Before the days of in-depth single-player campaigns and cinematic storytelling, nearly every videogame shared the same basic premise: survive as long as you can. From Pong to Missile Command, most early gaming experiences weren’t about concluding story-arcs or even defeating a final boss, they simply tasked players with trying their best at a certain task until they met with an inevitable defeat – our natural instinct to persevere and earn high score bragging rights is what made that journey satisfying.
That’s why I find it curious that survival games as a genre only really took off during the mid 2010s after the success of titles like Minecraft and Day Z. While this was likely due to rapidly advancing technology allowing for more complex mechanics that could better simulate real world survival, you’ve got to admit that there’s no better universal motivator than being forced to find shelter...

Vinegar Syndrome is the name of a phenomenon that occurs in motion picture film when reels of film are poorly stored in hot and humid conditions. The hallmarks of this unfortunate and inevitable fate to motion picture film consist of physical degradation of celluloid precipitated by the film development process and indifferent/poor film storage – such as film stored on rusted metal reels – all resulting in film bearing the faint or strong smell of vinegar. The film can become very brittle, suffer from shrinkage and/or take on a contorted shape making it nearly impossible to run through a projector. In short, the only way to arrest the process is to make pristine duplicates of the film’s original camera negative following the developing stage and store them in climate-controlled conditions. As one can well imagine, however, this type of...

"First shown in 1972, John Berger's BBC television series Ways of Seeing radicalized the way an entire generation looked at art," writes Jackie Wullschlager in the Financial Times:
Before Berger, painterly detail, the development of a style, attributions and authentications, were the tools of an art historian's trade, and those practicing it most successfully in the 20th century — Bernard Berenson in the splendor of his Florentine villa, Kenneth Clark, who bought himself Saltwood Castle in Kent and was knighted for his stately TV series Civilisation — had always been unashamedly elitist in both their work and their lives. Then came Berger, born in Hackney, east London, in 1926, educated not at Harvard or Oxford but at London art schools, hanging out not with collectors and dealers but with the revolutionary Black Panther Party, to which he donated half the money from his 1972 Booker Prize-winning experimental novel G., about a rich Italian's journey to class consciousness.

Former Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes has been faced with new sexual abuse allegations. The Australian actor, who was accused of molesting former child actor and Hey Dad! co-star Sarah Monahan in 2010, has now been accused of grooming and embarking on an eight-month relationship with a teenage fan. A woman identified only as 'Michelle' told A Current Affair that Hughes started pursuing her when she was only 15 years old, after she sent him a fan letter saying that she wanted to get into showbiz. Over the next eight months, 'Michelle' said that Hughes sent and hand-delivered over 12 letters to her home. In the letters, he allegedly asked her personal questions, invited her onto the set of Hey Dad!, asked her for a photograph and her phone number and offered to (more)...

She says in a statement, "I am appalled and outraged about claims made on national television regarding my father and my childhood...
"My father is a good man and I have had nothing but a happy, safe and supportive family life. I have no doubt that the allegations against my father are untrue.
"For my father to have his reputation destroyed for the sake of a ratings war is something no reasonable person should find acceptable. One has to question the motives of people reportedly paid to give interviews now, having never spoken before.
"I hope my father takes the appropriate action against the people who have jumped on this apparently lucrative bandwagon for their 15 minutes of fame."
Monahan has threatened to take legal action against Hughes as police still continue to investigate her claims, while the actor has also threatened to sue over the allegations.

Former child star Sarah Monahan is to take legal action against actor Robert Hughes as police continue to investigate her claims that he abused her on the set of Aussie TV show Hey Dad!
Last year Monahan went public with her allegations that Hughes, who played her onscreen father in the hit sitcom, acted inappropriately towards her during filming in the early 1990s.
Cops launched a probe but have yet to file any charges against Hughes - so Monahan has vowed to take legal action herself.
She tells Australia's Nine Network, "We really don't know how much longer it's going to take, and (the police) can't tell how much longer it's going to take or if it's even ever going to result in charges."
Hughes denies Monahan's allegations.

After 54 years on the air and 13,858 episodes, As the World Turns has ended.
The last installment aired this afternoon and was filled with closure. Doctor Bob Hughes (Don Hastings) retired from the hospital , Barbara (Colleen Zenk) dissolved her partnership with Paul (Roger Howarth), Casey (Billy Magnussen) left for law school, Chris (Daniel Cosgrove) proposed to Katie (Terri Colombino), Lucinda (Elizabeth Hubbard) and John (Larry Bryggman) got back together, and Janet (Julie Pinson) asked Jack (Michael Park) to be Lorenzo’s godfather.
It seemed like everyone's storyline was wrapped up in some way, except for Luke (Van Hansis). As fans are well aware, he lost Reid (Eric Sheffer Stevens) last week and yesterday, said goodbye to Noah (Jake Silbermann). The closest he got was to be able to use Reid's stethoscope to listen to Reid's heart, now pumping in Chris' body.

Bob retired from the hospital, Casey took off to law school, and Barbara dissolved her partnership with Paul — but what happened in today’s episode of CBS’ As the World Turns wasn’t nearly as significant as the reason behind all those major life changes for the folks of Oakdale. Today was the 13,858th and final episode of the venerable soap opera, which was canceled last year because of low ratings. Clearly, the writers took great care to keep things happy and optimistic for all the characters: Janet asked Jack to be Lorenzo’s godfather, Carly looked forward to having another baby,...

Painter who turned his back on abstract art to enjoy huge success as a portraitist
The Israeli painter Avigdor Arikha, who has died from cancer aged 81, owed his survival during the Holocaust to his precocious artistic talent. In 1944 his bleak drawings of corpses and deportations, made on scraps of paper in a Nazi concentration camp, attracted the attention of inspectors from the International Red Cross. They arranged for him to join a group of children who were about to be transported to Palestine, but, even with their help, Arikha was able to leave only by taking the identity of a boy who had just died.
Plunged soon afterwards into the armed struggle for the Jewish state, Arikha was severely injured and left for dead in 1948, but within a year he had won a scholarship to study art in Paris. There he became a significant avant-garde figure, before turning from abstract...

Actor Robert Hughes is considering legal action after an Australian news show linked him to sexual abuse allegations made by a former child star on the set of 1980s TV show Hey Dad!.
Police in Australia launched an investigation earlier this month after Sarah Monahan, now 32, came forward with claims an unnamed man molested her during her time on the show, which she joined aged nine.
Another unnamed woman has since claimed she was also abused.
Australian news programme A Current Affair named Hughes - who played Monahan's onscreen father on the show - as the alleged perpetrator on Wednesday.
He immediately voiced his anger at the claim, admitting he's "shocked" and "puzzled" by the allegation, and is currently consulting lawyers over the scandal.
Hughes tells the Nine network, "I am absolutely totally shocked at the allegation and I absolutely deny everything.
