New Original Programming:
“Meet the Donors” (8/1)
“Dios, Inc.” - Season 1 Finale (8/5)
“Hitchcock/Truffaut” (8/8)
“Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the La Rams” (8/10)
“El Negocio” - Season 3 Premiere (8/12)
IndieWire Pick: “The Night Of” (Series Finale) (8/28)
HBO’s well-received limited series “The Night Of” will wrap up its eight-part whodunnit in late August. Steve Zaillian’s gritty drama, which examines a man’s fate after he wakes up charged with the murder of a relative stranger, debuted to rave reviews from critics and audiences. IndieWire’s Ben Travers writes, “By actively engaging on personal and political levels, Zaillian sucks the viewer into a nightmare scenario wholly dependent on two verdicts: first, whether or not Naz is found guilty, but also if he really did it.” Here’s hoping the series can maintain its slow burn thrills all the way to the end.

I’m not sure if it’s because I had the opportunity to see and watch more this year, but to me, 2015 seems like it was such an exceptional year for genre films across the board. Once again, indie horror gave us a bevy of incredible films from a variety of subgenres, and even studio films seemed to step things up this year as well (a trend I do hope continues). Here’s a look at some of my favorite genre offerings from this year:
Turbo Kid: One of two movies in 2015 that left me with a huge, goofy-ass grin on my face from start to finish was Turbo Kid, the wickedly fun post-apocalyptic story of a young hero, an evil warlord, a quirky sidekick and her gnome stick. From its synth score to its unforgettable characters to its over-the-top gore to its ginormous, genre-loving heart, Turbo Kid is...

The film has Mad Max: Fury Road‘s Tom Hardy attached to star and Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk producing with John Julian, Dave Bartis and Liman. They are taking their time getting this one right as Eric Warren Singer wrote the first draft and Sheldon Turner has been among the scribes working on this. Hughes…...

Given the subarctic winter we've been experiencing in the Northeast this year, South by Southwest (SXSW), which takes place annually in balmy Austin, Texas, was something we were looking forward to even more than usual. Warm weather, spicy Mexican food, and the hottest movies imaginable all added to create a thoroughly thawing experience.
There wasn't a single Omg-you-have-to-see-this movie like there was last year, when "Short Term 12" made its debut, but the festival's lineup was quietly powerful, full of movies that were easy to miss, but at your own peril. There were a handful of loud, shout-y debuts, but some of those missed the mark completely, leaving room for the smaller movies to reach in and steal my heart.
So, a rundown of all of the movies we saw at SXSW -- some were odious, some were wonderful, but all of them we were very happy to watch... and...

As Quincy's daughter, Rashida Jones might have been just another Hollywood brat. But the Parks And Recreation star has a Harvard degree – and big plans for America's funniest women
The actor, writer and producer Rashida Jones suggested we meet at a private members' club near her home in West Hollywood, which seemed like a fine idea at the time. But, as I wait for her, I worry that there must be a dress code that I didn't know about, because every single woman but me is wearing skinny designer jeans, metallic heels, a sexy top, a full face of makeup and an enormous designer handbag, at 3pm on a sunny Saturday. After a few long minutes in which I shift self-consciously around in my floral cotton dress, Jones comes clattering towards me, barefaced and dressed, in her words, "like a mime": in flats, wide-legged cropped black trousers and a Breton top.

Zombies are seemingly everywhere. In addition to anchoring one of the country’s most popular television series in “The Walking Dead,” in just the last 14 months they’ve done big-screen battle with British East-Enders in “Cockneys vs. Zombies,” served as the backdrop for a funky tale of blossoming young love in “Warm Bodies,” been given the John Hughes treatment in “Detention of the Dead,” worked their way into a hijacked indie film production in “Zombie Hamlet,” and chased Brad Pitt to the highest theatrical receipts of his career in the form of “World War Z.” It’s only fitting, then, that they also inspire a tale of obsessive twentysomething romance taken too [ Read More ]

In addition to owning one of the most popular TV series, zombies have, in just the past calendar year, done big-screen battle with Cockneys (“Cockneys vs. Zombies”), served as the backdrop to a funky tale of adolescent self-doubt and blossoming young love (“Warm Bodies”), been given the John Hughes treatment (“Detention of the Dead”), and chased Brad Pitt to the biggest gross of his career (“World War Z”). So it’s only fitting that they also inspire a tale of obsessive love taken too far. That’s part of the core premise of director Joe Dante’s “Burying the Ex,” in which Evelyn (Ashley Greene) doesn’t let the fact that she’s a newly [ Read More ]

When Brad Pitt, as a producer-star, tackled the sprawling movie adaptation of Max Brooks’ zombie novel “World War Z,” there was a lot of talk about the zombie genre having reached its apex, and possibly being tapped out. On the other end of the budgetary spectrum, though, is something like debut director Alex Craig Mann’s “Detention of the Dead,” which shows that zombie movies are, pardon the pun, unlikely to die off anytime soon. A high school-set horror comedy — think John Hughes meets “Shaun of the Dead” — the film stars Jacob Zachar, Jayson Blair, Christa Allen, Justin Chon and others in a tale of mismatched teens who have [ Read More ]

Title: Detention of the Dead Director: Alex Craig Mann Starring: Jacob Zachar, Jayson Blair, Christa Allen, Alexa Nikolas, Justin Chon, Max Adler “World War Z” is busy presently chewing up the box office, but there’s another zombie tale out there in theaters as well — one likely shot, quite literally, for the catering budget on Brad Pitt’s film. Putting a “Shaun of the Dead”-like spin on one of filmmaker John Hughes’ beloved teen classics, “Detention of the Dead” centers on an oddball (and at-odds) collection of high school students who find themselves trapped in detention while all their classmates and teachers outside have turned into zombies. If its budget and [ Read More ]

It's summer, summer, summertime, time to sit back and unwind, as The Fresh Prince once rhymed. Iron Man, Wolverine, Superman and Hit-Girl are suiting up and the AC is pumping as studios trot out their big guns, eager to put butts in the seats with big stars, bigger explosions and lots of numbers after titles.
That's right, nearly a third of our list is sequels, there's even more that didn't make it, and that doesn't even count the reboots and potential franchise-starters in store as we dive headfirst into our glistening pool of summer movie bliss.

Who failed to get the attention they deserved among the more recognised turns of 2011? Here’s Mark’s pick of last year’s most underrated performances…
As ever, last year saw its fair share of justly praised film performances, but inevitably, a percentage of overlooked moments of acting brilliance, too. Jean Dujardin's silent performance in The Artist, and Meryl Streep's uncanny version of Thatcher are touted for Oscars, but great performances in genre fare, or in films that were released earlier this year are seldom mentioned.
Here, I've tried to pick out turns that either went unnoticed in most reviews, or simply should have gotten more praise. Awards are ultimately arbitrary, but here's hoping this list of ten performances, some of which you might have forgotten, means even half as much as a Golden Globe…

Chicago — Perry Farrell left it to a couple of Lollapalooza veterans to close out day three of his annual party in the park. Of course, after two days of sets by everyone from Tool and Kings of Leon to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Asher Roth, one of those headliners was his own Jane's Addiction, who played the fest with their original lineup for the first time since they helped launch the touring juggernaut way back in 1991. The other topper, the Killers, have also been there before, serving the same honors back in 2005 at the first Chicago-based Lolla, and they brought an even bigger sound and vision this time around in a head-to-head with the reconstituted Jane's.
