It only takes one surprisingly successful film to spark a new Hollywood trend. For instance, the breakout 2009 hit The Hangover paved the way for the eight R-rated comedies that were released this summer. The unparalleled grosses of Avatar motivated studios to start shooting everything in 3-D — or at least convert their films to the third dimension after the fact. And now, thanks to the unexpected box-office dominance of Disney’s The Lion King 3D, we may have a new craze to anticipate and/or fear: the 3-D rerelease.

News: Alcon Entertainment is preparing to remake Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 action-thriller Point Break. The remake, as written by Kurt Wimmer (Salt), will be “set in the world of international extreme sports, and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring.” No word yet on who will be directing or starring.
In other news, in an effort to prove converting older films to 3D is the new remake, it was announced at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam that Tony Scott’s Top Gun is the latest film getting the 3D treatment. A four-minute 3D clip was presented, but Paramount wanted to get Scott’s approval before moving forward. No official release date has been set, though 2012 is possible.

Alcon Entertainment has officially announced their plans to remake the modern action classic Point Break. Kurt Wimmer (Salt, Law Abiding Citizen) has scripted the update of Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 feature, which according to the press release is "set in the world of international extreme sports." What's peculiar to me is that the word "surfing" doesn't appear anywhere in the press release, so I'm wondering if they're switching to a different extreme sport such as skateboarding or snowboarding. It should be interesting to see what young actor opts to throw himself in front of the firing squad by signing on for the Patrick Swayze role, opening himself up to constant comparisons to an iconic character and star. Seriously, I don't know anyone who hasn't seen (and loved) the original Point Break, which is barely 20 years old.

3D Conversion Of Paramount’s ‘Top Gun’ In The Works Another blockbuster is getting the 3D conversion treatment, it seems. Top Gun, Tony Scott’s iconic 1986 film starring Tom Cruise, is being re-formatted for a possible 2012 release by Paramount. That was the word from Legend3D CEO Rob Hummel, speaking today at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam, where he presented a 4-minute clip in the new format. “I think Top Gun lends itself to 3D due to the aerial flight,” Hummel said. “You can have fun with 3D by bringing things off the screen if they are not attached to the edge of the screen.” Hummel said that the studio wanted to get Scott’s approval before proceeding, while Paramount said there had been no talk of a release date. If the redo of the blockbuster does materialize, it will be on top of 3D conversions of The Lion King,...

3D conversions of box office smashes are becoming norm in Hollywood, and Paramount announced that Top Gun would be just one of the many films that are being converted into the pop out gimmick. Tony Scott’s iconic 1986 Top Gun was the film that launched both the action genre and Tom Cruise’s career into new heights and so far four minutes have been successfully converted into 3D and was screened at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam. The company behind the conversion, Legend3D, is pushing its tech in the hopes that more catalog titles will be converted.
Legend3D CEO Rob Hummel said, “As I understand it, they are planning to release Top Gun in 3D in early 2012, though I known they want to get Tony Scott’s approval before they go forward.” According to The Hollywood Reporter Top Gun has a tentative 2012 release. There has been word that Paramount...

Paramount Pictures is banking on the fact that movie goers still feel the need. The need for speed.
It hopes to release a 3D version of Top Gun in early 2012.
Top Gun Trailer
According to Rob Hummel - the CEO of Legend3D, which would convert this 1986 classic into three dimensions - Paramount is awaiting approval from Tony Scott. But the studio hopes to get it and have the Tom Cruise action flick in theaters by next spring.
"I think Top Gun lends itself to 3D due to the aerial flight," Hummel told The Hollywood Reporter. "You can have fun with 3D by bringing things off the screen if they are not attached to the edge of the screen.
Talk has died down, but this rumor would lend credence to the possibility that a Top Gun sequel really might get made someday. Would you wanna fly with Maverick again?...

It's time once again to feel the need for speed.
Top Gun was first released in 1986, and 27 years later it's heading back to theaters in a new 3-D format. A four minute sequence of converted 3-D footage was screened at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam — footage that included the "Danger Zone" aerial fight. Legend3D, who worked on Conan the Barbarian and Transformers: Dark of the Moon, will handle the transfer.

After mounting a brief theatrical comeback this past May in celebration of its 25th Anniversary, Tony Scott's Top Gun is now aiming to return to theatres in a much bigger way: in three-dimensions. The '80s classic has apparently been added to the growing list of older films slated for a 3D conversion and big screen re-release. A four-minute preview of the 3D conversion featuring the "Danger Zone" sequence was shown Monday at the International Broadcasting Convention (Ibc) in Amsterdam. While Tony Scott has not yet given his stamp of approval, Paramount is reportedly aiming to have it in theatres sometime in early 2012. Top Gun's 3D conversion is being handled by Legend3D, the same company that did the 3D for Alice in Wonderland, The Green Hornet, and more recently Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Legend3D CEO Rob Hummel had this to say: "We think there is great potential for catalog titles in 3D,...

As the event horizon of Hollywood remakes and reboots approaches (that will be the day when they start remaking and rebooting films within the same year of release, a once-laughable situation that now seems oddly possible), the studios are turning to another way to use retread material as the basis for new theatrical releases. The next frontier? Converting old films to 3D! It’s happening for James Cameron’s Titanic (what a fun way to celebrate the anniversary of the big ship’s tragic end, right?), and now it’s happening for Tony Scott’s Top Gun. Because of course it is. It could be no other way. The danger zone will take on an added dimension thanks to Legend3D, who is converting the 1986 “classic” (really?) for a presumed theatrical release sometime in early 2012. Legend3D is doing the conversion as part of a revenue sharing deal they have with Paramount, with...

For the last 25 years, fans have thrilled to the exploits of Tom Cruise in the classic action drama "Top Gun." But what those fans didn't know is that they were missing a vital ingredient that would have made the film even better: 3-D.
Well, thank goodness for modern technology, because now that oversight can at last be corrected, as The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that "Top Gun" is being converted to 3-D with the intention of re-releasing it in theaters.
Hurray?
How you feel about this development may depend on how much you enjoy 3-D conversions, which, if recent box office numbers are any indication, is probably not at all. But the high profile failure of converted films (as opposed to movies actually shot in 3-D) like last year's "Clash of the Titans" and "The Last Airbender" isn't stopping Legend3D from going full speed ahead with their "Top Gun" conversion.

Back in April there were a couple special 25th anniversary screenings of Top Gun so audiences could see Tony Scott's adrenaline fueled film on the big screen all over again (or for the first time). Now audiences will experience the fast-paced dog fights, and aerial battle sequences in a new way as THR reports the 1986 film is being converted to 3D for a theatrical re-release sometime in early 2012. Apparently some footage of the converted film, mainly the impressive jet fighter sequences with Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone rock song, debuted today at the International Broadcasting Convention (Ibc) in Amsterdam. Legend3D is the company behind the conversion and CEO Rob Hummel says, "As I understand it, they are planning to release it in 3D in early 2012, though I known they want to get Tony Scott’s approval before they go forward." Briefly: Paramount is in the first stages of converting Tony Scott's iconic 1986 film Top Gun to 3D. Four minutes have been converted so far -- mostly featuring one of the film's big aerial combat sequences -- and screened today at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam. The company behind the conversion, Legend3D, is pushing its tech in the hopes that more catalog titles will be converted. Legend3D CEO Rob Hummel said, "As I understand it, they are planning to release [Top Gun] in 3D in early 2012, though I known they want to get Tony Scott’s approval before they go forward." Paramount has been slowly playing with ways of milking continued interest in Top Gun, whether that interest is genuine or ironic. The studio held anniversary screenings [1] of the film earlier this year, and there is still the possibility of a sequel that could also be made with the input, possibly even the direction,...

Upon its 1986 release, "Top Gun" was a colossal hit, and a perfect storm of successful 80s movie ingredients, including Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Cold War-era jingoism and Kenny Loggins. But finally, after waiting for a quarter of a century, fans will be able to see "Top Gun" as director Tony Scott no doubt intended: Semi-ironically through dark glasses with after-the-fact 3D grafted onto it.
The Hollywood Reporter has the news that Legend3D will be performing the 3D conversion for Paramount as part of a revenue sharing deal tied to the film's theatrical re-release. Legend3D Rob Hummel claimed, "We think there is great potential for catalog titles in 3D, but studios have had trouble justifying the expense." Have you been waiting to experience the danger zone in the third dimension?
A 3D conversion of the 1986 action movie Top Gun is being worked on right now, for theatrical release early in 2012. The company that's doing the conversion is Legend3D, and they have already previewed a four-minute sequence from the movie to hungry theater owners in Amsterdam at the International Broadcasting Convention.
The sequence shown was one of Top Gun's aerial dogfights, a natural choice. The whole movie will get the 3D treatment, so if your tastes run towards watching fighter pilots jump in the air playing beach volleyball, you'll also be satisfied.
While it's been confirmed that a 3D version of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace is being prepared for theatrical release next year, the Top Gun 3D movie marks what could be potentially a whole new wave of 3D pictures. Since its release in '...

Director Tony Scott's classic 1986 Tom Cruise film Top Gun is set to get a 3D conversion for a theatrical re-released in early 2012. I guess we all knew this would eventually happen, and I'm sure we'll start seeing even more 3D conversions of other older classic film for theatrical re-releases.
A 4-minute preview of the converted 3D film was recently shown at the International Broadcasting Convention. The scene they showed off was the Danger Zone aerial flight sequence. There is no word on how it actually turned out, or what the audiences reaction was.

No, no. They’re not remaking Tony Scott’s mega-hit from 1986 in Top Gun (and shhhh, don’t give them any hints to do one either!), but THR is saying that the classic film is being converted to 3D like James Cameron’s Titanic for 2012.
Footage was shown at International Broadcasting Convention last week.
“As I understand it, they are planning to release it in 3D in early 2012, though I [know] they want to get Tony Scott’s approval before they go forward,” Legend3D CEO Rob Hummel said. “I think Top Gun lends itself to 3D due to the aerial flight.” He added that Legend3D has a revenue sharing deal with Paramount and is funding the conversions themselves.

While Tony Scott makes plans for a true sequel, the filmmaker has also set to work to take the audience's breath away with the newly trending format with a theatrical re-release planned for early 2012. 4 minutes of converted footage have already been presented at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam. It brought the audience into the Danger Zone with the famous flight sequence set to the Kenny Loggins song. The company that is handling the transition from 2D to 3D is Legend3D.
