Stars: Angela Cela, Charles Chudabala, Nicole Cinaglia , Sheri Davis, Marcella Di Pasquale, Jessica Cameron, Felissa Rose, Jennifer Nangle, Sadie Katz, Alan Maxson, Dave Sheridan, Vernon Wells, Noel Jason Scott, Maria Shapley | Written and Directed by Michael Hurst
Directed by Michael J. Hurst, who has vast genre experience – helming films such as House of the Dead 2, Pumpkinhead 4 and 2006’s Darkroom, as well as writing the demented Mansquito (aka Mosquito Man), and both of Scott Adkins’ Ninja movies (personal favourites of mine) – Transmission is a dark, twisted film that feels akin to Peter Hyams’s comedy Stay Tuned, which starred John Ritter and Pam Dawber as a couple trapped in an ever-changing TV or the comedy anthology Amazon Women on the Moon that flicked between 90s TV, poking fun at the tropes of that era.

Tucked in a corner of the Catskills, Casa Susanna was a modest private resort where cross-dressing heterosexual men and transgender women gathered on summer weekends through the 1950s and ‘60s to live as their true selves, dressed in the ladies’ fashion of the day and engaging in bourgeois social activities such as taking snapshots.
Over the past 15 years, a handful of articles, academic research, and photography exhibitions (and let’s not forget the 2014 Tony-nominated play by Harvey Fierstein) have gradually opened the door to this secret subculture of Cold War America.
Now “Casa Susanna,” a new documentary by French filmmaker Sébastien Lifshitz, flings it open.
Following a warmly received world premiere in Venice and screenings this week in Toronto, “Casa” lands this fall at BFI London Film Festival and select U.S. and international festivals. PBS Intl., which has global rights and is receiving strong interest, is planning an awards campaign for this year.

Philip Quast and Hermione Norris in ‘Between Two Worlds’.
After creating five of Australia’s most popular dramas – Always Greener, All Saints, Packed to the Rafters, Winners & Losers and A Place to Call Home – in a stellar 37-year career, Bevan Lee felt he had reached a crossroad.
If he followed one path, he would simply rest on his laurels and be content with his legacy. The other, far more attractive and challenging option: Create a drama unlike anything he’d ever done and which breaks the traditional rules of the genre.
Hence was born Between Two Worlds, a 10-part Seven Studios production which premieres on Seven on Sunday.
The first episode depicts two disparate and seemingly disconnected worlds, typified by one family of extreme wealth and privilege, the other middleclass and suburban.
“I decided I wanted to do a twisty, turny narrative which breaks the rules,” says Lee, who created the show last year,...

Former producer, exhibitor and sales agent Bill Gavin has died in Auckland after a short illness, aged 83.

A former journalist who covered motor racing in Auckland and internationally, his entrée into filmmaking came when he wrote the narration for John Frankenheimer’s sports drama Grand Prix, which starred James Garner, Eva Marie Saint, Yves Montand, Brian Bedford and Jessica Walter, in 1966.

Everyone remembers when New Zealand’s Peter Jackson came barreling onto the scene and in quick order brought us Bad Taste (1987), Meet the Feebles (1989), and Braindead (1992) before eventually settling down into Academy Award-winning fantasy films. (I forget their names. Just Google them.) But he wasn’t the first to introduce the world to his country’s nascent splattery talent: that honor goes to Death Warmed Up (1984), a loopy mash-up of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Hills Have Eye, Mad Max, and Looney Tunes, all spit-shined to grimy perfection in a great new Blu-ray from Severin Films.
Remastered by director David Blyth (Red Blooded American Girl) from the only existing materials, this new disc of Death Warmed Up has a ton of gooey goodies that we’ll get to, but first let’s tackle the story:

Megan Hajjar in ‘M4M’
Since graduating from Waapa in 2016 Megan Hajjar has built an impressive resume with roles in Breath, Love Child, The Secret Daughter, Harrow and the upcoming movies M4M and The Naked Wanderer.
You may not recognise the name because, until recently, she was known as Megan Smart. The actor has decided to use Hajjar, her mother’s maiden name, to more closely identify with her Lebanese heritage.
“I wasn’t being considered for some Middle Eastern roles because the producers did not recognise my heritage,” she tells If.
While she does play a Lebanese woman in Paul Ireland’s M4M, she mostly portrays characters whose nationality is incidental. For example, she had fun playing a serial killer named Charlotte in the ABC/Hoodlum Entertainment’s Harrow and troublemaker Anna Hennessy in Screentime/Seven’s The Secret Daughter.

Philip Quast plays Phillip with A Place to Call Home’s Sara Wiseman as the widow Sophia Grey. The cast includes Wentworth’s Aaron Jeffery as a football coach, Megan Hajjar as Sophia’s daughter Bella, Alex Cubis as her brother Danny, Tom Dalzell as the Walford’s son Bart and Melanie Jarnson as Bart’s girlfriend.

Ash (Bruce Campbell), Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) and Pablo (Ray Santiago) end up at the Western Moose diner — because more than one location per episode be damned on this show! — and have to contend with more Deadite nastiness. The difference here is that the trio is much more adept at dealing with evil by now, and proceed to slice and dice any foes in their path.
At that start of “The Killer of Killers”, the ever mysterious Ruby (Lucy Lawless, still doing so much with so little) and Amanda (Jill Marie Jones) show...

Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Season 1: Episode 5 – “Shadow Games”
Written by Miranda Kwok
Directed by Michael Hurst
Originally aired February 19th, 2010
Just two episodes ago, Spartacus took the time to establish what makes a legend of the arena. And while the series is not defined by any one ideal, the role of glory has certainly played a huge role thus far. When Spartacus sits with Crixus shortly before their battle with Theokoles, The Shadow of Death, Crixus is right to point out that Theokoles would bother to return to the arena for another shot at glory. Money doesn’t matter to a real gladiator; being the best and being recognized for that are the greatest rewards one can be given. It’s what Crixus strives for, as well. Knowing Spartacus’ back-story, we might think that fighting for some higher purpose, whether that be love or another thing, could be more noble.

Two new Hollywood adaptations of the Greek hero Hercules will be battling for box office supremacy in 2014 - Hercules: The Thracian Wars and Hercules: The Legend Begins.

Would we have had Mutant Enemy or Bad Robot without Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Robert Tapert's Renaissance Pictures? David thinks not...
After 1992's Army Of Darkness, another Sam Raimi feature film wouldn't emerge in theatres for another three years. What Raimi did with the time in between is anybody's guess - perhaps he wandered the world; maybe he dug through a peculiar collection of Spider-Man comics with most of the dialogue cut out. But what he certainly did with his Renaissance Pictures partners was bring to light a new frontier of genre TV (cue heroic music and a narrator saying, "This is the story of a time long ago – a time of myth and legend. When the ancient gods were petty and cruel, and they plagued mankind with suffering, only one man dared to challenge their power...")

Spartacus Vengeance: Episode 6 – Chosen Path
Stars: Liam McIntyre, Peter Mensah, Manu Bennett, Viva Bianca, Craig Parker, Katrina Law, Tom Hobbs, Hanna Mangan-Lawrence, Lucy Lawless, Dan Feuerriegel, Nick Tarabay, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Dustin Clare | Written by Misha Green | Directed by Michael Hurst
There was no way that the creators of Spartacus could top last week’s action-fest, but rest assured it does contain gladiator action and tightens up the plot both in Capua and at the foot of Mount Vesuvius.
Spartacus, Crixus, Oenomaus and Gannicus (the four named generals of the slave army) are finally together, like the Justice League of Gladiators, but they aren’t getting along too well. Ever wonder who would win in a fight between our two favourite dual-sword wielding gladiators? Crixus and Naevia are at last together and free, but things between them are very far from being a bed of roses. Last week I would have...

Spartacus: Vengeance – Episode 1: Fugitivus
Stars: Liam McIntyre, Peter Mensah, Manu Bennett, Viva Bianca, Craig Parker, Katrina Law, Tom Hobbs, Hanna Mangan-Lawrence, Luke Pegler, and more that I don’t want to mention just yet ;-) | Written by Steven S. DeKnight | Directed by Michael Hurst
“The House of Batiatus has fallen, for weeks Spartacus and the escaped gladiators have terrorized Capua. Seppius, a young noble, has dispatched his mercenaries to hunt them down…”
The second season of Spartacus (or Spartacus: Vengeance) starts with those words and a lone fighter being pursued by a group of horse-mounted Roman mercenaries, just as the horses are about to reach him, the fighter turns to face his pursuers and we get out first look at Liam McIntyre as the legendary, tempestuous hero Spartacus.

Spartacus Vengeance Season 2 Episode 1 Fugitivus Review. Spartacus: Vengeance: Season 2, Episode 1: Fugitivus on the surface is everything the first season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand was and then some. Underneath the surface, the show has rebooted in a way. Audiences have to get to know the new lead for the show all over again. What made Spartacus: Blood and Sand great is that the lead was realistic, sad, and sympathetic. How Liam McIntyre will portray Spartacus remains to be seen in later episodes but in Fugitivus he has started out on the dramatic and emotional right foot.
The same emotions that would have been in Andy Whitfield‘s eyes during this season are in Liam McIntyre’s eyes, especially when Claudius Glaber (Craig Parker) and Lucretia re-emerge in Capua. Lucretia (Lucy Lawless)’s life continuing after the stabbing in Spartacus: Blood and Sand: Kill Them All was ruined...

I'll start things of with a personal admission of guilt: when it comes to anything set far, far back in time, especially those that involve swords and shields and horses and bloody chaotic battles, I'm usually a fan. Movies like Gladiator and Braveheart or TV shows like HBO's Rome have all left me gleefully satisfied upon watching, and I'm always hungry for more of the same.
Because of this, you could say I might be a little biased towards a show like Starz's Spartacus: Blood and Sand, and you could be right. The moment I saw that this new show was coming,...

Some 11 years after the syndicated Hercules TV show ended, actor Kevin Sorbo is accusing his former bosses of hiding profits.
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys revolves around the mythical brave and handsome son (Sorbo) of the classic Greek gods as he makes his way through a fantasy version of Ancient Greece. Others in the series include Michael Hurst, Kevin Smith, and Robert Trebo. The series ran for six seasons and spun-off another popular syndicated TV show, Xena: The Warrior Princess.
Sorbo is accusing execs behind the show of "creative accounting" in order to hide money made from the series to avoid paying the actors their share of profits.
The actor recently told BlogTalkRadio, "They are certainly, truly a mafia. They hide the money. They bury the money. They won't share profits. They won't pay actors what they're due on the back...

Film: ‘Bitch Slap’; Director: Rick Jacobson; Cast: Julia Voth, Erin Cummings, America Olivo, Michael Hurst, Ron Melendez; Rating: *1/2
It was a word that was censored from the Indian screens less than a decade back. But the sign of the times is that not only is the word ‘bitch’ not ‘beeped’, but a lot of other scenes that would have been simply unacceptable make it to the screen in this film.
Sadly, neither the plot, nor the glamorous three women or the curse words used have the stamp of originality written on it.
Three vixen women, in the middle of a ‘hot’.

Erin Cummings (Hel), America Olivo (Camero) and Julia Voth (Trixie)
Bitch Slap is bad. And, pretty much, that’s the point. The only question is if it’s bad-bad, good-bad or a very, very bad girl?
Billed as an homage to the B-movie exploitation flicks of yore, it’s less of a movie and more of an excuse for sexy, ridiculous and violent things to happen on screen – preferably all at once. Depending on how wedded you are to cohesive narratives, you will find this totally unacceptable or completely awesome.
The premise is a simple one: three foxy ladies head to the desert in search of a kingpin’s hidden stash of $200 million in diamonds. We are introduced to calculating ringleader Hel (Erin Cummings), unstable muscle Camero (America Olivo) and helpless stripper Trixie (Julia Voth) via their décolletage. No, really.

Below you can checkout the sassy new dvd art for Bitch Slap. Directed by Corman protégé Rick Jacobson, starring a trio of titillating temptresses in the form of Julia Voth (Love Hurts), Erin Cummings (Dollhouse; Dante’s Cove) and America Olivo (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen; Friday the 13th; Iron Man), and co-starring ‘Xena/Hercules’ alumni Michael Hurst, Kevin Sorbo, Lucy Lawless and Renee O’Connor, along with Quentin Tarantino’s stunt woman of choice Zoe Bell (Inglourious Basterds; Death Proof; Kill Bill), this is pure, sexy, mindless cinematic joy from sensational start to explosive finish.
The plot follows three badass chicks – stripper Trixie (Voth), corporate powerbroker Hel (Cummings)and psychotic drug-runner Camero (Olivo) – as they crash at a remote desert hideaway with a plan to steal $200 million in diamonds from a ruthless underworld kingpin. But as allegiances change and bitter truths are revealed, the girls’ plan spirals dangerously out of control,...

From the 1950s through the 1970s many a producer could make a nice career out of producing low budget exploitation films. Roger Corman turned his studio into a training ground and provided us with a generation of terrific filmmakers. Many who make films today were heavily influenced by these films and Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez paid homage with their Grindhouse extravaganza.
Exploitation movies are critic-proof. They will find their audiences thanks to the copious amounts of blood, senseless violence, and frequent displays of cleavage. But, for the most part, their time has come and gone as roadhouse promotions and drive-in theatres have gone the way of the nickelodeon. As a result, you have to admire anyone who sets out to make one these days.
