The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

“My preoccupation with animals is an open secret,” wrote Betty White in her 2011 book “Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo.” The legendary star, who died this week at age 99, was known for more than just her TV and film work. She was a self proclaimed “zoo nut” who spent her life advocating for animal welfare.
White’s parents were animal lovers and she grew up going to zoos regularly. As her profile as an actor and TV personality grew, it became natural for her to use her platform to spotlight that passion.
In 1971, White created and hosted “The Pet Set,” a syndicated series that featured White interviewing celebrity guests including Mary Tyler Moore, Carol Burnett and Doris Day, and their pets and animal trainer Ralph Helfer. She produced the series herself along with her husband, longtime “Password” host Allen Ludden. “The Pet Set” ran for 39 half-hour episodes, and was...

It started as a continuation of the misadventures of the Griswold family; it ended up becoming one of the most surprisingly popular and oft-quoted holiday movies of all time.
This month marks the 25th anniversary of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, in which beleaguered patriarch Clark Griswold – played by the inimitable Chevy Chase – tries to engineer the picture-perfect seasonal festivities: the best naturally procured tree, the biggest and brightest (literally) Christmas-light display on the block, the end-of-the-year bonus from his Scrooge-like boss. Ten years after “The L Word’s” cancellation, Jennifer Beals is ready to make her return as the ever-so-professional Bette Porter. She’ll not only star in the continued story, but she’ll also executive produce alongside original co-stars Leisha Hailey and Katherine Moennig, and creator Ilene Chaiken.
Beals has been hard at work in front of and behind the camera. In addition to the highly anticipated show’s premiere, Beals has made headlines recently for her work as an executive producer on “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” as well as her book “The Hive.”
Her first mention in Variety was on Oct. 20, 1982, for her star-making role as Alex Owens in “Flashdance.”
Have you seen your first mention in Variety?
Can I be honest? I had never seen it before and it’s because I was at a point in my life where I didn’t even have a career.

Premiere magazine highlighted 10 movie executives to watch in 1990. So what happened to them?
In its May 1990 issue, the sadly-missed Us version of Premiere magazine published an article, highlighting ten young movie executives, and suggesting that these were people with very big futures ahead of them in the industry.
Given that much is written about movie executives, without actually digging much deeper to find out who they actually are, I thought it was worth tracing what happened to these ten, and – 26 years later – whether Premiere was correct in saluting them as the future of the industry. So, er, I did...

Turner’s upfront next week will feature a familiar face. The Closer star Kyra Sedgwick is returning to TNT‘s lineup, this time as a producer. The cable network has picked up to series pilot Proof, a supernatural medical drama executive produced by Sedgwick in her TV series producing debut. Also ordered to series is the 1960s cop drama Public Morals, written, directed by and starring Ed Burns, which counts Steven Spielberg among its executive producers. Both projects, which had been clear frontrunners, have received 10-episode orders for 2015 debut. Of TNT’s other drama pilots, there is discussion about possibly retooling Agent X starring Sharon Stone, while Guilt By Association is not going forward. Written by Rob Bragin, Proof stars Jennifer Beals as a skeptical, hard science, female surgeon who’s struggled with family issues including a tragic death. She is persuaded to investigate cases of reincarnation, out-of-body experiences, hauntings...

More than likely, TNT's Kyra Sedgwick-produced "Proof" is more drama than supernatural in nature, but the medical-themed pilot has landed its lead actress so we'll keep passing on the news until we get confirmation one way or the other.
Per Deadline, Jennifer Beals ("The L Word," The Bride, Flashdance) will head up the cast as Dr. Kathryn Russo, a skeptical, hard-science, brilliant female surgeon with a caustic edge who has been struggling with the devastating loss of her teenage son and a growing estrangement from her surviving daughter.
Dr. Russo is persuaded to investigate cases of reincarnation, out-of-body experiences, hauntings — all of it looking for verifiable proof to answer one of life’s greatest questions: Is death truly the end, or is there something else beyond?
"Proof" is written by Rob Bragin and directed by Alex Graves. Sedgwick exec produces with Jill Littman, Tom Jacobson, Bragin, and Graves.

Even if you aren't a football fan, there's no way you could've pulled a Cameron Frye after last night's and claimed, as the "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" curmudgeon famously did, that you didn't see anything good all day.
That's because two and a half decades after writer/director John Hughes introduced us to the coolest high school kid who ever lived, Matthew Broderick returned during the big game for a "Ferris"-inspired Honda commercial that had the actor once again pointing out that life moves pretty fast, so you should look around every once in a while or you'll miss it.
Life, then, is all about surprises. Who would've thought that, after Hughes died in 2009, we'd ever see some fresh "Ferris" action?...

A 10-second preview of a Super Bowl ad took the internet by storm on Thursday. The clip featured actor Matthew Broderick throwing open the curtains of a window, looking into the camera and asking, "How can I handle work on a day like today?"
That's before the classic "bow-bow-chicka-chicka" from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" plays, ending the preview with just the date of the Super Bowl left to tease us.
It seems clear that Broderick reprises the role of Ferris Bueller, but the preview told us nothing else. The YouTube video listed no company and didn't suggest the product that the ad would ultimately feature.
MTV News reached out to both Broderick and one of the producers of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," Tom Jacobson, for comment, but neither responded to our requests.

Whenever I see the trailer for The Darkest Hour, I picture Ghost Writer’s angry electric little brother. Now a new trailer has gone online and it shows how angry the little bugger will be. The movie takes place in Moscow, where a group of young tourists become trapped by shapeless alien figures that feed off energy. The only way to notice them is when electric devices go haywire. The premise of the film sounds promising, and the cast seem perfect for this particular movie. With Timur Beckmambetov, producer, behind this movie I don’t see how this could not please the sci-fi thriller fans this Christmas.
The Darkest Hour is directed by Chris Gorak and produced by Timur Beckmambetov and Tom Jacobson. The film stars Emile Hirsch, Joel Kinnaman, Max Minghella, Rachael Taylor and more. Check out the latest trailer for The Dark Hour below. You also can watch it in HD on Apple.

Here’s the second trailer for The Darkest Hour which oddly is only one minute long and appear to be more like a TV Spot than it does a full on trailer. The first trailer was 2.5 minutes long and showed us much more but this one still has me keen to go and see the movie that comes out in the Us on Christmas Day and in the UK 13th January as is being distributed by Twentieth Century Fox where as Summit have it in the Us.

Glimpsing the headquarters of the Russian Academy of Sciences is to feel doubly removed from reality. Like something out of Fritz Lang's Metropolis , the architecture belongs not only to another time but seemingly to a whole other world. Two conjoined white towers are topped by enormous golden cuboids that themselves appear as if alien vessels have landed and overtaken the institution. Just down the street, a towering statue is dedicated to the first man in space, Russian cosmonaut Yuri...

A few months ago, I shared with you a sample of my experience hanging out on the set of this winter's The Darkest Hour, a 3D sci-fi/action epic in which humanity will have a close encounter of the most horrific kind when intruders from beyond the stars descend upon the Earth with a murderous intent. (Read part 1 of my set report Here.) The focus was predominantly on a chat with the film's two high-caliber producers, Tom Jacobson and Timur Bekmambetov, and we also shared some very cool concept...

Where could this mesmerizing photo come from?
The answer exists and Joe has it below. But, first, just look at this magical image. Just look at it!
So…from where could this evocatively arty still originate?
Surely it’s a Euro Art Film!
Is it…Last Year at Desert Rock by the Italian auteur Giacomo Arnoldo?
Well… no. But almost.
It’s actually a memorable visual from a 100% Amurkan Hollywood movie– Jack Arnold’s 1953 3-D classic It Came from Outer Space.
I was fortunate enough to get to know Jack during the 70s, as his daughter Susan was the casting director of Piranha, The Howling and Gremlins. She had also acted for her dad (along with Piranha star Belinda Balaski) in the Fred Williamson vehicle Black Eye as well as Al Adamson’s The Female Bunch. Truth be known, I had kind of a crush on Susan during Piranha, but...

Recently pushed from its original August release date to December 23rd, Summit Entertainment's The Darkest Hour is a 3D alien invasion movie that takes place against the backdrop one of the world's most fascinating cities Moscow, Russia. Directed by Chris Gorak (Right at Your Door) and starring Emile Hirsch, Max Minghella, Olivia Thirlby, and Rachael Taylor, the film follows the four central characters as they navigate the ravaged landscape of the city while attempting to evade the deadly, invisible aliens that are intent on hunting down and annihilating the world's remaining humans. Back in September I was flown out to the Russian capital to have a look at the set and interview cast and crew, in the process experiencing a captivating city I wasn't sure I'd ever see in my lifetime. In the first part of our visit, we spoke with producers Tom Jacobson and Timur Bekmambetov...

Timur Bekmambetov is a man of some imposing charm, enhanced, no doubt, by where he chooses to throw his dinner parties. Nearly 700 feet above the bank of Moskva Rivers stands the Radisson Royal Hotel (formerly the Hotel Ukraina), one of the tallest in the world. From the top floor, visitors can catch distant glimpses of the other towering Gothic structures known as the "Seven Sisters," laid out against the circular design of Moscow's cityscape. Late last year, Shock Till You Drop was lucky enough to participate in a set visit for the Bekmambetov-produced The Darkest Hour , a science fiction thriller that proudly plays its Moscow-based production as one of its chief virtues. Near the very top of a 5-star Radisson hotel in Moscow is where my introduction to the 3D alien invasion thriller The Darkest Hour - and Moscow itself - takes place. Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, the Night Watch films) and Tom Jacobson (Mission To Mars, Mighty Joe Young) - the film's primary producers - are pointing out the...

Summit Entertainment has unveiled a fresh trailer of forthcoming PG-13-rated thriller "The Darkest Hour". Set against the background of Russia's capital city, the video presents some action-packed footage as a large amount of evil-spirited aliens begin to invade the city and destroy every living creature in seconds.
While military, police and scientists fail to overcome the spreading invasion, a group of youngsters attempt to find a way to defeat those aliens. However, it seems to be far from possible because those aliens, who have the ability to suck the energy of the earth, are apparently invisible. "They can see us, but we can't see them," so protagonist character Lukie, played by Emile Hirsch, said in fear.
Directed by Chris Gorak and produced by Timur Bekmambetov as well as Tom Jacobson, the alien invasion-themed movie is due to arrive in U.S. theaters on December 23. Joining Hirsch in the cast ensemble are Olivia Thirlby,...
