Sasquatch Sunset directors Nathan and David Zellner always wondered what these hairy giants do when they’re not walking – the only Bigfoot footage available has been a minute of a supposed Sasquatch wandering in the northern California woods. They decided to flesh that out in unique dialogue-free comedic imagining of the creatures’ daily life – eating, fighting, etc. Stars Jesse Eisenberg, Riley Keough, Christophe Zajac-Denek and Nathan Zellner are unrecognizable as the hairy tribe of four that entranced Sundance (see Deadline review). Bleecker Street is opening the film, written by David Zellner, executive produced by Ari Aster, in 9 theaters in New York, LA, San Francisco and Austin, ahead of a big jump to about 800 screens next week.

Writer/Director Kiah Roache-Turner wears his influences on his sleeves in the throwback creature feature Sting. A mysterious object from outer space crashes into a New York apartment amidst a raging blizzard, where the mysterious spider inside it is discovered by a girl named Charlotte. Charlotte dubs her new pet Sting, unaware that it’s not from Earth and comes with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. As the spider’s reign of terror increases, so does Roache-Turner’s commitment to capturing the mayhem through stunning practical creature effects, which makes this film worth the price of admission.
It’s not just the spider’s pet name, derived from The Hobbit, or the effects by the 5-time Academy Award® Winner Wētā Workshop, led by Creative Director Richard Taylor, that calls the work of Peter Jackson to mind here. It’s also the film’s sense of humor, from the opening...

A killer spider terrorises a New York apartment building in a tonally messy horror with some great creature effects. Our review of Sting:
Odd name for a killer spider movie, Sting. For that we can thank Tolkien-loving 12 year-old Charlotte (Alyla Browne) who chooses it as the nickname for the arachnid she finds scuttling around her dimly-lit New York apartment building. Sweeping the critter into a jar and intent on keeping it as a pet, Charlotte is blissfully unaware that Sting is capable of escaping from its glass prison and, as it dines on other living things roaming around the building, will soon grow to a frightening size.
Written and directed by Australian filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner, Sting is an eclectic mash-up of styles and influences. Its snowbound apartment setting, every floor filled with eccentrics, immediately recalls Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro’s Delicatessen. Roache-Turner seems to relish in the little...

In “Sting,” a giant-spider-grows-in-Brooklyn thriller that’s cheeky, bloody, and (most important) very gooey, Sting is the name given by Charlotte (Alyla Browne), a precocious tween, to the elegant two-inch-long black spider that becomes her pet (she keeps it in a jar and feeds it bugs). Yet given how much slaughter is caused by this omnivorous arachnid, which grows bigger and bigger with each feeding, the moniker turns out to be a major understatement. It’s as if Jason Vorhees were named “Paper Cut.”
“Sting” is a wee sliver of a horror film that’s tongue-in-cheek but also quite matter-of-fact about its creature-feature jokiness. It’s the monster-bug thriller as light dessert. The spider, it turns out, is an alien — after a gruesome prologue with lots of whooshing “Evil Dead” camera movement, the movie cuts to four days earlier, when a fiery meteorite crashes through an apartment roof in South...

From Arachnophobia to Itsy Bitsy, from Tarantula to Abyssal Spider, killer spider movies have always been in style. But there’s something special about the newest eight-legged offering, Sting. Sting is everything that’s amazing about creature features.
Sting is about a young girl named Charlotte (Alyla Browne from the unfortunate Children of the Corn remake) who spends her time drawing comics and creeping into her neighbors’ apartments by crawling through the apartment building’s air ducts. One day while doing the latter, she comes across a cute little spider which she takes home and names Sting – not after the rock star or the wrestler, but after the short sword in The Hobbit. Yes, Charlotte is a dork.
But Sting isn’t a normal, run-of-the-mill spider. It’s an alien spider that crashed on Earth in a meteorite. First,...

Plot: A 12-year-old girl decides to keep a spider as a pet, not aware that the eight-legged creature is not of this world. The more it eats, the more it grows, and soon a giant space arachnid is running loose in an apartment building, snacking on the residents.
Review: Filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner is best known for his wild and crazy zombie movies Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, which blended inspiration from Mad Max and Dawn of the Dead to tell the story of a unique zombie outbreak where the living dead have flammable blood and exhale methane. I enjoyed both of those movies, and though I haven’t seen Roache-Turner’s action comedy Nekrotronic yet, it sounds like it’s pretty much in line with the tone of the Wyrmwood flicks, as it tells the story of “a man who discovers that he is part of a...

"What kind of spider are we talking about here?" "A big one." Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for an insanely scary, unsettling horror movie called Sting, arriving in theaters this April. This Australian production comes from a filmmaker named Kiah Roache-Turner, and it looks as scary as any spider movie can. Sting spins a web of thrilling terror when 12-year-old Charlotte’s pet spider rapidly transforms into a giant flesh-eating monster, forcing the young girl to fight for her family's survival. The freaky little creature actually comes from outer space, an alien spider that befriends this little girl before it becomes an enormous killer. This stars Alyla Browne, Ryan Corr, Penelope Mitchell, Jermaine Fowler, Silvia Colloca, Danny Kim, Noni Hazlehurst, and Robyn Nevin. This isn't the only extremely scary spider movie this year - there's also a French horror called Vermin that apparently used real spiders while shooting.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted a new US trailer for this indie dramedy from Australia titled June Again, made by filmmaker JJ Winlove. This already opened in Australia & New Zealand months ago, and is arriving in the US on VOD starting next January. The cast also includes Claudia Karvan, Stephen Curry, Otis Dhanji, Nash Edgerton, Darren Gilshenan, Pip Miller, and Matilda Ridgeway. This looks like a good one. Here's the official...

Six-part anthology series Fires, about the experiences of everyday people at the frontline of the 2019-2020 bushfires, will premiere on Sunday, 26 September, 8.40pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.
Filmed in Melbourne and regional Victoria earlier this year, the Tony Ayres Productions drama goes behind the images and the headlines to touch on the stories of people directly affected by the fires.
The series begins in Queensland in September 2019, at the start of the fire season, and continues as the fires make their deadly march south, burning out of control through Nsw and Victoria until February 2020. Each episode is set in a different location as the fires spread and build to a terrifying onslaught across the country through Christmas and New Year.
As the fires grow in intensity and ferocity and threaten different communities, new characters appear, whose stories reflect the breadth of experience during Australia’s black summer.

It’s been a while since death has been a central character on a series. 16 years ago, “Six Feet Under” gave us its iconic series finale. And now, creator-writer Samantha Strauss’ pitch dark comedy “The End” aims to capture some of the same messiness and beauty of mortality surrounding one family in Australia. Trouble is, it doesn’t always come together as meaningfully as it should.
The premise is certainly interesting enough, though, amplified by a standout cast to boot. Frances O’Connor plays Kate, a doctor specializing in palliative care. Day in and day out, she comforts people who are sometimes in their final days, offering both medical and emotional guidance to those who may be spiritually depleted. So, you could infer, especially from O’Connor’s wonderfully controlled performance, that death has become somewhat desensitized for Kate. But she is in the business of trying to avoid it as much as possible,...

Questlove’s Summer of Soul is up to 753 theaters as the doc about the 1969 ‘Black Woodstock’ concert in Harlem that debuted in two locations last weekend crossed into arthouse, commercial and urban venues.
Not that it was easy, said Frank Rodriguez, SVP General Sales Manager, Searchlight Pictures. “Exhibitors are eager to get back on track,” he said. “We had to push very hard in a crowded marketplace” that includes The Boss Baby: Family Business, The Forever Purge and week two of the first true post-Covid blockbuster, F9.
Rodriguez cited notable performances in Brooklyn, San Francisco and Georgetown in D.C. after what was basically an extended promo in NY and LA. Deadline is hearing from industry estimates that Thursday night came in north of $78K.

A hapless romantic learns about the dangers of procrastination while attempting to save his crumbling marriage in “Long Story Short,” Australian actor Josh Lawson’s harmless, heart-filled follow-up to his 2014 directorial debut, “The Little Death.” Though the high-concept relationship movie frequently trips over its own well-meaning sentiments, the sweet, earnest performances and sharp technical craftsmanship deliver a blissful feeling when the material comes up short.
Teddy (Rafe Spall) is perpetually late to everything important. His poor time-management skills have led him to arrive at a New Year’s Eve party in the final seconds of the countdown to midnight, only to swoop in and lay a big smooch on … Leanne (Zahra Newman), a total stranger he mistakes for his flighty girlfriend, Becka (Dena Kaplan). With no new major releases, last weekend saw the lowest box office tally of the year so far.
The environment saw Guy Ritchie’s Wrath of Man, already four weeks in release via Studiocanal, top the box office with just $719,734, moving to $6 million.
Summing the weekend, Wallis Cinemas programming manager David Simpson tells If: “When Honey I Shrunk the Kids is your number one film it feels surreal.”
The weekend also saw significant discounting from some exhibitors, including Palace Cinemas in Melbourne, Sydney and Byron Bay and the Lido, Classic, Cameo and the Ritz, which are offering $5 tickets until tomorrow.
Overall, the top 20 titles amassed a paltry $3.9 million, down 35 per cent on the previous, according to Numero.
Despite the quiet, many exhibitors are excited for this promise of this week’s Quiet Place Part II and Cruella, as well as a slew of other new releases scheduled for the coming...

"I don't think you get how time travel works." Saban Films has released the official trailer for a romantic comedy titled Long Story Short, made by actor / filmmaker Josh Lawson. This actually premiered at the Luxembourg City Film Festival last month, and lands on VOD this July. Teddy wakes up the morning after his wedding to discover that every few minutes he's jumping forward to the next year of his life. "Watching his future flash before his eyes, Teddy must make every second count if he is to win back the woman he loves in this feel good comedy about second chances." Rafe Spall stars as Teddy, with Zahra Newman as his love interest Leanne, joined by Ronny Chieng, Josh Lawson, Dena Kaplan, and Noni Hazlehurst. This reminds me of About Time, both use time as the narrative conceit to talk more about the power of love. Here's the official...

Warner Bros.’ Those Who Wish Me Dead was declared Doa as it opened in the US over the weekend, but Australian audiences took to the neo-Western, with the film topping the box office.
Directed by Taylor Sheridan (Hell or High Water), the film is co-led by young Aussie talent Finn Little, who plays a teenager who witnesses the murder of his father and goes on the run with a smokejumper (Angelina Jolie) through the wilderness in order to escape a pair of assassins (Nicholas Hoult and Aiden Gillen) hired to silence him.
WB opened the film on 249 screens, grossing $1.2 million. In the US, where it premiered simultaneously on HBO Max, it garnered just $US2.8 million.
While Majestic Cinemas CEO Kieren Dell regards the weekend past as “one of the slowest of the year”, Those Who Wish Me Dead was a strong performer across his sites in regional Nsw and Queensland.

JJ Winlove’s June Again, starring Noni Hazlehurst, Claudia Karvan and Stephen Curry, resonated with Mother’s Day crowds at the box office.
The local film opened third nationally over the weekend, behind only the spectacles of much larger films Wrath of Man and Mortal Kombat.
Winlove’s debut feature, June Again follows family matriarch June (Hazlehurst), who gets a fleeting bout of lucidity from dementia. Much to their amazement, June re-enters the lives of her adult children, Ginny (Karvan) and Devon (Curry), and learns that ‘things haven’t gone according to plan’.
With limited time but plenty of pluck, she sets about trying to put everything, and everyone, back on track. When her meddling backfires, June sets out on a romantic journey of her own and discovers she needs help from the very people she was trying to rescue.
Studiocanal opened it on 319 screens, with ticket sales tallying $561,468. With previews,...

“We want to tell stories that are a bit itchy and a lot addictive; that dig below the scab and broken skin and investigate all sorts of wounds that haven’t healed properly,” said Strauss.
“Let them bleed, weep and breathe. The opportunity to tell more of these stories, with the brilliantly supportive and talented See-Saw family, fills my writer heart with glee.”
Gardner said: “Samantha is a rare talent, one that is able to marry her immense artistic gifts with a keen understanding of the business,...

The End, the British/Australian dark comedy drama starring The Crown and Succession star Harriet Walter and Mansfield Park’s Frances O’Connor, is heading to Showtime.
The ViacomCBS-owned network has acquired the 10-episode first season of the drama, which is produced by Top of the Lake producer See-Saw Films and was a co-production between Sky and Australia’s Foxtel. Endeavor Content handled the U.S. deal.
O’Connor plays Dr Kate Brennan, an Australian-based specialist in palliative care. Euthanasia is a hot-button topic in Kate’s field of work and she is passionate in her opposition. On the other side of the world, Kate’s mother Edie Henley, played by Walter, feels just as strongly about her right to die. Kate has little choice but to ship Edie out from England and deposit her in a nearby retirement village in the Gold Coast – Edie’s worst nightmare. While Kate struggles with her own problems,...

Jennifer Naughton.
Jennifer Naughton, Rgm Artists’ head of literary, explains how the agency’s clients are coping with the pandemic and addresses the lack of JobKeeper support and the exciting prospect of making content with Australian talent to export to the world.
Q: In these unprecedented times, how is your talent roster coping with the lockdown and production shutdown?
A: Everyone is doing the best that they can, given the current circumstances. Many are looking at what they can develop themselves and who they might collaborate with to stay connected.
Q: Noni Hazlehurst is among the most vocal critics of the Federal Government’s decision to exclude freelancers and contractors from JobKeeper. I assume most of Rgm’s clients aren’t eligible?
A: Our industry is almost exclusively based on fixed term contract engagements and that unfortunately means the vast majority are ineligible for JobKeeper. It’s a shame that...

Paul Fletcher.
Paul Fletcher acknowledges the urgency of resolving the Covid-19 insurance risk issue for screen productions and other sectors, and promises to formulate the Federal Government’s media reforms as quickly as possible after the consultation period.
In a wide-ranging interview with If, the Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts also re-iterated the temporary suspension of the commercial broadcasters’ local content quotas was implemented solely due to the production shutdown, which meant the networks could not fulfill their 2020 obligations.
While he is unwilling to preempt his decision on whether or not to continue the suspension next year, he indicated the state of the TV advertising market would not be a factor.
The Minister has begun a series of roundtables as part of the consultation process following the release of the Screen Australia/Acma options paper, which sets out four potential models for how local screen content could...

Despite the fact that every study on the subject ever undertaken overwhelmingly demonstrates the value and importance of exposure to and/or participation in the arts in enriching and improving the lives of children and adults alike, it seems that arguing for the support of culture doesn’t cut it in this country right now.
Somehow the artistic and cultural sectors have been officially dismissed as unnecessary and elitist, which is blatantly untrue and utterly without foundation. The reverse is true. There is very little about being an artist or arts worker in this country that could be described as elitist.
It’s interesting to note the difference in approach to the hardships being experienced by our creative industries between our Government and the New Zealand Government.
