X-Men ’97 just finished its first season, one of the best things the MCU has ever released. Yet, way back in 1992, Fox Kids almost killed its predecessor before it had a chance to evolve.
In the new documentary special Assembled: X-Men ’97, three of the chief creatives on X-Men: The Animated Series reveal their struggles getting the show off the ground. Producer and director Larry Houston recalls working under Marvel Productions president Margaret Loesch, who always championed the X-Men throughout the ’80s, resulting in misfires like Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends or Pryde of the X-Men but no ongoing series. When Loesch took a role as head of Fox Children’s Network, she brought Houston with her and gave him his shot, with one caveat.
“The folks above her didn’t believe X-Men was gonna do anything,” says writer Julia Lewald, who, along with her husband Eric, worked as a writer on the original show.

*Spoiler warning for X-Men ’97 Episode 10!*
There had been a lot of talks about X-Men ‘97 featuring Morph as a nonbinary character, and evidently, many were still unimpressed with this move. The season finale just brought out a huge surprise for everyone, and clearly, that one scene with Morph and Wolverine left many fans speechless.
Disney+’s X-Men ’97
Even with the legendary director Larry Houston, who helmed the original X-Men animated series, and J.P. Karliak, the voice actor of Morph, explaining how the character’s orientation has always been presented as such, it remained a cause for debate throughout the season.

Larry Houston previously explained via Variety that Morph’s nonbinary status is as easy to understand as the character being a shapeshifter.

The X-Men: The Animated Series was a masterpiece in its finest form, and Larry Houston was one of the producers at the helm of it. Throughout the five seasons that it aired, fans were deeply in love with almost every story arc that the 1992 series decided to adapt. But even after such tremendous success with it, Houston still has one major regret about the show.

This regret is about his not exploring the character arc of a super-powerful yet long-forgotten hero, who was even more closely related to Scott Summers than what the non-comic book readers may expect. This character was Alex Summers, the younger brother of Scott and a mutant himself, best known as ‘Havoc.’ And as it turns out, Houston has immense regrets about it.

X-Men ’97 opened to positive reviews on Disney+ and many critics hailed it as a nostalgic throwback to the original X-Men: The Animated Series. X-Men ’97 dropped its first two episodes on Wednesday on Disney+ and fans were transported back to the nostalgic times of X-Men: The Animated Series. The new series is neither a reboot nor a remake of the old series, but a continuation. The animation team had to work within the parameters of the nineties. The biggest challenge for them was the technological advancements in animation between the original show and this new show.

The '90s gave us some of the best kids' show theme songs of all time, from "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" to "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." But even those classic examples couldn't quite match the sheer ear-wormery of the opening titles to "X-Men: The Animated Series." The beloved Fox Kids show didn't even need lyrics to embed itself in the collective cortex of a generation, who can surely recall its dynamic, synthesized tones in a split second.
Now, Disney has decided to tap into that reservoir of nostalgia with "X-Men '97," an animated streaming show that apes the original's distinctive visual style and picks up where its 1997 series finale left off. Everything we've seen in the lead-up to its release points to a faithful revival, with the easter egg-filled "X-Men '97" trailer promising a show that not only feels aesthetically akin to the original but brings back plenty of the Og voice actors.

While the live-action Marvel Universe is dominated by the Avengers, Marvel comics have had a different character hierarchy. The entire multiverse seemed to revolve around the stories of the X-Men as a whole and while the Avengers were important, they simply weren’t as significant as the mutants. They were the reason for the success of the franchise and the culturally significant impact it has had over decades.
X-Men (2000)
It would seem, that effect does not get brushed past by anyone, as the showrunner of X-Men ’97 revealed an interesting theory he has about the live-action universe that Marvel has created. One that suggests that none of the MCU projects, Sam Rami’s Spider-Man films, and even DC projects would have been successful or existed had it not been for one animated Marvel show.

Mutants are gradually being worked into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and according to Cosmic Circus, the site that says the Midnight Sons might soon be appearing in the MCU, Marvel is looking at X-Men: The Animated Series, which ran on Fox Kids Network for five seasons from 1992 to 1997, as a major reference point as they figure out how to add the X-Men to their franchise. As Cosmic Circus noted, the influence of the animated series can be seen in the appearances of Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Dr. Hank McCoy in The Marvels – as well as (to some degree) Wolverine in next year’s Deadpool 3. Since Marvel has such respect for the animated series, it’s no surprise that they’re also reviving it with a continuation series titled X-Men ’97, which is expected to start streaming on Disney+ sometime soon. 1992's "X-Men" cartoon was the first time Marvel's Merry Mutants got a series all of their own, but was it the first time they appeared in animation? Not quite.
The team were guest stars on the early 1980s series "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends", as was their nemesis Magneto. A few years down the line, Marvel Productions decided to produce an "X-Men" cartoon themselves.
The resulting pilot was "Pryde of the X-Men". "Pryde" boasted animation from Japanese studio Toei ("Dragon Ball Z"), and so looked noticeably more detailed and dynamic than previous Marvel cartoons. Where it did overlap with those older cartoons was the voice cast: the late John Stephenson as Professor X, Michael Bell as Cyclops, Neil Ross as Nightcrawler, Dan Gilvezan as Colossus, and a young Kath Soucie as Kitty.

If you came of age sometime between 1969 and now, there's a good chance you grew up with Scooby-Doo. The snack-loving Great Dane became a mainstay in homes across America when "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!" first premiered, and Mystery Inc.'s reputation kept growing long after Joe Ruby and Ken Spears' groovy series ended its three-season run. In the decades since, Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma have become a global phenomenon, and even during low points in Scooby history, there's still a strong sense of cultural awareness for the lovable pup and his mystery-solving crew.
Scooby fans are also well-known for our strong opinions; with over a hundred Scooby titles to choose from across film, TV, web, comics, and more, Scooby fans have a knack for developing a strong individual sense of what works and what doesn't in the franchise. While most fans may not agree on what Scooby properties...

Disney have already admitted that they plan on shifting their focus towards exclusive streaming content, and there are revivals of two beloved animated shows staring them right in the face. The talk of bringing back cult classic Gargoyles may have quietened down drastically over the last few months, but X-Men: The Animated Series has never strayed too far from the headlines.
The longtime favorite might have wrapped up 23 years ago, but since being added to the Disney Plus library, talk of a revival has frequently reared its head. The 76 episodes are comparable in quality to anything the Fox franchise brought to the big screen, and in some cases handled the serious themes much better than any of the movies did.
Earlier this year, producer Larry Houston revealed that early talks had taken place about potentially doing more, while the rumor mill started churning again when a new promo was created,...

The big screen franchise may have delivered a handful of great movies like Days of Future Past, X2, Deadpool and Logan to name just four of the thirteen installments, but for a lot of people, the best adaptation of Marvel’s comic book mutants was X-Men: The Animated Series. A childhood staple for millions of fans, the show ran for 76 episodes across five seasons between 1992 and 1997, and it still holds up today.
With Disney now having purchased Fox and acquired their former rival’s extensive back catalogue of properties, folks were overjoyed when it was announced that the animated X-Men were heading to Disney Plus. It might have been a Saturday morning cartoon, but the show tackled surprisingly mature themes, similar to how the comic books would address topical issues but wrap them in a superhero story.

Superhero cartoons don’t get much more iconic that X-Men: The Animated Series. Running for 76 episodes between 1992-1997, the show is the best screen adaptation of the mutant squad for many fans, and in recent years its internet fame has grown thanks to 90s nostalgia and the spawning of many a meme. But could Disney capitalize on all this and create a continuation of the show all these years later? It certainly doesn’t sound out of the question.
Series producer and director Larry Houston revealed during a virtual Wizard World panel that the creators have “had talks” with the studio about getting a revival going on Disney Plus. Houston revealed, however, that the project isn’t exactly moving forward at this time and the ball remains in Disney’s court.

The creative team behind beloved ’90s cartoon “X-Men: The Animated Series” has held talks with Disney about a revival, producer Larry Houston confirmed Friday.
“We’ve had talks, but that’s about it,” Houston said Friday during a virtual Wizard World panel, which you can view above. “We’ve made conversation and it’s up to them to make the decision, but we’ve let them know that we’re all available for whatever they want to do in the future.”
Houston first spoke about a possible revival last year in a report in The Hollywood Reporter, which said that the creative team was putting together a pitch to continue where the series left off. The popular Saturday morning cartoon ran for five seasons between 1992 and 1997 on Fox. It is currently available on Disney+.

Some complexly unexpected and awesome news has surfaced saying that the creative team behind the classic ‘90s X-Men animated series is in the process of trying to revive the show!
According to THR, the team is currently working to put together a pitch for the team at Disney. X-Men artist Larry Houston revealed that the goal would be to continue the story from right where the original show ended.
"The one thing we'd like to do more than anything else is to continue where we left off.”
That would be absolutely incredible! This sounds like one of those news reports that is too good to be true, but there’s real movement on this, and there’s a chance that something could happen with it, so it’s hard not to get excited for the possibility!

Similar to how Bryan Singer’s X-Men really kicked off the modern trend for superhero movies that took the characters seriously, X-Men: The Animated Series was one of the first animated shows of the 90s that found an audience in both cartoon-loving children and grown-up X-Men fans.
This was because of many different reasons, but chief amongst them were that the series had an excellent line-up – with evergreen X-Men like Wolverine and Cyclops to fan-favorites like Gambit and Jubilee – and also boasted comic-faithful character designs, based on the work of artist Jim Lee. It also brought to life many of the major storylines from the page and its incredibly catchy theme tune didn’t hurt its popularity, either.
That’s why it was such a shame when X-Men: The Animated Series came to an end in in September 1997, leaving us with the cliffhanger of an injured Charles Xavier leaving Earth...

Houston, an animation trailblazer as the first black storyboard artist on a Saturday-morning cartoon, was known for inserting cameos from other Marvel characters into the popular Fox Kids show. A shot of Spider-Man's arm thwipping a web; Hulk appearing in the Danger Room; Thor looking concerned while Phoenix causes a storm.

New Line Cinema is in negotiations to acquire the rights to classic sitcom Three's Company and has hired screenwriters Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein (He's Just Not That Into You) to author the script for a film adaptation. Robert Cort (Cocktail, Runaway Bride) will produce the project, which will be set in the 1970s, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Three's Company, which aired from 1977 to 1984 on ABC, focused on an unlikely trio of Santa Monica roommates: two single women and a man pretending to be gay in order to circumvent the era's narrower housing norms.

It’s Thursday, so it’s time for another Dream Cast, in which we take a classic movie or TV show -- perferrably something with Xer appeal that we can either trash or have fun with -- and recast a hypothetical (or sometimes not so hypothetical) remake with actors working today. This week: Three’s Company, the 1977-84 ABC sitcom about a straight man who pretends to be gay so he can share a Santa Monica apartment with two straight women. (If you have a suggestion for a classic TV show or movie we could play Dream Cast with, feel free to email me.) I remember being a small, stupid, uncritical child and loving this show. I’m not sure whether I understood, at the time, much of what passed for humor here. Did I know what it meant when people said a man was gay, or why mistaken sexual...
