled “I Am Vengeance” released in 2018? Wow, that many? Well, that’s probably why we now have a sequel, “I Am Vengeance: Retaliation,” even though it isn’t likely to reach beyond the niche audience of undiscriminating action fans who eagerly viewed its predecessor on digital and home video platforms.
Much like the original 2018 opus, “Retaliation” plays like a throwback to the era when similar low-budget fare routinely strained shelves at Blockbuster outlets, and provided gainful employment for such cult faves as Jeff Speakman, Gary Busey, Cynthia Rothrock and direct-to-video icon Wings Hauser. Here, the main attraction is Stu Bennett (aka WWE wrestler Wade Barrett), a taciturn tough customer who once again inhabits the lead role of John Gold, a British special forces soldier turned freelance mercenary turned self-employed vengeance seeker.

While it may not be a Friday, Tuesday the 13th does have a bit of a nice ring to it, too, which makes it a perfect day to add some great genre Blu-rays and DVDs to your home entertainment collections. Scream Factory is doing the (dark) lord’s work yet again this week with their Collector’s Edition of Vice Squad (which I cannot wait to check out) as well as their stunning Steelbooks for both Galaxy of Terror and Forbidden World.

Other notable releases for August 13th include Avengers: Endgame, The Velocipastor (ahead of its Blu-ray release on September 17th), A Dark Place, Devil Music,...

Out on August 13 in North America from Scream Factory comes Gary Sherman's 1982 film Vice Squad. Filmed on the streets of Los Angeles, Sherman directs Season Hubley as Princess, a prostitute who wants a better life for herself and her daughter. However, there's a sicko on the loose (like any day or night in L.A.), and Gary Swanson, plays Tom Walsh, a cop that wants to nab Ramrod, a vicious pimp, for his crimes against women. Walsh ropes in Princess as bait, and we're off to the races. Of course, there are twists and turns, and perversions of justice, so Ramrod's released...

As Scream Factory continues to diversify their slate of releases — most recently striking a licensing deal with Warner Bros. at long last, resulting in more John Carpenter titles joining the lineup — one of the exciting parts of the company continues to be their commitment to giving smaller, lesser-known catalogue titles the HD treatment. They’re not always great, but they’re always worth checking out.

Scream Factory brings an under-appreciated horror anthology to Collector’s Edition Blu-ray.
Great horror anthologies are hard to come by these days, but luckily there are still plenty to be rediscovered thanks to home video labels like Scream Factory. 1995’s Tales from the Hood is a highly entertaining blend of horror and social commentary from director Rusty Cundieff (who co-wrote alongside Darin Scott who also co-wrote an earlier horror anthology From a Whisper to a Scream), and it’s now found a new home on Blu-ray. As all lovers of crime, suspense thriller, war, western, horror and science fiction films know, creating a truly great cinematic villain is no easy task. When it happens, it’s virtually impossible to forget that character.
We’ll now take a look at the greatest film villains of the 1980’s.
The criteria for this article is the same as my previous article Cinema’s Greatest Villains: The 1970’s: the villains must be from live-action films-no animated features-and must pose some type of direct or indirect lethal threat. The villains can be either individuals or small groups that act as one unit.
The villains must be human or human in appearance, so no shape-shifting alien from John Carpenter’s amazing 1982 The Thing, no Aliens from James Cameron’s classic 1986 sequel and no Predator from John McTiernan’s beloved 1987 film of the same name.
Also, individuals that are the central protagonists/antiheroes...

“Make a move, and make my day!”
If you think that line was said by Clint Eastwood in one of his Dirty Harry films, you’d be mistaken. It was uttered in 1982, the year before Sudden Impact, in director Gary Sherman’s sensationally sleazy Vice Squad, a sordid but exciting look at life on the seedy strip of Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard when the sun goes down. The guys at Destroy The Brain.com usually feature horror fare at their monthly Late Night Grindhouse midnight series, but this weekend’s offering is indeed Vice Squad, a crime film more in line with a pair of Linda Blair movies (Chained Heat and Savage Streets) they showed last year (appropriate since Vice Squad star Wings Hauser dated Linda Blair for several years).

After showing a classic like Suspiria, we like to follow up with a film that not too many people might be aware of. The people that have seen the film have never forgotten it. Wings Hauser pulls in an iconic performance that put him on the map. Vice Squad was directed by Gary Sherman who a year prior collaborated with the creators of Alien to direct Dead & Buried.
Vice Squad is one of the products of grindhouse cinema in its last decade. It needs to be seen to be believed. Who’s hungry? “The Hunger Games” proceeded to predictably beat the stuffing out of the box office, scoring $155 million, the third highest opening weekend in history, and highest for a non-sequel. The fan base came out in full force, no doubt, but so did the normals, as the books don’t (yet) have nearly the support of “Harry Potter” or “Twilight.” But make no mistake, this property had a similar groundswell of opinion, including an ad blitz and news and web coverage suggesting this was the “good” version of those pre-existing properties. Within three days, Lionsgate has their highest grossing domestic release of all time, and Hollywood’s strongest new franchise. Because everyone secretly loves child murder.
Fans were notably pleased, as the picture registered an ‘A’ Cinemascore, which shifted to an ‘A+’ for younger demographics. While there’s no full demo breakdown, it’s likely much of this audience were males,...

It's no secret that the Alamo Drafthouse is the best theater chain in the country. Sure, it's small, but the passion they have to create the perfect environment to watch a movie is unparalleled. Case in point, their hugely popular No Texting [1] public service announcements, incredible in-theater food selection, stunning repertory screenings and so much more. As the new year begins, the entire staff of the Drafthouse voted on their favorite films of 2011 and selected /Film as the outlet to exclusively premiere their list. It's extremely eclectic (The Muppets, Beginners and 13 Assassin all made the cut) but you'd be hard pressed to find a better cross section of the best 2011 had to offer. Check it out after the jump. Here's the explanation of the list and how it came together. Members of the Alamo Drafthouse team each submitted their Top 10 films of 2011, which were then aggregated into one master list of spectacular cinema.

7 Nights of Darkness
In 2008 six reality television show contestants spent seven nights in an abandoned and haunted asylum. The show never aired but an editor for the network was able to piece together some footage. The prize for staying all seven nights was a share of one million dollars that was to be split amongst any contestants that didn’t leave. No prize money was ever awarded.

Since I’m heading down to Austin for Fantastic Fest in less than a week, I thought I would write up a post with some of my recommendations from last year’s festival. Bonus-Fantastic Fest announced over the weekend that it has opened up an official shop on iTunes, making it even easier to access some of the best offerings from past festivals. The new shop features selections from 2005-2010, and you can rent or buy the titles. Film offerings include Sin City, Wolf Creek, Bug, The Host, Pan’s Labyrinth, There Will Be Blood, Trick ‘R Treat, The Human Centipede, 13 Assassins, Monsters and many more. Visit the Fantastic Fest iTunes page to browse the full selection. Many of the films from last year’s festival are also now available via Netflix or DVD, so you can watch them now. Keep in mind that most of these are very low budget,...

I was drawn to the VHS copy of softcore porn veteran Gregory Dark’s 1990 sci-fi thriller “Street Asylum” because of the picture of G. Gordon Liddy as a cyborg on the cover. Sadly, this scene does not appear anywhere in the film, a fact which sadden me to no end. Would I have purchased the flick had I known Liddy would not appear as some sort of half-man, half-robot? Probably not, though I’m certainly glad I did. “Street Asylum” follows the adventures of a Arliss Ryder (Wings Hauser), a cop who finds himself being recruited into a division of the police force known as Strike Squad after he’s injured in the line of duty. What our hero doesn’t realize, of course, is that someone is playing a deadly game, one that involves the lives of those dedicated officers who would love nothing more than to cleanse the streets of crime.

Rubber Directed by: Quentin Dupieux Written by: Quentin Dupieux Starring: Stephen Spinella, Roxane Mesquida, Jack Plotnick and Wings Hauser Rubber is one of the most unique movies I have ever seen, a film that on the surface looks simple and dull but the final product has characters, layers, and laughter. We follow a rubber tire that kills anything in its path by telekinetically blowing it up. Sound ridiculous? In the first five minutes the point is made clear with a monologue from Lieutenant Chad (Stephen Spinella) who comes out of the trunk of a car talking about why certain events happen or don't happen in a select few movies. He refers to Steven Spielberg's E.T.: Extra Terrestrial and Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre among other films. The scene basically conveys that the film you are about to see is extremely self aware and wacky for reasons unexplained.

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
The Green Lantern – Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard
Mr. Popper’s Penguins – Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Angela Lansbury
Movie of the Week
The Green Lantern
The Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard
The Plot: A test pilot (Reynolds) is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.
The Buzz: Just slightly to the right of the “kill me now” column (see Mr. Popper’s Penguins) lies DC’s feeble attempt to answer Marvel’s mighty Thor. I am stupefied at how nerdy Reynolds looks throughout all of The Green Lantern’s marketing efforts. I can’t get over it really, and I’ve never really enjoyed Reynolds at all. Blake Lively is lovely and Peter Sarsgaard is a solid heavyweight, but I just don’t...

Sun City - What are you going to when it comes time to retire? Do you really have enough money saved up to last you for the rest of your life? Can you hold out till Willard Scott puts you on the Smuckers jar and wishes you a happy 100th? Will you really be enjoying the good life with round the clock sponge baths from young orderlies? Have you done the math to figure out how much it’ll cost for a day at a retirement community in 20 years? Can your 401K hold out?
Odds are the answer is a resounding, “Maybe?”
The golden years require platinum reserves. With talk that Medicare is about to be destroyed, your budget for health insurance is about to go completely out of control. When is the last time Blue Cross hyped individual policies for people hitting 90? Even the most frugal of senior citizens...

As mentioned before, there were so many good films to choose from at the Phoenix Film Festival, dubbed the friendliest film festival to independent filmmakers, that it was extremely hard to catch them all. There are four specific films I will attempt to get screeners of and give a review later next week. From what I’ve heard, you’ll want to hear about them.
Unfortunately, I missed the much talked about documentaries, “Thespians” and “Wild Horse, Wild Ride”. “Thespians” is an involving tale of four acting troupes competing in the largest high school competition in the world and I heard that it did bring some grown men to tears.

Rubber, the first killer tire movie we have ever encountered, is coming to Blu-ray and Rubber on June 7 from Magnet Video
A new kind of terror rolls down the road in Rubber.
The comedy horror film turns on Robert, a seemingly run-of-the-mill that comes to life and discover that he has telepathic powers that enable him to decimate whatever he wants a la David Cronenberg’s Scanners. Wreaking havoc on lost items and small desert creatures for a time, Robert rolls on down the road and quickly moves up to humans. Prompting many a mortal head to explode as he sets out on a killing spree across the winding desert highways, Robert must be stopped!!

Photo: Magnet Releasing The idea of a tire that falls in love with a girl and uses telekinetic powers to blow up the heads of anyone that gets in his way is a unique idea for a film if I've ever heard one. Add to that his name is Robert and he also likes to watch television and you're just giving me more reasons to watch. And, I guess, as far as movies about telekinetic tires go, Rubber it's as much half-bad as it is half-good.
The problem, and why I'm not jumping up and down and telling you to rush to your cable box and order this one, is this is a story without much possibility. It does, however, extend beyond the opening sentence of this review, which is a blessing... and a curse.

Wings Hauser, people. Max Winkler hit the festivals hard with Ceremony, his coming of age story starring Michael Angarano and Uma Thurman. Now it’s seeing a limited release, and he’s stopped by to discuss the benefits of getting your heart broken and the wrong way to crash a party. Quentin Dupieux’s newest feature about a rogue tire-turned-serial killer — and obsessed stalker — is everything cinema should be but more often is not.
A tire?
Yes. A tire. All this 82-minute powerhouse asks of its audience is to pay strict attention and to keep an open mind.
“Rubber” is the story of a film director/lieutenant, dressed as a small-town sheriff, who is shooting a movie in the desert. His crew and cast consist of a bootlicking production assistant/accountant and several actors portraying deputies. A large audience, one of whom is wheelchair-bound, is given binoculars and told to stand at the top of a hill and await the show.
In the meantime, a tire arises on its own, falters and then steadies itself as it proceeds along a desert road.

I still don't know quite how I feel about Quentin Dupieux's horror/comedy film 'Rubber'. Yes, it's about a killer tire. I haven't seen it yet, so the jury is still out. Though from the trailer (below), it looks to be pretty bitchin'.
I am certainly feeling a tingling sense of hope as I view the new poster for the flick. Bloody Corpses? Hell yeah. You can't go wrong with an illustration that features carnage like that. You can see it below.
The movie is available via some VOD cable carriers and will be released in select theaters on br April 1st. Go 'Rubber' go!
The film stars Thomas F. Duffy, Hayley Homes, Wings Hauser, Tara Jean O'Brien, Haley Ramm, David Bowe, Ethan Cohn, Pete Dicecco and Remy Thorne.

One of the highlights of this years Glasgow FrightFest, Rubber is a true once in a lifetime viewing experience, the film is both a study on film and its relationship with the audience, and an homage to cinematic classic like Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy, Psycho etc., and all the while it’s a damn fine “monster” movie of Tromatic proportions!
Written and directed by Quentin Dupieux and stars Stephen Spinella, Roxane Mesquida, Jack Plotnick and Wings Hauser, Rubber comes to DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on April 11th, courtesy of Optimum Releasing – who have released, via Empire, the official UK one-sheet poster for the film:
Rubber is the story of Robert, an inanimate tire that has been abandoned in the desert, and suddenly and inexplicably comes to life. As Robert roams the bleak landscape, he discovers that he possesses terrifying telepathic powers that give him the ability to...
