“It got me. I was extremely emotional. I was definitely crying,” admits award-winning actress Vanessa Hudgens while discussing her “The Masked Singer” win as Goldfish. “It ended meaning so much more to me than a normal win would because it had nothing to do with the celebrity of me or the idea of me. It had everything to do with what I on the inside bring to the table and my talents. It ended up definitely meaning the world.”
The actress says she worked closely with her producer while choosing songs throughout the season. “I didn’t go into this trying to hide who I was,” she reveals. “I was kind of being really cheeky about the musical choices. ‘Vampire’ was by Olivia Rodrigo, who plays Gabriella in the new ‘High School Musical.’ I thought that was hilarious, and just a great song. Spoiler Alert: Details follow for Season 11, Episode 13 of “The Masked Singer,” “Finale: One Mask Takes It All,” which aired May 22 on Fox.
“The Masked Singer” winner Vanessa Hudgens admits she didn’t necessarily play the hiding game: At least among her friends and fans, they figured out it was her under the Goldfish costume rather quickly.

Hudgens beat out Scott Porter, who had performed this season as Gumball, to win the “Masked Singer” trophy. Coincidentally, both Hudgens and Porter previously starred together in 2009’s “Bandslam.”
Despite their history, Hudgens said the production kept her completely in the dark as to who her competitors were. “I was so invested every step of the way,” she said. “I was trying really hard to...

“I didn’t think I was going to get that far,” admits Thelma Houston, the legendary Grammy-winning diva who placed third on “The Masked Singer” as Clock. “There have been some other divas out there that we know well that didn’t get quite that far, so I said, ‘Well, as long as I can do as good as they did that would be great.’ To go this far was just a surprise to me. Morrissey has unveiled a dramatic new song, “Love Is on Its Way Out,” from his upcoming album, I Am Not a Dog on a Chain, out March 20th via BMG.

It was known ahead of time that the Emmy Awards planned to dispense with a traditional orchestra or pit band for the walk-up and bumper music. What wasn’t anticipated was that the music choices were being outsourced to a bar mitzvah DJ in Des Moines. Or, very possibly, it was a local who had found the right cords to hook the world’s last surviving iPod Mini into the board backstage at the Microsoft Theater, without any monitors that would allow him or her do anything so brazen as tailor the song choice to the winner.
Well, there was at least one match, early on, when Alex Borstein won for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and her walk-up music was “Susie Q,” as in the character she plays, Susie Myerson. And that was just about it for the direct hits, as the playlist thereafter went mostly into a randomizer assortment...

If nothing else, CBS’ “Motown 60: A Grammy Celebration” special alerted America to the continued vitality of Smokey Robinson as a contemporary performer. Ten months from turning 80, the singer’s performances were focused and controlled as he weaved his sultry vocals through classics he wrote — the ballads “The Tracks of My Tears” and “Ooh Baby Baby,” chief among them. Producers aim for vocal-chemistry magic when they pair artists form different genres or generations, and the union of Robinson and a cappella stars Pentatonix on “Shop Around” provided one of the show’s highlights. It’s been 20 years since his last recording for Motown. Might it be time for a return?

The most famous nightclub of the 20th century ran for only 33 months, but has gifted us with decades worth of memories. Studio 54, inarguably the pinnacle of 1970s disco decadence was a home for reckless hedonistic abandon and affected sexual liberation all under the appropriately throbbing beat of Donna Summer, Sylvester and Thelma Houston. A celebrity haunt and a genuine phenomenon with girls in fur coats and boys in short shorts and Cadillacs circling the block, it was the place to be even if you couldn't get in.
Studio 54 has played a good sized role in movies, too, so it’s surprising that it’s taken this long to get a comprehensive documentary about it. There have been movies like 54 (recommended in Director’s Cut format and nothing else) and others like Summer of Sam set against Studio’s influential disco beat. And, of course, any documentary about the 1970s,...

Let's jump back in time to a little over 16 years ago. It's the summer of 1998 and if you hit a gay bar or club in the continental United States, you could not miss Stars on 54's dance remake of Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind." It was simply everywhere. The track was the promotional single for "54," a movie that promised a sexy look at the infamous New York City nightclub Studio 54 but couldn't ultimately live up to the marketing hype surrounding its release. The Miramax production was generating a ton of publicity because of its subject matter (one of the most legendary clubs of all-time), young up-and-coming stars such as Ryan Phillippe and Salma Hayek, the participation of Neve Campbell, who was coming off four straight hits (the first two "Screams," "The Craft" and "Wild Things"). Most buzzworthy of all, it was the first dramatic role for...

So it turns out that disco was actually a revolutionary tool that ended the oppression of women and black and gay people in the Us. Who knew?
I like disco as much as the next person, which is to say I like it at night, in moderate helpings, and only when accompanied by spirits. Disco has long been the musical genre to caricature rather than savour, best enjoyed in the background on hazy nights out rather than as a legitimate musical experience. So presented with the opportunity to sit through a two-hour disco documentary at the London film festival, I was a bit circumspect.
But from the first bar of that sour-sweet high-octane disco beat, I was hooked. This is because The Secret Disco Revolution is no ordinary history lesson about the 70s craze. Rather than simply charting the rise and fall of disco to a thumping soundtrack, the film...

Adam Levine and Blake Shelton may have been the co-winners of the battle to deliver the best one-liner on this week’s episode of The Voice, but in a surprise turn of events, they lost the war of taking home Most Valuable Judge trophy to Christina Aguilera.
Oh, sure, Blake’s “I almost threw my panties on the stage” was a priceless response to James Massone’s lady-baiting rendition of “Don’t Know Why.” And Adam hit the bullseye poking fun at Blake’s consternation over a group of shirtless male backup dancers: ”I think that Blake just bought a one-way ticket to Boner Town.

The second week of live performances on "The Voice" (Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Et on NBC) wasn't exactly riveting, but, as Carson Daly states at the start of the episode, we can count on Cee Lo "arguably one of the best performers in the world" to jazz things up.
And he does, putting stilts, light-up masks and shirtless Egyptians in his team's performances. Also, Purrfect reemerged, happily disproving our theory that she was used to make Cee Lo's wig last week.
Too dark for you? Just wait for Christina Aguilera to tear into Tony Lucca and for Tony Vincent's performance.

A pre-recap disclaimer: I loved "The First Time." I thought it was stunningly shot, as well as brilliantly written and acted. I thought the editing was genius, and its message was affirming of all the big, messy, crazy, gorgeous, sexy, confusing beautifulness of being young and on the brink of your future.
If you hated it, if you were coming here hoping for a lot of snark, this is not the recap you are looking for. I will try to be more cynical next week. I promise.
Also: If first love really could be like this, I'd happily climb into that time machine Blaine's building and go back and be young again.

One of my favorite Saturday Night Live sketches of all time is the Sabra Price Is Right, an Israeli version of the Price Is Right written by Robert Smigel and starring a surprisingly convincing Tom Hanks as the pushy Israeli host. In between segments of them pushing broken electronic goods on unsuspecting contestants, Hanks and company (Sandler and Schneider) would hit on the ladies in contestants row, with a “Why you no go to disco with him?” and a “Disco, disco, go, go, to disco.” This same joke was used years later in the Israeli celebration film You Don’t Mess With The Zohan. I used to think “How strange, none of the Israelis I know ever seem to mention disco…” almost disappointed, because let’s face it, I f*cking love disco. You show me a Thelma Houston’s “Don’t Leave Me This Way,” and I’ll show...

This seems like a cowardly time to bring up my disdain for Justin Timberlake’s Saturday Night Live appearances because last night’s episode, the 36th season finale, was an obvious bomb — but oh well! The Emmy-winning ‘D*ck in a Box’ man plays the same hammy caricatures and embarrassing lovermen with every SNL hosting gig, and the result always feels more like an attempt at “cool” than “funny” to me. Even sketch cameos by musical guest Lady Gaga couldn’t save his tired act, and neither superstar could save the tired writing. Let’s pick two standout sketches, one dud,...

“You can’t be lifting up drag queens!” Those seven words from horrified onlooker Manila Luzon pretty much summed up the “Lipsych for Your Life” shenanigans that went down between Mimi Imfurst and India Ferrah on this week’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Indeed, Mimi’s shocking decision to forcibly hoist a stunned India over her shoulders — midway through performing Thelma Houston’s “Don’t Leave Me This Way,” no less — provided a violent but entertaining shock paddle to an otherwise flat episode.
