Language is paramount in Pontypool, Bruce McDonald’s Canadian (don’t call it zombie) thriller. The film concerns a shock jock DJ and his pair of female colleagues who manage a radio station over the course of a morning as a word-based pathogen destroys the surrounding community.
Based on the book by Tony Burgess (who also wrote the screenplay), the film is a single location thriller that relies heavily on its small cast and mildly claustrophobic setting. Dialogue and audio flesh out not only the world and the looming threat; it also captures the power and impact of language.
It’s vital that Grant Mazzy (Canadian screen legend Stephen McHattie) is something of a disgrace at the beginning of the film. He’s only recently...

Valentine’s Day is upon us, and as we’re doing our annual rewatches of My Bloody Valentine (both versions—don’t skimp) or 2001’s Valentine, it’s important to remember that we have another holiday-appropriate horror movie to add to the fun. And it’s a film that happens to be celebrating its 15th birthday this year. Happy birthday to Pontypool, a zombie film that doesn’t get nearly enough attention, despite the fact that it brings a truly unique vision to the table.
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2008, Pontypool is a zombie movie like no other. Like other recent favorites, it puts its own stamp on the material and creates something memorable. It rethinks the idea of what makes a zombie, taking the things we know and love about the mythology and bending them into a different form to create something unique, while still paying...

"You have to understand one thing - we start out as a bunch of people, but we end up as one." Dark Star Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for the wacky weird indie film Dreamland, the latest from eccentric Canadian filmmaker Bruce McDonald. This originally premiered at Fantasia and a few other genre film festivals last year, and is arriving on VOD this summer. The single-line description: On the night of the strangest wedding in cinema history, a grotesque gang boss hires a stone cold killer to bring him the finger of a fading, drug-addicted jazz legend. The film stars Stephen McHattie, Henry Rollins, Juliette Lewis, Tómas Lemarquis, Lisa Houle, Hana Sofia Lopes, Barbara Hellemans, and Guillaume Kerbush. At first glance, this reminds me of The Boondock Saints, with the guns and shoot outs and crazy scenes. Not sure what to make of all this madness. Here's the first...

"...'William Cassidy' (Richings) is a man who has had steady interactions with extraterrestrials for the last 40 years, which has left him so filled with paranoia and fear that he now spends his days as a blogger living in seclusion.
"He contacts 'Joe Sullivan' (Adam Seybold), an alien researcher and conspiracy theorist blogger, and invites him to his home on the night of a solar event that Cassidy believes could be potentially dangerous to Earth.
"The film switches back and forth between footage from that night to a later day where Cassidy is being interrogated by an unseen person..."
Cast also includes Lisa Houle as 'Dr. Tobin', Mark Gibson as 'Agent Brinkman', Justin Darmanin as 'Agent Falco',...

The night of a solar flare turns into an evening of eerie events in Ejecta, a new alien abduction film coming out on Blu-ray August 18th from Scream Factory. We've been provided with three copies of the Julian Richings-starring movie to give away.
Ejecta: "A horrific alien invasion forces two men to fight for their lives during one universe-altering night of terror. This nerve-shredding film stars Julian Richings (Cube, X-Men: The Last Stand) in a tour-de-force performance as William Cassidy, a man who, following decades of frightening extraterrestrial encounters, is now trapped in a living hell of fear and paranoia. On the evening of a massive solar flare, Cassidy invites paranormal researcher Joe Sullivan (Adam Seybold, Exit Humanity) to his secluded home in the woods. What occurs there will change both men — and possibly the Earth — forever. Lisa Houle (Pontypool) and Dee Wallace (The Howling) also star."

Calling back to the minimalist sci-fi stories of yesteryear, Ejecta blends found footage camerawork with an Area 51-esque experiment that wants to prove the existence of alien lifeforms. Penned by genre favorite Tony Burgess (Pontypool/Septic Man), it’s a story about paranoia that hits on a possession arc we typically see connected to exorcisms and demonic overtakings – but it’s not one that dares to push the envelope.
What’s been said about extraterrestrial invasions is restated by Ejecta in a lot of the same ways, which only reminds us of past films that have executed interplanetary thrills with far more energy. Whether you’re thinking of the basement scene in Signs, or any first-person chase scene from the Vicious brothers’ Extraterrestrial, directors Chad Archibald and Matt Wiele are only able to produce another bland case of flying saucers and gangly spacemen. Nothing more, and nothing less.

It can be really hard to create new and compelling sci-fi stories involving aliens these days, especially on an indie scale. That’s why I will give Ejecta and its filmmakers, Chad Archibald and Matt Wiele, a lot of credit for what they've put together here. Unfortunately though, the scares are as scarce as movie’s alien antagonists, the story suffers from a bit of an identity crisis, and the lackluster conclusion left me feeling pretty underwhelmed by the time it was over.
Ejecta follows William Cassidy (Julian Richings), a troubled man who believes he’s being tormented by an alien life form and has taken to posting his theories online over the years out of frustration for his otherworldly predicament. One night, he reaches out to a documentarian (Adam Seybold) about his suspicions that aliens are going to be returning during a cosmic event and the two set out...

Often, with indie horror flicks, you have to accept that you're watching a demonstration of ingenuity rather than a coherent film: "Here's what I can do with two sets, five actors, and a couple weekends," the directors seem to be telling us — "Imagine what I'd do with a real budget." I can't speak with authority as to how Chad Archibald and Matt Wiele's Ejecta came together. It's half an interrogation and possession cheapie, in which a tough-cookie government agent (or something) played by the commanding and appealing Lisa Houle questions a UFO abductee (Julian Richings), and it's also half a not-bad found-footage alien footchase. But despite a convoluted timeline it's hard to buy that the script was much fussed over. Houle gets stuck with mouth...

Aliens can be annoying, especially with all the probing and implanting they seem to do. Ejecta features a character that shows just why this is the case, especially if the aliens use the victims head as a radio conductor for their conversations. When people who complain about such things are normally seen as crazy, what happens if they are telling the truth? Then you get a film like Ejecta.
Ejecta focuses on William Cassidy (Julian Richings) who at the beginning of the film is captured by an anonymous group wanting to know the truth about the aliens he says he has encountered. Watching footage found recorded by still missing Joe Sullivan (Adam Seybold) featuring the recent actions of the duo Dr.

Durham County is a very dark crime drama that takes place in a fictitious suburb of Toronto. There's a killer in the suburb of Durham County and Det. Mike Sweeney (Hugh Dillon) tries to find him/her. Besides, Mike also deal with his inner demons. Note that Michelle Forbes (True Blood) delivers a legendary performance as a manipulator.

Roger Ebert recently made people aware of a video on YouTube called The Open Road London.
The film was taken decades ago. The hustle and bustle of life in the city is enough to make you think that even after all technology has done for us we’re still as busy as ever. The Beefeater who just saunters in the frame, the double-decker busses, the police directing traffic by hand, it’s all very quaint. The amusing thing about this full color...

Low-budget, Canadian and sneaky as hell, Bruce McDonald's "Pontypool" is a movie that restores your faith in the ability of genre movies to rabbit-punch your limbic system and your frontal lobe at the same time. Just grabbing the ingenious premise with two hands is a moviehead thrill: the setting is the local radio station for a tiny Ontario town, so small that it occupies not its own building but the basement of a church. The protagonist is Grant Mazzy (Stephen McHattie), a grizzled, boozy, pretentious shock jock whose downward career spiral has landed him in the provincial wilderness, where his indulgent ramblings are largely unwelcome and where he's only supposed to deliver weather and traffic news. His foils are the patient station manager (Lisa Houle) and a young intern (Georgina Reilly). Amidst the morning-drive drudgery, reports begin to trickle in, of crowds forming and riots beginning and people being chased and torn apart.

Director: Bruce McDonald. Review: Dan King. The shock jock anti-hero of Pontypool is a man whose mouth has landed him in hot water in the past, although not quite as hot as a burgeoning zombie-esque apocalypse! Having been ousted from his high profile job, Grant Mazzy (played by the strangely familiar Stephen McHattie) takes a job presenting a show in the early hours on a local radio station in the snowy town of Pontypool. He presents the show from the basement of the town’s church, along with a young technical assistant and the show’s producer (Lisa Houle), who struggles to control his espousing of conspiracy theory. It is during the show they pick up a police radio transmission regarding an apparent riot at a doctor’s office. As details start to filter through it becomes apparent that the usually docile folk of Pontypool have been infected with a...

If you've seen Bruce McDonald's cerebral zombie flick Pontypool [1], you'll know that it deals with some heady concepts of language and communication, and that it plays out almost like a radio drama in the vein of Orson Welles' War of the Worlds. Based on the book Pontypool Changes Everything by Tony Burgess, the story centers on a radio DJ named Mazzy Star who is hosting a morning show when he starts receiving reports of a "zombie" outbreak relayed by callers live on the air. Originally Bruce McDonald toyed with the idea of making the entire movie filtered through the radio broadcast. Ever wonder what that might have sounded like? This week our friends over at Row Three [2] recently stumbled across a very cool adaptation of the story that takes the radio drama element of the movie to its logical conclusion. The BBC [3] is currently streaming an hour-long Pontypool...

Is there really no escape from the living dead? Zombies have found their way to school curriculum (Max Brooks’ masterful novel World War Z can be found in the required reading section of your book store) and they have always been a part of mainstream cinema from The Night of the Living Dead right up to 28 Weeks Later. Pontypool is one of the more inspired takes on the zombie genre. The film is low budget and high concept. The zombie film, some will say, has become a tired piece of art. George Romero’s recent entries into the zombie canon (Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead) have been a far cry from his groundbreaking original visions in the late 1960’s through late 1970’s. The first 40 minutes of Pontypool marks a return to the roots of not only the zombie picture, but to horror in general. The things not seen are truly horrifying.

Though it’s unfairly playing second fiddle to another, higher profile horror movie also hitting theaters this week, Bruce McDonald’s Pontypool offers a classic case study in the genre’s fullest potential. Drenched in atmospheric malaise, it functions on the base visceral level mandatory for any such effort. At the same time, the screenplay by Tony Burgess (based on his novel "Pontypool Changes Everything") unashamedly stabs at sweeping social relevance with a narrative that condemns the bastardization of the English language that’s a regular feature of our twittered, instant messaged lives and the media fed bombast that enables it. The great, criminally underappreciated Stephen McHattie stars as Grant Mazzy, a cowboy hat affixed shock jock who has tumbled from the heights of his profession to its dregs: hosting a morning show in a small, bleak Ontario town. Joining him at work are his producer Sydney Briar (Lisa Houle) and a new assistant named Laurel Ann...

Maybe it's that they're Canadian, or that they're promoting a very unusual zombie movie, or just that they're good people, but Bruce McDonald, Stephen McHattie and Lisa Houle are a relaxed bunch of people to interview. I had seen the three of the them the night before at a Q&A after the screening of their film Pontypool, and was mostly hoping to be able to ask some questions they hadn't already heard the night before. Turns out director McDonald started the questioning, asking me about the Flip camera I held in my hand and seeming genuinely intrigued by the technology. I had come prepared to talk about the revolutionary Red camera he used to film Pontypool; he wanted to know about my HD cam the size of an iPod. McHattie and Houle are two of the three main stars of Pontypool, a film that documents a zombie infection ...

Talk-radio zombies from Canada
In the wee hours, in the snow-covered Canadian village of Pontypool, DJ Grant Mazzy begins his nightly radio show. The children are asleep, the insomniacs and third-shifters are tuned in, and, if the bizarre reports coming into the station are to be believed, zombies are gradually taking over the town. Mazzy is a deep-voiced, veteran shock jock, a cowboy-hat-wearing troublemaker whose radio show—by his own admission—works best when it pisses people off. As Mazzy explains, a pissed-off listener doesn’t switch stations, plus he might even call his friends and get them mad, too, and when this simple talk-radio strategy of viral anger finds its eerie parallel in a zombie epidemic, Bruce McDonald’s Pontypool begins to throb with horror-tinged social commentary.

Whether they stagger slowly or dash madly, the one constant among cinematic zombies though the years has been that they don’t say much. They moan a lot, and occasionally manage a hungry “Braaaains!” but articulated speech has escaped them. Which means that Bruce McDonald’s Pontypool (opening theatrically in New York City today and also available on-demand from IFC Films) is unique via its very premise: an undead plague in which both the cause and the symptom are spoken words.
And what better place to set such a story than a radio station? Corbin Bernsen’s upcoming Dead Air takes the same tack, but it’s especially appropriate for a movie whose characters might be victimized by the verbal communication they depend on. The central figure (you can’t quite call him a “hero”) is Grant Mazzy (Stephen McHattie), a former big-city shock jock now relegated to the morning...

Tony Burgess’s adaptation of his own novel, Pontypool Changes Everything (in limited theaters on May 29, 2009), is a very strange little movie about a small town DJ named Grant Mazzy (Stephen McHattie), his producer Sydney Briar (Lisa Houle) and the strange morning when their radio show becomes the center of a new breed of virus that infects people through the English language causing violent outbursts and gore-drenched physical reactions…
Having not read the original novel, my guess is that the film version, directed by Bruce McDonald, probably stays quite close to the original novel in premise and plot. Grant Mazzy is a big-town DJ who has been demoted to the local radio morning show at the small Ontario, Canada town of Pontypool at Clsy Radio. Sydney Briar, his producer, is...

Seen one, you've seen them all. That may be how you feel about zombie movies, but not me. I've been a happy, all-but-credulous consumer of the genre going as far back as the Val Lewton-Jacques Tournier gothic romance "I Walked With a Zombie" through George A. Romero's epic "Living Dead" cycle of gory, apocalyptic satires of consumer culture. Matters not to me if the socio-political context is obtrusively embedded into its storyline (as in Romero's "Dawn of the Dead") or if you have to bring whatever metaphorical baggage you can find to the party ("28 Days Later"). There are those who prefer vampires, psycho slashers, business executives or other marauding specters of our cinematic subconscious -- I'm of the zombie species of horror freak.
I will admit, however, to some advance trepidation about "Pontypool" when I heard that Bruce McDonald's zombies-in-the-Great-White-North movie unapologetically wears its social commentary on its stormy freakazoid sleeve.

"Pontypool" reviewby Steve Ramos (3/5) Claustrophobic creepiness replaces splatter in clever zombie thriller "Pontypool." Filmmaker George Romero, kingpin of zombie movies, would laugh at "Pontypool," a horror movie about attacking flesh-eaters with very little splatter. After all, horror fans have come to expect ample bloodletting with zombie thrillers, Romeros films included. Yet, if Romero, and all gore fans for that matter, would sit back and give veteran director Bruce McDonalds sci-fi drama a chance, they would discover a clever, claustrophobic, believably creepy twist on the popular horror movie menace. Pontypool Directed by: Bruce McDonald Written by: Tony Burgess Starring: Stephen McHattie, Lisa Houle, Georgina Reilly Although there is no shortage of filmmaking talent in Canada, it's almost expected that any successful Canadian actors and directors will eventually fly south in pursuit of Hollywood aspirations. Director Bruce McDonald, however, is an anomale. Despite receiving critical acclaim for some of his early films like Dance Me Outside and Hard Core Logo, he has maintained a base of operations in Toronto for a good twenty years, preferring to remain a permanent fixture of Canada's cultural landscape rather than chasing down fame and fortune. Perhaps part of the reason why he has remained north of the border is the fact that his sensibilities are much more attuned to ...
