Now that the hit Hulu prequel Prey has proven there’s some hunt left in the Predator franchise, Awfully Good Movies is taking on the previous entry from 2018 that forced it to reboot in the first place: Shane Black’s The Predator!
The same year Shane Black co-starred as the joke cracking Rick Hawkins in the original Predator, his script for Lethal Weapon became as big a hit as Predator was and the rest was history. But 31 years later, after Black came back as a director with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man 3, 20th Century Fox asked Black to return behind the camera and make the Predator sequel to end them all…which, unfortunately, it nearly did. Sure, having the story focus on a ragtag group of Ptsd afflicted veterans led by Boyd Holbrook who must save the earth from two visiting Predators sounds like a promising setup,...

What would it take to overpower the world’s toughest special forces soldiers? A hunter from out of this world, of course.
That’s the spark that ignited Predator (1987), one of the all-time great sci-fi action adventures. Released 35 years ago today, the film’s legacy is now secure: it has spawned three direct sequels and an upcoming prequel, plus two Alien Vs. Predator spin-off movies, along with a variety of comic book series, extremely cool action figures, and assorted other merchandise unusual for a gritty R-rated picture. Naturally we at Tfh felt it was high time to reflect on the original classic.
Cigar-chomping Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger at his most ‘roided-out) and his crew of military mercenaries are recruited by his former Vietnam War comrade Al Dillon (Carl Weathers), now a CIA agent, to purportedly save foreign government officials, taken hostage by a team of guerrilla revolutionaries in a Central American jungle.

The game is afoot.
And we’re not talking about an edge-of-your-seat murder mystery typically associated with Sherlock Holmes, but the full-blown alien mayhem that’s coming our way thanks to The Predator.
Helmed by writer-director Shane Black, who knows a thing or two about the galaxy’s greatest hunter after his turn in John McTiernan’s cult classic (Black played Rick Hawkins opposite the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers), The Predator shifts the sci-fi action to suburbia where a posse of Predators begin scouring the streets in search of some ancient artifact.
What they find, however, is something entirely new, after last month’s gruesome trailer revealed the über-Predator, a being that’s clearly been stitched together in some government laboratory. So it seems the two races have a common enemy, and in honor of The Predator‘s September release, Empire Magazine has dropped a camouflage cover...

Following yesterday's news that Game of Thrones star Alfie Allen has joined the growing cast The Predator, another big name has now been linked to the Shane Black film.
According to THR, Yvonne Strahovski is in "final negotiations" to play the mother of Jacob Tremblay's character in The Predator. Tremblay's character is described as "a troubled boy who is accidentally drawn into the conflict with the fierce alien creatures" due to his mother's ex-husband, portrayed by Boyd Holbrook.
Should Strahovski's deal be finalized, she would join a cast that, in addition to the aforementioned Allen, Tremblay, and Holbrook, includes Sterling K. Brown, Olivia Munn, Keegan-Michael Key, and Thomas Jane, most of whom were featured in a cast photo unveiled by Black.

Shane Black celebrated the start of filming on The Predator yesterday by unveiling a new cast photo, but as he mentioned in his Tweet, the image only features a "partial cast," with Thomas Jane in talks to appear in the film, and now a new addition, Alfie Allen, coming on board.

Between Narcos, Morgan, and the upcoming Logan, Boyd Holbrook has been staying busy as of late, but perhaps his biggest role is yet to come in Shane Black's The Predator, which the actor recently shed some light on, including how it is not a sequel.
Speaking with We Got This Covered, Holbrook insisted that The Predator is something new rather than a sequel:
"It’s not a sequel; Shane Black has made something totally new, somehow keeping within the realm of Predator [while also being] absolutely new in terms of the story that we’re talking about today, and rooted in something real."
There has also been some speculation that Arnold Schwarzenegger could reprise his role as Dutch from the original Predator in the new movie, but Holbrook doesn't believe that will be the case:
"I don’t think you’re going to see [Arnold] Schwarzenegger. It would kind of make it a gimmick.

With production expected to begin this February in Vancouver, the cast of Shane Black’s The Predator is coming together with some truly talented performers. The latest addition to the cast is certainly no exception, as it’s been revealed that Jacob Tremblay, perhaps best known for his stunning turn opposite Brie Larson in Room, has joined the sci-fi film’s ranks.
The news of Tremblay’s casting comes from THR, who reveals that the actor is set to portray the bullied, autistic son of Boyd Holbrook’s ex-Marine character. Tremblay’s role will also play a pivotal part in his dad’s fight against the Predators thanks to his quick learning of and expert grasp on languages.
In addition to Tremblay and Holbrook, The Predator cast also includes Keegan-Michael Key, Trevante Rhodes, Sterling K. Brown, and Olivia Munn, with Thomas Jane in discussions to also appear in the film.

It’s not yet know what role Jane would play in the film, which is expected to begin shooting in Vancouver this February, but we’ll keep Daily Dead readers updated on further details as they are revealed.
Should he join the movie’s ranks, Jane would join a cast that is slated to include Boyd Holbrook, Keegan-Michael Key, Trevante Rhodes, Sterling K. Brown, and Olivia Munn.
The Predator is scheduled for a February 9th, 2018 theatrical release from 20th Century Fox.

One day after it was reported that Trevante Rhodes will co-star in The Predator, it has now been revealed that Keegan-Michael Key could also be joining the cast of the anticipated action horror film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Keegan-Michael Key is in "final negotiations" to play a key role in The Predator. If the deal should be finalized, Key would portray a man who helps the ex-Marine characters (played by Rhodes and Boyd Holbrook) fight off "the creatures" (implying that there will be more than one Predator on hand).
In addition to Rhodes and Holbrook, The Predator cast also includes Olivia Munn as a scientist. The setting for the film is rumored to be the suburbs, which would make an unconventional battlefield for some of the galaxy's most lethal hunters.
Filming is slated to begin this winter on The Predator, which is scheduled for a February 9th, 2018 theatrical release from 20th Century Fox.

It looks like Boyd Holbrook might have some company in Shane Black's new Predator movie. Just a few weeks after it was reported that Holbrook is in talks to star in The Predator, it's now been revealed by THR that Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse, Deliver Us From Evil) is also in discussions to join the movie's ranks.
According to THR, should Munn join the cast of The Predator, she would play a "scientist opposite Holbrook’s Special Forces commando." While the plot is largely unknown at this point, THR mentions that the new movie would have a suburban setting. Filming is expected to begin in February.

Six years ago, 20th Century Fox circled back to the well for a full-fledged reboot of Predator. In what should have been a return to form for the cult sci-fi series, particularly after those dreadful Alien crossover movies, Nimród Antal’s modern redo struggled to make much of an impact.
And so, our attention is now drawn to The Predator, Shane Black’s 2018 sequel that is out to recapture the spirit of the 1987 original, one in which Black himself starred in as Rick Hawkins. Now, The Nice Guys director has been elected at the helm of Fox’s overhaul, and is currently fine-tuning a script he penned with the help of Fred Dekker. Casting is already underway, and though it appeared The Predator had landed its first major star in Benicio Del Toro, we learned that the Guardians of the Galaxy actor has now been replaced by Boyd Holbrook (Logan...

About one month ago, it was reported that Benicio Del Toro was in early talks with 20th Century Fox to star in Shane Black's The Predator. While THR reveals that Del Toro is no longer lined up for the project, another actor is now being pursued for the lead role.
According to THR, Boyd Holbrook is in talks to star in The Predator. Holbrook has been a very busy actor over the last several years, appearing in The Skeleton Twins, A Walk Among the Tombstones, Gone Girl, Run All Night, and Morgan. He's perhaps best known for playing Steve Murphy on the Netflix series Narcos, and he'll play the villain opposite Hugh Jackman in the upcoming Wolverine movie, Logan.
Del Toro's packed schedule reportedly prevented him from joining the cast of The Predator, which at one point was slated to start filming in February of 2017.

Details about the latest film in the Predator franchise are slowly coming to the surface. In a recent interview with Collider, co-writer/director Shane Black touched on the time period of the new film and how they may explore possibilities of paying tribute to the previous movies in the franchise, especially the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring original.
Speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub at CinemaCon, Black mentioned that it looks like The Predator will be his next film and that he wants to channel the “fresh” thrills and immersive storytelling of 1987’s Predator (in which he co-starred as the wisecracking Rick Hawkins):
“…it doesn’t have to be huge—but it just has to feel like a Predator movie you want to see in the summer and line up for it… Let’s get back to the excitement and innovation of that original movie where it felt fresh.”

Once upon a time, Shane Black was offered the chance to polish up the script for the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic Predator in the hopes of improving upon what they already had. He declined. Then he was cast in a supporting role in the film (Rick Hawkins) with the idea being that his new investment in the success of the film might cause him to change his mind. Nope. That didn't do the trick either.... Read More...

With the May release of The Nice Guys gradually approaching, writer/director Shane Black is starting to do the press rounds again, and in a recent interview he talked about his upcoming Predator movie.
Speaking with Thrillist (via Collider), Black discussed how Fox’s willingness to really invest into The Predator as an “event status” film helped convince him to take the helm:
“They [Fox] said, “What if we said to you we want to reinvent this, and really treat it with as much of an event status, or as much hoopla as we would the Alien prequel, which is coming out also? We really want to make this something. The kind of movie that people line up for.” I said, “Really, you’ll spend a bunch of money?” They go, “Yep.” I go, “Make it really scale, spectacle?” “Yep.” “Shit, that sounds interesting.”

Over one year ago, it was revealed that Fox was looking to get to the chopper for a new Predator movie with Shane Black in the director's chair and Fred Dekker on the keyboard, but since that initial announcement, the news front for the project has been as quiet as its stealthy galactic hunter... until recently, when producer John Davis broke the silence.
Speaking with Collider's Haleigh Foutch at the Television Critics Association, Davis, co-producer of the original Predator and producer of the upcoming entry to the franchise, said that the new Predator film—considered a sequel rather than a reboot—is still very much on track and that the script from Black and Dekker (longtime friends who worked together on the beloved 1987's Monster Squad) is spectacular:
“Shane shot a movie and he’s doing a pilot now, but I’ve read a lot of his script and I think it’s genius.

In 1986, Jean-Claude Van Damme was the title alien in Predator before he was hurriedly recast. Ryan looks back at what happened...
In the mid-1980s, Belgian martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme arrived in America with dreams of stardom. Possessing a finely-honed physique, thanks to years of training in (among other things) karate, kickboxing and ballet, he was ambitious and brimming with self-belief.
The acting bug bit Van Damme while he was still in his teens: he played “a bad guy with all the knives” in the 1984 French gangster movie Rue Barbare and, determined to further his goal of becoming an actor, hopped on a plane to Los Angeles. His first few years in America were, however, tough. He slept in a rental car for two weeks, and made money by teaching aerobics and martial arts, delivering pizzas, and working as a doorman at a restaurant belonging to Chuck Norris.

Earlier this week, news broke that "Predator" would be getting a big screen revamp from writer/director Shane Black, who co-starred in the original movie as The Guy Who Makes The Off-Color Jokes (actual character name: Rick Hawkins). It was widely believed that this would be a soup-to-nuts remake in the mold of "Batman Begins" or 2009's "Star Trek." Well, Collider got in touch with Black and had him clarify what direction this new film would be taking, and it turns out that it's actually more straightforward than that.
Black said that the approach that he and co-writer Fred Dekker were taking was an "inventive sequel." "As far as Fred and I are concerned," Black told Collider's Adam Chitwood. "Why start over, when you've all this rich mythology yet to mine?" Black, apparently, isn't a huge fan of reboots but that he can "get behind inventive sequels." The draw for...

Just as Sergeant Blain Cooper didn’t have time to bleed, neither does Shane Black have the time or interest in walking down reboot road. Yesterday the news broke that writer/director Shane Black had been signed by Fox to make a new Predator movie, with Black’s longtime friend Fred Dekker set to write the script. While originally thought to be a reboot, Black recently revealed the movie will instead be built more like a sequel than a straight-up relaunch.
Shane Black shared his thoughts on the new Predator project with Collider, saying that he prefers “inventive sequels” over reboots and that he and Dekker want to dive into and enlarge the “rich mythology” of the previous films. As far as Black and Dekker are concerned, the latest entry into the Predator franchise will not be a reboot, so it will be interesting to see if it will be...

I'd wager a bet Shane Black is still unknown by most general movie fans despite the fact he directed the sixth highest grossing worldwide release of all-time, Iron Man 3 (yeah, Frozen just passed it). Now I'd double down on that wager when it comes to those that do know who Shane Black is, that they might not know that not only did he play the role of jokester Rick Hawkins (pictured) in John McTiernan's Predator, but he got the role because Fox wanted him to rewrite the film's script. Well, they're asking for his help on the franchise again. THR reports Black will be reteaming with Fred Dekker (RoboCop 3) with Black writing a treatment for a Predator reboot and Dekker writing the final script. Black and Dekker worked together co-writing 1987's The Monster Squad. The report says Black may end up directing the film, but he's currently putting together The Nice Guys,...
