After WWII, he was hired to play piano at an American military base, performing everything from Broadway songs to Strauss waltzes. Here he was exposed to jazz music for the first time.
His father was a cellist and his mother was a pianist.
He attended the University of Minnesota. During the summers, he took classes at Tanglewood in western Massachusetts with composer Aaron Copland.
