UK Screen Industries Survey Highlights Socio-Economic Imbalance
A new survey has found that the majority of people working in the UK’s screen industries are from a background that is classified as ‘privileged’. The survey, conducted by the Creative Industries Policy & Evidence Centre and backed by ScreenSkills, analyzed data from the latest edition of the Office for National Statistics’ Labour Force Survey in 2019. Their research found that 53% of those surveyed from the screen industries, including the film, TV and games businesses, were from a privileged background. Looking specifically at the careers of key creative roles, specified here as arts officers, producers and directors, the number rose to 61%. That was in comparison with 38% across all industries. The definition of having a privileged background is those who had at least one parent whose job was a higher or lower managerial, administrative or professional occupation. In contrast, the screen industries employed only 25% from a ‘working class’ background,...

Eric McCormack isn’t exactly sure where he lives. For a few years now, the four-time Emmy nominee (and one-time winner) has lived a double life: Half the year, he’s producing, directing, and acting in Netflix series “Travelers,” playing a badass time traveler who’s trying to save the world. The other half, of course, he’s gay lawyer Will of “Will & Grace,” a character whose appearance on broadcast television was groundbreaking in 1998, and continues on today thanks to the recent NBC revival.
Speaking by phone from his “Will & Grace” dressing room, McCormack credits his parallel lives to “the generosity of Netflix.” The launch of “Travelers,” which is produced in his native Canada, came before the 2016 “Will & Grace” short film that led to the eventual relaunch of the series in 2017.
“That Netflix said yes” to McCormack doing both series, he said, “is a great tribute to them.

Check out this first look of the fourth season of the Sherlock TV series from the BBC. Stateside, the detective drama airs on PBS. With John Watson (Martin Freeman) and Mary Morstan (Amanda Abbington) settling into connubial bliss and preparing for the arrival of their own bundle of joy, it seems elementary our boy Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) would be on the case with a new mate.Don't worry, Watson fans. As the picture above shows, Sherlock's new sidekick is a bloodhound. What remains to be seen is just whom Sherlock and his furry friend are tracking. In May, the BBC announced Toby Jones would star in the second episode of Sherlock, season four. Nick Hurran, who directed the season three episode, "His Last Vow," will helm season four, episode two. The Sherlock cast also includes: Louise Brealey, Mark Gatis, Rupert Graves, and Una Stubbs.

They've been filming for a little while already, and now the network has confirmed that Captain America actor Toby Jones will play a villain in the second episode.

Another day, another time travel series announced. The trend of timey-wimey TV doesn’t seem to be getting erased from existence any time soon. Will & Grace alum Eric McCormack will star in a new sci-fi series called Travelers on Netflix, the streaming service announced on Tuesday. Netflix is making the project in partnership with Canadian broadcaster Showcase. Travelers (not to be confused with the excellent and short-lived 2007 thriller series Traveler, if any of y’all remember that) comes from Stargate SG-1 creator Brad Wright, and among the cast is Stargate alum Patrick Gilmore. Here’s the full premise — Quantum Leap but with more social media and more FBI: Hundreds of years from now, the last surviving humans discover the means of sending consciousness back through time, directly into people in the 21st century. These "travelers" assume the lives of seemingly random people, while secretly working as teams to perform missions...

Humanity’s struggle to understand its place in the universe was one of the central themes of science-fiction author Arthur C. Clarke’s book “Childhood’s End,” which has been adapted into a Syfy miniseries that has its own crisis of confidence. Although Clarke’s 62-year-old novel, about a seemingly benign alien invasion with ominous undertones, is an enormously influential sci-fi work, director Nick Hurran and writer Matthew Graham can’t fully lick the problem of how to make the material resonate at a time when viewers have been inundated with plenty of stories about extraterrestrial encounters. Some of the original tale’s poetic,...

Man Seeking Woman, “Teacup”
Written by Sofia Alvarez
Directed by Tim Kirkby
Aired March 11th, 2015 on Fxx
You won’t find Fxx’s Man Seeking Woman in many year-end discussions, but over the course of its admittedly spotty, watched-by-no-one first season, it staked a claim on some truly unique stylistic real estate in a landscape previously thought to be worked to death: the search for love. Over the last year, there has been a tremendous influx in the number of series trying to combine a “modern” and “edgy” take on modern courtship with ages-old sitcom tropes, but most of these have ranged from lackluster to outright lame. (See almost the entire new network comedy lineup, Fall/Winter 2014-15.) Steven Moffat says "not doing [Sherlock] again would be fine. If that was it, then that would be it"...

It's his comments on Sherlock though, that fans are keen to hear amid a feeling that the series four finale may have been a permanent end to the hit BBC show.
"The ratings were extremely good," said Moffat "so I guess they’ll ask us again, and then we’ll have to see first of all if we have three films we want to make, and then if Benedict and Martin have the time, schedule and inclination.

Fortitude, Season One, “Episode Ten”
Written by Tom Butterworth and Chris Hurford
Directed by Nick Hurran
Airs Thursdays at 10 pm (Et) on Pivot
With the town of Fortitude continuing to descend into chaos, a glimmer of hope was provided by the scientists last week as they seemed to have found a chemical that points to a reason behind the violent behaviour exhibited by Shirley. This week’s episode delves further into the research behind what’s causing the aberrant behaviour, while also exploring what happened to Ronnie and how Frank continues to cope, and how the interaction between Eugene Morton and Henry goes. The result is another compelling episode, despite a couple of weak points, as things continue to build to a head in the town.
Frank Sutter’s downward spiral continues to be fascinating to watch. His torture of Markus over the past two episodes showed the...

Airs Thursdays at 10 pm (Et) on Pivot
With the mystery of Professor Stoddart’s death reaching some conclusion, the town of Fortitude seemed out of the shadows when Shirley proceeded to brutally attack her own mother. The last two episodes have examined the aftermath of both Shirley’s attack coming to light, and Frank’s attempts to come to terms with his son’s apparent criminal activity, among other things. This has resulted in the pressure cooker environment of Fortitude threatening to bubble over as the town finds itself forcefully isolated from the mainland, and has led the show down some intriguing paths.
The paranoia gripping the town in the wake of Shirley’s attack on her mother has been fascinating to watch.

While the task of turning Arthur C. Clarke’s beloved 1953 science fiction novel, Childhood’s End, into a six hour miniseries seems ambitious, the Syfy project is now gathering momentum as it prepares to go before the cameras. Adapted by Matthew Graham (Life On Mars), with the helm to be taken by Nick Hurran (Doctor Who), the television event has now added Daisy Betts (Shutter) and Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck) to a cast that already features Charles Dance (Game Of Thrones), Mike Vogel (Under The Dome), Ashley Zukerman (Terra Nova), Osy Ikhile (The Anomaly) and Yael Stone (Orange Is The New Black).
The unsettling tale chronicles events after a seemingly peaceful alien invasion of earth occurs, resulting in the population eventually residing in harmony under the mysterious, apparently benevolent Overlords. The alien liaison for earth, Karellen, communicates only with Ricky Stormgren – immediately making him the most influential human on the planet.

Doctor Who's Listen, Time Heist & Flatline director Douglas Mackinnon announces he's going behind the camera for a new Sherlock episode...
Following in the talented footsteps of former Doctor Who directors Colm McCarthy (currently knocking it out of the park with Peaky Blinders series 2), Toby Haynes, Nick Hurran, and of course, Euros Lyn, is Douglas Mackinnon, who announced on Twitter this morning that his next job is on the BBC's Sherlock.
Mackinnon, whose first Doctor Who story was 2008's The Sontaran Strategem and who went behind the camera on no fewer than three of Doctor Who's series eight episodes (Listen, Time Heist and Flatline) beat around no bushes with the Twitter announcement, which simply read:
"Next job, directing Sherlock."
Asked by a follower to clarify whether he'd been officially asked, or was merely hoping to get the call, Mackinnon replied, "doing it". That's straight from the horse's mouth then.

At long last, Arthur C. Clarke’s seminal sci-fi opus Childhood’s End is coming to television, courtesy of Syfy, which plans to air an ambitious, six-hour miniseries adaptation. And recently, the network announced that it has landed an actor better known for his fantasty work to take on one of the starring roles – Game of Thrones actor Charles Dance.
The acclaimed actor, whose performance as scheming political player Tywin Lannister on Game of Thrones has earned him rapturous praise over the course of four seasons, will play Karellen, the ambassador for an alien race called the Overlords. When Karellen first arrives on Earth, making contact with Earthling Ricky Stormgren (still uncast), his coming marks the beginning of a peaceful alien invasion that ends all war and begins an age of total peace. As the years pass, human identity and culture begin to disappear, making many realize the cost of such utopia.

Childhood's End, a Us science fiction mini-series based on a classic Arthur C. Clarke novel which begins filming in Melbourne on December 1, will be a great gig for Australian cast and crew and, most probably, VFX houses.

Popplewell and Hayes were approached by NBCUniversal executives in February/March to assess whether the six-hour series could be made in Australia and, if so, to work out a creative and financial structure.
The Docklands Studios and Melbourne locations won out thanks to a number of factors including the Victorian government.s financial assistance, the location rebate, cast and crew availability, locations and a weakening of the local dollar versus the greenback.

Breaking Bad’s amazing final season always meant that it was a likely winner come awards season. However, the debut of the critically acclaimed True Detective earlier this year did leave many wondering whether it might rob the end to Walter White’s story of one final sweep of prizes at last night’s Emmy Awards.
As it turns out, Breaking Bad would end up being rewarded for those amazing final episodes, though True Detective did earn a very well deserved award for director Cary Joji Fukunaga (who helmed all eight instalments).
The UK was represented by Sherlock, and that too did exceptionally well, walking away with Emmys for Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and writer Steven Moffat. Looking at the results, it’s hard to imagine anyone being too upset with the results, though many Game of Thrones fans won’t be happy to see that it was again snubbed.

The 66th Annual Emmy Awards have come and gone; the big winners include greats like Breaking Bad, which won outstanding drama, best actor (Bryan Cranston), best supporting actor (Aaron Paul) and best actress (Anna Gunn). Not too bad for one last victory lap. Matthew McConaughey didn’t pick up a win for True Detective, but he’s had a great year regardless having already picked up an Oscar; he will sleep well.

Admittedly, Childhood’s End is another alien invasion/post apocalyptic kind of tale, of which we currently have a glut in our television schedules. But, if Syfy is going to insist on churning these stories out, it may as well be from the pen of the master – Arthur C. Clarke. In fact, since it was first published in 1954, it could be argued that Syfy has actually landed one of the original, and best.
When mysterious Overlords arrive and peacefully invade Earth, they end all war, eradicate poverty, and help humanity to form a world government – the planet becomes a near-utopia. However, the Overlords remain hidden, distant and mysterious until, years later, their unveiling heralds the dawn of a new age. The story has previously been adapted for a two-hour BBC radio presentation by writer Tony Mulholland, but it has never reached our screens – big or small – making this something quite special for Syfy.
