- Born in Sydney, John lived his first eight years of childhood in Boggabri - a country town in NSW - where he first used the family's 8MM film camera in 1956, when floods came close to the town. Then, in 1958, the family moved back to Sydney, living at Balmoral and John went to school in Mosman. While still at school, John played drums, trumpet and saxaphone in school bands as well as after-school groups. Moving between classic, jazz and rock, he finally settled on rock. Playing with a professional rock group in his last year at school, he changed out of school uniform and did his homework in the back of the band's van. After completing school, he worked fulltime in music. There was a studio production course at a local education centre and he enrolled in that course during the day for something to do - and to better understand the medium since the band was making TV appearances. This lead to an interest in production generally and, since music was mostly a night-time job, he looked for a job in a studio. A rare thing in those days, there were very few studios around! John's first "proper" job was at The Film Academy, painting sets, sweeping floors, pushing the dolly, carrying lights, rewinding films, helping the Editors after hours and on weekends. After a year, he looked for a job at Australia's ABC-TV. Taking the first job that came along, he had a mereoric rise from Assistant Storeman to Film Library Assistant to Assistant Film Editor all in the space of ten weeks. John stayed in the ABC Editing Department for another ten years. As Assistant to Richard Francis-Bruce and Ray Alchin, John worked on most of the big drama shows going through the ABC in those years, 1970-1980, becoming an Editor in 1974. Leaving the ABC in late 1980, John worked freelance with Grundy's, Kennedy-Miller and others. He was Post-Production Supervisor for many McElroy & McElroy productions, Head of Post Production for Crawford Productions and Supervising Editor at Channel TEN. With the birth of a son, later a daughter, John decided against working on productions which required travel away from home for extended periods. So John opened his own editing studio in 1994 and operated it until 1998, closing the studio in order to concentrate on Producing and Directing TV Commercials and Corporate Videos.- IMDb Mini Biography By: John Hollands
