All sober-minded pop culture fans adhere to one important maxim: everything’s better with Nicolas Cage. And sure enough, Cage was a stand-out in the wonderful animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, as the comically hardboiled Spider-Man Noir. Every time Cage spit out a line about drinking egg creams and punching Nazis, audiences couldn’t help but cheer However, Cage isn’t the only thing that makes Spider-Verse‘s comedic take on Spider-Man Noir work. It also works because it’s limited, appearing in just a few scenes and making room for Miles Morales to be the far more dynamic heart of the piece. So as much as we love Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir, the recently-announced Spider-Man Noir live-action series sounds potentially ill-fated, especially if Cage’s character ends up being the same gag from the animated movies.

5 Essential Spider-Man Noir Comics You Must Read - Main Image
The live-action adaptation of Spider-Man Noir is coming to Prime Video, and Nicolas Cage will reprise his role as the alternate version of the Friendly Neighbourhood superhero.
It was in 2009 when Marvel Comics started creating a line of Marvel Noir comics that included Spider-Man Noir.
Unlike regular Marvel comics, the noir line takes place in an alternate universe where stories of familiar Marvel characters are reinterpreted to feature a hardboiled / crime noir atmosphere set during the Great Depression era in the US.
Here are the Spider-Man Noir comics you should read, created by David Hine and Fabrice Sapolsky, alongside artists Carmine Di Giandomenico (who drew the first stories) and Marko Djurdjević (costume designer).
Spider-Man Noir Volume 1 (2009)
Set on Earth-90214 during the Great Depression of winter 1932, New York City has become plagued by numerous criminal gangs.

Spider-Man Noir may have spent the past few years off somewhere staring at matches as they burn, but the hilariously melodramatic Spider-Verse character played by Nicolas Cage will officially return in a new show on MGM+ and Amazon's Prime Video, according to Variety. What's wilder: the show will be live action.
The new show will be called "Noir," and this isn't the first time we've heard about it: the show was first announced back in February 2023, but Cage's casting wasn't confirmed at that time. In fact, a month earlier the beloved actor actually told ScreenRant that he wasn't going to be included in "Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse," a decision he seemed bummed about. "You'd have to ask Sony," he told the outlet when asked about the future of his character. "No one's spoken to me about that ... I wish they would. I love Spider-Man Noir, too. I think that's a great character.

Nicolas Cage is going back into the Spider-Verse. Amazon, during its first-ever upfront presentation, announced that Cage will star in “Noir,” the live-action series based on the Spider-Man Noir comic series from Marvel.
Way back in early 2023, IndieWire reported that Amazon was in development on a live-action series inspired by the Spider-Man Noir character, who Cage famously portrayed in the animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” as a grizzled, tortured, black-and-white noir gumshoe who also happened to be a superhero bitten by a radioactive spider. But no cast had been confirmed for the live-action show, and Amazon surprised advertisers by revealing that Cage would step back into the role, making it the first time he’s done a TV series since he filmed a pilot at the start of his career.

Nothing looms larger in The Who’s artistic mythology than Pete Townshend’s unfinished “Lifehouse” project, a science fiction rock opera motion picture guaranteed to rock the world. Granted, we wouldn’t have Who’s Next (1971) if he completed it, but we can only imagine what the final product might have been on the big screen. Fortunately, there will soon be a way to see for ourselves in a new format.
Image Comics will publish Life House as a graphic novel on Dec. 6, and a vinyl-shaped hardcover will be part of its musical accompaniment: the Who’s Next/Life House box sets, dropping on Sept. 15. The cumulative story is not just for Who fans. The sci-fi community may have a future classic on their hands.

Spider-Man Noir is making the jump to live action, according to Variety. The 1930s detective movie-style hero, who fans have seen played by Nicolas Cage in "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and by Milo Ventimiglia in "Ultimate Spider-Man," is reportedly set to get his own TV series courtesy of Amazon Prime Video.
While casting information isn't yet known, the untitled Spider-Man Noir series counts "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" writer-producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller among the members of its producing team, along with former Sony Chairperson Amy Pascal (who executive produces) and "22 Jump Street" writer Oren Uziel. Lord and Miller's 2018 film saw Cage play an older, black-and-white private investigator version of Peter Parker with a hilarious level of angst. The character's favored pastimes included drinking egg creams, beating up Nazis, and letting matches burn down to his fingertips "just to feel something."

It looks like Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. has gained another potentially Inhuman cast member in the form of The Sopranos and Sons of Anarchy alum, Drea de Matteo. The Emmy Award-winning actress will appear in an unspecified upcoming episode as Karla Faye Gideon, a “gifted woman with a grudge to bear against S.H.I.E.L.D., who joins forces with Skye’s father.” The role will reunite Matteo with her former Desperate Housewives co-star, Kyle Maclachlan, who plays Skye’s father, Dr. Calvin Zabo.
Karla Faye Gideon is a name that hardcore Daredevil fans will recognize from the Daredevil: Redemption limited series by David Hine and Michael Gaydos. There, she was a victim of domestic violence and the mother of a murdered child, whose decision to stand by her husband put her at odds with the Man Without Fear. We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this March. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.8 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant pile of Christmas tinsel since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The first fill-in artist on Justice League, although Gene Ha is certainly no slouch in that department. We also have new writers on Firestorm and Green Arrow, new backups in Justice League and Action Comics, and the DC 52 hits lucky number 7.
Shall we see who is the fariest of them all? Oh indeedy, let’s do!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

"[The Darkness host Jackie Estacado] is one step removed from superhero comics," Hine told Comic Book Resources. "We've used that concept as a springboard to examine the characters of Red Robin and Catwoman, as well as Dick Grayson's (more)...

David Hine has revealed plans to add a new member to the Batman family in a two-part story this December. The Azrael writer will team up current Batman Dick Grayson with the newly returned Bruce Wayne in a special story arc told through the annuals of Detective Comics and Batman. The arc sees the duo head to Paris as part of the new Batman Inc initiative when they become embroiled amidst a number of assassinations and are forced to seek the help of a local character. However, Hine will mainly focus on what happens when the two current Batman incarnations approach Azrael to join them in Batman Inc, with the cover of series finale Azrael #15 suggesting that its protagonist will commit suicide. "I'm not giving anything away there," Hine told Newsarama of the apparent spoiler. (more)...

"Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions" unmasked its title earlier this month on a GamePro cover, but all kinds of details became official this week, including the game's September 2010 release date and the role of "Amazing Spider-Man" comics writer Dan Slott, who'll be leveraging David Hine's 2008-2009 "Spider-Man Noir" mini-series to show off an edgier version of the iconic hero.
"'Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions' delivers an original storyline that bridges four unique worlds," Activision's head of marketing Rob Kostich said in a press release. "Each action-packed universe will have its own detailed art design and thrilling missions, challenging gamers to use new skill sets to defeat enemies as they unlock powerful new moves and progress through the game."
Slott's story will chase the Tablet of Order and Chaos, which causes some reality and time and space problems that give way to the multiple Spider-Man universes, including that of "Spider-Man Noir," slated to appear.

That The Decemberists went full on prog rock opera for The Hazards of Love shouldn’t have surprised anyone with ears, but I imagine a lot of their fans just wanted another album of sea shanties and Victorian hookers. You can hear them play a bit with prog rock in Castaways and Cut outs in “California One/Youth and Beauty Brigade,” where the first song seamlessly transitions into the second. Then they tested the waters some more with their Ep The Tain. Then they threw a couple of song cycles into The Crane Wife that ended up better than a lot of the album’s standalone tracks.
So welcome to This Week in Comics, where every day is a comic book, and I really hope that the next Decemberists record scales back the proggyness a bit, just for the sake of not disappearing into increasing obscurity. You know, for the casual fans.

Sometimes, you just can’t let go. As a vampire, eternal life seems to be missing the “life” part as the heart no longer beats in the sunlight. As a zombie, you’re not suddenly changed in a matter of moments like the movies. Instead, you’re a rotting corpse, slowly losing everything you have as father time picks away at your flesh and bones. Both creatures of the night lost more than their humanity, and to let go of it all is to simply be destroyed by the living. For me, letting go is simply trying to ignore a comic book dealing with zombies and vampires. I need to find Waldo to keep my sanity!
Fvza is certainly an exception as I can’t put the thing down when reading it.

There have been times that I’ve complained bitterly about small indie comics. I’ve commented quite unfavorably about grammar mistakes and typos, about poorly written scripts, about pedestrian artwork. Fvza, the new title from Radical Publishing, takes a few steps toward changing my mind about indies.
Radical has described this project as “one of our biggest titles [to date],” and indeed, the creative talent involved here is pretty impressive for such an underground company; I can’t remember ever picking up a Radical book before and immediately recognizing the names on the cover. Fvza, which stands for Federal Vampire & Zombie Agency, is written by David Hine, a longtime Marvel scribe who’s written a number of X-Men-related events and miniseries in recent years, including Son of M, The 198, and Civil War: X-Men. More recently, he penned Inhumans: Silent War and Spider-Man Noir. The point is, he’s good.
