Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian: 1955 for "Great River" and 1976 for "Lamy of Sante Fe". His literary preoccupation was with the American Southwest (with special emphasis on New Mexico) and the pioneering spirit of ordinary men and women, from the time of Spanish colonial rule to the influx of Anglo-Americans their contact with the native people of the area.
