In the 1975 musical comedy horror "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," a recently engaged couple, Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) and Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick), seeks help at a nearby castle after their car breaks down on a dark, rainy night. The castle belongs to Dr. Frank-n-Furter, a mad scientist and flamboyant "transvestite" (his words) who's in the middle of throwing a lively celebration called the Annual Transylvanian Convention. Dr. Frank-n-Furter invites the couple to spend the night and shows them his "favorite obsession," his creation of Rocky Horror (Peter Hinwood), an artificially made muscle-bound man with blond hair and gold undies. Trapped in the castle, the naïve couple's relationship is tested by Dr. Frank-n-Furter's antics. The movie is a parodic homage to the sci-fi and campy horror films that came before it.

In many Tim Curry movies, you may not even know he's there. Not because he lacks screen presence -- far from it in fact -- but because in many of his roles his face is concealed. Since his movie debut as Dr. Frank-n-Furter in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," Curry has been an actor whose roles often require heavy makeup. Throughout both Curry's scene-stealing turn as Pennywise in the 1990 "It" miniseries and in his performance as the devilish Lord of Darkness in Ridley Scott's 1985 fantasy film "Legend," his true face never appears.
However, Curry never lets the makeup do his job for him. As an actor, it's his job to entertain his audience, and you won't get very far if you try to do that with just a costume. Case-in-point: the Pennywise makeup isn't especially scary on its own, but Curry's manic malice makes the villain nightmarish.

Laverne Cox will star in Fox's remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, playing the lead role of Dr. Frank-n-Furter. In the show, the transgender actress best known for Orange Is the New Black will be playing a "sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania," as the song that introduces the character goes. Tim Curry originated the role when the show was The Rocky Horror Show, a theatrical production in London, in the early Seventies.
The actress announced the news via Instagram. "I am so honored to be a part of the Rocky Horror legacy,...

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Directed by Jim Sharman
Screenplay by Richard O’Brien and Jim Sharman
1975, USA
The Rocky Horror Picture Show isn’t the first midnight-cult-classic, but the beautiful, weird and dark musical is without a doubt, the most famous. The film celebrates its 40th anniversary this week and so what better time to add it to my list of greatest cult films.
For the unfamiliar, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the film adaptation of a popular musical stage production composed and written by Richard O’Brien, a struggling actor at the time who was best known for his performances in such musicals as Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar. For O’Brien, The Rocky Horror Picture Show was an homage to drive-in double features and science fiction B-movies of the fifties, and ironically, the film itself went on to become the ultimate midnight movie. Trhps opened Sept.

"Rocky Horror never surprises me," says Lou Adler, who executive-produced The Rocky Horror Picture Show. "I can be sitting in the most conservative meeting about some other subject, and somebody will say, 'I have to admit...,' and then they give me their Rocky Horror story."
Later this month, Adler will be able to say he's heard four decades' worth of Rocky Horror lore, since the cult movie about newlyweds trapped in a mansion with a "sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania" will be turning 40. To celebrate, the film will be...

Writer and actor Richard O'Brien and composer Richard Hartley remember how three weeks at the Royal Court turned into a gender-bending 20th Century Fox extravaganza
Richard O'Brien, writer and actor
I'd been in Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair, and was starting to think I wouldn't mind seeing a musical that appealed to me, an eternal adolescent. I loved B-movies, rock'n'roll and glam, so thought I'd do a parody – or homage – to all those things.
Then Jim Sharman, the director of Jesus Christ Superstar, asked me to audition for a play at London's Royal Court. There I met Richard Hartley, who was writing its incidental music. One night, Jim brought Richard round to my place, and I sang them some of my songs, including Science Fiction/Double Feature and Hot Patootie. Jim thought they'd make a great show and called me afterwards saying: "They've asked me to do another play at...

Give it up from crown prince of Mattel hotness Mr. Zac Efron, who turns 25 today. Wow! Yay! Except, woah: This means Zac Efron is getting too old to play some of the roles he was born to fill. Before it's too late and Zac dies of old age with Kevin Jonas, here are seven roles we'd love to see the High School Musical alum play.
David Cassidy
The Partridge Family comprised a fascinating bunch of actors: You had the divine Shirley Jones, the aloof, carrot-addicted Susan Dey, the not-yet-broken Bonaduce, and the flippy-haired teen icon to end all flippy-haired teen icons, David Cassidy. Their physical resemblance says it all, but Zac Efron's pouty angst is built for a spirited rendition of "I Think I Love You." Hell, if he grew out his mane, he could play Susan too.

The Flick:
When Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) are forced to seek refuge during a thunderstorm, they make their way to a nearby castle. The owner of said castle is Dr. Frank-n-Furter (Tim Curry), a transvestite scientist. His home is ripe with colorful characters like, Riff Raff (Richard O’Brien) the handyman, Magenta (Patricia Quinn) the domestic, and Rocky (Peter Hinwood) Frank’s plaything and creation. It doesn’t take long for Frank to seduce both Janet and Brad (his devilish charm is hard to resist), then chaos and much singing and dancing ensue.
While The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a box-office failure, it took on another life as a midnight movie. Its campy, sexually charged, musical/sci-fi/horror hybrid nature made it a perfect fit for cult film status. The live shadow performances featuring fans dressed as the characters from the film acting out scenes in front of the screen,...

The "Glee"cast may go racy for GQ, but when it comes to paying homage to the salacious "Rocky Horror Picture Show," they're dressed far more demurely.
On "The Rocky Horror Glee Show" episode Tuesday night (Oct. 26), New Directions takes on the cult classic film in which strait-laced couple Brad and Janet's (originally Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon) adventures when they stumble upon transvestite/mad scientist Dr. Frank-n-Furter (Tim Curry) and his castle full of wacky partygoers. Rocky (Peter Hinwood) is Frank-n-Furter's creation, a perfect golden Adonis.
Rocky sports what one may describe as "tighty goldies" in the film. On the show, however, the gold lamé bottoms get a looser and longer fit on Sam (Chord Overstreet).
"Chord was an awesome sport about it," Emmy-nominated costume designer Lou Eyrich tells Zap2it. "We couldn't go quite as short and tight as the original. We did have to clean it up just a little bit.
