If films and series about queer Americans in the 20th century can sometimes feel like a march through collective trauma, well, much of the 20th century was traumatic for the LGBTQ community. And Showtime’s new limited series “Fellow Travelers” (adapted from Thomas Mallon’s novel by Ron Nyswaner) includes a lot of it, from the lavender panic of the McCarthy era through the White Night riots in the aftermath of Harvey Milk’s assassination to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. But woven throughout those momentous events, along with the star-crossed romance between Hawkins Fuller (Matt Bomer) and Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), are historically accurate moments of queer joy. Yes, gay culture existed (and thrived!) pre-Stonewall.
“I was the only person employed longer on the show than our researcher, Louis Gropman,” Nyswaner told IndieWire. That attention to detail shows throughout, from the opening credits (a montage of real photos...

Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey star in the Showtime series “Fellow Travelers” as lovers who meet in the ’50s at a time when homosexuality is still outlawed, and whose tumultuous relationship continues through the ’80s.
The emotional drama, which is based on the 2007 novel by Thomas Mallon, encompasses the McCarthy hearings, the war protests of the ’60s, the decadent disco ’70s and the AIDS crisis.
Here’s who plays who in the series and where you’ve seen them before.

From the opening verse of Steve Wonder’s “If It’s Magic” to its closing image of a teary remembrance framed by an American landmark, “Fellow Travelers” doesn’t bother disguising itself. The hallmarks of a tragic romance are as plain as the plastic nose on Senator Joseph McCarthy’s face, so Showtime’s eight-part limited series embraces its unmistakable genre staples, leaning into its historical framework to evoke added pathos for our paired protagonists. After all, if you’re telling a decades-spanning gay love story reaching from the Lavender Scare through the 1980s AIDS crisis, then you’re going to cross some trodden territory.
Like an austere companion piece to “Angels in America” by way of Douglas Sirk, creator and writer Ron Nyswaner’s unabashed melodrama doesn’t suffer by comparison (to either giant) as much as it carves its own gripping (if worn) path through earnestness, insight, and passion.

Oscar nominee Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) brings Thomas Mallon’s 2007 bestselling novel Fellow Travelers to life in a Showtime limited series starring Matt Bomer (The Normal Heart) and Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton). The first episode of the eight-episode season will stream on Friday, October 27, 2023 on Paramount+ with Showtime before premiering on Showtime on October 29 at 9pm Et/Pt.
“Bomer plays charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who maintains a financially rewarding, behind-the-scenes career in politics. Hawkins avoids emotional entanglements – until he meets Tim Laughlin (Bailey), a young man who’s brimming with idealism and religious faith. The DC Universe continues to shrink, as continued cuts from the shakeup at HBO Max are revealed. The latest? Titans and Doom Patrol, which we’re now finding out are airing their final seasons. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the news wasn’t shocking to the producers on both shows, as everyone saw the writing on the wall when James Gunn and Peter Safran were brought in to reinvigorate the DC franchise. But the source notes that the decision to end both Greg Berlanti produced series came before the duo arrived. Knowing what was coming, the writers shaped the final season arcs so their characters could have a proper ending at the end of Season 4. Titans (Ben Mark Holzberg / HBO Max) “While these will be the final seasons of Titans and Doom Patrol, we are very proud of these series and excited for fans to see their climactic endings. We...

The only thing you really need to know about Designated Survivor, Keifer Sutherland‘s new show in which he plays a low-level cabinet member who, obviously, survives to become President of the United States, is that you have to watch the second episode before deciding anything.
The pros and cons of the pilot episode are difficult to pull out of the massive establishment the show is trying to throw at you, and while normally that wouldn’t be an excuse that lets a show off the hook, in this case, the effort requires that there be an awful lot to do.
Sutherland nails the complexities of this curious role, which has him taking on a lot of emotional positions in just over 40 minutes. The show itself manages to balance forcing his character into one awkward position after another and bringing in the plots and players that are going to keep this train rolling.

How Hulu’s ‘11.22.63’ crafted a more intimate look at Lee Harvey Oswald than Stephen King’s book did
John F. Kennedy’s assassination: It’s a part of American history that launched over 50 years of debate and speculation. The questions of what really happened at Dealey Plaza and who this man Lee Harvey Oswald was have been the subjects of countless books. Stephen King added his own book to that collection — a fictional take on this history, though one with a lot of historical research involved. The Master of Horror blended together elements of political intrigue, suspense, mystery, and romance with his 2011 book 11/22/63, about a schoolteacher who travels back in time to prevent JFK’s assassination. The eight-part series based on the book and produced by J.J. Abrams debuts today on Hulu. New episodes will be released weekly on Mondays on the streaming service. During the three years (five in the book) that James Franco’s time-traveling Jake Epping spends in the past, leading up to the fateful...

Emily Hampshire is in the unique position of being on two of the coolest shows on television right now. You’ll find her in 12 Monkeys on Syfy as Jennifer Goines, the mental institution resident and daughter of the creator of “the virus.” She’s also in the CBC show (though it airs in the U.S. if you have the right channel) Schitt’s Creek, and she plays Stevie, the motel clerk who can’t believe the screwy “rich” people who now live in her motel.
You should really check out both shows, though they could hardly be any different, and Emily has great roles in both. 12 Monkeys obviously is what it is, and she seems to almost be channeling Ally Sheedy in some very odd sense (that is probably specific to me), but to go into a show with Eugene and Dan Levy, and Catherine O’Hara, and steal the show…...

Syfy is no stranger to taking risks, or making shows and movies with odd concepts, but basing a series on a cult-popular, 20-year-old, sci-fi film, which is itself loosely based on another film from the early ’60s, is… bold. 12 Monkeys is that bold effort, and apart from all the other problems inherent in such an beastt, there are a lot of fans you’re likely to irritate, and Syfy is already after a fair portion of the “rabid fan” demographic, just as a general rule.
In this spin on the tale, James Cole (Aaron Standford) travels back in time from a future that has been decimated by a plague. A clue from that future leads him to Dr. Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull), who he needs to lead him to Leland Goines (Zeljko Ivanek). The theory being that, given the only information we have, killing Goines will prevent the plague from happening.

12 Monkeys is coming to Syfy on January 16th, and you can finally get a look at what’s coming. Obviously inspired by the film, and the massive cult following that has continued to grow over the years, the show follows a time traveler who comes back to prevent the plague that has decimated the human race and left the planet in chaos.
The trailer lets you in on the fact that things are probably a lot more complicated than they seem, and it may be that no one actually knows what’s going on.
If the trailer is any accurate guide, this is going to turn into one of the most interesting shows in quite a while, and one that is going to hook a lot of people. Take a look above, and mark your calendar.

The shows you get out of Lifetime can be pretty hit or miss. That's generally a good thing as far as I'm concerned. You either love Drop Dead Diva, or you hate it, and I for one appreciate the "not for everyone" approach to show design. It's a recipe that gets trickier when you're venturing out into the massively overpopulated world of crime shows though, and Lifetime's new efforts, The Protector and Against the Wall, are faced with a tough road with genre norms butting heads against network image.
Shows focusing on cops and/or crime aren't well-suited to flights of fancy, or niche shtick, like several of Lifetime's other working models, and when people think Lifetime, a network that's going to suck in crime show fans is not exactly what leaps to mind.
I'm still not convinced by Lifetime's effort at balancing things with The Protector.

Nikita left us with one heck of a cliff-hanger a few weeks ago. While Alex had managed to escape her drug haze and return to her apartment, Nikita returned to her own hide-out to discover that Michael had found out where she lives and works.
It appears that the next new episode (which is scheduled to air on Thursday, April 7) will pick up where the last one left off. Michael will be confronting Nikita, not only about her hide-out, but also the fact that she set up Alex as her mole and sent her into Division. But Michael offers her an opportunity to keep her secrets. He tells her that she can find Kasim (the man who killed his family) within 24 hours and he won't tell a soul. But if she fails, he'll tell Percy everything he knows.

There's a new cop show on the TV lineup. The Canadian drama The Bridge (Saturday, 8/7c, CBS) premiered July 10 and introduced viewers to Frank Leo, a dedicated beat officer who is fed up with the corrupt police brass. He takes action by getting elected union leader, making him some powerful new enemies who have already proven they'll go to great lengths to bring him down.
But it's nothing Frank can't handle, according to the guy who plays him: Aaron Douglas, who likens the character to Tony Soprano...

I used to watch the old TV version of Nikita and liked it, but I really have no current opinion one way or the other about this remake (except, perhaps, resenting it for pushing Supernatural to Fridays). On the other hand, I have to acknowledge the fact that Maggie Q. looks great. Seriously. This new show will begin airing on Thursday nights at 9:00 p.m. (see the CW's full fall schedule) in the fall.
Check out the promo photos below and then go take a look at the new Nikita sneak peek we just posted.

Ryan Kelley and Scott Bailey in Prayers for Bobby
(Photo: Ben Mark Holzberg/Lifetime)
We've been anticipating the upcoming Lifetime movie Prayers for Bobby with cautious optimism ... on the one hand, the format is a frequent punchline to jokes that usually have "has-been" or "Meredith Baxter Birney" somewhere in the setup. But on the other, the material and the talent involved are far above par.
Sigourney Weaver stars in and also produced the film, which is based on the true story of Mary Griffith, a woman whose son Bobby killed himself after his parents would not accept him as gay, and who went on to become a crusader for gay rights herself.
After the jump we've got a slew of production stills from the movie as well as the first preview, and from all accounts it looks like our optimism will pay off when the movie airs on January 24th.
