Celine Dion’s scenes and the inclusion of her real-life love story count among the best moments of Jim Strouse’s Love Again. The romantic comedy-drama released alongside Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is a remake of Karoline Herfurth’s 2016 film, SMS für Dich, which was based on Sofie Cramer’s 2009 novel of the same title. While the movie has received lukewarm reviews thus far, it tells a compelling story of love and loss; one that parallels Celine Dion’s romance with her late husband, René Angélil. Starring the famous Canadian singer alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Sam Heughan, Love Again tells...

Wenders is in Cannes with “Perfect Days,” which is vying for the Palme d’Or, and the documentary “Anselm” in Special Screenings.
“Perfect Days” tells the story of a Tokyo janitor (Kôji Yakusho) who seems very content with his simple life, structured routines and passion for music, books and photography. Early in writer-director Jim Strouse’s Love Again, music journalist Rob Burns (Sam Heughan) receives his latest assignment: a profile on Celine Dion as she embarks on a new tour. When Rob, a defiantly unsentimental Scottish bloke, scoffs at the gig, his editor (Steve Oram) fires back by declaring that Dion is in the midst of a “Celine-aissance.” The legitimacy of that statement is debatable, but Dion is at least experiencing something of a cinematic boomlet, between the gonzo fictionalized biopic Aline and references in films as diverse as Turning Red and Queens of the Qing Dynasty.
In any case, Dion is the selling point of Love Again, with the Canadian pop superstar executive producing, performing new songs for the soundtrack, and co-starring as herself. The central narrative of this syrupy-sweet romantic-comedy, however, follows the romantic entanglements of Rob and grieving children’s book illustrator Mira Ray (Priyanka Chopra Jonas). Director Brian De Palma has made movies heavily influenced by Alfred Hitchcock before, but Passion (2012) is the first one whose characters look like they stepped out of one of Hitchcock’s classic films.
Karen Muller-Serreau’s bold and colourful costumes communicate the characters’ hidden desires and make watching Passion a sensory experience. This melodrama centres on two ad executives, Isabelle (Noomi Rapace) and her boss Christine (Rachel McAdams), who have a deadline to come up with an ad campaign for a new smartphone. In her sleep, Isabelle thinks of a great idea.
Dirk (Paul Anderson) in typical pinstriped suit with Isabelle (Noomi Rapace) in even more typical black.
The two other principal characters are Isabelle’s assistant Dani (Karoline Herfurth) and Christine’s boyfriend Dirk (Paul Anderson) who get tangled in the twists and turns of Christine and Isabelle’s relationship. Dani is an angel-faced redhead who is in unrequited love with her boss Isabelle,...

Filmed in 2010 and often billed as female version of The Lost Boys, We Are The Night is a German take on the vampire legend that follows Lena, a small time crook who, on the run from the cops, attracts the attention of Louise, a nightclub owner and leader of a trio of sexy female vampires that also includes a party girl, DJ Nora and former 1920s silent film star Charlotte.
When she unknowingly picks the pocket of a man one night on the streets of Berlin, small-time crook Lena attracts the unwanted attention of Inspector Tom Serner, a young police detective involved in ongoing investigations into Lena’s victim, a known Russian mobster. Passion plays as if writer/director Brian De Palma took Alain Corneau's screenplay for Love Crime, added on six minutes to the ending and shot every scene in one take no matter how well it turned out. All the elements from Corneau's original are here, but none of the intrigue. It's a stilted and stiff production with absolutely zero fluidity from scene to scene and lines such as "How about you call me... Never!" after Rachel McAdams is stood up by her booty call and she tosses her cell phone across the room. It's big moves, daring proclamations and over-acting met with an absence of thrills. The score tells you things are about to get intense, but it isn't long before you realize that's just not the case. I should note my opinion of this film is going to be much different when compared to someone that hasn't seen the original.

"Passion" is Brian De Palma's teasing, overripe remake of the forgettable French thriller "Love Crime." With its broadly drawn characters, erotic hints of homo- and heterosexual betrayal and lethal corporate intrigues, it's a competent take on material that may have seemed more current and scandalous in France (in 2010) than it does in America.
The hook here is that the corporate folks seducing, stealing credit from and back-stabbing each other are women.
Isabelle (Noomi Rapace) is a European ad exec who, with her provocatively dressed assistant (Karoline Herfurth), cooks up an account-saving cell phone campaign based on what the camera on that phone catches when a good-looking woman leaves it on in the back pocket of her tight jeans. Video of men spraining their necks as they turn around to check out the woman's bottom becomes a viral sensation.

Passion Fruit: De Palma’s Return to Genre a Flimsy Revamp
Arguably one of the greatest American directors from the mid 70s to late 80s, Brian De Palma returns with Passion, a remake of the late Alain Corneau’s last film, Love Crime (2010), with the end result unfortunately feeling dead on arrival. Part of the problem might be comparisons to the already pulpy but superior Gallic original, but De Palma, never a stranger to retooling material he’s attracted to (always criticized for borrowing heavily from Hitchcock and Eisenstein), here only manages to create a trashy, stale revamp that plays out nearly exactly the same way as the film it apes. Doubles have always been a favorite motif of his, and perhaps this is the unkempt sister image of Love Crime, escaping from behind the mirror.

Following an extensive stint during the 1980’s and early 1990’s purveying iconic crime dramas – works that would all but define his career – Brian De Palma as of late seems infatuated with deeply seeded noir and twisting thrillers with a noticeable erotic leaning. Passion is his third late stage foray (after both Femme Fatale and The Black Dhalia) into this sordid world. And while not as woefully misguided as that latter period effort, this remake of the 2010 French film Crime d’amour is more laughable than thrilling. As the dunderheaded revelations pile up against its debauched backdrop, Passion plays out more like a made for television adaptation of an erotic novel than a riveting tale of corporate backstabbing and misplaced trust.
Forever the visual storyteller, De Palma and cinematographer José Luis Alcaine certainly don’t skimp on style and unique, expressive shots and interesting alterations to the colour palates of different scenes.

Fans of the Canadian cutie can catch her next in the crime drama “Passion,” which also stars Noomi Rapace and Karoline Herfurth.

Erotic thrills are assured in Brian de Palma's ('Carrie') upcoming thriller 'Passion'. Based on the French movie 'Crime d'amour', from Alain Corneau and Natalie Carter, IFC Films are set to roll out 'Passion' onto VOD from 1 August and follow up with a limited theatrical release on 30 August. And if you're in two minds as to whether you want to check out this latest offering from De Palma perhaps a double dose of on-screen hotness in the form of Rachel McAdams -below ('Mean Girls') and Noomi Rapace ('Prometheus') will change your mind. Or indeed the fact that the movie will contain some pleasingly risque scenes between the two beauties. Brian De Palma’s “Passion,” distributed by eONE Films Us, is a film that seems like it’s going to give a feminine slant to the highly-popular subgenre of corporate thriller films. Errors Of The Human Body may only be considered a suspenseful thriller, but to me it’s straight horror. Why? I’ll be completely honest with you all – science terrifies me. I understand the need to always keep learning and create even greater understandings about this big, glorious universe we all live on, but at what cost? Do we really need to be creating super hadron colliders which can smash particles at the risk of creating a black hole which could potentially consume our planet? Think about it, if one measly scientist were to calculate a number wrong to the decimal point – boom, goodbye humanity. “Well the good news is, we discovered a new element. The bad news is, we’re all going to die – In The Name Of Science!”

Body Talk: Sheean’s Debut Forgoes Thrills for Moody Drama
Eron Sheean, best known for writing the 2011 Xavier Gens film, The Divide, arrives with his curiously titled Errors of the Human Body, a sort of medical drama thriller that sounds instead like a documentary series on the Discovery channel. At first playing like a treatment by Robin Cook with a mad scientist angle, the film eventually reveals that it has no interest in delivering the thrills or chills that its foreboding first half painstakingly constructs, instead settling for mediocre melodrama.
Geoffrey Burton (Michael Eklund) is a medical researcher that has dedicated his life to finding a cure for Burton’s syndrome, a deadly genetic disease caused by a mutation that claimed the life of his infant son and ruined his idyllic marriage.
