On a basic level, Paul Thomas Anderson makes films about magnetic presences — figures who emanate such greatness that it’s nearly as impossible for bystanders to be around them as it is to not be around them. Phantom Thread, Anderson’s ninth film, is of a piece with much of his career in that way, telling of a prodigal 1950s dressmaker, Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis), who inspires equally rapturous reactions to his handiwork and his mercurial disposition.
Just as The Master unmasked a serious-man character study as a psychological survey of bullshit artists and Inherent Vice played dress-up as a noir story to spin a tale of immovable sadness, so too does Phantom Thread present itself as a rigorous biopic-like narrative while its interests are far less fussy or predicable. This is less an examination of a singular person than a look at the torturous and sublime experience of his...

Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread” is slowly rolling out to press and guild members ahead of its Christmas release. Following the drama’s first screening in Los Angeles on November 24, “Phantom Thread” arrived in New York City on Sunday, November 26, complete with a rare appearance from star Daniel Day-Lewis. The three-time Oscar winner joined Anderson and co-stars Vicky Krieps and Lesley Manville to discuss his new movie, which his representative says marks his final film performance before retirement.

To the surprise of no one, Day-Lewis revealed he extensively researched numerous fashion designers to get into the character of Reynolds Woodcock, a renowned dressmaker who designs gowns for high society women. Original rumors suggested Woodcock was based on designer Charles James, though the actor refuted the notion. “As fascinating as his life was,...

Daniel Day-Lewis is known to go to extreme lengths when preparing for his roles, staying in character on set and getting inside their mindsets. That seems to be the case for his alleged final performance, in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread,” in which the soon-to-retire actor plays fictionalized couturier Reynolds Woodcock. According to longtime costume designer Mark Bridges, the mid-fifties period piece found Lewis learning how to drape in preparation for his performance — just not exactly the way he should have.

It’s great when a fancy costume picture really has something to say — Alan Bennett’s crazy tale of a king’s episode of mental illness becomes a highly entertaining comedy of errors, but with serious personal and political ramifications. Nigel Hawthorne is exceptionally good as the sovereign whose brain has de-railed; Helen Mirren, Ian Holm, Rupert Everett and Amanda Donohoe variously try to help him — or steal his crown.

The Oscar race isn’t over until the last movie screens, and this year one of the final contenders to be unveiled will be “Phantom Thread.” The drama marks the hugely anticipated reunion between Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis, who last worked together a decade ago on “There Will Be Blood.” The Upton Sinclair-inspired drama earned eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, and gave Day-Lewis his second trophy for Best Actor (he’d make history and win a third for “Lincoln” five years later), so anyone would be foolish to underestimate just how big “Phantom Thread” will be this awards season.
Focus Features has been keeping a majority of the details surrounding the movie under lock and key, although the official trailer was finally released on October 23, teasing a gorgeously shot drama about the romantic obsessions of a self-destructive artist. “Phantom Thread” seems to operating...

2017 may have saved the best for last when it comes to the movies. Not only is Paul Thomas Anderson returning to theaters with his first feature since 2014’s “Inherent Vice,” but he’s also reuniting with his “There Will Be Blood” Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis. To make matters even more essential: “Phantom Thread” is rumored to be the final performance of Day-Lewis’ career, who is set to retire from acting.

Earlier this year Daniel Day-Lewis announced that he is retiring from acting. He made one final film with director Paul Thomas Anderson, who previously directed Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood. There hasn't been a lot of information on this new film collaboration but today we have learned that the title of the film is Phantom Thread and we also have a brief plot synopsis:
Continuing their creative collaboration following 2007’s There Will Be Blood, three-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis stars in Phantom Thread from Paul Thomas Anderson. The writer/director will once again explore a distinctive milieu of the 20th century. The new movie is a drama set in the couture world of 1950s London. The story illuminates the life behind the curtain of an uncompromising dressmaker commissioned by royalty and high society.

An Oscar movie could hit theaters at any time during the year -- as far as the rules are concerned, it only needs to be released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 to be eligible -- but everyone knows that all of the true contenders arrive in the last quarter of the year.
I suppose some Academy-worthy movies have already been released: Dunkirk, right? The Big Sick and Get Out less likely, but perhaps! I guess some people believe Wonder Woman could really get a Best Picture nomination.... So, instead of considering this our first round of Oscar predictions, think of it as a Ones to Watch list to prepare you as studios start showing off their films that could earn noms at next year's Academy Awards. (Which are still five months away, Fyi, on March 4, 2018.)

If you can count on one person to take the Met Gala dress code seriously, it’s Sarah Jessica Parker. Every year she wears something that perfectly honors the exhibit (usually accented with a towering headpiece) because, as she puts, she’s a “stickler for the theme.” So with something as avant-garde as “Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between,” we had no doubt she’d respect the theme in her own creative way.
But we waited and waited and waited for all the celeb red carpet arrivals only to discover Sjp was nowhere to be found!

Blake Lively is a Met Gala vet. Every designer loves to dress her, and every fan can’t look away. For close to a decade, Lively has brought her style A-Game on the Met carpet in one head-turning look after another. This year marks her eighth time at fashion prom, and of course, she and husband Ryan Reynolds are once again in the running for king and queen.
The 29-year-old actress and mom of two selected a plunging gold gown heavily embellished with fringe-style beading and blue feathers that cascaded down the train. She teamed the dress with statement Lorraine Schwartz earrings.

When it comes to the Met Gala, Rihanna does not mess around. Year after year, the pop star shows up and consistently kills it on the red carpet, following the exhibit’s theme to a T in a brand new custom couture confection that packs a major punch. So, of course, this year’s Comme des Garçons-themed gala was no exception, with the bad gal showing up in a floral Comme des Garçons ensemble truly befitting her red carpet royalty status.

The Met Gala is almost here! In honor of fashion's Superbowl, we're taking a look back at the best and most memorable looks from last year's fete. The theme was Charles James: Beyond Fashion and there was no shortage of gorgeous looks! Blake Lively gave us old Hollywood glamour in her Gucci Premiere custom gown. The silk chiffon blush design featured rose-gold paillettes and a long cape which cascaded into a train. She accessorized with voluminous waves and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Not to be outdone was Beyonce, who stunned in her dramatic choice for the night. Queen Bey opted for a sheer Givenchy Couture number which featured black beading and a plunging neckline. She turned heads with a bold burgundy lip and a sexy veil. Of course, most people remember what happened later that evening -- when Knowles' sister Solange got into a fight with Jay Z in an elevator.

Jennifer Lawrence is a bare-faced beauty! The Oscar-winning actress was spotted without makeup after a night out with Lorde in New York City on Sunday night. Sporting a white top, torn jeans, tousled blonde hair and a sun-kissed glow (or fake tan), J.Law looked cute and casual as she spent time with her famous friend ahead of her hosting duties at tonight's Met Gala. Lawrence will co-chair the star-studded event, which A-listers including Jennifer Lopez, Kerry Washington, Blake Lively, Beyonce, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Kendall Jenner and many more are expected to attend. The theme of the ball this year is "Chinese Whispers: Tales of the East in Art, Film and Fashion," which should prove for some interesting fashion. In 2014, the theme was inspired by Charles James' creations, while punk ruled in 2013 -- who do you think will kill it tonight on the red carpet?...

The first full-length trailer for Disney’s new live-action adaptation of Cinderella was this week and featured tantalising glimpses of what promises to be a visually gorgeous film. The costumes, designed by three time Academy Award winner Sandy Powell, appear to be absolutely stunning.
With a clever mix of the eighteenth century, the 1830s, and a little 1950s couture thrown in for good measure (Powell has been quoted as saying she was aiming for the look of “a nineteenth-century period film made in the 1940s or ’50s”), Powell has created another jewel to add to her already over-bling crown. Here is a quick rundown of some of the looks we’ve been teased with…

Sarah Jessica Parker, a close friend and frequent collaborator to designer Oscar de la Renta, penned a moving tribute to the late designer, who died on Monday.
Parker first met de la Renta in 2000, in the midst of her Sex and the City fame, and even wore the famed designer on the fashion-forward show. Throughout the years, Parker frequently wore de la Renta couture to award shows and red carpet events, including the Met Ball.
“I can’t remember how I had the courage to be friends with him – he was so otherworldly in a way,” Parker wrote in a personal essay for The Hollywood Reporter.
In her tribute, Parker recounts fun evenings spent with de la Renta during New York City’s Fashion Night Out, writing, “On every Fashion’s Night Out, I had to be at Mr. de la Renta’s store when he was there – it was...

Given her classic beauty and undeniable charm, Blake Lively is a welcome guest at pretty much any party she wishes to attend.
And on Monday night (May 5) the “Gossip Girl” actress and her husband Ryan Reynolds had a blast at the 2014 Met Gala.
On the morning after the event, Blake told Vogue, “I look forward to the Met Gala all year and Monday night did not disappoint. This one was extra special for me because if I could live in any time period, style- or music-wise, it would be around when Charles James was designing in the forties and fifties.”
Ms. Lively has also been busy working on Gucci’s Chime For Change initiative, an organization that raises funds for girls’ and women’s rights and issues.
She credits Salma Hayek for getting her on board- “Salma is so passionate that she can’t do something unless she’s giving it three-thousand percent.

Well, it looks like after last year's Met Gala punk rock disaster, Anna Wintour finally learned her lesson. In order to prevent the fashion maven's beloved formal event from turning into a bad Halloween ball, Ms. Wintour made this year's gala and exhibit all about glamour and sophistication. Unfortunately, it seemed as though this year's theme—Charles James: Beyond Fashion—didn't seem to resonate with the glitterati. Perhaps they hadn't heard of the legendary couturier and just decided to wear whatever the hell they wanted. The same nonchalance went for the hair and makeup: we expected high chignons and structured beehives, but instead we got a rat's nest from Katie Holmes and...

It's the day after the Met ball, and after having a chance to sleep on it, it's clear which trends reigned supreme at the gala. The dress code was "white tie," honoring legendary designer Charles James, and many celebs had their own interpretation of what that meant. There was even a handful who clearly were nostalgic for last year's punk theme. Basically, people went in all different directions, and that means there were a ton of looks and trends popping up all over the place. On the beauty front, cherry red lips, retro waves and sleek...

With a strict, antipunk dress code that had the fashion community buzzing for weeks, the red carpet at this year's Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala was no laughing matter. Stars in serious ball gowns, many of which looked like they were plucked straight from the Charles James: Beyond Fashion exhibition, strutted up the grand staircase, but only a select few made our best dressed list. First, there was Blake Lively, who wowed in a blush custom Gucci Première silk chiffon gown with cascading scarves and a voluminous train. Emma Stone, while straying a bit from the more traditional "white tie" attire in a crop-top ensemble, positively popped in a Thakoon pink knit jersey top and draped fuchsia skirt. Meanwhile, Naomi Watts rarely strays from our best dressed lists, and tonight was no exception. In Givenchy Haute Couture, it was hard to decide what to be enamored with...

We know Shailene Woodley follows a more earthy, hippie way of life, and, apparently, she likes that to translate to her red carpet looks. The Divergent star wore a tree-inspired Rodarte number to the NYC Met Gala on Monday. She also showed off a new, blonder 'do as she walked the carpet and mingled with her fellow Rodarte wearer Kirsten Dunst. After the bash, Shailene opted to ditch her sky-high heels in favor of walking barefoot on the street of NYC as she headed to various afterparties with her pals. (To be fair to Shailene, she's gone barefoot at events before!) This year's Met Gala will be the first event in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's newly renamed Anna Wintour Costume Center (formerly just the Costume Institute) and will celebrate the work of American-based designer Charles James. Anne Hathaway has changed up her look many times at the Met Gala, and the 2014 red carpet ensemble on Monday night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Anna Wintour Costume Center was no different. After wearing Valentino two years in a row, Anne went red in Calvin Klein. In 2013, the actress memorably debuted a platinum blond 'do, but she didn't make quite as bold of an entrance this year. However, she has come a long way from her long hair and purple Marc Jacobs gown at her first appearance in 2009. This year's Met Gala celebrates American-based designer Charles James. He was best known in the '40s and '50s for glamorous ball gowns that highlighted a woman's curves.
