Since its debut in 2000, hundreds of castaways have played the game of “Survivor.” While many have been injured on CBS’s reality TV show, no one has ever died during filming. Sadly, several former players have passed away since leaving the island. In our “Survivor” deaths photo gallery above, we take a moment to remember all of the people who we’ve lost over the years, including most recently Sonja Christopher of Season 1 fame. Their torches will live on forever in our hearts.
Sonja Christopher (‘Survivor: Borneo’)
January 28, 1937 – April 26, 2024
Having the distinction of being the first person ever to be voted out of “Survivor,” Sonja was a sweet, fun-loving person who integrated well with her Tagi tribe members, serenading them with tunes from her luxury item of a ukulele. The Season 1 cast member was also a cancer survivor. She was eliminated after her stumble in the first-ever immunity challenge, costing...

Survivor is one of those shows that is made great by the character of the players and the work of the editors.
A jury of booted players always chooses the winner, but sometimes the winner is a surprise even to production.
It's up to the editors to craft a satisfying narrative based on the footage they have but still make sure the outcome isn't too obvious. Thirty-nine days (or 26 in the last three seasons) yields a lot of material, so you'd think they'd always have enough to go on.
Not always. Sometimes, making the winner appear deserving seems impossible, so the players' relationships and strategies are embellished or tossed aside in favor of an entertaining throughline. It hasn't always worked.
Warning: This article contains spoilers for many seasons of Survivor.

As the old saying goes, once you reach the top, the only way to go is down. Perhaps that’s a part of the reason why so many “Survivor” winners never returned to play again. There have been 39 winners over the past 41 seasons, and of those a whopping 27 played multiple times. Thus, over the past two decades, 12 “Survivor” champions took home the 1 million check and never looked back — or were never asked back. See the full list below.
Several winners found success on their second go-around, like Amber Brkich (“All-Stars”) and Parvati Shallow (“Micronesia”). For others it took a long while to get there, like Rob Mariano (“Redemption Island”), who didn’t prevail until his fourth season.
Some of the most recent champs like Chris Underwood (Season 38), Tommy Sheehan (Season 39) and Erika Casupanan (Season 41) haven’t had a chance to return to the game quite yet, but we’re optimistic...

Clay Jordan, the runner up on Survivor’s Season 5 Thailand installment has died, according to a social media post by his daughter. He was 66.
Shanda Jordan wrote on behalf of herself and her brother, “Andy and I are so heartbroken.” She called her father “my Hero” and said that they took comfort in knowing their father was “no longer in pain.”
No cause of death has been announced, but People reported he “died Thursday after a short illness.” His wife Linda died earlier this year after coming down with Covid, according to People.
A Facebook account for Linda Reeves Jordan, which is linked to from his daughter’s announcement, includes a post from January 26 that reads, “Clay has had covid for 6 days and I have had it 5 days. It is kicking my butt! I can’t wait to feel like a human again. Prayers please. All I can do is sleep!

“Survivor: Winners at War” may purport to decide the best winner of all time, but 18 former champions could plausibly dispute that. While Season 40 does have “Survivor” legends like Rob Mariano, Parvati Shallow and Sandra Diaz-Twine, it does not include every past winner. For instance, the first two winners, Richard Hatch and Tina Wesson, are missing from the “Winners at War” cast despite being from two of the most-watched seasons in the show’s history. Check out our photos above of all 18 “Survivor” winners not on the Season 40 cast.

It was established in the very first season of “Survivor” in 2000 that playing the game as a winking devil was a viable way to win. Richard Hatch made an alliance and voted out everyone not in that alliance, which was considered taboo at a time when viewers and Richard’s fellow castaways were still trying to figure out the true nature of the show. He also employed a cocky attitude, which naturally led to other villainous winners playing the game with swagger. That was certainly true of Brian Heidik in “Survivor: Thailand” and Todd Herzog in “Survivor: China,” who played their respective castmates like a fiddle. Tour our “Survivor” gallery above featuring nine of the most diabolical winners in the show’s history.

But with 39 seasons of winners and only 20 slots to fill, there are some glaring omissions we won’t see on the island this year. If “Survivor” fans finally get their wish of a long-rumored all-winners edition for Season 40 (due out in 2020), then the following five Male champs must be a part of the action, say our readers who voted in our recent poll. “Boston” Rob Mariano (Season 22) earned 15% of the vote, Yul Kwon (Season 13) also received 15%, Richard Hatch (Season 1) nabbed 12%, John Cochran (Season 26) scored 11% and Tony Vlachos (Season 28) netted 7%. Do you agree or disagree with your fellow “Survivor” fans? Be sure to sound off down in the comments section.

It’s official: 65% of “Survivor” fans have voted that they want to see an all-winners edition for the reality TV show’s 40th season (scheduled for early 2020). If the stars align, which castaways do you hope return for this long-awaited battle of the champions? As a refresher, over the past 38 seasons men accounted for 23 victories while 15 seasons were won by women (see all winners in our photo gallery above). Vote in our poll below to tell us which Male Sole “Survivors” must be a part of this potential all-winners season.

Many consider Richard Hatch, the show’s first-ever winner, to be the best of the best even 19 years later. Richard’s way of playing the game in “Borneo” — from creating alliances to being boastful about eliminating people — helped shape the reality TV villain of today.

Will ‘Survivor’ celebrate its 40th season with an all-winners edition? And should they do it? [Poll]
Richard Hatch vs. Sandra Diaz-Twine vs. Boston Rob? Oh, my.
For now, such a showdown is just a dream. However, there are rumbles in the “Survivor” jungle about what might be store for CBS’ reality show’s landmark 40th season. And it is quite an epic mind-blower: an all-winner cast pitted against one another. Inside Survivor and Reality Blurred both suggested that it is being considered for the series’ 20th anniversary next year.
The one blip that suggests that this isn’t quite a done deal yet derives from an interview that host Jeff Probst gave “Us Weekly” last summer during filming of Season 38. “We can’t do all winners. As a producer, I would never suggest it. I would say it’s not a good idea.”
What? Why not? “We have 10 great winners that you’d want to see play again. We don’t have 20. We don’t have...

Get your facts straight: "Facts of Life" star Lisa Whelchel isn't competing on "Survivor: Philippines" to revive her acting career.

Throughout the Survivor finale, the women kept saying to each other “may the best woman win." Thankfully, she did.
Kim put a bow on the neat little package that was her game this season. She dominated from start to finish and even if you do not believe she has earned her place among the Survivor greats, the way she played this season certainly does. Her win ranks alongside Boston Rob (Survivor: Redemption Island), Brian Heidik (Survivor: Thailand) and Tom Westman (Survivor: Palau).
Consider that throughout the entire game, she was never seriously targeted to be voted out. None of the other people playing with her recognized how much of a threat she was to not only keep advancing, but win the game. She played both sides of two different alliances at two different points in the game and came out of both not only on the winning side, but without a scratch on her.

It would be easy to call Colton Cumbie the most polarizing castaway of the "Survivor: One World" season, but that would imply that there are multiple poles of opinion. "Survivor" fans love Villains, whether they've been miscategorized like Boston Rob was in the "Heroes vs. Villains" season, or even if their actions have seemingly been beyond the pale. Jonny Fairplay. Russell Hantz. Even "Thailand" winner and puppy shooter Brian Heidik probably has defenders. At least for now, Colton has very few people in his corner. That's what comes from calling an African-American contestant "ghetto," from dubbing a little person...

Survivor's 20th season battle between heroes and villains is over, and the last person standing is the sassy 34-year-old bank teller from North Carolina.
Sandra Diaz-Twine came out on top for the second time after last night's two-hour season finale. Her feats not only included surviving 39 days out in Samoa, but also overcoming the loss of her alliance and making it to the end despite not winning a single immunity challenge. She also snagged her second million dollar prize. As Jeff Probst asked at the reunion, is Sandra the greatest Survivor player ever? We'll get to that in a moment.
After what many are considering to be the best season in the show's 10-year run, the finale did not disappoint. Colby Donaldson, the cowboy from Survivor: Australia, was the last Hero standing but could not outlast villains Jerri Manthey, Parvarti Shallow, Sandra Diaz-Twine, and the sinister Russell Hantz.

Brian Heidik, the $1 million winner of 2002's fifth season of US reality show Survivor, was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly shooting a puppy with an arrow. The 38-year-old was arrested in Douglasville, Georgia and was charged with battery and cruelty to animals and then released on bail. During the pre-trial bond hearing, Heidik told a judge he'd thought the dog was a coyote which had been harassing his pets. Douglas County Chief Deputy Stan Copeland, however, said it was indeed a puppy. Copeland explains, "At about 3am, his wife called to report that he was outside and that he shot a puppy that was on his property with an arrow and planned to shoot another one." When sheriff's deputies arrived, Heidik fled in his car, but was quickly apprehended. Heidik's wife and five-year-old son were home at the time of the incident. Copeland said there was evidence in the home to support a charge of battery for family violence, but would not elaborate on the nature of the evidence. The wounded puppy and the second puppy were turned over to animal control officials who were trying to locate their owners.
