The annual Peabody Awards have unveiled its 2024 nominations.
This year, the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors selected nominees from over 1,100 entries from television, podcasts/radio, and the web in the entertainment, news, documentary, arts, children’s/youth, public service, and multimedia programming categories. Documentary films such as “Judy Blume Forever” and “The Eternal Memory” topped the list of nominees, along with series “The Bear” and “The Last of Us.”

The International Documentary Association came out with its shortlist of the year’s best documentaries today, a list as notable for what was left out as what made it in.
A total of 29 feature films earned a spot on the IDA shortlist, including some considered Oscar frontrunners: Summer of Soul, Ascension, and Flee—each of which earned nominations last week for both the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards and the Gotham Awards. If he hadn’t become one of the great modern dance choreographers of the last fifty years, Bill T. Jones could have been a poet. As his often transcendent work makes abundantly clear, the best dance is poetry in motion, its highest aspiration as an art form to use the body to express what language cannot. Still, as evidenced by a rather remarkable speech used to open “Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters,” a moving new documentary about one of his most enduring works, Jones could dance with his words, too.

Exclusive: Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights to Rosalynde LeBlanc and Tom Hurwitz’s feature documentary Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters, which had its world premiere at Doc NYC in 2020.
The film brings to life the creative process that culminated in choreographer, dancer, director Bill T. Jones’ tour de force ballet D-Man in the Waters, one of the most important works of art to come out of the AIDS crisis.
The deal was negotiated by Kino Lorber SVP Wendy Lidell and the filmmakers. A theatrical release is lined up for July 2021, followed by a VOD release on Kino Now and home video.
Lidell said: “Not just a dance documentary, Rosalynde and Tom have delved deep into Bill T. Jones’s creative process, giving us a true sense of how the cauldron of art can make us think and feel.”

Doc NYC, America’s largest documentary festival and staple of the New York film community, announced the lineup for its 11th edition, running online November 11-19 and available to viewers across the US. A lengthy talk-fest interview of the underrated filmmaker, who takes us through his life story as a personal journey, not a string of movie assignments. Sidney Lumet seems to attract a lot of criticism, and so did this docu for not challenging his opinions or rubbing his nose in his less admirable movie efforts. The docu is just Lumet’s thoughts, and the words of a man of integrity are always inspiring.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 135 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2010 to the Academy’s roster of voting members.
“The work of these individuals has been appreciated by moviegoers all around the world,” said Academy President Tom Sherak. “The Academy is proud to invite each and every one of them.”
The Academy’s membership policies would have allowed a maximum of 180 new members in 2010, but as in other recent years, the several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership in the organization has now held...

Oscar winner Indian sound recordist Resul Pookutty has been invited to join the coveted Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences as a member. Along with Resul the invitation has been extended to 135 film professionals from around the globe that includes Christopher Walts (Inglorious Basterds) and Jacque Audiard (A Prophet). Resul was awarded an Oscar last year for Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire.
