In 2017, a number of sources confirmed that Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama, had secured an internship with Harvey Weinstein, the former Hollywood producer being accused of s*xual harassment.
The 72-year-old was given a 23-year prison sentence after being found guilty in 2020 of first-degree criminal s*xual act and third-degree r*pe. However, in the case that served as a catalyst for the MeToo movement, New York’s highest court on Thursday overturned the Oscar-winning producer’s 2020 s*x crime conviction.

In light of this, social media took to X, bringing up a unique connection between the 44th President of the United States and Weinstein. Having said that, the news of Malia Obama interning for The Weinstein Company’s co-founder has caused quite an uproar among the public.

The musical fantasy film Cats, released in 2019, turned out to be a box-office bomb despite the big names attached to it. To start with, the movie was based on American composer and impresario of musical theatre, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s eponymous Broadway musical.
A still from Cats
Webber’s Broadway musical Cats has impressed millions of fans over the years. However, the movie adaptation failed to bring the same magic to the screens and became a huge disappointment for the composer. So much so, that it led to the impresario buying a dog just to live with the trauma of having his musical butchered for the screens.

David Seidler, the London-born playwright and screenwriter best known for “The King’s Speech,” has died while on a fly-fishing vacation in New Zealand, as per a report in The Guardian. His spokesperson said he was in the location he most revered, doing the activity he most loved when he passed: “It is exactly as he would have scripted it.” The winner of the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay for the Colin Firth-led film was 86 years old.
Seidler’s career began in Australian television in the late 1960s. He came to the United States in the early 1980s, working for the soap opera “Another World,” then writing television movies like “Malice in Wonderland,” something of an early version of the series “Feud” as it concerned Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons starring Jane Alexander and Elizabeth Taylor. David Seidler, the Academy Award-winning writer of the 2010 film “The King’s Speech,” died on Saturday. No cause of death was given. He was 86 years old.
Seidler’s film took home both Best Original Screenplay and several other Academy Awards at the 2011 ceremony, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. The movie told the story of King George VI (Colin Firth), who battled a stutter, and his relationship with speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush).
Telling the story of George VI was a longtime dream of Seidler’s because he also grew up with a stutter. As relayed by the Stuttering Foundation, Seidler contended with the condition from his third birthday until the age of 16. He explained, “I had huge trouble with the ‘H’ sound, so when the telephone rang, I would break into a cold sweat, because I couldn’t say ‘hello.'”

We were, of course, prepared for a celebrity-crammed spectacle due to the luxury booth presence of Travis Kelce's substantially famous girlfriend, but this gridiron rematch between last year's combatants, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, brought out more than just arguably the most famous pop star on the planet. The only pop star in that aforementioned argument, Beyoncé, was there with her hip-hop god husband Jay-Z! Can football (the American version) deliver a new audience to football (the European version)?
Paramount+ and CBS Sports are betting that it can.

As of this writing the frontrunner to win this year’s Oscar for Best Original Screenplay is “The Holdovers” with 69/20 odds based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. What was previously behind it in second place was “Barbie,” yet the Academy recently declared that script to be adapted despite Warner Bros. campaigning it as original. With “Barbie” out of the way, “Past Lives” is now in second place in this category with 4/1 odds. But I think it actually has a shot of taking down “The Holdovers” for the win.
When it comes to Alexander Payne movies at the Oscars, they’ve so far gone one of two ways. In a previous piece for Gold Derby, I referenced how all but one Best Picture Oscar winner since 2008 came from filmmakers who had never directed a Best Picture nominee before. The only exception is Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s “Birdman” in 2014; his prior Best Picture bid was for “Babel” back in 2006. Let’s dig into the last 15 years of winners, shall we?
SEEOscars alert: Watch out for ‘Barbie’ scene-stealers America Ferrera and Rhea Perlman
In 2008 “Slumdog Millionaire” was the juggernaut of the film awards season, winning eight Oscars, which is still more than any film since then. It was directed by Danny Boyle, who at the time only made one other Oscar nominated film, 1996’s “Trainspotting,” which was recognized with a nom for Best Adapted Screenplay.
In 2009 the race famously came down to two films from directors who were previously married: James Cameron‘s “Avatar” and Kathryn Bigelow‘s “The Hurt Locker.

There are a multitude of ways to incorporate characters singing on screen in a film. Traditionally, the actors record the tracks separately from their on-set line delivery and lip-sync during the actual filming, as shown with Ryan Gosling and his army of Kens in Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" movie for "I'm Just Ken." But every once in a while, a filmmaker will elect to record the raw, on-set delivery of a vocal performance. Director Tom Hooper took this route with both "Les Miserables" and "Cats," with ... one turning out infinitely better than the other. There are pros and cons to both approaches, but the second option is exponentially riskier. And yet, "Hunger Games" franchise director Francis Lawrence went that route on "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" with star Rachel Zegler's performance as Lucy Gray Baird.
In the book as well as in the movie, Lucy Gray Baird is a performer.

This has been reflected in so many ways, not least the rise in movie attendance. The road to recovery has been long and painstaking, but moviegoing is back in vogue, with viewings increasing by over 60% last year, a trend likely to continue. Another reason for this growing popularity is the way movies are reflecting trends such as inclusivity. More and more LGBT-oriented films are being released, especially titles focusing on trans characters. Let’s take a closer look at these societal shifts, with the bonus of six movie suggestions where trans storylines are captivating audiences.
Why Inclusivity is Important
Minority groups have always had good reason to feel excluded from mainstream society, with fewer social opportunities, and sometimes facing outright prejudice and discrimination. The equality of...

Exclusive: Channel 4 may have escaped privatization, but in at least one respect it remains at the mercy of ministers.
The UK commercial broadcaster is waiting on the government to approve the hire of four new board members after a recruitment process that has dragged on for almost a year.
People close to the process hope it will be resolved soon amid pressure to inject diversity into a Channel 4 non-executive team that has been all-white since January 2022.
Ofcom, which oversees the recruitment of Channel 4 board members, engaged headhunters last October to search for four non-executive directors, but the process has been repeatedly delayed and ministers are still yet to rubber stamp preferred candidates.
The government first asked Ofcom to pause the board hires last December as the sale of Channel 4 was ditched after Rishi Sunak became the UK’s fifth prime minister in six years.

The sun was out earlier in the day, and the stars, including Alicia Vikander, husband Michael Fassbender, Russell Crowe and competition jury member Patricia Clarkson came out for the Friday evening gala opening ceremony of the 57th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
The black-tie opening event for what has been called Central Europe’s biggest cinema party was followed by a free performance by British electronic band Morcheeba just outside the venue, the Hotel Thermal, which serves as the festival’s headquarters. Despite some recurring rainfall, fans came out in big numbers for stargazing as the celebrities arrived and later for grooving to the music.
Both big stars of the evening being honored with lifetime achievement awards also received very, very warm local welcomes. Upon her arrival, Vikander signed some autographs and posed for selfies before entering the venue via its red carpet. Upon entering the event hall,...

Scottish actor Ewan McGregor and Swedish Oscar winner Alicia Vikander will be honored at the 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Both will receive Karlovy Vary’s President’s Award, a lifetime achievement honor.

Exclusive: The colorful life of Ecuador’s former President León Febres-Cordero is being adapted for a feature biopic by his grandson, producer James Leon of 8th Gear Entertainment.
Ted Field will produce the film alongside Leon, with writer-director Fernando Guzzoni (Blanquita) signed on to pen the screenplay. President Febres-Cordero’s daughter, Maria Liliana Febres – Cordero, will serve as Executive Producer.
The Spanish-language movie will be shot entirely in Ecuador, with principal photography slated to begin in spring 2024. We understand the film will follow a similar narrative to historical biopics like Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour and Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech by telling the story of a political figure through the effect their decisions have on themselves and their family. Liliana, one of Febres-Cordero’s daughters, will feature at the center of the story and voice the contents of her father’s diaries in the movie.

In what’s a shockingly early first look, Universal brought “Wicked: Part One” to CinemaCon audiences.
The rough and unfinished footage opened with a young green witch trying to master her magical training and being told by instructor Michelle Yeoh she needs to harness her emotions. The footage was mixed in with the filmmakers talking about how and why they made the movie. We get solid looks at all the major cast members, including plenty of interaction between Erivo and Grande as the former has a complicated reaction to a gesture of friendship. “Maybe, some of us are just different.” We get a bit of grand dancing, Emerald City production values (nine million real tulips planted) and flying monkey action scenes.
The final montage of fantastical (and source-faithful) images are, of course, set to the chorus of “Defying Gravity.”

Seven Kings Must Die concludes the story of Uhtred Ragnarsson, a decades-long frenemy of the English crown since the days of King Alfred the Great. It’s largely adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s final instalment in his Saxon Stories books, War Lord, along with elements of the two previous novels, and tracks the contested succession to the royal throne following the death of King Edward.
A significant time jump has taken place since the final moments of The Last Kingdom season five, during which Aelswith, Hild and Eadith have all passed or moved away. A core of male characters remains though, including Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric, Father Pyrlig and Aldhelm. They’re joined by brand new characters, as below.
Laurie Davidson as Ingilmundr
The biggest addition to The Last Kingdom’s regular cast is Aethelstan’s new trusted advisor, Ingilmundr, a Danish-born Christian who shows a powerful influence over King Edward’s successor.

Set mostly in England, back before it was officially called England — and centuries before Great Britain was so much as a glint in the eye of James I — director Ed Bazalgette’s workmanlike historical epic “The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die” wraps up the events of “The Last Kingdom,” the Netfix drama series based on Bernard Cornwell’s “Saxon Tales” novels. Playing like “Game of Thrones” with more history and fewer dragons, the film opens with several smaller kingdoms, including Northumbria, Mercia and East Anglia, gearing up for a power struggle exacerbated by the recent death of Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, and worsened by the surreptitious attempts of the Danes to sow discord.
The hero of the hour is Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), a young Saxon and the protagonist of the TV series, who fans will know was raised by Danes after a Danish attack wiped out most...

Any belief that the Oscars award the right films, directors and performances has faded over the years.
While every ceremony has a smattering of correct decisions – trophies handed to the right people for the right films – more often than not, the pervading feeling is one of pessimism caused by a deluge of undeserving recipients.

Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman are joining the fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy, Et has exclusively learned. The two actors, who are married in real life, will play “a mild-mannered married couple named Jean and Gene, who are college professors,” Mullally told Et’s Will Marfuggi while attending the premiere for Party Down season 3 on Wednesday in Los Angeles.
“I mean, the deal’s not quite closed but let’s just pretend it is,” she said, revealing they start filming “in a couple of weeks.”
The revelation comes after reported rumors that the two former Parks and Recreation stars were joining the Netflix series and are among several new roles being added to season 4. And just two weeks ago, the main cast, including Elliot Page and Tom Hooper, posted a photo of themselves as they reunited for a table read as they get to work on the upcoming episodes.

Ninety-four films have won the Academy Award for Best Picture since the first Oscars ceremony was held in 1928. Thanks to the technological innovations of streaming, these winners – some all-time classics, some retroactive headscratchers – are all available to watch online. Last year’s winner, “Coda,” bypassed theaters almost entirely on its way to the streaming service Apple TV+. It’s never been easier to watch every single Best Picture Oscar winner, should you choose to do so.
This year, a number of Best Picture nominees are already streaming – including the favorite, “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which is available on Showtime. But before the 95th Best Picture winner is crowned on March 12, you could choose some past winners to catch up with from our list of where to watch every Best Picture Oscar winner – from “Wings” to “Coda” and everything in between. If you start now and watch at least three a day until the ceremony,...

The Oscar front-runners for Best Picture were “Argo” and “Lincoln” with a possibility of “Django Unchained,” “Life of Pi” or “Silver Linings Playbook.” It seems like just a few years ago we were lining up to see these films in theaters, and debating who’d win big on the industry’s most celebrated night. But it’s actually been a decade since we were surprised by some snubs, astonished at some wins and a bit flummoxed by the host singing about “boobies.” The ceremony is always at its best when shockers abound, and with an irreverent host like Seth MacFarlane, it’s not surprising that February 24, 2013, was a roller coaster night. Let’s enjoy an Oscar flashback 10 years ago.
MacFarlane infamously opened the 85th Academy Awards ceremony by communicating with a “future” Captain Kirk (William Shatner), who offered examples of how MacFarlane would ruin the ceremony, such as the number “We Saw Your Boobs.

Eddie Redmayne, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast — which was recorded late last year in front of an audience at the Newport Beach Film Festival, where he was honored with the fest’s Icon Award — is a British actor who is only 41, but he has already amassed an incredible body of work on the stage and screens big and small. Over the course of his career, he’s won an Oscar, a Tony, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA Award and two Olivier Awards.
In terms of his work in film, he is best known for his performance as Dr. Stephen Hawking in 2014’s The Theory of Everything, for which he received many of those accolades, but he also gave memorable turns in 2011’s My Week with Marilyn, 2012’s Les Miserables, 2015’s The Danish Girl, 2020’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 and the...

As much as we love Mystery Science Theater 3000, Red Letter Media, and The Flop House, it’s time that we face the truth: there’s really no such thing as a bad movie. Sure, there are movies we may personally dislike for one reason or another, but when we use phrases like “so bad it’s good” or “guilty pleasure,” we’re twisting ourselves into knots trying to say something quite simple: this movie makes me happy, regardless of its quality or what other people think.
The film-centric social media site Letterboxd has made that fact plain with a newly-released list of movies with low ratings and over 1000 likes. In other words, these are movies that users give one or two stars (out of five), and yet still like by pressing the “heart” icon.
The list of fifty includes many titles familiar to fans of the aforementioned shows and podcasts.

On Wednesday (January 11), the Directors Guild of America will announce the nominees for the 75th annual edition of the DGA Awards. The DGA is aces at forecasting the eventual Oscar winner. Since the guild aligned itself with the academy calendar in 1950, 64 DGA champs have gone on to win at the Academy Awards as well; the most recent of the eight misses came in 2020 when Sam Mendes (“1917) won with the guild but Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”) took home the Oscar.
But be warned: the Directors Guild of America does less well predicting the eventual five Academy Awards nominees. There are usually one or two differences between the slate selected by the 16,000 plus members of the DGA, which includes helmers of TV fares and commercials, and the choices of the 550+ members of the directors branch of the academy.
For the first 15 years of the DGA Awards, there were anywhere from four to 18 nominees.

Ten years ago, there were five clear frontrunners for the Oscar for Best Director of 2012: Ben Affleck for “Argo,” Kathryn Bigelow for “Zero Dark Thirty,” Tom Hooper for “Les Misérables,” Ang Lee for “Life of Pi” and Steven Spielberg for “Lincoln. But when the nominations were announced, only Lee and Spielberg made the cut. Replacing Affleck, Bigelow and Hooper were Michael Haneke for “Amour,” David O. Russell for “Silver Linings Playbook” and Benh Zeitlin for “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”
Talk about an Oscar race going wild.
The lesson learned was that the Directors Branch of the Academy can be very unpredictable. They might overlook a big Hollywood star for helming a critical and commercial success, and instead go with an obscure director for their work on a tiny arthouse film. With that said, we should be prepared for some surprises in the directing category when the nominations are...

The current awards season marks a decade since Anne Hathaway, a contender this year for her role in James Gray’s Armageddon Time, took home a wealth of supporting actress awards — including the BAFTA, Golden Globe, SAG Award and Oscar — for her turn as Fantine in Les Misérables. The actress had already established herself as a movie star in such films as The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada and Brokeback Mountain, and she scored her first Oscar nomination, for best actress, with 2008’s Rachel Getting Married.
Oscar gold would arrive five years later, with Tom Hooper’s big screen adaptation of the stage musical, in which Hathaway, as a starving sex worker, erodes onscreen, losing her hair and teeth, croaking out the heartbreaking “I Dreamed a Dream” before dying. Her performance was hailed as a standout among an all-star cast led by...

A series by Juan Carlos Ojano. Introduction / Explanation
After Kathryn Bigelow’s historic Director win at the previous Oscars for The Hurt Locker, the 2010 roster of nominees returned to the usual all-male lineup. The eventual five were pretty much unquestioned. David Fincher was the early frontrunner for Facebook drama The Social Network. Darren Aronofsky and David O. Russell received their first nominations in this category for the psychological horror Black Swan and the sports drama The Fighter, respectively. The inclusion of the Coen Brothers was considered a semi-surprise for the late-breaking Western True Grit. Ultimately, the winner was Tom Hooper for the Best Picture-winning historical drama The King’s Speech.
Given that context, it is still a bit discouraging to see the return to normal especially with two female-directed films also up for Best Picture: Lisa Cholodenko’s dramedy The Kids are All Right and Debra Granik’s mystery drama Winter’s Bone.

Team Experience will be discussing each Oscar category as we head into the precursors. Here's Eric Blume and Glenn Dunks...
The Fabelmans
Eric: Glenn, before we get to this year's nominees, I just want to celebrate the Academy's relative great taste in this category compared to most others. It's phenomenal that only once in the last 14 years has this award gone to a straight white American man. In those years, we've had three women, two Asian men, two Brits, and a French guy who have won, plus three great Latin filmmakers (including double wins for Iñárritu and Cuarón). It's the category where they now have diversity and true talent. I might have chosen differently in any given year, but none of the filmmakers are bad or untalented. Tom Hooper beating David Fincher didn't land back then and certainly hasn't aged well, but regardless it's a great category filled with remarkable work.
