For an 86-minute movie, ‘A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III’ is about 85 minutes too long
A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III
Written by Roman Coppola
Directed by Roman Coppola
USA, 2012
Opens Feb. 15 in Toronto and Montreal
In the opening scene of A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, the titular Swan (played by Charlie Sheen) is given a psych evaluation, wherein the screen is cluttered with bursting pop-art collages that consist of 30% nonsense and 70% T&A. Everything about the character is revealed in this scene; all of his fears, desires, fantasies, anxieties. Within the opening minute, the concept promised to us by the movie’s title is already fulfilled. Job done, fade to black, credits. This is not what the movie does, unfortunately, and it’s a doggone shame that it doesn’t. For an 86-minute movie, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III is about 85 minutes too long.
The next scene is of a break-up between the...

If there's one train wreck America is more than willing to forgive, it seems to be Charlie Sheen. After a very public meltdown a couple of years ago -- which culminated in his dismissal from the No. 1 sitcom on television and included a TV confession where he admitted that he was full of tiger blood -- he has had a remarkable rebound. This year, his FX series "Anger Management” begins a run of 90 new episodes, enough to push it into syndicated territory (and enough to keep Sheen rolling in tiger's blood for decades to come). However, recent big-screen fame has eluded Sheen. He hasn't been in a major film outside of his regular appearances in the "Scary Movie" franchise (he'll be back in "Scary Movie V" ) and, despite a brief cameo, was conspicuously absent from Oliver Stone's high-profile sequel "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps." But he's back this week,...

Roman Coppola may only be on his second directorial feature, but as a music video and commercials director, and as a writer and frequent Wes Anderson collaborator -- not to mention handling the second unit on various films from his famous family members -- he has certainly amassed a wealth of filmic experience. All of which he brings to bear on "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III." Destined to be a crowd-pleaser because of its many celebrity cameos, quirky and apropos Liam Hayes music, and lovingly detailed 70s-influenced stylization, the film affords many glossy, knowing pleasures, and we found ourselves really wanting to love it. But that deeper level of engagement just didn't kick in for us for two main reasons: the lack of a strong narrative through line and the lack of dimensionality to the central titular character. The film delivers on its title, but it...

As Roman Coppola’s new film “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III” waits to be unspooled onto the big screen on February 8th, it has now been announced that the original soundtrack to the film will soon be available for purchase as well. Liam Hayes, also known professionally as Plush, wrote the original score and those who have already seen the movie (available right now On Demand) will have noticed that his music is very prominent throughout. Now, all of his songs, plus songs performed by Jason Schwartzman, Charlie Sheen and Katheryn Winnick, will appear on the soundtrack album. Roman Coppola, who became a huge fan of Liam Hayes’s music over the years, contacted him while making 'Charles Swan' and convinced him to write music for the film. His affection for the musician is very apparent as Liam Hayes actually performs one of his songs in the movie.

1.) The first photos from A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III have made their way online, and in case you, like me, had never heard of this movie until this morning, I thought I'd offer you a little plot description as well. It's written and directed by Roman Coppola, a frequent collaborator of both his sister, Sophia Coppola, and Wes Anderson, and was just picked up by brand new indie distributor A24 for a February 2013 release. The film stars Charlie Sheen as the title character, a charismatic playboy whose life begins unraveling when the love of his life breaks up with him. Some of the scenes take place inside the character's mind, with surrealistic results, including a western sequence and an underground spy-agency sequence. Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman play his best friends, while Mary Elizabeth Winstead also plays a prominent role as the ex-girlfriend's best friend. Two more pictures are directly below.

With the fall film festival line-ups now pretty much all revealed, it seems we may have to wait until 2013 to see the sophomore directorial effort of Roman Coppola. It's been over ten years since the deliciously twisted "Cq," but Coppola has now brought together a great cast that includes Charlie Sheen, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Aubrey Plaza and Mary Elizabeth Winstead for what he describes as "a guy's point of a view of a break-up" in "A Glimpse Into The Mind Of Charlie Swan III." In an interview with GQ, however, Coppola provided a little update on the pic regarding music, noting that he "used exclusively the music of Liam Hayes" having been "absorbed" by his tunes. Perhaps better known by his stage name Plush, Hayes is no stranger to the silver screen having appeared in "High Fidelity" performing his track "Soaring and Boring." As the image above will attest to,...

Glen shares his appreciation for the 2000 movie High Fidelity, and lists his favourite songs from its eclectic soundtrack…
There aren't many finer examples of films that marry together music and movies as perfectly as High Fidelity. In many ways it's the ultimate movie for music geeks.

Characters in films addressing the audience can be a tricky one to get right. Sure, there are notable examples of where this works brilliantly, but get it wrong and it can come across as both cheesy and distracting.
