With so many streaming platforms and broadcast channels, it's a challenge for shows of any genre to find an audience and thrive. This is especially true of the horror genre, which feels more niche in appeal than sitcoms and prestige dramas. However, not every cancellation has to do with low viewership, particularly with recent changes across the entertainment industry. From studio politics to fickle viewer attention, some shows get cut short for the oddest of reasons.
These horror shows were each canceled for relatively unconventional reasons, not entirely having to do with ratings or production costs. With everything from acclaimed international productions to adaptations of popular licensed properties, nothing is safe from behind-the-scenes drama and obtuse content strategies. The only thing scarier than some of these shows is the inane rationale that ended them before their time.

Is First Kill really dead in the ground? Showrunner Felicia D. Henderson isn't so sure. In an exclusive chat with E! News celebrating her show's TV Scoop Awards win, the TV producer revealed she's optimistic about a second season for First Kill, despite the show being canceled by Netflix earlier this month. (For the full list of winners, click here.) "I never say never," Henderson teased. "Netflix could look at all of this and say, 'Whoa, let's give it another shot. This is exciting.' Or they could say, 'You know what, it's not for us, but the fans want it. So, let's give the show up and let them find a home for it.'" Though this is...

Netflix stands alone in the crowded streaming industry as the most transparent company when it comes to viewership metrics, yet its public weekly data dump proves that it’s still hoarding the most valuable insights into audience consumption. Will that change with the company’s looming introduction of an ad-supported tier?
“Presumably, Netflix’s move into AVOD [advertising-based video on demand] will help, because, to quote ‘Spider-Man,’ with great advertising comes great responsibility. Specifically, to advertisers,” Entertainment Strategy Guy, a former digital entertainment executive at one of the major streaming services who now covers the industry as an anonymous analyst, told TheWrap.
Every week, the market-leading streamer unveils its 10 most-watched titles in global hours viewed across four categories: Films (English), TV (English), Films (Non-English) and TV (Non-English). This is far more intel than any other major streamer currently provides (and there’s a plethora of third-party data to draw from), but focusing on...

Netflix has attracted plenty of negative attention for its content strategy lately, with many accusing the streaming giant of relying too heavily on algorithms and not giving creators enough space and resources to thrive. While much of that commentary has come from outside the company, one of its former employees has joined the chorus of critics.
Felicia D. Henderson, who was in charge of the Netflix series “First Kill” before it was canceled after one season this week, aired her grievances about the axing in a new interview with The Daily Beast. She explained that Netflix canceled the vampire series just two months after it premiered on the service, citing insufficient performance on key viewership benchmarks. She claims that Netflix had previously expressed hope that early stumbles would not be permanent setbacks, but that the series was swiftly canceled when numbers did not improve.

Following the unceremonious cancelation of “First Kill” on Netflix after just one season, series showrunner Felicia D. Henderson is speaking out. For her, a big piece of the puzzle was the marketing muscle Netflix put behind it – or lack thereof.
According to Henderson, the streamer informed her over the phone that the reason for canceling the series was that “the completion rate wasn’t high enough.” Fans were left heartbroken and angry, citing the fact that “First Kill” actually did pull strong viewing numbers in its first two weeks on the streamer. Numerous comparisons were drawn between the teen vampire drama and the similarly queer teen–themed “Heartstopper,” which saw lower numbers in viewing, but was given a two-season renewal by Netflix.

On Tuesday, Netflix put a stake in First Kill after just one season. Today, showrunner Felicia D. Henderson went public with her thoughts about why the show was not given a new cycle.
First Kill was based on a short story by Victoria “V. E.” Schwab and executive produced by Emma Roberts.
In the series, teenage vampire Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) sets out to make her first kill so she can take her place among a powerful vampire family. She sets her sights on a new girl in town named Calliope (Imani Lewis). But much to Juliette’s surprise, Calliope is a vampire hunter, from a family of celebrated slayers. Both find that the other won’t be so easy to kill and, unfortunately, way too easy to fall for.
“I so enthusiastically signed on to this show [because] it has something for everyone,” Henderson said in an interview today with the Daily Beast,...

Felicia D. Henderson had high hopes for First Kill. The YA series had all the makings of a successful show, with a diverse cast and interesting story that would draw in teen viewers. But it seems Netflix subscribers weren't interested in watching all eight episodes, which debuted on the platform in June. "When I got the call to tell me they weren't renewing the show because the completion rate wasn't high enough, of course, I was very disappointed," Henderson told The Daily Beast Aug. 4. "What showrunner wouldn't be? I'd been told a couple of weeks ago that they were hoping completion would get higher. I guess it...

“First Kill” showrunner Felicia D. Henderson held Netflix accountable while talking to The Daily Beast about the streamer’s decision to cancel her lesbian teenage vampire series after only one season. Netflix announced the cancellation on Aug. 2, nearly two months after the eight-episode first season debuted. Sources told Variety that Netflix axed the series because its low viewership didn’t warrant the price tag of making a second season.
“When I got the call to tell me they weren’t renewing the show because the completion rate wasn’t high enough, of course, I was very disappointed,” Henderson said. “What showrunner wouldn’t be? The teen vampire series First Kill will not be returning for a second season as Netflix has canceled the Sarah Catherine Hook and Imani Lewis-starring drama. According to Deadline, the series did not meet the thresholds for viewing and completion of episodes. This was despite the show landing in the streamer’s weekly Top 10 for English-language TV series within its first three days of release. The show peaked at No. 3 in its first full week of release, falling only behind Stranger Things 4 and Peaky Blinders Season 6. First Kill is written by Felicia D. Henderson and best-selling author Victoria “V.E.” Schwab and is based on one of Shwab’s short stories. It revolves around teenage vampire Juliette (Hook) and her attempt to make her first kill so she can join a powerful vampire family. The victim she sets her sights on is Calliope (Lewis), a new girl in town...

Netflix has cancelled “First Kill” after its one and only season that launched in June of this year, TheWrap has confirmed.
Deadline first reported the news.
Netflix declined comment, but individuals with knowledge tell TheWrap that the decision comes down to cost vs. viewership, and that popularity at any given moment doesn’t account for factors like completion of a show’s season.
The series, produced by Emma Roberts through Belletrist Productions, is based off of V.E. Schwab’s short story “First Kill.” Felicia D. Henderson and Schwab wrote the television script.
“First Kill” follows teenage vampire Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) and teenage vampire hunter Calliope (Imani Lewis) as they both approach important rights of passage, which actually share a name — the first kill — even though they mean different things for each girl.

We’ve seen plenty of young adult vampire stories in film and television from Twilight to Vampire Diaries. There’s also been hunter-centric Shadowhunters, where vampires heavily feature, and we all know the Og Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Vampires and their hunters have been gracing our pages and screens since Dracula hit the presses in 1897, yet most modern takes have focused on white protagonists—human, hunter, and vampire alike. Black folks and other people of color have often been relegated to sidekick, or worse, the Magical Negro trope. First Kill puts a young Black hunter and her hunter family in the Uv spotlight alongside the traditional pale, white bloodsucking aristocrats.
We talked to showrunner Felicia Henderson about First Kill, bringing the short story to life, and making room for Black folks in genre storytelling.

This article contains spoilers for First Kill season 1.
First Kill tells the story of a forbidden romance between Legacy vampire Juliette and monster hunter Calliope. Adapted from the short story of the same name by author V.E. Schwab, the series introduces us to two opposing families, and explores both the world of Legacies and the world of hunters. The show gives us bits and pieces of mythology, with hints that there is much more yet to be revealed. We break down the show’s lore, and discuss worldbuilding with showrunner Felicia Henderson.
Legacy Vampires
Juliette and her family are Legacy vampires, which means they were born not made, pure-bloods. Unlike made vampires, Legacies cannot be killed with wooden stakes to the heart, but they are weak to pure silver. They are also able to walk in the sun, and can eat human food, even if it does not nourish them.

Netflix is giving a first taste of its upcoming vampire lesbian love story “First Kill.” The streamer released a trailer for the new young adult series, which is set to debut June 10.
Based on a short story from horror writer V. E. Schwab, which was originally published in the 2020 anthology “Vampires Never Get Old: Tales With Fresh Bite,” the series stars Imani Lewis and Sarah Catherine Hook as Calliope and Juliette, two teenage girls who have a meet-cute at their high school and fall head over heels in love. But their relationship gets complicated quickly when they discover their hidden identities: Calliope is the daughter of a long family line of vampire hunters, while Juliette is a “legacy,” a child born to a vampire family. To make matters worse, both of their families are preparing them for their “first kills,” an important rite of passage for vampire and hunter.

Streaming giant Netflix has inked a mega three-project deal with global superstar Beyoncé Knowles, worth a reported $60 million, a third of which went to her recent, much-anticipated behind-the-scenes Coachella concert special, “Homecoming,” the first of the trio. It’s a significant agreement that is representative of a recent sharp rise in content pacts with African American female creatives.
As TV networks target the African American market ever more aggressively, a corresponding rise in demand for content for that audience has meant a demonstrable increase in exclusive access to African American content creators who networks are clearly willing to pay up for.
It’s noteworthy that Knowles’ previous three TV specials — “Lemonade” (2016), “Life Is But a Dream” (2013) and the “On the Run” concert special (2014) — were all HBO broadcasts, but “Homecoming” was not. A likely explanation for that, according to Vulture, citing unnamed sources, is that binge-spending Netflix stepped in and offered...

We have the Smilf comedy series on Showtime. Now another female-centered project with a catchy acronym as a title, drama Pank, is headed to the small screen.
ABC has given a script commitment with penalty to Pank, from writer Felicia D. Henderson (Soul Food), producer Darryl Taja and 20th Century Fox TV.
In the one-hour drama, written by Henderson, 33-year-old Faith Jones is living and lovin’ her life as a Pank: Professional Auntie No Kids: a new guy, a new promotion, a new house, a fast car and plenty of disposable income. It’s kinda perfect — until the unexpected happens and circumstances force her to care for her brother’s three children. How will this childless-by-choice, badass Pank tackle raising three kids, while also maintaining the life she worked so hard to create?
Henderson executive produces alongside Taja.
