Playing as part of the New York Asian Film Festival, Jaime Sunwoo's short film “Handwritten” brings to life a personal musing about handwriting through black-and-white paper puppets and animation. Commissioned by Heather Henson's Handmade Puppet Dreams, the piece won Best Short Documentary at USA Film Festival and Indy Film Festival.
Handwritten is screening at New York Asian Film Festival
Narrated by the filmmaker, she recounts her own experience with learning how to write as a kid, each child's distinct handwriting emerging through repeated strokes of a pencil. The film moves through a quick contemplation on graphology, the study of handwriting, before ending on the sociohistorical legacy and impact of handwriting, which she notes has been transformed by the advent of typing and computing.
Framing handwriting as an intangible aspect of the self, “Handwritten” acts as a love letter to childhood and a video essay rolled into one, reflecting...

Jonathan Langager has spent a decade working on his animated short about a man stuck alone on an asteroid in space. Just months after premiering “Cosmic Fling,” his story about isolation and the desire for human contact that has suddenly become more relevant than ever.
“We released our film just a few months before everyone went into quarantine, but it’s going to be interesting seeing how people react to it now,” Langager told TheWrap. “We have it set to screen for some virtual film festivals but also some socially distanced outdoor festivals in Europe, and I think people there will really identify with it after being stuck in their homes for so long.”

When last we saw Toby Froud, he was an infant sporting stripey pajamas and getting abducted by David Bowie in Labyrinth, but now we've gotten word that Froud is following in his father's footsteps...
He has a new short film, Lessons Learned, on the way, and today we're happy to show you its trailer.
Actually, to say the last time we saw Froud was in Labyrinth is not true. His special effects work has appeared in such films as ParaNorman and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. But now, reminiscent of his father, Brian Froud (the elder Froud was, among other things, the conceptual designer for Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal), Toby has created a short film entitled Lessons Learned that was successfully Kickstarted last year and is heavily influenced by his father's iconic characters.

Special guests at this year’s festival include writer-director Rowan Joffe and novelist Sj Watson who will present Before I Go To Sleep, an amnesiac thriller starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth and Mark Strong.

For those of you who are fans of films such as The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, you'll love what this teaser trailer for a short film has to offer. The 15-minute short is called Lessons Learned, and it was written and directed by Toby Froud. For those of you not familiar with that name, he was the baby actor whose character was abducted by David Bowie in Labyrinth. Now he's all grown up and wants to make movies. His dad, Brian Froud, was the conceptual artist for both The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, so it looks like he's following in his dads footsteps. The project was Kickstarted last year, and he made it in conjunction with Heather Henson's puppet company Ibex Puppetry.
The fantasy film features a unique cast of puppet creatures, and the story follows "a young boy who receives an intriguing birthday gift from his grandfather. It...

1 year ago I attended the best festival I have ever been to as a filmmaker. All the movies were free. The location was beautiful. The people were amazing. And apparently I inspired them to create an Independent Spirit Award just to give to me.
Well the Orlando Film Festival is back and it kicks off Wednesday November 3rd at the Plaza Cinema Café in Downtown Orlando. While I won.t be screening anything at the festival, I will still be on hand checking out some films and promoting my own. I will also be handing out the Independent Spirit Award, which has been named after me this year.
The festival runs from Wednesday November 3rd through Sunday November 7th. All the film screenings are free but you must get a ticket for each at the booth in front of the theater. The Plaza Cinema Café is located at 155 South Orange...

The incredibly prolific mind of Jim Henson (1936-1990) was a veritable celebration of ideas for wondrous creatures and characters, stories, songs, and imagery. From the earliest age, Henson drew pictures, wrote jokes, built mobiles, and planned whole worlds. He thought in three dimensions and experimented in a huge variety of media, both with still and moving images. He was fascinated with how ideas are formed, how they interconnect in the mind, and how they can be shared through the visual and performing arts.
Organised with The Jim Henson Legacy, Jim Henson's Fantastic World offers audiences a rare peek into the imagination of this brilliant innovator and creator of Kermit, Big Bird, and other beloved characters. The exhibition documents Henson’s process of “visual thinking” through works of art, photographs, documents, puppets and other 3-D objects, and film and video clips. Museums may create a separate activity center with the educational and interactive resources provided.

Things are looking good for the links program. Really a nice mix this week, too:
This week’s must read article is j. j. murphy’s awesome think piece Indie Film in the Cross Fire, in which he smacks down the slowly creeping idea that filmmakers had better adjust the conception of their films in order to be more “market friendly” in order to survive. And, yes, I’ve written several pieces on Bad Lit about filmmakers doing better online marketing — but Don’T Put Your Marketing Before Your Films! Devour murphy’s piece, then click through to the “Straight Talk” article he links to. In that vein, No-Fi filmmaker Bob Moricz explains exactly why he makes No-Fi films. I’d also really like to thank Jacob W. for picking up and extending the conversation around the Anthology Film Archive’s Essential Cinema collection that was curated in the ’70s.

How do you create a kick ass trailer for an animation festival? By having two of your invited animators make them, of course.
Winnipeg's Plastic Paper is just around the corner and the festival has just released a pair of trailers for the event cut together by Clint Enns and Leslie Supnet. They aim to inspire lust amongst animation junkies. They succeed.
